I have a friend with a problem.

"I have a laptop that wont even boot. numberlock button flashes then the power light goes out"

Do you have any thoughts?

Also my own laptop did something weird today. I turned it off last night and it installed an update.

When I booted up this morning, it told me it could not find the profile. Then it loaded up into a new profile.

I logged off as that user and my normal profile was there then.

Thoughts on that one?

Arwen:

For the laptop that won't power off: try removing the battery and remove the power supply connect, wait 3 min, leave the battery out and then connect via power supply to see if it will boot up. What kind of laptop is this?

For your profile: it may be nothing other than a hiccup but definitely watch it for a little bit.

Possibly. How long has he had this laptop and battery combo? Rechargeable batteries do a finite life to them (usually 2-3 years) and cost about $50-200 to replace. The Rechargeable Battery industry does have a recycling program in place (check at Radio Shack to see if they have a box) where you can drop off batteries (particularly NiCads) if that is the culprit.

I have an HP Pavilion, less than 6 months old. My parents don't have high speed internet so when I try to get online there I have to use dialup. It's worked fine in the past, but recently it won't connect. I log on to AOL and can hear the dial tone. I can hear my pc dialing in but it will not connect. Could it be a modem problem or maybe a side effect of a virus? I even uninstalled AOL and reinstalled a newer version, and downloaded new drivers. Same problem.

Do you mean when replying? As for seeing the code, you may need to change the editor being used. Which browser is it? Safari or Firefox?

I don't understand what you mean by this. Do you mean what the backarrow would do (move the cursor) or did you mean something different?

Ah..

Yes, use Firefox. Safari sometimes doesn't render all HTML properly.

And an extended keyboard might be the answer. You can get a USB external or re-learn life without. I never used it before so I don't miss it (I do miss the page down buttons).

Sorry. I missed your question.

I'm gonna guess that you're using OS X (10.4 or 10.5 or 10.6)

Uh.. no need for defrag on the Mac. The file system is different than others and does, by it's own behaviour, a mechanism to defrag.

Does that help.

I'm a long time mac user, and so the delete (only) button seems normal to me. You'll get used to it - just chant backspace when you use it.

Since the advent of Firefox I've effectively ceased using Safari at all (except on the rare occasion when some bizarre glitch requires a different browser).

Hi Linus!

Yesterday I came home to find our home page inaccessible and a yahoo wizard open asking me what text message we had received. There were multiple options, all related to changing my password. Closing out of the window did no good; I couldn't access the home page through the button on the navbar no matter what because the wizard kept popping back up. I could, however, access any other web page in any usual way.

Um, do I need to say we hadn't received any text messages at all? Or did you already know that?

Anyhow, we signed out of yahoo, closed down the browser, and ran Housecall. It found six items, all something to do with "root kits" from what Gryph told me; and it says it fixed them.

The %^$# yahoo wizard is still keeping us from using the homepage button. We can go in from a different link, but we don't know how to get this thing off our computer. Am I right in assuming that if I use the wizard, it will still send our password out to whomever hacked us in the first place despite our having run Housecall?

I guess Firefox has gotten popular enough to draw the attention of hackers now. :( It's really annoying.

If someone installed a keylogger (a small program that records all your keystrokes) your password to sites is probably the least of your worries. Root kits are never fun but it does sound like it's something more serious. You have a tool bar that you use, like a Yahoo bar or something? Do you remember which one you installed?

Hi Linus, thanks for the quick response!

The home page button is the standard one on Firefox, next to the address bar.

The other two toolbars on the browser are the bookmarks toolbar and the yahoo toolbar, but they don't seem to be affected; the only time this happens is when we click the home button on the Firefox tool bar--if we use a different link to get to the homepage, the wizard doesn't open at all.

Our homepage is linked to our ISP, which is att.net. Gryph's email is yahoo, but that doesn't seem to be affected at all.

I don't think this hacker is after website passwords; I think they're after our ISP password. Does that make sense?

The computer was totally clean according to Housecall on Tuesday; then yesterday after this happened we had the 6 root kits. I haven't run Housecall today; I have to close everything down for over an hour to run it, and I thought I should talk to you first.

It does make that they are after your ISP password. Go to the preferences of your browser and double check as to what is set for the homepage.

