Since we are in the middle of summer and people are likely travelling, I thought it might be fun if people posted about places they've been and things they've seen that might not be found in the regular tourist brochures. Perhaps you've found a great secluded beach, a funky restaurant, a cool club, an interesting museum....whatever.

One of my favourite places in the world is Vancouver Island (I lived there for a time, as a child). As you arrive at Departure Bay on the ferry from Horseshoe Bay you will find yourself in Nanaimo...home of the famous Nanaimo Bars and less famous Bathtub Races. Sure, Nanaimo may not be as beautiful or quaint as Victoria but it holds some hidden treasures.

PIPER'S LAGOON: When I was a child this lagoon was almost unknown to anyone but the locals. It still rarely gets too crowded and it's the perfect place to take children for a day's hike, swim, and picnic. From the many cliffs you are likely to see seals frolicking in the sea. It's an even better place for a romantic stroll and an intimate picnic dinner with that special someone. There are so many secluded little nooks and crannies, you are likely to find privacy.

The lagoon is fairly large and you will be able to find your own private piece of Heaven. You park at one end and walk along a narrow, straight dyke between the lagoon and the restless surf. The waves from the open water have created a marvellous pebbly beach with a great deal of mermaid's tears (a beautiful product of beach glass). Then it gets rocky; there is some non-technical rock-climbing for those who desire it, and one larger hill covered in arbutus and Garry Oak, eagles, driftwood and views of the Strait. Remember, this is not a California beach it's a typical PNW beach. Google Piper's Lagoon, Nanaimo BC Canada for map and directions.

Visiting Churchill Downs is one the most recommended places in Louisville. If the horses aren't running on the track, Churchill Downs has museum to visit for the horse racing enthusiast. Churchill Downs officially opened in 1875, and held the first Kentucky Derby and the first Kentucky Oaks in the same year. Churchill Downs has also hosted the renowned Breeders' Cup on eight occasions, most recently in 2011. Churchill Downs Incorporated owns and operates the racetrack. The capacity of Churchill Downs is 120,000.

I've never been much for the bar scene, but the Bovine Sex Club is one of my favourite local hangouts. Known as The Bovine to locals, this is a bar that's all about the music. This is the place to be to hear independent musicians and artists, playing everything from rock to punk to alternative to rockabilly. Bonus: It's in a cool part of town (and they still let me in). :)

Ridge upon ridge of forest straddles the border between North Carolina and Tennessee in Great Smoky Mountains National Park. World renowned for its diversity of plant and animal life, the beauty of its ancient mountains, and the quality of its remnants of Southern Appalachian mountain culture, this is America's most visited national park.

Cannot travel directly to Havana from the States. Had to go through Mexico after applying for a professional research license. It was worth the effort.

One of the most beautiful islands in the Caribbean and the weather is perfect in the winter. Warm and breezy.

There's lots to see in Havana, but be sure to visit the gallery of artist José Rodríguez Fuster. He specializes in ceramics, painting, drawing, engraving, and graphic design. Through the sale of his paintings, ceramics and other works, Mr. Fuster has carried out many renovations and decorative art projects throughout the fishing town of Jaimanitas (on the west outskirts of Havana). His work has been compared to that of Gaudi in Barcelona.

This is the entrance to his gallery and workshops:

I was fortunate enough to spend some extended time in Tanzania. If you are ever there, try to make it to the island of Zanzibar. Now Zanzibar is a playground for the rich, but don't let that stop you from going if you are short on funds. You can always go there for the day. Take a boat over in the morning and return in the evening. That's what I did and I had a most memorable day. The beaches are gorgeous...sand as white as snow!

If you're ever in NYC for summer, you have to hit the Hamptons. I mean, it's the Rivera of the east coast. Montauk has a cool lighthouse. On the road to said lighthouse is a food shack where you can gobble down a delicious lobster roll! BTW, go during the week because unless you have a helicopter, you won't get there or back.

