I'm really interested in what people are paying for gas in their area. It seems to vary so much. I'm in Seattle and paying $3.28 (for regular) right now. That's too high:sigh:

Where I am on the Canadian East Coast, it's currently around 110 cents a litre, which converts to around $3.65/gallon if we're using US measurements. So... roughly the same as what girlin2une is paying over in Ontario.

I'm actually really pleased with this. It's the lowest it's been in four years out here and by a significant amount. Just a few months ago I was paying upwards of 140+ cents a litre, which is $4.65/gallon.

I guess it's all relative. Personally, I would love to pay $3.28/gallon! That would be 98 cents a litre! OMG. :| I would feel like that lady in the Ikea commercials when it came time to pay at the pump. "START THE CAR!"

Forgot to say where - Northeast/mid-atlantic
87 Octane, 10% Ethanol

Would love to find non-Ethanol around here, but the closest pump is several hours away. Often they are located at marinas.

http://pure-gas.org/

Pure gas is better for your car and definitely better gas mileage. In some places it is more expensive than non-pure gas, though.

What is really crazy is the broad variation in prices across the USA alone, not even including other countries!

When we were in Texas last week, we paid around $2.35 for regular unleaded. A couple of days after we headed back, dear wife's best friend texted us a picture of the sign in front of the little gas station we were buying gas from there. $1.99!!!! :|

On the way back, via mostly I-10, we paid an average of $2.57 along the route through west Texas, New Mexico and Arizona. We tend to run premium gas in the wife's and my vehicles (2012 Durango R/T and 2011 Ram 1500 Big Horn) because both of them have 5.7L Hemi engines, but we don't always do that. Throughout the entire Texas trip, we never paid over $2.80/gallon for 93 octane (they sell 93 octane in TX and some other parts of the South). The Durango is certified to burn E85 gas, but I wouldn't ever put that in that vehicle, unless I absolutely had to.

Here in Vegas, Sam's Club, up on the corner from us, is selling regular unleaded for $2.60, as of the day before yesterday, when I filled my truck up. I paid $2.80 for 91 octane.

They say that gas prices are headed down again????

Terminal Facilities

California's nearly 100 terminals receive petroleum and petroleum products by tanker, barge, pipeline, rail or truck. Most of California's terminals are marine terminals. At these facilities petroleum or product is transferred from or to tankers or barges. Tankers loaded with Alaska North Slope petroleum, for example, enter marine terminals in northern and southern California, where the crude oil is then sent to refineries by pipeline for processing. An example of pipeline receipts of petroleum at a terminal is heavy California petroleum produced in the Bakersfield area that is sent by pipeline to a refinery at Martinez.

Terminals also serve as refiner's wholesale distribution points for products. Product, such as gasoline, is sold to distributors (jobbers) who then sell to consumers through the distributors' own retail stations. The distributor may also resell the gasoline to other station dealers. Gasoline can also be sold directly to station dealers from the terminal. The marketing structure differs depending on the type of product being sold.

Yes, I understand that. Rather than being direct, I was indirectly but clumsily responding to Dee's post about decreasing gas prices causing oil rig workers to lose their jobs.

Production continues here in California, despite the drop in prices. However, what happens in the south may indeed be different than what happens in the west.

When I started to research why gas prices go up and down in California and how it ultimately affects us, the consumer; I realized it is a far bigger issue than on the surface of what we pay for gas.

I do apologize for deviating from the intent of the thread, which is "What are you paying for gas right now"!

No, please post anything that might help us understand! I have been surprised (and pleased) by falling prices...but WHY are they falling, and when are they going to hike them again?

As you know, here in California prices are down over $2 per gallon....the oil companies are not known for their low prices and lack of billions in profits; it worries me that we are going to see huge jumps just when we have gotten used to having some spare change in our pockets.

Anya, Ms.Tinkerbelly is right, I am interested as well why prices are so low. It seems like an appropriate direction for the thread.

I hope that dee comes back and explains. Honestly, my understanding is that the oil production has not changed and the talk of less work is Republican propaganda. I thought maybe this is where you were going...that is why I was so interested in understanding the article.

I have several cousins that work in the oilfield industry and they aren't being laid off, they are actually working overtime drilling more locations and re-opening the closed pumping sites that were shut down during the 1980's to preserve our oil in the ground for future needs. There is also a boom in a northern state of one of the Dakota's that is drilling like mad there and hiring new oilfield workers. My neighbor's son in law took a job up north in the Dakota's drilling for oil. He makes more money there than he did here in the south working on a drilling rig.

Also, here is an article that helps us to understand why gas prices are falling :

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/10/28/in-most-of-the-us-gas-costs-3-gallon_n_6062056.html

Hey y'all... I really don't want to ruin the spirit of everyone's fun while WE (of course I am enjoying our $2.16 gallon) enjoy a break in our expenses wherever we can get them.

It has always been like this down here, low gas prices = oil field workers out of work. From what I understand, simply put, when the demand goes down, prices drop and the oil stays in the earth. They just don't need people on the rigs out in the gulf, which is where our people go. I do believe they shut certain rigs down until the demand goes up.

