Ok first of many, the barn is amazing and until I got in there to shoot it, I had no idea how many millions of pics I want to take in there!

not sure how i missed this post, dee. sorry for coming late to the party.

it's a nice set. what lenses were you using? a couple of the shots seem a wee bit distorted (not in a bad way), and i'm curious what you shot with.

you did pretty well capturing the cobwebs...those things are hard to get good focus on. well done! one thing you might want to tuck away for future cobweb shooting is taking a spray bottle with water in it with you. since the webs are so delicate, they can be hard to see. if you mist them, they stand out more, especially if you can get a dark background with the light coming in over your shoulder to illuminate the water beads.

thanks for sharing...looking forward to seeing more of that barn. oh, and the last shot in the album (barn from a low angle) is my favorite. really like the perspective on that one and the way it accentuates the sky.

I heard about the spritzing for spider webs, which I still want to do, or using a shot of glycerin which hangs on to the webs more, but these are cob webs and I thought it may weigh them down too much, but hell it's worth a try..part of me gets the eebie jeebies creeping around for shots and that is what gets my adrenaline going only I keep forgetting what I am doing. I used my 18-135mm lens I THINK and I may have thrown on the Wide angle.

Mostly I just have fun shooting the creepy places. Upstairs in the barn has beautiful light coming in through the slats, gotta get up there soon, it will be too dang cold to do so! Also wanted to do some Fet shots up there, large beams are great for lots of fun stuff.

as you may or may not know, we've got a bunch of wildfires going down here in tx. there was a relatively small fire a couple miles from the house, so we went looking for it. and we found it. of course, we couldn't get to a place where we could see the fire (they keep blocking the damn roads), but i did manage to get some shots of the army helicopter that was doing water drops on the fire.

you can see them here (http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10150302309964586.356117.698804585&saved#!/media/set/?set=a.10150302309964586.356117.698804585&type=1), if you care to have a look.

I'm still trying to figure out a nice camera with changeable lenses and such. Guess I'll have to wait until I come up with a new job. Until then, I am enjoying these two smaller/less complicated ones lol! I've had 2 of the Canon Powershot ones since I like them awful well, but haven't used it much since I got the Nikon a short while back. :)

I'm putting out a call to the many talented photographers on this site. I am in the market looking for someone who's interested in doing a pro-bono photo session with a whole lot of exposure for you in return!

You'll likely want to be in the Southern California area (unless you feel like traveling). Experience with digital editing and human subjects preferred ;)

It would be a great project for your portfolio and would gather you immense exposure. If ya got some samples, send 'em my way and let's chat!

Cheers :)

Getty Images recently contacted me wishing to license 8 of my photographs; who knew just showcasing on flickr would warrant that kind of notice. It was and is a very validating feeling.

Here are the three I've decided to license: James (http://www.flickr.com/photos/cruel2bekind/4498835274/), Sara (http://www.flickr.com/photos/cruel2bekind/5518615697/in/set-72157626247591026) and Atticus (http://www.flickr.com/photos/cruel2bekind/4092749001/in/set-72157622603214443/).

Anyone else thought about selling stock photography?

How's everyone doing?

This weekend I have a photo date with a small kitten. We're babysitting 6 week old Felix (a wanna be tuxedo.)

Love those stage shots Fancy, well done! Cajun, post those moon photos!

So I decided I want to photograph that old one room school house every season and make a nice collage of it, so I went by there yesterday and got the one below. I like it, but need to go back today and get it from the same angle as the original (summer) photo... but here it is on a cool, grey fall day...

When I photograph my animals indoors I usually use off camera lighting.
Here is one I did of my Chihuahua, Pixi.
http://stacyhughes.smugmug.com/photos/i-23fWg2w/0/L/i-23fWg2w-L.jpg
We gave her a bath, let her run around, then snuggled her until she got sleepy, then I had Michael stand behind me with her favorite treat, cheese. LOL Then I just had to snap fast. I love photographing our furkids, but it is definitely a challenge. I'll take furkids over infants & toddlers any day though.

And a good shot it is! The lighting in this old farmhouse is terrible, so I use my hotshoe flash a lot, and never like the results, I will try to find more lighting!

Hello Photogs.....

I am this (-) close to purchasing a Canon Rebel T3i. Does any one have one or have any experience with it's previous model the Rebel T2i?

I have several click and shoot cameras, but they don't always allow for the kind of photographs I want. I want to be able to control my depth of field.

This Canon seems to be an excellent starter D-SLR, I'd appreciate any input.