Oh, and of course, there's Fire Island. Sail over. Sail back. You like to sail, right?

White sand, sound of surf, relaxation and food. I mean, seriously. That's summer in NY for me.

If you happen to be in the Vancouver airport in British Columbia, please take the time to go to the international terminal and view this beautiful sculpture by Haida native, Bill Reid (1920 - 1998). The sculpture is an impressive 20 feet long, 13.2 feet high, and weighs nearly 11,000 pounds. The Spirit of Haida Gwaii is intended to represent the Aboriginal heritage of the Haida Gwaii region in British Columbia Canada's Haida Gwaii, formerly called the Queen Charlotte Islands. The sculpture is located near the food fair and there is seating surrounding the sculpture. Grab a snack and take in this beautiful piece of art before your flight.

If you're ever through Little Rock, stop and see the Old Mill. If you've seen Gone With The Wind, the mill in the credits isn't in Atlanta or even Georgia-it's in North LR. It was moved and reassembled at the current park, but the flooring and wheel are authentic.

Actually, if you go to the Quapaw Quarter of historic houses, you will see Ville Marre. Those of you of a certain age will recognize it as the Sugarbaker house from Designing Women.

Yes, Lake Louise has one of the biggest ski resorts in North America. Yes, there is the luxury resort The Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise. But after you have tired of trying to keep up with the rich kids, don a pair of jeans and go horseback riding along the trails encircling the lake. There are many packages available. Some packages include luxury end-of-ride pampering (pfft!) and other more hard core packages include a day long ride with a bbq lunch at the halfway mark. Don't be content to stare out the window of your luxury hotel room. Become one with the spectacular surroundings. If you are deathly afraid of horses, hike the darn trails. Just do it! :)

Vienna is a sensory feast...the music, the architecture, the food, the history. If you have ever dreamed of travelling to Vienna, you know very well all the things it has to offer. However, you would be remiss if you neglected visiting the Austrian National Library. It is located in the Hofburg Palace. The library contains several museums, houses many and varied special collections, and hosts special exhibits throughout the year. Of course, you can google everything you need to know about this fabulous library. What I can tell you - standing in this opulent building which houses so many books, historical documents, and musical scores, is an experience you will never forget. If you love books, your heart will soar with satisfaction at the respect and reverence books receive in this library. You will not be allowed to touch much of the collection, but your eyes will admire the beautiful wood shelving and frescoed ceiling, your body will reel from the smell of the leather bindings, and your ears will delight in the music of footsteps on the marble floors. I have only enjoyed one library more - Trinity College Library Dublin. But, perhaps, that will be another post.

MONA: The world's most far-out museum
MONA Museum of Old and New Art

Chiseled into an escarpment on the banks of the Derwent River in the northern suburbs of Hobart is a subterranean fortress housing one of the most confronting and controversial collections of art in the world.

The crowning achievement of Tasmanian David Walsh, a mathematician and art collector who made millions perfecting algorithms that let him to beat casinos and bookies at their own game, MONA (Museum of Old and New Art) has made a name for itself by breaking every rule in the book ...

“When you go to a conventional museum you are forced to walk up stairs and past pillars meant to make you feel small and then have academics tell you it’s culture,” ... “But David wanted none of that so he built this place underground.”

Visitors are given an iPod touch that uses GPS to work out which artwork they are standing in front of, then gives a running commentary from Walsh himself, interviews with the artists and plenty more. That all comes via a button on the iPod marked “Art Wank”

From the lobby, a spiral staircase descends 17 meters underground, ending in a cathedral-like basement cordoned by a 250-million-year-old Triassic sandstone wall that Walsh, who once described himself as a “rabid atheist,” left exposed to challenge creationists on their beliefs.

What follows are three levels of steel and stone festooned with art and objects based around sex, death and evolution that are concurrently shocking, educational and entertaining.

To impart just a taste of the museum, first among these is a chocolate sculpture of the remains of a Chechen suicide bomber. Yes, chocolate.

