Another outstanding painting by Dali. This was a source of inspiration for one of my works of art.
I have added them both here....The painting by Dali is top. Mine is bottom.

I like this portrait for these reasons: symbolism, metaphor, and a particular realism that I find enchanting.
(i.e., the swans- mating rituals, mating for life as partners - mating concepts in general; the River - the plethora of social constuction pertaining to a myriad ideas - intentional use or metaphorical use; au natural beauty - the element behind living simply, authentically, dimensional applications; the tree and its leaves - for structural purpose; root ideas, anchoring principles.)

My favorite is a Deacon Trust piece of an angel in the woods. Now, that sounds pretty and innocuous, but Deacon Trust is an Outsider artist, and the angel looks pretty much like a Power Puff girl with crazy eyes and a blue dress with a white stain on it (which earned her the middle name "Monica")... I love her because she's so completely unexpected and I smile every time I look at her.
Oh, and did I mention there's glitter in the painting? How can you not love fine art that includes glitter???

Mark Langan is an artist whose medium is the cardboard boxes tossed by his neighbors. The corrugated edges create a surprisingly intriguing texture and flow the pieces. Very cool.

Pygmalion and Galeta
Oil on Canvas, 35 x 27 in.
The Metropolitan Museum of Art
New York
From Ovid's Metamorphoses, X, in which Pygmalion, a sculptor fell in love with an ivory statue he had carved.
"Pygmalion made offerings to Venus and made a wish. "I sincerely wished the ivory sculpture will be changed to a real woman." However, he couldn’t bring himself to express it. When he returned home, Cupid sent by Venus kissed the ivory sculpture on the hand. At that time, it was changed to a beautiful woman. A ring was put on Galatea's finger. It was Cupid’s ring which made love achieved. Venus granted his wish."

Leda and The Swan * Greek Mythology...
My Dad was a avid art collector and growing up, we always had Leda and The Swan in her many forms in our house. My friends would ask, why are there paintings of a woman having sex with a swan? There would begin the story (told hundreds of times by my dad) of Leda and The Swan (Zeus) and their love story.
This is probably one of my favorite renditions... Paul Prosper Tillier

My favorite artist is the Swede Carl Larsson (May 28, 1853 – January 22, 1919).I am always fascinated with his work because he painted so many pictures of his wife and children. His obvious love of "familijen or The Family" is evident and well respected by myself because that is how marriage should be.The devotion and love of his family radiates in all he has produced.
As a cowboy I am not very cultured but I love nature and animals and see art in almost everything e.g.,an old pair of cowboy boots, the bull elk I was fortunate enough to see in the woods near my farm (he was within 5 yards of me)and my Holstein bull who has perfect confirmation.
When my bull Thor urinates and then steps back and curls his lips back and uses his Jacobson gland (that all bovines have on the roof of their mouths)to taste his testosterone level,it is almost the most beautiful art work I have ever witnessed.

I really like Carl Larsson's work as well, but not so much for his family portraits as well as portraits of every day life, but for his paintings related to Norse mythology and the Germanic Heathen past. One of his painting's I've long been a fan of is his rendition of a Yule celebration/sacrifice (Midvinterblót) at the temple in Uppsala.

There is also one representing Þrymsviða where Thor and Loki are dressed in women's clothing in order to retrieve Thor's hammer from Þrym.

I played rugby for a team years ago and we had a Maori coach. He taught us the Haka and we did it before every game. Performing the haka is truly an amazing thing to experience. You feel the energy. It was a ritual that put us in that primal headspace and helped focus and deliver intensity on the field. I loved it. Thanks for sharing the AB video.

Love is
The funeral pyre
Where I have laid my living body.
All the false notions of myself
That once caused fear, pain,
Have turned to ash
As I neared God.
What has risen
From the tangled web of thought and sinew
Now shines with jubilation
Through the eyes of angels
And screams from the guts of
Infinite existence
Itself.
Love is the funeral pyre
Where the heart must lay
Its body.

Most Jean-Leon Gerome paintings do it for me, even though he was a bit of a jerk. But this one, "Duel After a Masquerade Ball" cracks me up. So... serious... yet, so many clowns. The original and the sketch were displayed at the Getty (http://www.getty.edu/) recently - amazing!
And yes, I do like Dali. I also really dislike cubism, abstract and impressionism.