Thanks!

I thought the Sony might...but NO!....the Sony is pretty old, and still pretty big for a point and shoot, but it takes good pictures. Then I started to get into *pocket sized* they serve a purpose. I'm really missing my 35 mm days. I swear I have a camera for every year I have lived :seeingstars:

The Sony A100 is my DSLR. And I've been very happy with it for a couple reasons, but I will have to look into the DOF more this weekend to answer your question.

Sadly, I dropped the camera getting out of a train seat this summer. The image stabilizer was affected, and I was a given a $350 repair estimate by the local camera shop, which I declined. There is a depth of field preview button, and some have found the 1/4000 max shutter "limiting" for DOF.

That's a HIGH END point and shoot.....can you turn Auto off?

My dinosaur Sony point and shoot, allowed me to activate the red eye sensor with a half click, this sent some internal signal to the camera brain (for lack of technical verbage) and the lighting came out perfectly (with or with out flash) however, it was an ALL auto camera. Is this any help?

Somewhere in the menus you'll find a function that controls the intensity of the onboard flash...possibly cobble together a diffusing filter for the flash too - I've used a cigarette paper before. You also possibly need to play with your white balance in accordance to the type of artificial lighting you're using.

ETA. I'm a Nikon chap all the way. The consumer level Nikon glass is best IMO. In the pro glass market the brands are much of a muchness.

I would love a rangefinder (if only I could afford a Leica). Keeping it old school and simple. Less choice, more creativity. S'why I favour fixed glass. Too much choice and decisions to make with a zoom (although I do own a couple)

We all work differently though.

A good picture is about framing and composition not how many megapixels or 'modes' yer camera has.

mega pixels has NOTHING to do with it. Absolutely the glass is important. Thats the bad rap the Canon Rebels I asked about earlier have (poor glass quality) I'm mostly interested in Depth of field.....you can't modify that with a computer. P&S will still have a purpose.

I wasn't aiming the megapixels comment at you really Yellow band. It was a general sorta whinge about digital cameras because I believe the obsession with megapixels is just a marketing ploy to make folks upgrade.

I love mucking with dof too dee but use fast(ish) fixed glass to get the pics I like. My favourites are an old Sigma 28 2.8 and another old 35 1.4!!! Nikkor.

Yes and although I notice a difference in the quality of photos between my Canon 40D and 60D, I don't contribute any of that to the increase of megapixels... my 10 megapixel camera had just as a sharp image as my 2 megapixel.

Unless you have some keen interest in blowing up your pictures to a massive level, 5 megapixels is plenty. Keep in mind that you are comparing apples and oranges when talking about digital versus film. Digital is based on interpolation and is a very different medium than film. Even top of the line digital prints are not acceptable by National Geographic, who continues to only accept film-based images.

I'm not comparing apples with oranges. I'm not comparing digital to film in any way. I'm talking megapixels and digital only. My Nikon D100 is only 6MP...I've had large prints from it. Ex.Mrs.I is a fine art medium format photographer so I sorta 'get' the difference about how they look when compared :cheesy:

Ummm, torrents?

Isn't that illegal?

girl_dee

A way of downloading software.

Well my fear is that I will become less concerned about taking a good pic, which is an adrenaline rush for me and not interested in spending more time editing photos than I do taking them.

My other issue is that it's so expensive.

So how do you use Torrents?

ButchEire
11-04-2011, 06:52 PM
I used to edit and it drove me nuts. I chose instead to become more adept at taking a good shot, the first time, using natural light.

You would download a program like utorrent and then locate a photoshop torrent file and let it run. TECHNICALLY, torrents are not illegal, although it is a grey area. Unlike direct full file download, torrents are packets of information that are extracted from hundreds of individual sources and put back together into a single program.

Torrents are really only useful if you have a high-speed internet connection and have a lot of time to leave the PC running (a day at the most). Another option is dhgate.

iPhoto is pretty good nowadays Dee, especially for those that like to keep their photo editing actions fairly simple (like me). I like it handles RAW files now. I've heard good reports of Aperture

I have Aperture, I paid a fortune for it and I hate it.

Picasa is a GREAT and free simple program that I use to resize and do color corrections on. I may just want to leave it at that. I love using it to import and organize my pics, I have about 10,000 on my mac and twice that on external hard drives....

I will check iphoto out. I am lazy and should have done that by now.

I'm not a talented photographer sadly so I always use basic 'corrections', the same sort of things that exMrs.I used to show me in the darkroom only I do them digitally.