One level up, a wall has been lined with white porcelain molds of female genitalia, while another wall shows a very large image of a man engaged in an unhealthy act with a dog.

A room-sized machine made of giant test tubes fed by a series of pumps parodies the digestive tract by turning food into a brown gooey paste, while an engorged and distended Porsche Carrera sagging with fat offers comment on mindless overindulgence.

Then there’s “Bit.fall,” a “rain-painting machine” created by German born artist Julius Popp. Spanning two stories, this multi-million dollar contraption uses 128 computer-controlled nozzles to drip cascades of water in the shape of phrases selected daily from news websites. You really need to see it, of course.

Sprinkled among these masterpieces of modern art, as though there were never a reason to keep them apart, are selections from Walsh’s private collection of antiquities.

They include a 1,500-year-old Egyptian sarcophagus, gold coins taken from one of the statues at the Partheon in Athens and a collage made of Neolithic flints.

MONA is built on the ground of Moorilla Estate, Tasmania’s second-oldest vineyard...Visitors can also stay the night at one of eight luxurious art-laden pavilions inspired by shipping containers and stylish A-frame homes of the 1960s that look like Darth Vader’s lair.

Combined with an outdoor concert stage set on a grassy hillock, a book shop, jewelry store and the scenic river bush land setting, it’s little wonder MONA topped “Gourmet Traveller” magazine’s list of the top 100 places to visit in the world.

MUSEUM OF BROKEN RELATIONSHIPS ZAGREB CROATIA

"Amazing audience and media response (more than 180.000 visitors) during the Museum’s international tour encouraged us to establish the Museum’s permanent collection in Zagreb (Croatia) in October 2010. The Museum of Broken Relationships is located in the beautiful baroque Kulmer palace (dated 1776, classified as national heritage) in the Upper Town – a historical part of Zagreb rich in tourist attractions. An unavoidable sight in your exploration of Zagreb and a unique emotional journey around the world through hundreds of love break-ups."

I'll confess, I've never been but sounds useful.

So homoe, sounds like you like Chicago. I grew up in Indy, and moved to Chicago at age 16. Got a couple places to visit.

Chicago: Nat'l Leather Archives on Clark St.
Chicago: Ride all the "L" routes. Worth the time. ImHO, Chi. has the best mass transit system in the country. Beats out MARTA, NYC, BART, et al.
Chicago: Chicago Board of Trade (during trading) and the Commodities Mkt.
Chicago: Oak St. Beach in the summer.
Chicago: Brookside Zoo
Chicago: Picnic in Lincoln Park
Chicago: Rush St. at night
Chicago: Halstead Ave. weekend nights and/or gay pride weekend

There are way too many neat things to list. It's my favorite city, can you tell? Definitely worth a visit there. Isn't just a "if you're there see" type of city.

Indianapolis: Indpls. Motor Speedway Museum, #1 of course. Indy car racing
is awesome.
Indianapolis: Monument Circle (center of the city WWI monument) summer
or during the Christmas season. It's beautiful..lighted from top
to bottom with Christmas lights.
Indianapolis: The Children's Museum is world renowned.
Indianapolis: Drive/ride down Meridian St. to see all the 1800s mansions.
Indianapolis: Benjamin Harrison's home and that whole neighborhood that is
very historical...neat old houses.

Indy is only about 1.5 hrs southeast of Chicago on Chi's Dan Ryan followed by I-65 right in to downtown Indianapolis.

Seattle

☆☆☆☆☆ Canlis (Queen Anne neighborhood, Lake Union).

---- this restaurant serves the most exquisite foods. Very expensive, but so worth it. Very special occasion type venue. Must have reservations. Especially if you wish to dine there during any holiday season. It's almost too late to book an dinner date for Thanksgiving or Christmas. It's that awesome.

