It always surprises me when there is little, if any, acknowledgement of the reason it is a holiday. We love time off, we like the extended weekend, but do we even take a moment to remember why we have it?

It always surprises me how people think their religion is "normal" and everyone else is worshipping idols. How "crossing yourself" and kneeling is acceptable but prostrating yourself is "weird".

The Quebec Government is trying to pass and enforce a charter that would secularise the public sector. Problem is, it's secularising everything except that which is Christian. The crucifix hanging in the National Assembly would be exempt from "secularising".

Pineault-Caron secular charter testimony goes viral on YouTube

Geneviève Caron and Claude Pineault were shocked to find people praying on all fours at Moroccan mosque

A family’s testimony at the secular charter hearings at the Quebec national assembly has gone viral thanks to YouTube.

Geneviève Caron and Claude Pineault testified late Thursday afternoon at the commission on Quebec’s controversial proposed secular charter that would ban the wearing of visible religious symbols in the public sector.

Interested in intolerance? Have a look at what is happening in Quebec.

The depths, intricacies, and idiosyncrasies of the human mind.

It is just glorious to behold the endless ways in which people process information and sensory input. I could sit for hours at a time and just quietly observe the wheels turning in as many different directions as there are people alive.

It's fascinating.

And it reminds me of the miraculousness of a simple thought.

How my family can come together over an event that otherwise we would have no idea each of us were even aware of. Yesterday, during a playoff game, we all were making comments on Facebook. Cousins and nieces who I hadn't heard from years ago are brought together over.....social media.

It's amazing that we can share moments that we weren't aware of years ago. To be a part of their life if just for comments or pushing the like button. The photographs that bring us into each other's busy lives, living across the country.

This surprises me the most...modern technology.

Even this, connecting thru here, brings us together!

There are threads that run throughout my life; maybe a language that catches my ear for no reason, a style or decor not of this time that feels right somehow, curious likes and attractions that are not of my upbringing yet call to me over time, again and again. The surprise comes when enough threads form a fabric of sorts that can be seen, telling me something of my soul's journey in this time and others......

Women who grow up to be "mean girls." They baffle me. I'm talking about women who even have daughters and granddaughters of their own. We should be lifting each other up, not tearing each other down. What surprises me? How people remember so much about things from the past. like in the throwback Thursday thread. I have to look this stuff up or google it to remember or see it in a movie or look at old family pictures or something.

Like the above post, I watch a movie and go huh we really did that, looked like that, wore that whatever. Then I thing about it and go yup we sure did. It surprises me I don't just remember stuff like that off the top of my head.

Once again the kindness of strangers has suprised me. I probably pushed mom too much today with long walks. After dinner we went to the Christmas light festival at the park. I dropped mom off at a park bench and headed to the restroom. The next thing that I saw was mom going down to the ground. She had reached for the park bench but lost her footing on uneven ground.

I ran for her but two guys beat me to her and they both picked her up and put her on the bench. The two young guys were not alone, people ran to my mom from every direction.

There are a lot of kind people walking around in the world.

The surprise of my tastebuds changing because of my diet...

That after a few weeks of a raw food vegan diet, I bought a small container of french fried onions (the type put on top of green bean casserole for Thanksgiving holiday meal), and I could taste the bitterness of it. I told myself "so this is what dead food tastes like, it doesn't have any nutrition." And they didn't have any bad ingredients in them! I threw them out.

It reminded me of a potluck lunch I attended. I brought organic strawberries. Someone there told me "those are the sweetest strawberries I've ever tasted!" I explained to him they were organic and didn't have the bitterness of the pesticides in them, and this is why there were so sweet.