Right now someone in my family is sitting at home until further notice, because of the low demand in the oil field right now. He will be put back to work but for now he is laid off.

I may be wrong, but that is how I always understood how it works.

This article in the Economist "Cheaper Oil: Winners And Losers" (http://www.economist.com/news/international/21627642-america-and-its-friends-benefit-falling-oil-prices-its-most-strident-critics) is a pretty good look at the global nature of this round of shifting oil prices and addresses some of the region specific outcomes of the current situation. Bear in mind it is about seven weeks old, but the underpinnings are still accurate. And there are charts! :)

Here is a short excerpt on the effects in America and some of the extraction methods:

"The impact on America will be mixed because the country is simultaneously the world’s largest consumer, importer and producer of oil. On balance cheaper oil will help, but not as much as it used to. Analysts at Goldman Sachs reckon that cheaper oil and lower interest rates should add about 0.1 percentage points to growth in 2015. But that will be more than offset by a stronger dollar, slower global growth and weaker stockmarkets.

Extracting oil from shale is expensive. So when the oil price drops, America is one of the places most likely to pull back (Arctic and Canadian tar-sands producers are even more vulnerable). According to Michael Cohen of Barclays, a bank, a $20 drop in the world oil price reduces American producers’ earnings before interest by 20%, and only four-fifths of shale reserves are economic to extract using current technology with Brent around $85. How quickly production will fall as a result, though, is unclear, since producers’ costs vary and some have locked in prices via hedging. The impact will also vary by region. “If I’m in California, it’s pretty clear-cut that this is a good-news story,” says Michael Levi of the Council on Foreign Relations, a think-tank. “If I were in North Dakota [the biggest shale-oil state], I would be a lot more nervous.”

America is a net importer, so lower prices mean Americans get to keep more of their money and spend it at home. But the stimulative impact is less than it used to be, since imports are becoming less important, and oil is shrinking as a share of the economy."

There's also the fact that the Russian economy is basically folding in on itself due their (Putin's) reliance on the earlier high price profits to escape the effects of sanctions. Here's an article from Al Jazeera: Russian rouble in 'catastrophic decline' (http://www.aljazeera.com/news/europe/2014/12/russian-rouble-catastrophic-decline-2014121784047177915.html)

Oh yeah, right now I've got $2.29 gal. :)

According to this dee, they are actually drilling MORE which is why the prices are down. I'm sorry someone in your family isn't working.

today here in dallas i paid 1.99 for it. i drove by the station this morning and it was 2.12.

i heard an interview with boone pickens that the "problem" with falling gas prices is that there is MORE oil then demand and that we need to STOP producing it so that prices will raise.

im glad i was sitting down cause i would have fell down. I think we should be more oil/gas independent, but i think we should be more independent and STOP trying to tell the world that our way is better then anyone else. Just my .02 worth

I agree with the desire for oil independence. I think one unintended side effect though is that this will hurt the demand for more renewables. Hard to figure out a balancing point. :(

Oil Falls to 5-Year Low, and Energy Companies Start to Retrench

By CLIFFORD KRAUSS DEC. 8, 2014

HOUSTON — The price of crude oil continued to collapse on Monday, plunging to a five-year low, as oil giants began to scale back their drilling ambitions and pare the ranks of their workers.

On the same day that the American oil benchmark traded around $63 a barrel, down more than 4 percent, ConocoPhillips announced it would cut investment spending in 2015 by 20 percent, the biggest sign yet that major oil companies are contracting.

The announcement came on the heels of BP’s notice that it would cut middle management and other jobs in the months ahead.

Both moves suggested that the 40 percent drop in oil prices since July had spread pain beyond small exploration companies that were highly leveraged and most vulnerable to oil price swings.

“We are setting our 2015 capital budget at a level that we believe is prudent given the current environment,” said Ryan Lance, ConocoPhillips’s chairman and chief executive.

But even with the sharp cut in investments, the company projected that its oil and gas production would grow 3 percent next year because of recent start-ups of major projects in Canada, Europe and Asia, as well as increasingly productive wells being drilled in the Eagle Ford and Bakken shale fields of Texas and North Dakota.

US personal finance

Six reasons why the crash in oil prices is nothing to worry about
Oil prices are falling! Oil prices are falling! But don’t run into that bunker just yet, writes Suzanne McGee

Oil prices are plummeting. The US price for a barrel of crude has fallen to less than $78 a barrel, the lowest level in years. That comes hard on the heels of a summer-long 25% dip in prices that pushed gas at the pump below $3 a gallon – the lowest level since 2010.

It’s not a real crash: the world doesn’t really need more oil. Much of the drop is Saudi Arabia’s latest pricing shenanigans in negotiating with Opec.

A crash in oil prices looks dire. But this may make less difference than you might imagine to your day-to-day finances.

There is one exception: gasoline. Refined from crude oil, the price of gas tends to move in sync with oil. There are regional variables – is there enough refining capacity? What are the local fuel emission regulations? – that can alter those dynamics, and there’s usually a lag before crude oil price declines start showing up at the pump.