☆☆☆☆☆ Bainbridge Island: Multikeo Roasters. Great place to get breakfast, a cup of coffee or tea or hot chocolate. Relaxing atmosphere, very friendly staff.

Portland

☆☆☆☆☆ Mississippi Studios and Goose Hollow Inn.

--- No reservations needed. Food is exceptional at both places. Burgers at Miss.; Reuben sandwich at Goose Hollow. Moderately expensive. Settings are very relaxing. Both neighborhood's are simply beautiful.

McCall, Idaho

☆☆☆☆☆ The Yacht Club. Mostly good pub fare, local talented bands, the best thing is the outdoor dining during summer. Payette lake, with sail boats and the Ponderosa pines surrounding the lake, is simply gorgeous.

BONUS:

There's a little roadside cafe on your way to Crater Lake, but closer to Diamond Lake. They serve the best pie in the world. They also serve breakfast; then I think they open up.again for dinner in the late afternoon and close around 9pm. The menu is usually like home style meal fare. Reasonably priced. But omg, the pies are insanely good.

Bonus: lots of local people like dining at this sports bar and you're most likely to meet some very interesting people! :)

☆☆☆☆☆ Located in downtown Portland. If you find yourself stranded by gridlock traffic conditions, this place is homey for an upscale type of venue. Reasonably priced menu. Service, for the most part, is okay. Live DJ Tues-Friday. Bonus: You can find editions of newspapers not readily available at other similar venue businesses. They also have card decks and TV and its location makes it easy to board an light rail train to the airport or to take the Union Pacific train to locations north or south of Portland.

With the trip some are making plans for I thought I'd toss a couple of "other" options if you up for venturing in Sin City. IF you do beware the drivers are NUTS! Taxi drivers in places like San Francisco have nothing on these fools.

The Neon Grave yard is history with the old signs from the strip and local land marks. The tour guides are well informed and makes for GREAT photos.
The Erotic Heritage Museum
The National Atomic Testing Museum
Fremont street is more like the old Vegas where you can walk down the street like in the 80"s and 90"s plus the Zip Line and street shows

If you want some thing more natural their is Mt Charleston (my personal fav) Including some locations you can pull over to walk an easy path to see the atomic rings that are still in the landscape.

Or Red Rock is a nice scenic drive hike or mountain climb depending on your skill set.

Recommended places to stay would be
Red Rock Casino
Suncoast Hotel & Casino
Aliante Casino + Hotel + Spa

Best Casinos to Win are the Station casinos, designed with locals in mind.

If you ever find yourself in southern Oregon, here is a great place to stop to eat a wonderful homemade meal or have a fabulous slice of pie. It's located on Hwy 62, in a tiny town called Prospect, Oregon. It's near Crater Lake, Diamond Lake, and if you talk with locals, you can be given directions on how to find natural hot springs locations, nearby.

Beckie's Pies is a favorite place to dine. Check.out their website for more info and or to book reservations.

My favorite place to stay at the coast is The Purple Moon Inn.

It's close by to Chinook Winds Casino, and sits on the north end of the coastal community in Lincoln City, Oregon.

There are 3 suites. I've stayed in each one, they're simply beautiful and very charming. There are lots of places to shop for local art, kites, smoked salmon, and it's also home to Mo's Seafood & Chowder Restaurant..... very yummy food....which, Mo's sits on the southerly side of town, down by Siletz Bay. On any day, you can watch sea lions basking across the inlet and hear the pounding ocean surf.

Kah-Nee-Ta Resort & Spa

Located on the high desert, past Mt. Hood, somewhat near Madras, Oregon is an resort located on tribal lands of the Warm Springs Indian Reservation. Amenities include an unique spa of warm spring pools guarded by sculptures of Bear. The lodge and casino are not far from the spa. My favorite treat to get after soaking in the hot springs fed pools is Indian Fry Bread with Marionberry jam. Omg, it's a meal by itself and oh so scrumptious. Of course, to get there, you'll need to think carefully about the mileage per gallon of gas your car uses because the last place to get a reasonable price for gasoline is in Sandy (which is before you go up and over Mt. Hood). Otherwise, gasoline at small service stations nearest the resort is....fairly expensive. The pines on the high desert are idigeneous to the terrain. Red lava rock lines the ages old roads to drive on to the reservation. You will most likely notice the subtle hints of desert sage, pine, and other interesting vegetation scenting the air. And,,,,,, it's home to antelope, eagles, and bear and other ruminants living in the woods.