For years I adored El Greco. The way he painted eyes and hands still amazes me. And that he placed himself in virtually all, if not all, group paintings is very funny to me.
Still love his work, but a number of years ago I came across a painting titled, Rosa LaRue A Montagne by Toulouse-Lautrec. Before then, I'd only known of his dance hall girls and advertisements. Rosa is totally different. I was drawn to the painting when I first saw her while browsing online, and was so surprised to find that he is the painter. I knew I had to see this painting in person and was delightfully surprised that she was a train ride away in Lower Merion, Pa. - The Barnes Foundation. Off I went, found her in room #22, and spent at least an hour looking at her from every possible angle. I also wrote about her - "Contemplating Rosa". And of course, I have a print.
If anyone is interested in seeing this particular painting, the Foundation is moving to Center City Philadelphia. Sad in a way, because the Lower Merion location is a one of a kind; but good in a way because she will be a hands throw from me. Renoir, Matisse, Rembrandt, Rousseau, Modigliani, and more are also part of the Barnes collection.

Not a fan of snakes - reptiles are creepy and icky! I just loved the suprise of a snake on the stairs. Kind of an Addams Family thing.
Speaking of the Addams Family...I loved the portrait they had of the Giraffe (at the top of the stairs in their living room) intrigued me as a child and sparked my interest/love of the surreal.
My Mom is responsible for my art education. She was an artist (as am I) and there were loads of books in our house. If we were traveling, she made sure we visited museums. She encouraged me and my brothers to nurture our inner artist and express ourselves in our favourite media. I had 4 years of art in high school and adored every second. But like her parents (who forbade her to study art in college - "You can't eat art!" - is what they told her), she did not encourage us to pursue a career in the arts.
It was from her many books that I discovered Pieter Brueghel the Younger. What amazing works! Fascinating...I have spent hours searching some of his work. There is so much going on.

I absolutely adore Vargas! In my teen years I would daydream about being a Vargas Girl. My progressive mother recognized that my oldest brother would be interested in Playboy, etc., so she let him know which magazines were welcome in her house. Everyone read them - sometimes Mom and I would discuss articles, etc.
In his novel "The Stepford Wives," Ira Levin included a character, Ike Mazzard, based on Vargas. He would draw portraits of the women before they were "Stepfordized" and then the new, improved version was an "Ike Mazzard girl."

I have a guestion for art lovers here especially the lovers of Impressionist artists. I remember the teacher in art class showing us a painting that I just loved. And I have been looking for it for years on the internet. I believe it was either an Italian or a Spanard that painted it.
It shows a scene with St. Francis of Assis; a very detailed painting of him with animals. One can almost see the individual eyelashes on the subjects that is how detailed it is. I thought it was El Greco or Velaquez but have not see anything like that in their works.
Anyone have any idea?

From the description you provide it sounds like an Italian Renaissance painting, rather an Impressionist. But that is just a guess.

Charles Rohlfs 1853-1936. He was a American furniture maker. I love gothic furniture and I find his style very gothic , He did some furniture for buckingham place. Would love to have anything of Rohlfs for my bedroom

Wow! What a great lot of art lovers you are! I have enjoyed the posts and the wide variety of art represented.
Several years ago I went to a traveling MOMA exhibit that came to Houston. There were many famous paintings including Starry Night by Van Gogh. I had seen the painting many times in books and frankly wasn't a huge Van Gogh fan. But as I stood in front if it, you could see every single brush stroke and suddenly I felt overwhelmed with emotion. It was like I was standing there watching him paint it and you could feel the raw power, love, pain and desire for perfection all in one moment. I actually started to tear up right there in the museum. I have never felt that way about a piece of art before or since, and feel it was one of those rare moments in life when your soul is truly touched by something.
I felt very similarly when I saw Il Davide (I actually saw all three, but I am speaking of the one in the Accademia). Standing in front of it was very moving. There is a reason it is such an art cliche.
Wow, love this thread! So many artists came to mind, here's only a few:
Caravaggio: for his dramatic use of chiaroscuro
Munch: well, b/c, who hasn't felt like that guy in The Scream?
Michelangelo, Bernini, Rodin: I think sculpture is magical (Come on now, Ecstasy of Saint Teresa--amazing!)
O'Keeffe: she was just pretty damn cool. Strong. Brilliant.
Kahlo: one of my absolute favorites. Her work touches me deeply.
My kid: I am biased, but I think she is brilliant!
Oh, I haven't even gotten to the photographers. And don't get me started on dancers...