It sounds like there is something hijacking the connection. Quite often these "hijacks" are easy to pick up when the computer is in safe mode because they aren't running at that time.

So just do the scan and see what, if anything is caught.

When I restarted, logged back in to the internet, and opened firefox, yahoo was redirected to the same edit link but this time the wizard did not open; I had a blank page with a "Done" message at the bottom. We'll sign in again tomorrow but for now it's past bedtime.

If you've followed the steps that AOL lists, the next option would be to put a call in to them to see if they have other phone numbers you can call. It sounds like either their phone bank is overloaded or not responding.

Two questions, please *dropping thirty cents in tip jar*

Question 1
Mister has an old Dell laptop. It's used for web surfing and pretty much nothing else. It keeps getting slower and sllloooowwwweeerrrrr, even though there's practically nothing on it. Why do computers get slower as they get older? I know that it's the computer and not the DSL because I have two other computers on the same network, one for home and one for work, that run screaming circles around his laptop when it comes to internet response time.

Question 2
I want to get Mister a new laptop. What is the correlation between processor and net surfing speed? I'm wondering if I need to go over my budget for an Intel Core 2, or if a cheaper Intel processor give the same result. I've been looking at the Toshiba Satellites; they all seem to have good reviews and there are plenty of low price models available with the cheaper Intel processors. We might occassionally hook it up to the HDTV to watch stuff, so an HDMI port would be a nice bonus. I know that a netbook would probably meet his needs, but we're both too old for 10 inch screens.

Oh, wait, third question *tosses in another 15 cents*

TigerDirect has this (http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/searchtools/item-Details.asp?EdpNo=5543238&sku=M455-15603) MSI notebook on sale this weekend for $419. It has the Intel Celeron T3100 and an HDMI port, so it seems to fill the bill. Do you know anything about MSI Computers?

There are a variety of reasons for this:

- newer computers have faster CPUs, better motherboard designs, bus speeds (the path used between CPU and memory, and CPU and other parts), amount of memory, speed of hard drive, etc.. Depending on the years apart from old to new will show significant speed differences.

- as you fill up the hard drive, less space is available for the swap file and it means more wait time while the system swaps out pages if it doesn't have enough memory.

- too much network traffic can overload the CPU, causing it to queue up traffic and slow the response down in general

- malware/spyware/viruses. The more that exist, the slower the system can get. Many of these are poorly written and thus, cause the system to slow down.

Faster processor means more network packets translated faster. And pages interpreted/render faster. And pictures rendered faster. And new OS to do all that faster. And... (I think you get the picture).

While you don't need the ultimate (I believe most of the newer systems are coming with quad cores) a dual core Intel cheap (NOT celeron please) would be sufficient for both short term and long term (I always look at long term being 3-5 years, at least, as a lifetime for a good system).

Toshiba Satellites have gotten a better and better rap over the years.

Netbooks are interesting but smaller keyboard and screen can be a challenge. For a couple of hundred more you can get a decent laptop. One of the things you should consider is support plan. If you buy from a manufacturer, what kind of phone support do you get? Do you get any? (and that's a question about the laptop listed below).

Oh, wait, third question *tosses in another 15 cents*

It has the Intel Celeron T3100 and an HDMI port, so it seems to fill the bill. Do you know anything about MSI Computers? As I said, I personally prefer to stay away from celerons. I know they designed them for laptops but I find that a laptop with a celeron doesn't last as long as one with a full Intel Pentium or Intel Core CPU. I've never used MSI so I can't say it's good or bad but reviews on Epinion.com and apparently on TigerDirect suggest that it's good. To me, it's an unknown and I tend to stick with brand names (yes, I know I pay more but it's a known quantity to me so saves on a step).

Hello, Linus! *pours lotsa coins into tip jar*

I have a weird problem that I cannot figure out how to solve; my computer screen keeps changing colors on me. Right now it's yellow; all the colors are grayed out, and everything which should be bright white is a strange grayed out greenish yellow. After a few minutes, it will switch to another color. I cannot find the setting to turn this weirdness off. Right now, I notice it's slowly leaving yellow and going more green. The smilies are all pink instead of bright yellow...

I'm running Windows 7, IE--it does affect the whole computer, not just the browser. It even affects the games.

Sure hope you know where to look to change this setting; calibrating the colors and changing themes does nothing to affect it.

Thanks!

Is this a laptop or a desktop?

If it's a desktop, check the connections at the back of the computer and see if the monitor cable is loose.

If that doesn't work, ensure the video card is set in place. This will mean turning off the computer, opening the case and carefully ensuring the card is fully seated. Check the back where the connection is and ensure that none of the pins are bent.

If you have a 2nd monitor, attach that and see if it results in the same behaviour.

If these suggestions don't work or it's a laptop, please take it to a Geek Squad location. It's possible that something happened to the card.

In the arcade, WOW Connect isn't loading

Now, while I understand this isn't necessarily a big deal...but...um...someone took my high score from me, and I'm on a mission to get it back

If it's just a wee glitch, is it possible to fix it?

Thanks,

Hmmmm, that is weird. It hasn't worked for me since Thursday night (?...might be Friday night, can't remember)

I'll check again...maybe your powers are just that strong that you just had to show it who's boss, and now it will work for me

Or maybe it's a conspiracy by Oopster to keep the high score!

You cannot linked to pictures on your computer. You'd have to upload them to a site and link to there. Flickr offers free accounts for you to upload pictures to and then you can link to them there.

Somehow the left mouse button came loose and pushed down into the laptop. :| I am using a usb mouse because I cant bear to give up my laptop for 4 weeks for Best Buy's warrenty. Is this something easily fixed myself? Or should I just continue to use the usb mouse? There is nothing else wrong with my laptop and I no longer have a desktop :deepthoughts: decisions...decisions.. decisions...

4 weeks?? That seems awfully long time. Something like this is a 30 min job.

By pushed-down, do you mean it's under the casing? If so, this may or may not be something you can resolve. Laptops tend to be a little more of a challenge. I'd say that using some tape to cover the hole and continue using the USB mouse should be fine.

Yes that is exactly what has happened.. First it was loose on the far left side.. now it is pushed under the case... So I agree with you about the tape.. Thats what I thought about doing.. Thanks!!

The 4 week thing... its just because they dont do that kind of thing inhouse.. So unless something else goes wrong that will be my plan. Thanks again...

I don't know if this is the right question to ask in the right place...
if not, do ignore me...I wish I could often, ignore myself that is!

I am working on two applications for shows...one I can't seem to do at all dure to the pictures not being the right size (although SF offered to try and help me out so I emailed her one to see what we can see)

my question is about the other one for which I have to burn a CD...I managed to get the pictures onto the CD, though I have not burned it yet...will the titles I put on the CD, under the icon for the pictures, show up on the screen when they are viewed?...and, in what order will the pictures show up?...how can I get them to view in the order I want?

if those are questions I can ask here, thanks...I hope they made sense...I tend to talk too much, and especially when I'm in crazy-nina space, into which I entered many hours ago!

thanks in advance...

Applications? Do you mean something you are submitting or programs? If you need help with resizing I can help with that if SF gets too busy.

You could do a PowerPoint presentation that is just the images. There are also picture viewing programs (like Irfan (http://www.tucows.com/preview/194967)) that can do "Slideshows" in the order you want. Depending on what program you use the names may or may not be showing.

I just need to, somehow, send a CD with 5 pictures of my bags...I just thought that the 'name' of the bag could somehow be seen, like under the picture...but, it's not a big deal...the order is more important, but I think I will just burn one and see what order it shows up in, then I can make yet another disk with the pictures as I want them to be shown...ha!! at least I hope I can...

as for resizing them, I don't know that it can be done in this life time...I am not, as you might have gathered, a computer-guy (sic)... :)

Uh... HUH? Can you put this into a little more context? What are you referring to?

See, I thought I WAS speaking your language, sorry :)

Long story shortish...I was unable to connect to the internet, called the service provider, there wasn't an issue with their service or their equipment, they asked me to provide them with my IP address and when I did, they informed me that my original IP address was no longer valid, that the original IP address had "disappeared" and was replaced with an IP address that begins with two digits instead of three? so I would need to call the manufacturer of the computer for more information.

Off to google more. I thank you, Liz thanks you more!

Linus
09-19-2010, 09:58 PM
Let me guess. It started with 10. something? If that is the case there is a special range of ip addresses that are reserved as "private addresses". These are not meant to be routed on the Internet. Think of it like a gated community that doesn't receive direct mail. You have to have a post office box to get your mail.

In this case if you cannot get out on to the Internet the router (the thing connected to your modem, which is connected directly to the Internet) is likely the problem. Is thisma wired or wireless connection?

It sounds like the fonts may have changed. This can be resolved by going to View --> Zoom and then choosing Zoom out or Zoom Text Only and then choosing Zoom In or Zoom out.

For the last few weeks (maybe longer, who knows), my hard drive occasionally makes the noise like it's trying to read a disk, only it's empty. It'll do it once or twice then stop. (win xp)

It does it randomly; i can be reading threads here, in my email, or playing solitaire.

Any thoughts?

Thanks so much!!

Do you mean Floppy Drive? If not, then I do not quite understand what you mean since reading the hard drive would indicate that there is a hard drive to read.

Now, if it is the floppy drive, did you recently access a document from a floppy disk? Because if you did, XP tries to keep a cache of recently accessed documents and is probably trying to see if it can find it. You can try the following to see if that stops it.

Go to Start --> control panel --> taskbar AND Go to start menu/[start menu]/[customize]/[advanced]

and at the very bottom click on the
[CLEAR LIST] button

I'm looking into connecting both my computer towers to one monitor. I have researched this and the best answer *I* see is the KVM switch.

Do you have any suggestions, or ideas?

Linus
10-29-2010, 12:26 PM
There's a whole variety of KVM switches out there. A lot will depend on the kind of video/monitor connections you have (analog, DVI, etc.).

You can find a selection here: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/campaigns/campaigntemplate.asp?CampaignID=778&srkey=kvm

Ok, possibly a stupid question here... I got a Verizon Mifi router that connects upto 5 computers wirelessly. Damon's pc doesnt have a built in wireless system but his desktop has a Linksys 4rt54g5(or S not sure) that is plugged into his computer in the antenna slot. Its a black plastic antenna looking thing (dont ya just love my ability to describe it? scratches my head).

There is no router just the antenna. I am assuming he needs the router as well right? Or is just the antenna piece possibly all he needs? He can not detect the wireless Verizon Mifi router and everything I see online has a router with it. So I am thinking he needs the router itself as well. Hes had it for years so not sure if he is missing part of it.

Thanks in advance!

Becca

Linus

Try opening it with Notepad or use vi. Copy the file first (to ensure the original is kept safe), change the copy's extension to .txt and use a plain text editor (not word or other more robust ones) to open it. Either at the top or bottom, it should indicate the encryption type.

Now, when I logged into email A today, there's links to BFP and some of the threads here, but instead of saying Butch Femme Planet on the left like my emails in email B do, it lists the poster's Facebook name.

I think I was added to a FB group by someone here without my permission, but I'll deal with that later. That might explain one of the threads that is coming up, but another one is not linked to FB at all.

I don't understand why there's bleeding from one email to the next or why people's names are coming up instead of BFP, especially since I'm not in a group that is linked to both places. I especially don't like the idea of MY name coming up when I post in that particular thread, which I will eventually do, since it's a regular thread for me.

I'm not sure if I'm explaining it clear enough, but I know you'll let me know if we're on the same page. :)

Thanks in advance!

Gemme - The emails you are receiving are replies to a Facebook group which was created by a member here. The Facebook group features a topic that we have here and when people reply to that, it is sending a response to your inbox.
I was also added to that group.

I was doing some testing in the back end that shouldnt have caused any slowness but we might need to reboot the server.

Hi Linus,

I have a question regarding the small photo's we put up on here on our profile. Why is it some ppl's pictures are very clear and crisp.. while some are blurry. For me.. I've tried making the smaller and still I get nothing or when I do make them small they seem so far away so you can't see the picture...

Any Idea's for me to fix the Blurrrrrrrrrrrs??? lol

Blurring in the profile picture indicates that it was originally smaller and made bigger. Size isn't just L x W but also number of pixels per inch. The more pixels, the sharper the image. It makes it a larger file as well.