Word to the wise: cell tower service is limited in this area. Go in the summer to late fall to enjoy it at peak season. There's nothing like the scent of desert rain at Kah-Nee-Ta. :stillheart:

In Other Words

This unique women's center used to be located in the Hawthorne dist. of Portland Oregon, but now finds its home in the Albina neighborhood, deep in the northeast sector of Portland. It's a place for feminists and Lesbian members of the community to gather and plan projects of outreach to others in the greater Portland area. I once used to drop by the original Hawthorne location to browse books or magazines or buy post cards or attend gatherings. At heart of the organization's mission is the fact that they are an independent book store, carrying books which center upon women's issues and more importantly, Lesbian issue's. They host events and also provide other resources for feminists and Lesbian's, alike.

Kätzchen, thank you so much for posting all the great Portland sights, it brings back so many great memories, especially Arlene Schnitzer concert hall, since I used to work for the Oregon Symphony. If you want to experience Chicago without all the headaches of traffic and expense of parking this is one way to go! One of the times I took this tour, the tour guide was a huge movie buff and every time we pass anywhere that they had shot any part of a movie he made mention of it....

You might want to go for lunch..the crowd from the Chicago Tribune rushes and and they are a sight to see in and of themselves! Food isn't anything special but it'll fill you up and then it's just a short walk down for dessert at Garrett's Popcorn!

Don't be disappointed if you don't see any billy goats....I think the city of Chicago has a regulation against them being in the city UNLESS of course there is one roaming around out in Wrigleyville!

Don't forget to check out the Mezzanine Level! You reach it by going UP to the second level then going DOWN an escalator.

There used to be some neat stores down there at one time, not sure now, as it's been awhile since I've been there.

If you're visiting Portland, Oregon and you're looking for a great way to go visit Multnomah Falls or Rooster Rock, then plan your trip via the luxury bus line service which departs Gateway Transit Center and is a collaborative metro area project in cooperation with TriMet.

Check their website for daily scheduled trips. It's economical, and exceptionally convenient. Ride out to Multnomah Falls on am early departing route, stay all day and hike, then return on an evening departure returning back to Gateway Transit Center.

Von's Roasthouse was in business for 25 years at 7th and Pine Street in Seattle!

A few years ago they changed their name to Von's 1000 Spirits & moved to a location at 1225 1st Ave. If you're ever in the Downtown area of Seattle don't miss this gem!

If you're ever in Seattle or over in West Seattle, I've heard that you can find awesome food entrée's which feature an Asian Fusion blend of Hawaiian & Korean blend of cuisine. Close friends of mine (Heidi and her husband) just dined at the location closest to Cornish University because their oldest son is beginning his freshman year at that school. Anyway, they say this type of cuisine is very tasty. They had Kahlua Pork Sliders and Spicy Pork Tacos and house made Kimchi.

I like to try certain spicy cuisine, so I may try out Marination Ma Kai one day. Especially the Kahlua Pork Sliders. Sounds yummy to me. :)

We ate here this past Thursday. They have a huge gay rainbow flag now hanging on the front of the building so I assume they are at the very least "gay friendly". We had the egg rolls (which are not spring rolls) and General Tso chicken. The egg rolls come with a unique tasting dipping sauce not the typical sweet and sour sauce. I switched to a hot mustard sauce to finish off my egg roll. To be honest the General Tso chicken was just average, but there are plenty of other items on the menu to order from.