Very cool pics even though the subject matter isn't to my taste

Like I said I don't own Photoshop but wondered what the draw was.

I started out on Film, everytime I hit the shutter I remember thinkin 27cents, 27 cents, the cost of taking one picture.

I loved the adrenaline rush of waiting, and clicking at that exact right moment. I don't want to lose that. I already take 200 pics of the moon for example, and may keep one.

When we were urbexing regularly I and two of the four of us used to take hundreds of pictures digitally and then edit the number heavily to achieve our best 50 or so. exMrs.I used to take either her old FM2 or the Hasselblad and take maybe 20 really cracking, thought out shots. I wish I could that sort of photographer.

I love the long thought out shots, I love composing and trying to capture what my eye sees in the viewfinder. I love that rush. I don't love just shooting randomly and thinking *I can fix that later in Photoshop*, I've even gotten lazy on leveling my shot.

Tsk! at you Dee...ya can't be that lazy. I aim to do as little as I can. I have actions in photoshop (which is now on my last iMac but one and not on this new one hence my desire for Aperture or similar) for certain levels of sharpness and saturation etc but that's it. Sometimes I've had to correct barrel distortion but only when using the 18-200...another reason I like fixed glass.

I came to love the discipline of self portraiture because I had to think how I might achieve the shot I wanted.

I did try picasa briefly but found I preferred Photoshop at the time. For real basic stuff I used to use Picnik.

I don't know how to make working copies of software discs. The same issue is there about legality of copyrighted material though.

I just stumbled upon this thread. Love love love photo taking. Cajun Dee, I just fell in love with you. I love your thoughts on capturing the perfect shot. I am right there with you. I love your web site. I, too was born and raised in Louisiana. I am from Bossier City. I left LA in 2000 for Hot Springs, Arkansas. I have lived in the mountains ever since. Still love my swamps and cypress trees though.

Linus, thank you for starting this thread. Your photos are awesome. I envy the places you have visited. I love taking photos. Honestly, I can't stand taking pics of people. I am a landscape photographer. I don't mind taking photos of people who are unsuspecting of it. Like homeless people or a child exploring our beautiful world we live in. I am just a freelancer at heart. I also have found that my 12 year old daughter is a pretty good photographer. She has opened up another type of photography to me. She stages shots. Heck, I am enjoying getting up on a Saturday morning and spending the day just walking around our small town and exploring with our cameras and seeing what kind of stuff we can get into. Spending time with her and with our cameras is just priceless.

I opened my photography studio in our small town of 900 plus people this week. I'm excited and scared. Any thoughts about this? All ideas are accepted!!! I am going about this by the seat of my pants!!! I did a "Christmas Kiddo's Photo Contest" and I'm doing a free sitting fee and a DVD with photos on it and a Memory DVD set to the parents favorite song to the photos. The parent can take the DVD to Walmart and print the photos out. It went over well. I got 349 new people on my FB photo page.

Anyway, I use a NIKON D3100 and LOVE IT! I have always used NIKON even when I used a 35mm. I gave my daughter my NIKON CoolPix P500 to use. It's a Point and Shoot. She is amazing with it. I bought Photoshop and a book to learn to use it, but am scared to death of it. I NEED to learn how to use it so bad. I use Picnik to edit photos. I KNOW I need to use a more adult program. I'm fixing to make myself learn to use Photoshop!!!

Okay, I'm shutting up. Photography is my life. I love it!

Thanks everyone! Kel

WOW, Bossier City? Never thought I would hear that name outside of Louisiana.

Well we are much alike, Kel. I don't like shooting people either. One thing I love is candid shots like you say, I used to love taking pics of the kids camping and enjoying ice cream at the resort I worked at, fishing pics, a cute little girl outfishing her dad, stuff like that. I don't think I could do studio work. I like the big ole sky and the great outdoors.

OK where is your FB page! You can do lots of contests on FB pages and stuff, get people excited about it...

What do you plan to shoot in your studio? Or is it for your finished photos?

Lol yes.. especially the blue, greens and browns..Maybe I am on to something!!! Brown skies and blue fields.....

I shoot in Raw then hit the *color correct* auto button in Picasa. That is the extent of my editing.

I will be sending Incubus my Aperture disk, I can't wait to see what comes of it!

Fancy, I am a huge fan of yours too. I NEED to get back to working my Photosite on ArtAmerica, but when you feel like your pics are so run of the mill and compared to all the others, nothing special, you lose interest.

