Does anyone have some good recommendations for literature with lesbian and queer themes? Could be anything from biographies to science fiction or a guide book to gay bars. I want to fill my bookshelf with lesbian books:)

This made me think of something. Does anyone remember those travel brochures for each state listing gay/gay friendly establishments that were published in the 90's? You could pick them up for free at your local gay bar (you know, just like the gay newspapers!). They would be stacked upright with little tabs between the states.

I think there was also an updated book you could buy each year for all the states.

The brochures were often wrong though...gay bars come and go really fast (at least back then)!

I wonder if the books at least are still around.

Those were the days!

There used to be gay newspapers!? Thats is so cool! I was born in the wrong decade for sure. I know there are loads of websites, but I've always preferred to have something psysical to hold when I read.

Looks like you can still pick up a copy of the Washington Blade.

For some reason I can't post the link though. There page has a list of locations to pick it up. So, you know, just fly over!

Is this the one? http://www.washingtonblade.com/

Haha yeah, all I need to get a gay newspaper is a ticket to the states. Easy peasy:p

Extra and extra west still run in canada.

The pink paper is in the UK.

I'm sure there are a few places in the bigger cities that have the readership for them. I find they have more events listed. Don't forget the dyke magazines like DIVA you can order.

If you have a copy of THIS BRIDGE CALLED MY BACK on your shelf, you'll be doing fine.

GO Magazine is a NYC-based publication and website that has lots of lesbo info.

I traveled around Europe for years with copies of Gaia's Guide. I wish I had the ones I made notes in. "Lesbian Connection"! still exists too. So analogue!

I remember the above as the first travel guide (outside of the one I can't think of).

Sorry to derail the thread so much!

Back to books!

Really, you can just walk into a gay/lesbian bookstore or look online. What are you looking for? Fiction? Non-fiction? Gay/lesbian history? Erotica? How to have lesbian sex (I remember a GF of mine who had never been with a woman before bought such a book before our first date..lol).

Hopefully, people will come in with suggestions.

Oh yeah, der, I have a book too.

There are several places that carry it, but if you order from the original publisher, you can see some reviews, read a sample and pick the platform you want.

I'll show you mine
8 Short Stories spanning 18 years and three countries: coming out as lesbian from bisexual, discovering a "Femme" ID and her desires in a dyke sub-culture sexuality, losing her first long-term relationship, learning about kink, disclosing an abused past to a lover, rediscovering sex after depression and (dyke) divorce, and ending with a dream of new love and sexual adventure.

Thank you thank you thank you to everyone for suggestions! I've looked through them all and have added a few to my amazon wishlist (also how cool is it that several of BFP members have published their own!)

How to have lesbian sex, I need that lol:p There are unfortunately no gay bookstores anywhere near where I live but I have tried to look some up at Amazon. I want to get really into queer literature and culture but dont know where to start.
I found one called The Well of Loneliness which is really good so far.
Lesbian history would be really good though. If someone could recommend something like that, especially butch/femme history I would be much obliged.

For a fun read, try Fannie Flagg's "Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe". The Lesbian content was removed for the film but it's definitely there in the book :)

stone butch blues is one of my favorites, and i loved the fried green tomatoes movie, now i have to check out the book!

http://zahrawithaz.livejournal.com/12471.html has a list of books written by queer people of color authors, many of whom are lesbian and several who write about lgbtq issues and characters.

Our own Leftwritefemme also has a whole slew of books available on Amazon too. Check out her sig line for links

Bard...Who's Radclyffe? Is it Radclyffe Hall or another author?

If said Radclyffe is a contemporary author then Radclyffe Hall, author of one of the errrm seminal lezzer books, The Well of Lonliness should be added to the list

I recommend checking out the old Women's Press and Virago back catalogues too.

I finished The Well of Loneliness a little while ago, it was painfully awesome.