Sculptures
History
Frederic Remington (1861-1909) cast 22 different subjects. The first foundry with which he worked was the Henry-Bonnard Bronze Company in New York. Four different sculptures were cast in bronze, starting in 1895, using the sand-casting method. They were The Broncho Buster, The Wounded Bunkie, The Wicked Pony, and The Scalp. In 1900 Remington began working exclusively with the Roman Bronze Works, New York. They produced his bronzes using the lost-wax bronze casting process until his death in 1909. Remington's widow, Eva, authorized the foundry to continue casting Remington's bronzes, until her death in 1918. By direction of Eva Remington's will, the foundry destroyed the molds shortly after her death

I happened upon this late last year and it took my breath away.
The premise is that the artist, Marina Abramovic, becomes the art. Living, breathing, reflective. She sits in a chair, either in front of a table or not, and those viewing her exhibit have the opportunity to sit across from her. She is stoic, silent, reflective.
I think what moved me most about this piece was the people who sat across from her. Some cried, some smiled. Their faces so were so open, so honest.
I have to stop and think of how I would feel in such a situation, or how she felt. To have locked eyes with so many people, to have shared their secrets without a word! Gah! I think the concept is so beautiful.
Here are a couple portraits that I fancied:

And the artist herself (isn't she beautiful?):

AS I posted earler I bought a watercolor that was signed by jCMadden, well ive been doing some checking up on this picture, seems like jCMadden has works that have been soled in several art auctions..if the signature is really hers my $7.95 watercolor will be worth a fair amount of $$.Her history is amazeing she was born of slaves and ended up a millionair liveing in NYC,her family had a buisness of hair products for black men and women, she was born in Louisiana and passed in 1919 at age 58.I am still doing some reserch and have been in contact by email with the last auction house that sold a watercolor of hers that is very simular to the one I have.I dont know if it will pan out cause im not that lucky, but one can dream.Since she passed in 1919 there is no telling how old this picture is.

Ilya Repin's oil painting of Barge Haulers on the Volga is beautiful to me. I know nothing about him at all (will do a bit of research on him when I get the time), but this painting spoke to me in ways that touched my heart deeply. I felt the struggle, hardship, and desolate atmosphere that this painting seemed to convey through the illustrative framwork evoked in this painting.

The indexicality and iconicity expressed in this multi-mixed media presentation of art work, is amazing to me! The doubling of entendre's - the many messages one could possibly get from this work of art, seems to me, provocative by nature: it's mesmerizing, soothing and yet provokes and invokes specialized ways in which humans communicate what's on our mind. I love the semotic visualization process this peice of work evokes for those who appreciate this type of art.

I do adore Gustav Klimt, the shapes, colors.
Some of the women muses looking so haughty and bitchy!

My friend, photographer Andrew Kaiser. Because in my opinion, he truly sees all that is beautiful in women...
Unfortunately, I can not show many here, because they are mostly works of art that are nudes. But Google him and you'll find much better examples of what I am talking about. He is incredible.

Edward Hopper (July 22, 1882 – May 15, 1967)...American Painter
He is best known for his work "Nighthawks". The effective use of light and shadow to create mood is central to Hopper’s method and has been compared to the cinematography of film noir. I find the 'starkness' of it appealing.
Most of Hopper's figure paintings focus on the subtle interaction of human beings with their environment...carried out with solo figures, couples, or groups. His primary emotional themes are solitude, loneliness, regret, boredom, and resignation. He expresses the emotions in various environments, including the office, in public places, in apartments, on the road, or on vacation. As if he were creating stills for a movie or tableaux in a play, Hopper positioned his characters as if they were captured just before or just after the climax of a scene.

