Hey JDeere.I have 2 cds in my van that I can't live without..Buck Owens 21 #1 hits and The Very Best of Dwight Yoakam. That's about all the country music I listen to these days even though country music has been a part of my life since the cradle. My parents raised me on this stuff.
umm,no gossip to tell..maybe later :eatinghersheybar:

I too was raised on country music. I mainly listen to 1970's to early 2000's country. Some of the stuff today is not what I consider country.

I like country music, but I like the old-school kind. My all-time favorite is Hank Williams Sr. He wrote so many great songs (Hey Good Lookin'; I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry; Cold, Cold, Heart; Honky Tonk Blues). Really, I could listen to him and his songs all day long and not get bored.
I also like Minnie Pearl, Patsy Cline, Loretta Lynn and those bad-ass highway men (Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, and Kris Kristofferson).
Thanks for asking, JD :)

I'm a so Cali native and country was not even my playlist. (kroq fan, lol) However I was exposed when I was a tag along to a Garth Brooks concert. I'm not a twang fan at all, but I do love some Dwight Yoakum twang, it's eye rolling back in my head good.:)
I agree with some of the new country crossing the line into pop. But...I love Eric Church and his rock and roll guitar! I've seen, Alan Jackson, Tim McGraw, Pat Green, local bands, Randy Rogers, Keith Urban and love the sound of bluesy guitar of Seth Green. Someday I would love to see Carrie Underwood.
The song writing of country can bring goosebumps or a tear to my eye...right now, this is my fav...

I love country music. Some of the all time most well written songs are written by current or former country music stars. Much of what is on the radio especially the last few years is no where remotely country.
Wharever that is that Florida Georgia Line sings is not country and it all sounds the same. There is some dude they keep playing lately who talks threw every song, like he is talking to some chic in a bar. He isn't country either.
I love Hank Sr and Jr, but boy howdy could Sr write a song or what. Willie, Kris, Dolly and Loretta are awesome song writers, as well as Allen Jackson, Kellie Pickler, Randy Owens, JP Pennington and many others.
My current favorite well written song is Girl Crush. Anyone male or female who has ever been dumped for someone else, can relate to this song and probably has felt the emotions in it. I'm not even sure who wrote it.
I have an eclectic taste in music.
Some really great "older crooners"....
George Jones, Merle Haggard, Roy Orbison, Johnny Cash, Pam Tillis, Tammy Wynette, Loretta Lynn, Little Jimmy Dickens, Charley Pride....(yes, I AM dating myself, aren't I....lol....

I think that barrier between pop music and country music was crossed by the likes of Kenny Rogers and Crystal Gayle and Ronnie Milsap. There were some sick moments in the late 70s (and I don't mean "sick" as in "cool", the way the kids nowadays say - heh).
I have to say though - and I might get stomped for this, but okay - that Taylor Swift is one heck of a songwriter. She is very talented, and I would count her first two albums as country - very story-oriented lyrics, and with traditional country music instruments. After her first two albums, though, she really went into other genres, and in no way do I think what she's doing now has anything to do with country.
That Taylor Swift song about Romeo and Juliet makes me smile every time I hear it - I can't help it. Young love . . .

My favorite style is old 1990's. I mean Gary Allen, Garth Brooks, Allen Jackson. I've been told it's more like the old "Nashville" sound and not mixed with pop.

It is. To days country's is rap, pop mixed thanks to taylor swift, shutters. I'm so glad she is out if the country genre.
There needs to be a comeback of a lot of old school peeps maybe through re recordings, etc.

If anyone in wants to watch some old time country on T.V. I recently up graded my channels on dish and picked up two channels that are really good. One is R.F.D tv station 231,it has lots of good country music and shows...even has Porter Wagner on it. The other is station 248 called Ride, its a bit more fancy but also has lots of good things as well. I already had the horse racing station 398 and it has everything from rodeo to chuck wagon races, jumping to dressage plus plenty of how to clinics for horse folks. I wish they had the stuff when I was a kid, that was in the dark ages so I'm told told...heck they barely had black and white T.V. then.

Have to say I am not sure how a guy who hasn't sung a song that made it to the top 40 in country music manages to snag the Male Vocalist of the Year award. I have never heard of him until he won his 3 awards last night. With that said I went on a quest for his music videos and have to say I understand why he doesn't have a top 40. Very confusing.

It seems to me they are trying to court some kind of authenticity again. I don't know how truly talented musicians, as many of them are, perform the trash they do year after year. Money and attention are powerful incentives, I imagine.
Signs of the authenticity scare:
Eric Church's "Mr Misunderstood" -- esp the lyric "But you love your daddy's vinyl, old-time rock and roll -- Elvis Costello, Ray Wylie Hubbard, and think Jeff Tweedy is one bad mother"
LeeAnn Womack's nominations for an album of Americana music -- songs by Bruce Robison, Julie Miller, Neil Young, Hayes Carll, Mindy Smith, and Chris Knight.
Chris Stapleton doing so well. While he writes mainstream country songs for mainstream country artists, he is more of a roots performer himself. And that excellent duet with Justin Timberlake clearly put smiles on everyone's faces. Loved that Miranda wore a Chris Stapleton t-shirt as she picked up her award.
Rewarding the "Girl Crush" song so highly. It's not controversial by indy or pop standards, but it clearly shook up country radio some.
Kacey Musgraves -- there and doing well. I like some of her stuff a lot. I thought the performance last nigth was weird, but I am a little old to get all of what she is up to. Still, no question that she pushes the mainstream country radio envelope.
----------------------------------
There was still plenty of bro-country -- didn't Florida George Line win two awards? And the endless parade of blonde divas, including our hostess. And the typical pandering bullshit -- Brad Paisley's football thing. Still, there was less of all that and a touch of hope. There sure hasn't been much for a long long time.
Maybe it's because Americana artists are making more money, mostly from NPR listeners but still . . . . Maybe because Buddy Miller and other altcountry folks are behind the tv show Nashville. I don't know. I always thought they knew what real country music was and that it wasn't what they were playing, but that they wouldn't risk alienating their young country girl demographic to play much of it. In the past, Brad Paisley would have Willie or someone play with him during an awards show performance -- to sing along on the chorus - -but I always found those minimal acknowledgements insulting. Remember when Johnny Cash died and there was almost no recognition? I don't know. I gave up hope on mainstream country long ago. Or I thought I did.

The first time I heard "Girl Crush" I thought oh man that is such a well written song. A song that really anyone can relate to, and Karen Fairchild, whoa!
I read an article a few days ago. The author was saying that Girl Crush sounds remarkably like "It's a Heartache". I sang and hummed both of them all day at work Friday LOL. It's true they do sound very similar. He called it "borrowing" and that is a lot of borrowing, he said.
I like both songs, but thought Girl Crush was just awesome writing.
I did want to comment on a George Strait post a few days ago. He has won like 18 entertainer of the year awards. I love his music, but IMO he is not an entertainer, he's a singer. I would say that Porter Wagner, Dolly Parton, Buck Owens and Roy Clark were entertainers before the 1990s, as well as singers. Elvis was definitely an entertainer. The Grand Ole Opry encouraged and supported lots of singers to be entertainers.

I am a huge Patty Griffin fan. She's got a lot of country tunes. What a writer.
Country music is a mutt -- combination of all kinds of influences: blues, old-timey, folk, rock, R&B, jazz and pop. People criticized Chet Atkins for being too poppy and jazzy. A lot of the folks doing traditional sounding country now have absolutely no connection to the land or the culture. But they do great music. Even Doc Watson, rest in peace, started out as a rock musician. But the folk revival was going strong, and he found he could make money that way. There is no such thing as pure country music and probably hasn't been since before there were professional country musicians.

I love traditional country music. Hate the pop country thats out now days
Speaking of Canadian country, I love Blue Rodeo. It's technically country rock I suppose...

She took down the photograph
Of our wedding day
Ripped it down the middle
And threw my half away
And I got nobody to blame but me
I got nobody to blame but me
She broke all my fishing rods
Put my guns in hock
Threw my clothes out in the yard
And changed out all the locks
And I got nobody to blame but me
I got nobody to blame but me
[Chorus]
I know right where I went wrong
I know just what got her gone
Turned my life into this country song
And I got nobody to blame but me
I got nobody to blame but me
[Verse 2]
She fired up my old hot rod
Ran it in the pond
Put sugar in my Johnny
I can’t even mow my lawn
And I got nobody to blame but me
She built her a bonfire
With my old six string
Took all my good whiskey
And poured it down the drain
And I got nobody to blame but me
I got nobody to blame but me

There's an awful lot of songs, that I just love, by Waylon Jennings and The Outlaws, but his wife Jessi, her voice always took me to places, her songs just touched my heart: Like her song, "I'm Not Lisa." But I like their song " Storms Never Last."
You can see how much they love each other as they sing this ballad.
I think what I like most about country music is that so many of the artists have a certain way of talking about things in life that makes you feel like they know what you've been going through.
Anyway, hope you enjoy hearing them sing the ballad, "Storms Never Last."

A million miles from you
A million miles from nowhere
Alone, broken hearted and blue.
Memories of you
And the love you once knew
How they linger in my heart
Though we are a million, a million miles apart.
A million miles from happiness
A million miles of loneliness
The world of wilderness
Oh, how I can go on like this?
A million miles from nowhere
A million miles from you
A million miles from nowhere
Alone, broken hearted and blue.