So the trick is to keep the pixel count high while keeping the size at an appropriate level.

Ok I have a Question regarding the Galleries....

Is there a way I can move pictures from my gallery to an "album" in the Gallery? I added pictures to my gallery but want to move them into an "Album" I don't see any way to do this but to "delete" them and start over.... Or am I wrong?

Edit the picture and you should have the option to choose where you want the picture to go.

Can you recommend a decent wireless router?

I've been looking at them for the last couple weeks but I have no clue what I should be looking for; what's the difference between a N-router and a G-router and do I need to know that? :|

Linus

N-Routers and cards provide for a greater distance and speed range compared to the older G-Routers and cards. Depending on how old your system is an N-Router may be the best to go with.

As for manufacturers, I tend to stick with the name brands specifically NetGear. Linksys bought out Cisco but their smaller routers don't seem to perform as well as the enterprise equivalents that Cisco is known for. What's your budget for this?

NB: answers may be delayed since I'm in China right now and it's a full half day ahead of everyone else.

If I wanted to post the following YouTube: h.ttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=teMlv3ripSM

I would just take the part after the = sign and put it between the YouTube tags like so (without the space):

Let me know if that helps.

Woooo Hooooo finally I can post proper utoob links. Thanks Linus.

I have 2 systems, a desktop that is about 4 years old. It's a dual core, roughly 4 ghz cpu (2 per core) with 4 gigs of RAM. I have a laptop that's just a couple weeks old., it's a quad core 2.2 ghz, also 4 gigs of memory.

As far as budget goes, I'd like to retain my limbs but I'd rather pay for quality. I can probably swing $100-$150 right now, anything more and I'd have to save for a few more weeks.

Edited to say nevermind. I cleared the cookies and tried to thank again with no success and then got distracted by the pest guy and then I accidentally....maybe....kicked Bessie and now I seem to be able to thank just fine.

I'm going to look into this. I hadn't heard about them shutting down the DNS for July. What I've read is that it seems specific to Australians and I'm not sure why the FBI, a US police force for internal US issues, would do that to Australia specifically. Granted that the DNS servers are world wide (the root or top-most level ones are), the news reports I found seemed to indicate it would be directed at Australia specifically.

There may be some legitimacy to this story. After a bit of searching, I found this on the FBI's website: http://www.fbi.gov/news/stories/2011/november/malware_110911/malware_110911

They do have a link you can use to determine if you are infected or not. I'd suggest reading this: http://www.fbi.gov/news/stories/2011/november/malware_110911/DNS-changer-malware.pdf and near the bottom they recommend some steps you can do to check if you are infected or not.

Hi there,

It's unlikely that you need a new laptop. I would suggest, however, that you probably need a very solid system check. This can be done by the likes of the Geek Squad at Best Buy or even a local computer store (likely to be cheaper than the Geek Squad).

The other option to do is to reformat it back to factory default (Dell's usually have a recovery section on the hard drive). This is another alternative but you should ensure that all critical data is backed up and you keep necessary info for applications (e.g., license codes) somewhere safe so you can restore those applications.

What version of Java is it?

It's the version the chat room says I need to download. I recently upgraded my computer and it didn't have Java on it, so when I clicked the link for chat the window showed to download the plugin which is Java 7 with Update 10. The download is the same on the Java website.
I have windows 7 now on my computer, if that helps you.

Any thoughts on this issue? I could use your help.

Ok. My thoughts on the issue right now is that I don't have enough info which is why I'm asking these questions. So.. more questions:

1. Do you still get the same error?
2. Where are you trying to access chat from (front page or from within the forum area)?
3. Did you try another browser like I had asked earlier as I still suspect that Firefox didn't "register" the java properly? (e.g., Chrome, IE)
4. Do you have anti-virus in place that does an active scan of websites while you visit (and thus potentially preventing java from running).

I only get this error when I use Mozilla Firefox, chat works using IE.
I checked the plugin on Mozilla to make sure it was enabled, it is. I disabled and then enabled it again, still don't work for chat. I tried turning off all other plugins on Mozilla and still don't work for chat. It's something to do with Mozilla Firefox not recognizing Java or blocking it. I hope no one else is having issues with this crap. Your profound brain of technology can help find the answer, I am at a loss. I even tried turning off my antilogger, antivirus, etc and it still won't work with Mozilla. I guess until maybe you can come up with an answer, If I want to use chat, I'll just have to use internet explorer.

PS. I seen some articles about not using the older version of Java because they were malicious stuff involved with being able to get into your computer and do stuff to it and Mozilla is blocking them so you can't use the older versions. But that didn't say it was blocking the newest version that I have.
I'm lost on this one Linus. I do appreciate your assistance trying to figure this crap out.

My honey was frustrated with the whole thing and didn't ask any questions so I am hoping you can explain to me why a setting that had been okay for several years was now not okay. And what is Proxy and how does No Proxy affect us?

So it sounds like there may be an issue here. First, let's explain what a proxy is.

A proxy is a special kind of computer that acts on behalf of another computer. The term comes from the voting reference (voting by proxy) where someone can have a friend or family member vote on their behalf at things like stock meetings, political meetings, etc.

Usually we use computer proxies for one of two reasons. The first is to surf anonymously. For example, if you visit here, we (the admins) can see what IP address you are accessing the site from and a rough idea where you are (and to be clear, we don't monitor this simply because it's too much time and not something we do unless we have an issue with some or suspect someone of being a spammer).

If you were to access the site through a proxy, every time you visit a page you "ask" the proxy to go to the page. The proxy goes to the page, gets the page information (e.g., text, pictures, etc.) and then turns around sends it back to you. A proxy can be anywhere in the world. So, for example, if I was visiting the website from my home but using a proxy in Tokyo, it would show up as if I was in Tokyo and not Los Angeles.

Hopefully that helps.

Now, on why it changed. I have a question: does the router have wifi on it? And if it does, do you have a password on the wifi and have you changed the default administrator password? Most of the time these routers come with a default admin password and it's very possible that someone could have gotten into the router and changed those settings to use your router to surf.

It is EXTREMELY important to change the password on the router to something that is difficult and not related to anything you like (e.g., movies, tv shows, celebrities) or covet (e.g., kids, spouse, friends, family, furrkids). The password should NOT be less than 12 characters, have both lower and upper case, numbers and special characters (e.g., !@#$%^&*....)

Yes, it is on WiFi and yes, there is a password assigned by the internet provider. It is at least 15 characters long and has never been changed. Heck, I don't even know how to change it. I don't believe it has upper and lower case, or special characters.

If someone had changed the router password, how would I have been able to access the internet on my laptop and tablet? How would changing to No Proxy have allowed me internet access?

Thank you for the Proxy explanation. I don't think I need to be able to use a proxy but with NSA and such.....:|

The password I'm referring to is the administrator password, not the wifi one. I suspect that the router is at 192.168.1.1 and they usually have a default password. (something like admin/password) unless the ISP changed it.

And it's possible that someone changed it for their own purposes or accidentally selected the wrong option. If the admin password was never changed it's possible.

Oh.. and a proxy won't prevent the NSA from looking at your stuff. The only way to ensure that they don't see your stuff is to not surf the web or be online.

No, I do not currently use an admin password. I will set one up though.

I didn't get online last night and sometime between 7:30am yesterday and 6am this morning I got both the expriration notice and the notice of the paypal pull. It wasn't even 24 hours in between. It feels like we used to have more time before. Can that be adjusted?

I know it's been mentioned before (not sure if it was here or not, though), but it would be nice to have more than a handful of hours between the 'your subscription is expiring' notice and the paypal pull.

I didn't get online last night and sometime between 7:30am yesterday and 6am this morning I got both the expriration notice and the notice of the paypal pull. It wasn't even 24 hours in between. It feels like we used to have more time before. Can that be adjusted?

I have tried to get to chat from both home page buttons but cannot get it working with Google Chrome. It was working fine yesterday.
I am using Windows 7 pro and google chrome.
I"ve tried clearing out my cookies and cache, keep getting the same Error Message on the webpage that opens for chat on my home computer, as it opens a different window to chat on....here is what it says:

Oops! Google Chrome could not connect to host7110.123flashchat.com

It's not you. It's our chat provider. They appear to be down. Hopefully they will be back soon. Try in an hour or so.