I came across Gayle Anita one day while browsing the web for mosaic art. << LINK (http://artbygayleanita.com/pb/wp_e849422d/wp_e849422d.html) >>
I am totally drawn to this art form; possibly because of item connections to sustainable forms of reclaiming items that are broken or neglected or even the idea that this particular art form is semiotic by nature in capturing abstract shapes, thoughts, ideas or any type of process (we could say) and utilizes that type of intersection where a beautiful collision melds into something entirely beautiful.
I like this particular piece of hers in that even though she titled this work of art: a Crawdad. To me, it reminds me of lobsters... or any ocean or river animal whose makeup includes a shelled body. I like how the Coors can interrupts the flow of dynamics and calls attention to the ways in which humans have thoughtlessly polluted the seas, oceans, rivers (water resources in general). In addition, I also like the cherish how she borrows conceptually the idea of indexicality and iconicity: The dangling of hook and bait in the water. :)
From what I gather from her website, she's a west coast native and her own profession took her to the east coast and where she practices her craft is unknown to me but I she possesses a gift for mosaic art form.

I love this and have a print hanging in my apartment...Nude Descending a Staircase No. 2 by Marcel Duchamp. It was not well received in 1913; most of the Cubists at the time rejected it and one critic said it resembled an explosion in a shingle factory.
When you look closely it resembles one of those motion photographs taken with strobe lights...

Today, while wandering the internet in search of ideas for artistic ways of using postcards to form a work of art (a collage), I found the above hand-made postcard that was given to someone on their birthday. I love postcards and have quite a few that I have given to friends and family and have recieved numerous postcards, over time.
Once in a great while, I actually happen to come across exhibits of postcards as an art form: There's an interesting place to dine in the Hawthorne area (Nick's) and along the wall of the business, postcards to the business owner (over the years) appear alongside of other exhibits of art.
I think the thing I like about a collage of postcards is that each post card tells about a specific time someone took the time to express something particular (or even peculiar) between the sender and sendee. I have a friend who saved every single post card they got from someone they knew from years ago (I think they attended art school together, at one time) and I even have a friend who uses photographs, sent to them, as a means to create an exhibit of art - either at home or wherever their form of art is displayed (museums or galleries or places where art like this is found).
Given that I like postcards and have quite a few, I was thinking of making my own collage of postcard art.

There are so many artists and works I appreciate and love, throughout the centuries.
Van Gough's Starry Night is a favorite.
And I have to say da Vinci's Mona Lisa has always drawn me in.
I have to ad that one of the best things to me at the Butch Voices Conference were the works displayed by queer artists. One woman did some charcoal drawings of a post menopausal, Native American butch that struck me to my soul. Maybe someone will remember her name?
Elizabeth Hoague Cleaveland is a local favorite of mine.
Do you know if the artist was 2 Spirit also? If so, you might try googling 2 Spirit artists charcoal (or drawing) some version of that. I'd like to know myself now!

Tracy Chevalier transports readers to a bygone time and place in this richly-imagined portrait of the young woman who inspired one of Vermeer's most celebrated paintings.
History and fiction merge seamlessly in this luminous novel about artistic vision and sensual awakening. Girl with a Pearl Earring tells the story of sixteen-year-old Griet, whose life is transformed by her brief encounter with genius . . . even as she herself is immortalized in canvas and oil.

I like this painting because it gives a snapshot of a much simpler and relaxing time.
My favorites are Pollock and Dali. Their works have a WTF and rebellious quality that I appreciate. They were non-conformists which always ranks pretty high with me. Dali gets a few extra points because his work makes me wonder... WTH's going on here?! … and he was Spanish. :koolaid:

So much beautiful art to like, like still life paintings of flowers in vases.
I like this one: Roses by Pascal de Beucker (1881-1944).
https://i.pinimg.com/736x/30/f3/c1/30f3c1211f5208bf1d382bd856aab25f--pressing-flowers-art-flowers.jpg
I also like Claude Monet's Lilac Iris painting... Beautiful shades of violet-blue flowers.
https://i.ebayimg.com/images/i/232480827058-0-1/s-l1000.jpg
And I also like still life paintings depicting flowers with other interesting specimens we see in natural settings, like butterflies or dragonflies or other interesting species that interact with flowers in nature. For example, the painting below, titled: Ambrosius Brosschaert Flower Still Life.
https://d2jv9003bew7ag.cloudfront.net/uploads/Ambrosius-Bosschaert-Flower_Still_Life.jpg
I like to paint still life type paintings, but it is definitely a challenge to create a still life painting which looks true-to-life. I admire art work by artists who have a natural talent to paint such things. I like to create my own flower bouquets at home, so I might just try my hand at painting one particular bouquet I have in my sitting room. Maybe this summer I will take that on as a summer project, to see if I can create something beautiful.