I hear what you're saying about run of the mill feeling, but I've always seen your vision as different, and a cut above. Although, I know from my own experience I go through phases where I feel like everything I've shot has been shot before. Sometimes taking a pause and then coming back to shooting gives me fresh perspective.

That's awesome! How do you like that site for selling?

I was trying out the Smug Mug site to sell for awhile with a couple of the theater projects I worked on. I was surprised at how easy it was to setup and the minimal charges to have a "shop". Although, most of the stuff I shoot I have no interest in selling; it's more about personal fulfillment.

I LOVE Picnik!!! They are constantly updating it, too. I joined it for a year because my daughter loves editing her photos on it and heck i fell in love with it, lol.

Dee, I am Kelli Fotograffer Mims on FB. I think I might already be friends with you on there though. After the Reunion I went nuts and started asking everyone to be friends with me on there, lol.

I sure love your outlook on photography. Oh and I am going to be taking photos of PEOPLE in my studio...UGH. I'm going to try to make a living at it. I am going to bite the bullet and make myself enjoy it and on weekends do what I LOVE TO DO with my camera. I'm going to bid for the local school's photo contract and yearbook contract, too. Gonna see if I can do the proms and all other school events. I am the only photographer in town, so I should have no problems getting weddings and senior pics, etc. My partner is a DJ and has been doing weddings since 1998, so we already have that going for us. We've just added my photography to that business. If I could just learn how to use Photoshop, I'd feel SO much better about all of this. Monday I'm going to hit the books and learn it!!!

It's nice to know a fellow LA person on here, especially a fellow photography lover!!! : ) Kel

Yes I saw your FB page, thank you but I wasn't sure if that was your photography page too! I sold two prints on FineArtAmerica recently so I was over the moon.

Photoshop Lightroom has some really great effects that I've seen lately.

I am sure you will have no problem with your studio, BUT I have a question. Would doing shoots like at parks or out in town work for you? I think the backdrop of trees and such works wonders!

I usually take pics when I'm out for a walk. I'm too shy to do the random street pic. Never do self-portraits.
Obviously - I need to get out of my rut!

would anyone be interested in doing a photo theme week? peter lik does one on his facebook page, or he used to it's been awhile but i always tried to add to it. it was such fun and you got to see some really incredible photos of a similar genre or item. i don't know how we could do it - i guess open a new thread maybe and a week ahead of time vote on a theme topic from perhaps three different ideas? then the next week on that thread submit our photos for the chosen theme? does that sound right? would anyone want to participate in something like this?

Okay then! Let's do this ... it'll be fun. I'll create a thread now but I can't create polls I don't think being a free member so ummmmmm, I'll figure something out.

This is one thing I would like to venture into, how do you do this??

Does anyone have advice on selling stock photos...

ButchEire
11-13-2011, 03:39 PM
I have accounts with several stock photo sites. Advice? Well, from my experience, you can't really sell an artistically-inclined photo as well as you can a generic one. People looking for stock are looking for appealing, but generic. You also can't really do editing on potential stock, because each time you save the edit, the picture loses quality and when it's reviewed, they can pick that out a mile away.

Good stuff, is it hard to sell? I am so afraid of just having my stuff taken and not getting any compensation..

If it's generic, it will sell and i've never had someone steal my stuff. These sites that sell stock have measures in place to protect the photos (eg: watermarks). They don't want to lose $$ either, so they do everything they can to protect them. It's a completely different mindset though, stock photography tends to be the photos everyone would take if they could, rather than a shot that is uniquely yours. It does provide a bit of residual income but I haven't uploaded in a couple of years and I only get $$ for the ones that have been available during that time.

lately, i've been hitting a club or two every other weekend, doing live music performance shots. it's challenging and interesting...and the music is good.

if anyone has an interest, you can see some of it here (http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.371738979510248.107844.216358705048277&type=3).

it's taking some getting used to, the clubs not minding at all that i show up with camera gear. the folks at antone's were cool enough to set me up with some really good space to shoot.

Need some advice. I'm looking to do close-ups on some stuff and need a proper lens for it. I recently got a 50mm 1:1.8 Canon EF lens for my DSLR but discovered that I had to be a 1.5 feet away from the subject (nearly longer than arm's length). Perhaps I don't realize what I need but is there a lens that would allow me to do close-up (macro) shots and be closer?

I want to use this for my cigar blog so I can take pictures of cigars, pens, whiskey and such.

Why are you feeling you want a macro shot? You should still get nice Depth of Field using that lens from a distance.

'Cuz my arms are not that long. ;) I need something that works a little better with my shorter arms.