Cheaper gas could relieve some of the pressure on our beleaguered household incomes, just in time for the holiday season. And anything that spells relief on the cost front for the 95% of us who have struggled throughout the “recovery” would be welcome news, indeed. The retailers wouldn’t mind a bit, either, given their problems making money from the cash-strapped middle class.

There’s even an argument that lower gas prices at the pump could act as a kind of mini-economic stimulus.

The theory may be sound, but I’m wary of glib suggestions that cheap oil is a panacea. Betting one’s future financial wellbeing, or that of an economy, on a volatile commodity price, seems like a less-than-compelling idea. Especially since, right off the top of my head, I can see several ways in which cheap oil isn’t going to give your personal bottom line a boost.

I'm not sure whom you are referring to besides me, but if it's Dee, she's in Louisiana and she's talking about drilling off-shore in the ocean. I'm talking about drilling ON LAND. That's probably why there is a difference in people working and not working, as they are drilling more on LAND from what my cousins have told me and from what my neighbor's son in law has stated about being in S. Saudi petroleum minister tells Arab summit there’s no ‘conspiracy’ behind drop in oil prices

Dec 21, 2014 Aya Batrawy, The Associated Press

ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates – Saudi Arabia’s oil chief on Sunday dismissed allegations that his kingdom conspired to bring down oil prices in order to harm other countries and told a summit of Arab energy leaders that he was confident the market would stabilize.

The kingdom, which is dependent on oil revenues, is able to weather lower oil prices due to large reserves built up over the years. Non-OPEC member Russia and other nations like Iraq, Iran and Venezuela need prices substantially above present levels to meet budget goals and want to drive prices up.

Saudi Arabia maintains it is opposed to cutting production because of fears its market share could erode.

“The best thing for everybody is to let the most efficient produce,” Saudi Petroleum Minister Ali Naimi said in the United Arab Emirates capital of Abu Dhabi. He was addressing the Arab Energy Conference, a gathering held every four years.

The price of U.S. crude has dipped below $60 a barrel, its lowest in five years. Naimi said he was certain that the oil market would recover with the improvement of the global economy.

An OPEC meeting last month failed to agree on production cuts, mainly because of Saudi opposition to curb its own exports. OPEC controls about 40 per cent of the world oil market and Saudi Arabia is the cartel’s largest producer.

Naimi said that “a lack of co-operation by non-OPEC production nations, along with the spread of misinformation and speculator’s greed” have contributed to the drop in prices.

Some market speculators have suggested the kingdom is forcing lower prices to damage the economies of nations such as Russia and the Shiite powerhouse Iran, staunch backers of Syrian President Bashar Assad. Saudi Arabia backs the mainly Sunni rebels fighting to topple Assad.

Earlier this month, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said the sharp fall in global oil prices was the result of “treachery,” a remark interpreted as a reference to Saudi Arabia.

“I want to say from this podium that talk about a Saudi conspiracy has no basis of accuracy at all and points to a misunderstanding,” Naimi said.

It feels so wonderful to be getting the same gas mileage reimbursement (and we've been promised it won't go down). My mileage check every week is like an extra pay check now. I'm loving this. Hopefully, it will continue!!!!!!

Gas prices have recently risen a few cents over the last few days.
I recently paid 1.81 instead of just a few days ago it was 1.75, I've seen it as high as 1.99 in smaller towns on a trip I just took. I'm happy about it because it no longer costs me 45 bucks to fillup my truck , it's more like 25 so I'm saving money at these prices . :)

Gas prices have risen by a few cents here on the west coast of Florida in the last few days too. Where I fill up at, the price is now $1.99 per gallon, but I use fuel perks and will get .65 off per gallon tomorrow when I fill up the tank. My one ton is a thirsty girl, but I can do $1.34 a gallon with a big smile on my face.

I just paid $1.12 per litre ...down from $1.58 per litre last Winter. . BTW.. there are approx. 4 litres per gallon ( roughly). Americans likely pay less for gasoline than anyone on the planet and waste more of it than anyone else too. I think that nothing would make some Americans complain less than travelling out into the world more to see how other people live and try to survive. No offense btw. cause lots of Americans are plenty aware and do what they can.

$2.49/gallon half a mile from me and $2.69/gallon another mile and change down the road. Another 2 miles in the other direction and it's $2.65/gallon.

Distance doesn't mean anything, Tru. Gas stations will charge as much as they can and as much as people will pay. Two miles down the road has a very different type of neighborhood than block A or block B. If the station is in a really good location, they can really push the prices up there too.

I have two stations that are exactly across the street from one another. One charges more than the other all of the time. Why? Because even though the other one is cheaper and full service for no additional charge, it's a pain in the but to get in out and of that lot.

I like the station. It's a lil ole Italian guy that plays opera over the loudspeaker. It's just a pain to get in and out of. It's close to a major intersection and I go the opposite direction so it makes for some hold your breath moments and barreling out into traffic with the slightest gap.

I won't do it in my car unless I'm going north on that road, but I like to use it when I have the cargo truck from work. People tend to get out of my way more when they know they can be crushed like an ant. :cheesy:
