Mine's improved but part of it is some simple steps. I found deleting the iCloud stuff reduced battery drain considerably. Also regular full drain (once a month) helps keep the battery conditioned. If you do a quick "doubleclick" on the Home button, you can see which apps are still "running". Holding one of them down allows you to force the select app to exit from the Home "bar"

Ok I am doing this and all of my apps come up. How do I know which ones are actually running?

Thank you!

if you double click the home button the bottom bar activates. Now press one of the icons until you see round red circles with a minus on the left of each icon. Just start tapping those and it will close that app from running. It will not delete, just stop it from running in the background. You'll be amazed how many stay running long after you close them.

I found a cool app for Iphone 4. It's a Flashlight! I think its even called Flashlight and its 99 cents. I couldn't believe how powerful it was. I won;t use it all the time but it sure is nice to have when you need it. Its BRIGHT!

I finally broke down and got an ipad. I also stopped buying big clunky desktops and heavy laptops. I like the feeling of being able to move about. I might start in my bed, move to the porch, sit by the barn or by the fireplace. I'm doing everything wireless even my printer and set up an old desktop with external drive to store everything. I can easily send everything across the network. On the rare occasions I need photoshop or the like I'll go to my old desktop but most of the time I'll use pixlar right online.

Flashlight is very awesome. There are a few other apps that do the same plus emergency flashing of the light.

There is a Photoshop app (called PS Express) and a few other graphic manipulation apps (ColorSplash is my favourite along with Hipstamatic). I'm getting close to going without a laptop/desktop except for my desire to play Warcraft.

Linus, I'm having trouble getting my iPad to sync with iTunes, it simply will not do it. The darn thing gives me an unknown error 13019. Any ideas o' Master of the i World? I do have a crack in the top left face of the screen and I'm 'bout ready to just take it to the Apple Chapel.

WOW I had all of my apps running, that's nuts! How do you exit out of the app so this doesn't happen again.

I want and don't want an Ipad, tell me I don't need one.

You really don't Dee. Even when you signout of yahoo it keeps the app running in the background. I did see some battery saving apps which perhaps automate this process but to be honest I worry about cliches. I need to check it out some more.

No one really needs an ipad, per se. I don't "need" one but had a chance to get one very cheap and decided to get it. At some point, once I have help here, I'll need to travel for a new business project. At that point I'll want a 3G Ipad with more memory. I'll probably give this one to my son or Mia. lol yeah she's only one year old but she goes to down on my iphone and laptop.

Hush! There is always a need ;)

For me, I know if i could go completely to an iPad my back would be thrilled because that would mean less to haul when on the road. Much like other computing devices my adage is that if it does what you need then it is needed. If it doesn't then it's a want. I did recently get the 3G iPad 2 and gave my older iPad to K to play with. She likes that she can watch vids while on a treadmill and play Mahjogg as a way to relax after a hard day while watching tv.

It will be interesting to see where things are 25 years from now as tech changes so rapidly.

Nope. I don't really need one. My screen doesn't scratch at all and I carry my phone in my pocket.

I read somewhere about that shield ( years ago ) where ppl was havin problems with the shield. Not being able to scroll easier then without one. Also ppl complained when they took the shield off, it left marks / residue on their phone that they couldn't get off.

I don't use them. I use Zagg on mine and unlike what some of the reports mentioned by durrrrr, it's never left a residue. They use just distilled water to create the seal. It's worked perfect for mine and K removed it off my old iPad without any marks left.

My biggest challenge with the screen on the iPad/iPhone is fingerprints and that's why I got the Zagg shield. Easier to clean with no potential for scratches, spills or other stuff happening to the screen.

I'll give it to you..... here goes

You NEED an Ipad with a good photo imaging app to fuel your creativity. Your photography is very important to you and we all know that its not just about taking them but to properly display them. You NEED the ipad because it gives you the artistic creativity to move about into areas that inspire you.

I had the otterbox on mine for a long time. I admit that it has saved me, especially being on the farm. I am famous for sticking eggs in my pockets while i feed the pig and then rubbing up against something and smashing them in my pocket. I've ruined a few blackberry phones.

My Iphone is a year old now. I have special replacement insurance with a 50.00 deductible. I hate the bulk and weight of the otterbox so I decided not to use it. Its been a few months and I have no scratches. I've dropped it at least a dozen times. It hasn't met the egg test yet and I haven't dropped it into a bucket of water.

The newest iphone has a special glass that is the strongest yet. I'm not sure if they use this on ipad but I'm guessing they work hard to make the product leading edge. Especially as competition begins to surface.

One of our neighbors ran over his iphone with the Otterbox, with his TRACTOR, it survived! Syr has one but I chose the Hot Pink Bubble Gel cover.. it's spiffy. I stick eggs in my pocket too, but so far no scrambled ones. They had the otterbox with the belt clip, that works good too.

I used Zagg on my old iPhone as well. I never had any issues using the touchscreen, including scrolling, with the Zagg on it. Last week or so, I took the Zagg off just for grins and the screen looked the same way it did when I bought it. And there was no residue.

When I got the new iPhone, I bought an otterbox defender. I occasionally have issues with "the dropsies" and wanted to make sure Siri, I mean the phone, was protected. It has a screen protector built into it so I have no need for other screen protectors. And I got mine on Amazon. Their prices are generally way better than what you find on otterbox's website, depending on which one you're looking at.

I'm a huge advocate of the Otterbox Defender series. It does make the phone heavier but it also makes it a great weapon when one needs it! :cheesy:

I took my phone out of my pocket before class today and promptly dropped it on the tile floor. No problem at all. The guy sitting across from me said, "Wow! That's a big case!" It's funny how people always seem to think it's huge. I don't think it's *that* big. Yeah, it's a bit heavier and it's definitely not a slim case, but if I'm gonna keep dropping it, it's all worth it.

I bought an ipad 2 wifi and decided not to spring for 3G.
Ok I have a question for anyone in the know- if you buy a Ipad 3g you still have to purchase a separate data plan which cost 25.00 and up. If you already have a iphone you have to pay for a data package which is an additional 25.00 and up depending on your data usage. If you have an iphone 4 you can purchase data tethering for 45.00 for 4GB! This turns your Iphone into a personal hotspot where you can use any wifi device. So my question is why get a ipad 3g?

Is anyone using their iphone as a personal hotspot and if so, how is the connection?

Thanks

Easier than buying a card, but still room for improvement

Cards is a great way to send a personalized card to a friend or loved one.

It's much more convenient than driving to the store, buying a card, driving home, addressing the card, (buying and) affixing a stamp, and then dropping it in the mail. And it's probably just as cost-effective, if not more so.

The main drawback is that all of the templates in this version are landscape, which don't work as well when most of your photos are portrait. You just can't crop them the way you want to sometimes.

Also note that you will be charged sales tax for each card. It is not reflected in the app, but it does show up on the billing statement sent by email.

It's too early to know whether this will help to save the US Postal Service, but I wouldn't be surprised if there was a spike in Cards volume shortly.

Overall I like the concept and plan to use it in the future. I won't send my Christmas cards through it (you must address and send each card individually--no mail merge feature), but I will definitely use it to send birthday and anniversary cards.

There definitely needs to be an update, there are many different occasions missing, like get well soon, and many holidays. Plus I didn't see any way to make a custom card from scratch which would be nice. Add these things and the rating would definitely be a 5.

I use my Atrix for tethering, because it was simply stupid to pay $40 a month separately for a USB modem that gave me CRAP speed. The only problem with the tethering, oddly enough, is that it drops every half hour or so if i'm online after 1am. Not sure why, but it's not a huge deal. Tethering is okay but I need more bandwidth ( I go through 10GB or more every month) and will be getting a high speed line and will connect everything (ipod, ipad,pc,etc.) wirelessly when I move next month.

I bought an ipad 2 wifi and decided not to spring for 3G.

I've used it when I've been on the road and the hotel wireless was exceptionally crappy. Heck, I've watched movies and played Warcraft (not at the same time) on it. For the now and again, it's great. I never went beyond 12 midnight so I can't comment on what Butcherie was doing (although if I had to guess that's likely when backups/updates are done to the network so it'd make sense).

I got a data plan separate for my iPad. Again, it's because of the hotel and crappy wireless that I can run into when on the road. When I finally get to doing my bike trip (moved to 2013 rather than 2012), I'll likely just bring my iPad (in a waterproof case/bag) to document everything rather than a journal or laptop. I even have a solar charger for this :)

I won't send my Christmas cards through it (you must address and send each card individually--no mail merge feature), but I will definitely use it to send birthday and anniversary cards.

...More
It works well but ...

by Paul Jorritsma
There definitely needs to be an update, there are many different occasions missing, like get well soon, and many holidays. Plus I didn't see any way to make a custom card from scratch which would be nice. Add these things and the rating would definitely be a 5.

Apple just saved the postal service!

by Scott Elson
This app is the best way to send snail mail. The quality of the cards is better than anything you see at stores. You can be sure that every card you send is one of a kind!

I may take a walk on the dark side and join the apple cult. I am still deciding. I do not have an iPhone. But I really need a laptop with everything that I need to do. So I am seriously looking at the MacBook Pro.

Talk to MacBook Pro people. Tell what you enjoy most and least about yours. Even the best items have cons.

Cost and limitations on expansion are my biggest beefs.

But the speed, stability and quality stands out. Using Fusion means that anything that is "Windows only" I can handle. Additionally, the current OS (OS X) satisfies my need for both decent GUI as well as decent commandline (since it's based off of the BSD/NeXT variant). That means I can likely use a lot of the GNU/GPL software as well as off the shelf software.

The one thing I'd ask is what do you need your laptop to do? How do you use yours or how would you use it?

I have a Macbook Pro. Cost is a definite issue, but honestly I was going through HP laptops every two years, I process lots of photos and my Mac handles it just fine. I financed this one through Apple, monthly payment I was paying was worth not dealing with the frustration I was having with my HP. The financing was so easy, the finances charges were high, but it was the only way at the time. I also love that the finance people don't bother me with trying to finance something else.

My biggest plus, NO WINDOWS, the virus issues and window updates are just absent, you turn it on, and poof you are online. :)

I LOVE IT!!

Right now I don't have a laptop. I was using the one that I had through my last job. I am no longer there, so no more laptop.

I would use the laptop for things like the newsletters, a lot of photo work for the newsletters, program books, flyers, music lists (I love music), movies, editing videos, of course the creations of various docs (lectures, class materials for what I teach, spreadsheets, etc) and of course games. I would also need the Windows component because of what I need to provide to those at the church.

I found the laptops that I have used in the past to be frustrating and slow. That's why I am thinking about the MacBook Pro.

I would also need the windows side because of testing that I would be doing if I chose not to sit at the PC.

Thanks for asking.

ayup, you can. I use to use "Griffin fm transmitter"

you can get one at best buy

just tune the transmitter to a fm station that is nothing but static and there ya have it. however, once that station picks up a station, you may have to adjust it again.

Syr's car has an *auxiliary* slot on the dash that you can plug to the headphone slot on the phone, Not sure if yours has that.

Then the Mac would work well and you can use my company's product, Fusion, to run Windows in a virtual machine so you can do testing while working on the newsletter. A refurb might work well so that you can max the memory so you can do both at the same time. My current MacBook Pro is a company issued one but I'd definitely get my own that is the same or better model.

My first PC was an Apple and then a windows 3.1 AT PC. lol

I have spent tons of money on PC's because i always needed it for work, however these days I buy PC's I know that if they break down I can throw them away and buy another. I keep everything on an external drive and I have my own server, hosted, for almost 10 years at the same hosting company.

I recently bought a 500 acer pc running windows 7. It's lightweight and runs great. I stopped spending big money on PC's.

You can buy this. I have Clear Scan that plugs into my lighter jack and Iphone. The only problem with this is finding a clear station. Otherwise it works fine. i also have little cheap speaker set I plug directly into the Iphone and really blast the sound. I sometimes use this.

the only thing I didnt like about the auxiliary slot is that it does not charge my phone while in use.

at least the FM transmitter will charge the phone.

I actually have a USB port built into my truck, it basically is the same thing as the auxiliary slot, but it charges the phone will using it.

Hey guys -

For those of us "i" folks, my company just released a new app for the iPhone and iPad.

sendpostcard http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/sendpostcard/id479650305?mt=8

Send real printed postcards straight from your iPhone or iPad. Everybody loves getting personal notes in their mailbox. .99 each. What a deal. For those who live abroad, it can be a postage savings - not paying international rates.

I can give a coupon code for five free postcards if anyone is interested. Just drop me a line.

I would welcome any/all feedback on the app.

Happy postcarding!

I did receive permission from the site owner before posting the link - no conflicts of interest :)

I have several PC's, including laptops but always work on my MacBook Pro 17". The resolution is high quality and doesn't lead to eyestrain. I run Windows XP on Parallels but honestly, don't use it much at all. Apple has plenty of desktop publishing software. I use InDesign and Illustrator for any publishing, on the Mac. On my iPad, I use Numbers and Pages.

As far as "breaking" computers, it's literally impossible unless you choose to dunk it in water, regardless of the manufacturer. Well,ok, also if you open emails from people you don't know but I don't do that. I still have a very capable Gateway 2.2GHz naive Windows machine from 1999 and the only thing i've had to replace was the fan. The thing still runs and has a 300GB hard drive, plus a 500GB external.

Hackers have not yet found a way to get into Macs. That is a true statement. It will happen eventually, but at this time, they are as virus free as you're going to get.

Now....

I need a new phone. Someone sell me on the iPhone. AND what type is best. 3G? 4G? Holysh*tG?

I use it for texting mainly. Calls, of course. And I'm interested in doing more with pics. Looking info up for work and customers. Not so much on the games or having a thousand apps.

Not true. http://www.zdnet.com.au/mac-os-x-hacked-under-30-minutes-139241748.htm

All OSes have at some point or another gotten a virus, been "hacked" (I hate that term -- it's more accurate to say compromised or attacked since some "hackers", of the traditional white-hat variant, actually look to fix systems), or <insert attack vector here>.

The only way to truly ensure a secure system is to take away the biggest cause of compromise: the human being operating it.

I don't think it's worth the time of the *attackers* to attack the Mac with Viruses since they use Windows to infect the dang thing.

I LOVE my iphone 4g. I don't have the Holysh*tG one because they are still working on it.

If you are on my FB you've probably seen lots of pics i've taken with my iphone, you can enhance and crop it in camera which is pretty good, but I am not sure if the camera is that much better than any other camera phone, but the reviews say it is.

I had a hard time transitioning from a Droid to the iPhone 4 here are some of the reasons....

Texting on a iPhone is not as easy as on a Droid/Android.. another words it takes some time getting use to.

Camera.. it's not nearly as good as some of the New Androids/Droids

Graphics in my opinion is not nearly as vibrant as a Droid/Android

Apps are not as good as the Droid/Androids (there maybe less to choose from but lets face it there are PLENTY with better quality, I find there are a lot of iPhone apps with problems and I'm constantly deleting them.

Talking when making a phone call I have to change screens to talk on the phone otherwise my cheek hits the MUTE button or the SPEAKER phone .. pisses me off. This one is my biggest pet peeve.

However I do like a lot of the options it has. I'm not a hater of the iPhone but I may go back to the Droid/Androids for my next phone. I have a nother year on my contract to change my mind.

I have the 4s. It's my first smartphone so I can't speak to comparisons. I don't do games and can't type on those little screens for shit. So, Siri rocks for the clueless and voice texting can't be beat. For me, the clueless, who doesn't even really understand the world of apps, it's nice to just ask the question without knowing what app or trick to use and get an answer. I have been finding some pretty cool non-game tools as well. The camera seems pretty good, but if I want to play "photographer", I use one of my others. Works fine as a browser too. I'm know it goes well beyond the bit I've done, it seems like a solid buy to me.

Gemme, I was a late adopter of a smartphone. Felt intimidated I think.

I got my 3GS right before the 4 came out (of course).

I absolutely love it! It is so intuitive, I easily figured out how to use it. I have probably 35 apps, tons of songs, play multi-player games with folks around the world, use it for the Planet as my mini portable computer, etc.

Can't say enough good things about it. I still have 10.5 GB available so it feels wasteful to upgrade to the 4 yet but am craving a love affair with Siri (sorry honey, Siri will be my other butch at some point) and I want Face Time, too.

Yes, I love my IPhone:)

My girlfriend bought me the iPad 3 for my birthday a few weeks ago and I LOVE it. Not sure how I survived without it.. Lol. I have the 16gb LTE and the service is SO fast. I pay 30 a month through AT&T for 3gb. I use it constantly and I barely hit 1GB in 3 weeks. I wish they has a 2GB plan.

My MacBook might need an upgrade soon. I bought it in 2008, and it's still going strong but I am always looking out for new and better. I wanted a MacBook air, but with my iPad, I'm not sure I need it anymore.

My currently apple inventory is

IMac
MacBook
iPhone 4s
iPad 3

Im gonna add an Apple TV soon. I bought one for my ex before for his birthday, but it did not stream CC on Netflix so he returned it for somethig else. It was pretty nifty tho, minus that part. Now that I no longer live with anyone deaf, I don't need the CC haha. I was actually considering eliminating my cable bill and only using Apple tv for Netflix and Hulu and ordering the shows I really want on iTunes. So much cheaper!!!

I am about to take my life completely mobile here in a week or two.
I am looking into which iphones are better ,which plan will work for me and also
am curious about ipads vs laptops as I dont want to deal with all online stuff being on a tiny phone. My laptop is dead anyway so I want to make a wise choice.
I need something to store a resume ,pictures, music and thats about it.

I'm with at&t and wonder if a hot spot (blah blah) is something I need.
I dont want to go there and have them talk me into a bunch of
shit I just dont need.300mg plan for phone? 3g for ipad? ugh I'm clueless.
I am doing all this to simplify my life so the monthly bill is important to me
but I also need something I'll be happy with.
I really want to choose wisely. I would appreciate any and all suggestions.
It sucks but I really dont have the time to really research anything.
Things have just fallen into place and I have to order what I want, fairly quickly.
I'm trying to envision a smoooth transition without having to crawl on the roof for a signal or smacking anything around because it's too slow :|
pms appreciated because you may have to talk to me like I'm five or something. snort

iPod Touch: It got me through my months-long illness and recovery, and I adore it. I have a little rubber case for it and I've done Rushniki embroidery along the back to make it into a Ukepod. I keep it stashed in the car to play music rather than have stacks of CDs.

iPhone: It's my electronic work leash, bed-reader and method of data capture.

iPad: Assigned to me for work. I mainly just use it to take inventory, quickly send files zipping through the ether around the office and take pictures of intricately-drawn and planned whiteboards to send to the people who phone into meetings where these drawings are created.

I like my devices. :)

I have a question for my iFriends:

Is it possible to transfer music from an iPod to a computer? Does one need some special software? I've googled it and found a lot of stuff that looks questionable to me. But I'm not techie. Help.

Thank you. :)

i copy from my itunes to a hard drive then to whatever i want....

Dude,

it depends on you. For ME, I could never replace my laptop with an ipad... i store about 10,000 photos and process them all on my laptop... i watch movies on netflix on my iphone at night and love it,,, others say it's too small...

i have the 15 inch MacBrookPro 2009 edition and i LOVE this machine, for the first time since the laptop/computer i don't want to replace it. i have to do a software upgrade but that's optional, it runs fine and believe me, i run it through the mill.....

Now Syr who uses the computer for browsing the net and checking email hasn't turned on her laptop since we got her the ipad. It's not a 3g edition because that is a whole nother charge from the phone company and she just doesn't need it, there is wifi everywhere and she hardly needs that function.

My spirit sister uses her iphone like a computer, she checks weather, email, facebook even keeps her grocery list on it...

The plans are different every where you go, so you may have to end up going in and chatting them up!

I'm not sure you can copy the iPod content to a computer. I've only known to Copy from the computer to the iPod and all you need is the USB cord. I could be mistaken.
Dude, I think an iPad will work for you for what you want to use it for. It is a big iphone. I would suggest a Droid phone cause you can hook it up to a mini laptop but i'm not sure AT&T Carries them; they are more known for IPhones. I would suggest if you can go to an apple store with these questions. As for needing wi fi, internet, how many gigs, maybe they have a bundle or unlimited option. You can always downgrade if you don't use it alot. I'm not sure what all at& t offers, I have Verizon. Maybe some others will come in and answer also. ,

So, interesting experience recently. I try to stay up-to-date on upgrades and OSes. Currently, my MacBook Pro is at Lion (and will likely be at Mountain Lion a week or two after release). Yesterday morning a new patch was released for Lion and I was one of the first to download and install it. Unfortunately for me, it had some bad code and completely trashed my OS. Now, I admit that I hadn't done a backup recently but I knew that was my own fault so didn't worry much about that. I was more concerned about having access to my laptop.

Well, something I wasn't aware was that not only does Lion have it's own little recovery partition, it also has it's own simple wireless driver and, if you need to, will do an in-place re-install of the OS (Operating system). To get to this press Command+R at boot. It took me a bit of time to find a stable wireless to use (I'm at a hotel this week -- big shock that wireless sucks here) but once it found that, it downloaded it, installed it and rebooted.

And I got all my data still intact, all the applications still working and I'm good as golden again. And I think I'll wait until I'm at home to do the update as it'll be easier from the home wireless if it continues to screw things up.

Living in the house that Apple built:

Big iMac
Baby Macbook (air 11")
iPhone 4s
iPod 80g
Airport extreme

Now that I have just uploaded Mountain Lion to the Mac brothers I am thinking of adding Apple TV as a compliment to my Roku. Even though there will be a fair bit of overlap, I'm thinking they can fill each others gaps. I like the idea of hanging out on the sofa with the air and having it mirror onto the big TV.

I know it is probably too early to ask, but has anyone tried the Mountain Lion/Apple TV combo yet? Good? Not so good?

Also just noticed the app to use the phone as a remote while viewing iTunes content. Anyone tried that yet? I don't know how long this has been out.

Thanks for any feedback :cheesy:

So, Justin and I just bought an Apple TV and signed up for the hulu plus service. We are sick of paying DirecTV 100 bucks a month to only watch a few shows that we can stream in Hulu for 7.99 a month. The only issue I am having is streaming AirPlay from my iPad. We like big brother and can't get the CBS episodes to stream to the television. I can't find the airplay symbol since it is streaming directly from the CBS web page. Is there a way around this? Also, can you use AirPlay with YouTube?

Thanks! :-)

I will be interested to see how you work this out. I will pick up an Apple TV unit mid-September (in case they make any changes, which I doubt), and will want to use it in a similar way with a Macbook air.

I think it's a safe bet that You tube will have to go through Mountain Lion since Google owns it. :) Apple is playing nice with some outside content providers, but I don't see that one happening.

i can be just a tad technology challenged lol.
i do not have an iphone, though i do have a new smart phone and indeed, it is smarter than me. i just want to text and call people, my phone might be able to do my housework, i'm unsure .. i'm working my way up from my slide phone i had, lol!!

ANYway, Daddy bought me an Ipod, for running..
And i feel like i am joining the ranks in technology here, i have figured out how to use Itunes now with the help of some of Daddy's co-workers, and am sooooo happy listening to music on my runs now..i'm really loving itunes!

Glad for this thread though, incase i have questions!

Chefhmboyrd and I have:
Ipod nano 2nd gen
Ipod touch (not the newest, the one before it)
Ipad 2
Macpro computer I lovingly call "the boat anchor" since it is huge and heavy.

I hope t-mobile has their sh!t together when Apple releases their latest iPhone, because I wants an iPhone bad.

I L O V E my ipad. Love - love - love it. Did I say how much I love my iPad?
It is the bomb for email, surfing the web, and any goofing off one could want to do. We won ours - the chef and his endless useless trivia knowledge and incredible knowledge of music made it happen.
Once you go through the initial Adobe flash withdrawal, which was short and painless, you will find your life useless without one. :)

I was considering buying a macbook but was going to end up spending about $3500 to get what I want. I got a drumset instead.

Don't have iPhones, and refuse to buy them.

But ... I do have a iPod Touch 4th Gen and I bought Mare an iPad 2 for Christmas and She hasn't put it down yet.

Not a big fan of iTunes when it comes to transferring music. I prefer the drag and drop of mp3 players, but you get used to it.

We don't do smartphones. I guess it just isn't needed. We don't text much and we can't justify paying for more phone than we need.

Joining up (luckily I have a gf who tells me about these threads and says, "you should subscribe").

I use Macbooks at work and at home. We both have iPhones. Unfortunately they are 3GS, but I may upgrade soon because I think my phone is slowing down.

My iPad is one of my favorite toys. I read books on it, take notes in meetings, and do lots of other things with it. I use a bluetooth key board with it when I want to really type because I'm not a big fan of the onscreen keyboard.

Hoping to learn a lot from folks here.

I haven't been able to get on the spotify bandwagon yet. I like to stream pandora from my Bluetooth in my car and spotify requires a monthly fee (I believe). Just as an FYI, for those of you using the latest Mac OS and doing the updated to Java 7 this may interfere with our chat program and all java on Firefox (it happened to me today and I had to revert to Java 6).

If you are comfortable with the commandline follow the instructions in this KB article: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5559?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US

Otherwise, use Safari with Java 7 (you cannot use Chrome since Chrome is a 32-bit app and Java 7 is a 64-bit app)

I've always wondered how this is any different than a large smart phone.. It probably is better?

I liked Apple more in the 80s, into the 90s when they weren't as popular. I seemed to have gotten away from them as far as computers and phones go. Maybe because there are other contenders out there for smart phones and when I went with the Droid after I was gonna get an iPhone and they were out of them. The salesman showed me a Droid. I bought it and haven't turned back. . I still like itunes and ipod but as for a phone I chose a different smart phone and I guess I'm happy with it that I haven't had to look elsewhere and just my opinion iphones, ipads are pricey compared to other similar items by another brand.

I didnt bother with gettin the one that has cellular on it. mainly cuz that they charge, if you have it activated, an additional 30 - 45 bucks a month. and that is with limited data plan. no thanks when all i got to do is be near wifi. and these days , just about everyone has a router. I can send text messeges without the cellular on the mini ipad , but it can only send text's to someone who has iphone, ipad..etc etc. at no charge.

to me, the cellular is just waste of money. my sister got one with the cellular ( 3G ) and she never had it turned on and yet paid an additional 100 bucks ( or something like that ) to have that option.

The iPad plans are 250MB for $14.99 or 3Gb for $30. You can set it up so you only pay for what you need if you like. If you want the hotspot feature, you can go to the 5GB for $50. These are the AT&T prices.

This is really interesting and something I have been talking with a couple of other friends about too. It seems more and more like we (electronics consumers) are being coerced into choosing whole eco-systems instead of ala carte some of this and that.

Like Hollylane mentions, Apple is really setting up a closed loop of products and proprietary services. OS specific apps, co-ordinating through their cloud, even special connections instead of standards like USB and the like. All to work on their hardware exclusively.

I also see this happening with Google. The Android OS couples with that specific hardware and their apps and their cloud service (Gdrive) and their special browser, Chrome, tablet, etc.

Now Amazon with their readers, tablets, club membership (prime). They have their own cloud storage, music and video stores, subscription items, exclusive deals with content interaction providers.

I think that for now and a while to come, this is what it is. Yes, alot of this can be blended, I use all three cloud services as well as both Safari and Chrome browsers, and have been using a Roku streaming box because I can get both Netflix and Amazon streaming, I am going to migrate to and apple tv because they have decided to play nice with those two and I can use it to put whatever is on my laptop to a bigger screen, like iTunes U lectures.

But yes, we seem to have to choose what eco system to buy into for now. I am going for Apple for creation and computing, although I use a lot of Google software, and Amazon for consumption, kindle reader and if I decide on a tablet it will likely be a Fire.

It is a strange place for this to land and I think consumers will eventually drive it to a point of better compatibility. I hope it is soon.

i broke down and got a new iphone. Since i was in love with my 4s i wanted another one. Best Buy said they were out and sold me a 5. So Fine.

Afterwards i was annoyed that cases and cords do not fit the 5. i have the coolest Hello Kitty LSU tigers case that i am very fond of.

i did like that is it slimmer and lighter.

Then i started having major problems with texting. Lots of *not delivered* and the recipient saying they are getting multiple texts, and i am getting them very late, like the next day.

Wifi acting crazy etc.. After a few calls to SPrint they said to go exchange the phone.

Best Buy of course said it is not the phone, it's Sprint. i didn't care, i wanted a 4s like i wanted to begin with. They reluctantly exchanged it, and gave me a big fat refund for the difference. They sold me an iphone 4s for 49.99.

So far so good. Maybe it was a fluke with that phone but i was too annoyed to think about getting another one.

So, tell me geeks - techies - apple lovers

_____ISO of a new stylus ... for the work I do - i have both systems (mac and pc) - but let's face it - you can't beat the mac (graphically) - not really...im debating between the Adonit stylus or the new Bambo sylus - while i love my ipad - the samsung note - has the (writing and pen features) a tad better than the apple market thus far (unless I am missing something) which is why I write and ask ... i take extensive hand written notes - so, i'm looking for a (thin) pen like feature ... the Adonit seems to be what I may be looking for - but if anyone has personal experience with one or the other and can shed some light - please do... and thanks.

Anyone else super annoyed that Gmail stopped pushing it's email to any devices not Google!? What the hey? I have had the same email for like 8 years. Now, I have to change it because my business is slowing it roll. I have to wait 15-20min to get an email. That equates death in my job!

The complexity is changing ones email address in my field is daunting! It's gonna take months to fully transition. I have to order new business cards and marketing stuff. Ugh!

Oh well.... Onward. Lol.

i a hoping someone can help me out here.

i have a 15 inch '09 MacBook Pro that i am so in love with :awww:

It's been amazing, so far.

The battery was causing problems on my trackpad, because it needs to be replaced.

So i did the unthinkable and took the back cover off and removed the battery, sure enough that was the problem (thank you Youtube!)

Now i need a new battery- i am just pricing them up and want to install myself.

Anyone know where to get one? i am really leary off brands especially the ones from china that come in a brown plain wrapper....

Apple's E-Book Price-fixing Case

By THE EDITORIAL BOARD
It came as no surprise that a federal judge on Wednesday ruled against Apple in an e-book price-fixing case. The easy money was always on the Justice Department, which had evidence that Apple conspired with five major book publishers to manipulate the market. Yet it remains an open question whether these legal proceedings served consumers’ best interest.

Before Apple launched its iBookstore in 2010, Amazon controlled 90 percent of the e-book market. Amazon set retail prices as it saw fit, often steeply discounting best-sellers and hawking them for $9.99, at a loss. Not unreasonably, publishers worried that Amazon was too dominant and were delighted when Apple came on the scene, introducing an “agency model” in which the publishers set retail prices and Apple took a cut. Apple proposed price caps of $12.99 and $14.99 for new releases, with contracts that also included a “most-favored-nation” clause: if a competitor’s list price for an e-book ever dipped below Apple’s, the publishers would match it, allowing the iBookstore to offer the best deal.

The Justice Department argued, and Judge Denise Cote of Federal District Court in Manhattan agreed, that Apple “facilitated a horizontal conspiracy” to eliminate retail price competition. Once the publishers were cozy with Apple, the Justice Department said, they used that relationship as a cudgel against Amazon, threatening to withhold new content unless Amazon moved to the agency model and let prices rise. The strategy worked. Amazon switched, and its prices went up.

To make its case, the government unearthed a telling e-mail from Steve Jobs, Apple’s chief executive at the time, in which he said he could tolerate Apple’s contracts with the publishers “as long as they move Amazon to the agent model too for new releases for the first year.”

Apple plans to appeal the decision.

The big picture is that while Apple’s pact with the publishers raised prices in the short term, it also brought much-needed competition to the e-book marketplace. It is estimated that Apple now controls 10 percent of that market and Amazon 65 percent, with Barnes & Noble and others splitting the rest. That is healthier for the publishers and for consumers, too.

Has anyone upgraded to iOS 8 yet?

I got the new iPhone yesterday and it does not look like there is an option to use one of your photos as wallpaper.

Under settings > wallpaper, photos are not listed- just two of Apple's standard wallpapers.

I can't find a how-to online yet either.

:missing:

Thanks.