I got a 55mm for my Nikon 40 dslr that is perfect for those close ups without being right on top of the subject.

i have a 135mm lens that might work for you. it's a fixed focal length, the depth of field is really nice. obviously, a fast lens would give you more lighting options.

you might want to take your camera to the local camera store and try some lenses out...rent one for a weekend, or just try some shots in the store. since you're shooting digital, you can see what your shots look like right then.

I use a lovely old Siggy 28 f2.8 which handles macro fairly well. The Nikkor 35 f1.4 is just dreamy, I wish it had autofocus.

Don't forget that a 50mm on a film camera is a 75mm on a digital.

just made a deal with a guy to buy his sigma 70-200mm f2.8. says he's only had it 3 months and doesn't use it much at all. i'm super excited.

this means i'll be able to use my own gear to shoot the burlesque brunch this coming sunday! yay!

Any other visual artists, photo junkies, and hobbiests willing to admit any amount of growing addiction to instagram?

I started instagram quite critical of the prepackaged filters that allowed folks with little sense of composition to make a trendy shot. Now though, I find that I'm not only enjoying posting my own shots, but following a few artists I admire, as well as friends and family who use the app.

And for those fortunate souls who don't use instagram, I share my instagrid (a website that displays your instagrams). shameless plug - my photo feed (http://instagrid.me/kristykay72/)

Recently, I've been keen on the idea of setting up instacanvas to offer for sale some of my better shots. Anyone try this yet? Feedback?

here in the south, i know for sure, maybe it's common all over this big beautiful world of ours, ... folks like to leave the chimney, ... just sitting there in the wide open space, ... the house is gone but the chimney remains. sometimes vines and such will be growing out the top. i want to photograph the chimneys. make a book. find the story behind each one. i have a few pictures but not on the computer. i need to do that!

Oh they're lovely, really very nice. Maybe you could add a link to your photobucket page in your signature for convenience? You have to know a little about photobucket to find your way to your beautiful photography. I just went to my own profile there and inserted your Qconnection where my own profile name was in the url to see your photos but not everyone knows to do that. You really have a nice commercial/studio style with some gorgeous photography. I like it a lot.

Now, having said that =) coincidentally enough, I have a couple angel photos that I too just uploaded to my photoblog the other day! There must be something in the air right now... the ARE all around us.
Here's a link to mine if anyone is interested in seeing them: http://faireunvoeu.wordpress.com/2013/01/18/walking-higher/ << It's clickable ... Walking Higher. I loved them and that moment so much, I'm going back later this week with some film to do it properly.

So I've been lax on taking pictures. However, I have been busy on eBay purchasing pictures. These ones (will post when I'm back home) are from the 1930-40s and are of women dressed as men (playing poker, smoking stogies and the like). I'm not sure if they were done just for a "lark" or a statement of butch identity but I do like them. If I ever get to build my man cave, I want these on the walls.

Fun stuff for the day: I saw this and all I could think was "Mmmmmmm.... photogs are spicy and crunchy!"

http://butchfemmephotoproject.com

I had forgotten where I first read about it until you posted this. Here is the current info:

"Update on the Butch/Femme Photo Project
It’s coming! It’s coming! This December, we’re going to be able to get printed copies of the Butch/Femme Photo Project book by Wendi Kali.

The culmination of the last few years of my life is about to happen. Yesterday I signed a publishing contract with an indie publisher here in Portland, Oregon called Blue Skirt Productions. They are going to publish the Butch/Femme Photo Project book!

I can’t even begin to explain how excited I am about this. I know that when I finally hold a copy of that book in my hands, I just might cry. I’ve put my heart and soul into this body of work and couldn’t be more proud of the way it’s turned out.

The publisher is shooting for a December 15th release date and a release party is in the works. I will post the info about all of that and let you know where you can get your copy just as soon as I have all of that information.

My sincere thanks and tremendous gratitude to all of those who have supported me through this journey. It’s truly been an amazing

Here’s part of the announcement by the publisher made this week:

Blue Skirt Productions is excited to announce our next publication: The Butch/Femme Photo Project, by photographer Wendi Kali.

The impetus of The Butch/Femme Project revealed itself many years ago, as Kali struggled with her own identity in her teens. She used books as her lifeline to others who were as confused as she was, but she had a hard time finding books that gave modern, personal perspectives of identity.

I am excited about this project as a friend of Wendi’s and as a participant. This book is filled with beautiful photography of a diverse group of people. Super, super proud of Wendi and excited to see the finished product.
