About 2 months ago, my husband and I went down to the "corridor of cruelty" here in Houston to feed stray dogs. We were appauled at the conditions of an area that is only 20 minutes from where we live. To say that this area is poverty stricken is an understatement. In all of my life, even growing up in the ghetto, and poor, I've never seen such a place as this one.
There has been alot of media attention on this area, and the things that go on there. This area of town is used as a garbage dump of trash and animals.
There is also lots of dog fighting in the area, so frequently dead dogs are dumped any and everywhere. There are also alot of horses in the area, frequently in small yards, with trash, no food, water, or shelter. This is a residential area and I have a hard time believing that it's zoned for horses and cattle..(we've also seen cows in the same conditions) The controversy surrounding this part of town is this. No municipality wants to claim the area as thiers. The city of Houston says that it's just one street past thier "zone" and does nothing. The county does nothing and says it's the city of Houston who is responsible. A local organization has been trying to go out and at least spay/neuter the population of wild dogs.
About Jack.
We found out about this area, and decided one Saturday to go see it, and brought bags of food to feed any dogs we saw. Driving down one street, we saw Jack. A puppy about 4/5 months old..no collar, just walking the street. I picked up Jack, and knocked on a door close to where we found him. No one answered but we knew someone was home. We took Jack home, bathed him, fed him, and have had him ever since. Our local SPCA is a great resource for puppies because they frequently are adoped in a matter of hours, or just a few days. We took Jack there, hoping someone would adopt him and provide a good home. The intake personel said that Jack looked "pitt" and said that they would put him down without offering him up for adoption. We couldnt let that happen, so we took him home. We tried again at the humaine society, and they looked at his back legs and said he was "pitt" and would put him down. I have no idea how they see him as pitt, his back legs are very skinny..what do legs have to do with it?? When we found Jack, he weighed 24 pounds, and currently has probly gained about 4 pounds. We are looking for a loving home for Jack as he is probly going to be a pretty big boy. We live in an apartment, and Jack is getting too big for our place already. We both work about 50-60 hrs a week, and Jack is kennelled for at least 8 hrs a day. I want the best home for Jack, so I would like to find someone with a yard, or land he can run around on. He will be getting all his shots, and neutered this month. He is in very good health. He's got a great personality, he's VERY smart, and learns tricks after showing him just a couple of times. He knows sit, fetch, down, and high five. He loves the outdoors, but is still a bit shy of other ppl that are not his family, and other dogs. He needs a bit of work on the leash. He's housebroken. It took awhile to get him not to poop in the house. I didnt realize he pooped so much!! So when I feed him, I take him out right away..no waiting 10 min's.
If you or anyone you know would be willing to take Jack into your family, I will fly Jack at my expense to wherever you are...or drive if it's only a one day drive.
Pics are in the gallery. Please help find Jack a loving home!!!
Thanks,
Irish

i am sorry to read about the sad state of affairs in your city for jack, and the other dogs, irishgirl.
here is a link to a super database-
http://www.indiana-paw.com/indianadb.htm
this breaks down state wide pb rescue. texas has plenty-
http://pbrc.net/webapp/cgi-bin/index.cgi/3e60a18a0b1736ae144468b1971da86b
http://pbrc.net/webapp/cgi-bin/orgs_by_state.cgi/3e60a18a0b1736ae144468b1971da86b
yes, it's for my state, but that's ohk! the links above, which list texas as well as lots of other states, came from clicking on a pb rescue in indiana! :) rescue groups have serious connections with other people/neighbouring counties/states, et c. i would encourage you to write one really good email- include details of conditons of the city, and your being responsible enough to recognise that you cannot keep him with work schedules at your address. email it out to many, many people: mixed breeds, pit, large/medium dog, sanctuaries, foster people, et c. i've had pretty good luck with this list. maybe there's even one like it [pet super database]one for your state/region?
have you considered hiring someone to walk him in the middle of the day? that might be a fairly easy solution if you decided to live with jack.
i'll look some more for resources-

Very cute. Good luck. We already have 6 dogs and 6 cats.
I take in dogs, potty train, teach a few manners and then adopt. It makes their chances better. He's a cutie. Please keep us updated on this.

What a cutie patootie! There's NO way I can take him in, not to mention being almost 2000 miles away (even with your VERY GENEROUS offer to pay to ship/deliver him), but I applaud your efforts, Irish and hubby!
I do see a bit of Pit but who flippin' cares? Sure, some places won't rent to you because of it or, if they do, they will charge a higher deposit and/or monthly pet fee. Okay, that sucks, admittedly.
However, LOOK at him! He's adorable! Didn't I read that he has already learned commands and is being crate-trained? Check! Housebroken? Check! Good temperament? Check! He'll come neutered and with all his shots up to date? Check!
I really, really wish I could take him, Irish. It makes my heart :cheer: looking at him, but it's completely unrealistic for me. I will, however, broach him to my housemates and see if they know of a family who might be looking for a dog. Our house is a military house, so they have tons of contacts. Hopefully, someone good and prepared will step up to the plate for Jack (love his name, btw! I can almost see some JRT in him in the first pic.).

he is a beautiful dog. Lucky him that you rescued him first from the corridor of cruelty and then from being put to sleep at the shelter and HS. Pitt rescues are overwhelmed with the needs of their purebreds. I dont know if any of them deal with mixes. I dont think he looks pitty tho. He has such a soft handsome face and big paws. He looks more lab like in structure but his coloring is very boxer like.
Is he a good barker? Maybe someone could use an alert dog in the house.
You might try your local 4H office and ask if a child would like to take him on as a 4H project. They do have dog projects. Many kids cant afford a dog...so maybe if you offer to throw in food and some shots, he could end up in a wonderful new home. And, if you talk to the newspapers about it, and they run a short story as a human interest story, some of the other dogs in the corridor of cruelty might get a second chance too....

What a PRECIOUS baby...
If Jack were a girl, I would take him in a heartbeat. We lost our precious 19/20 yr old lab in October.
We have three males dogs, already dominance issues, and if I brought another male into the mix, well, Jess would just implode.

WOW!!
Thanks everyone for the encouragement!!!!! Thanks Jack for posting the pics for me!! Makes my heart sing to see his pic here!
I was thinking boxer/lap as well. Maybe I just havent hung around any pitt bulls to tell. I"m going to do the DNA test on Jack, and get it figured out..that way I can be honest about his breed to whomever will home him.
I did contact a pittbull rescue here that takes mixes. They wrote back and said they had no room, but offered low cost kenneling. Still, I cant imagine him living like that.
Did I mention Jack brings you his leash when he wants to go out? (Which is often..lol)
He does seem to have his big boy voice already, but really isnt a barker. I think it's a confidence thing..but good for an apartment. He will bark when you play with him, when he gets super excited...but not non stop. He's got quite the handsome bark.
Thank you everyone for helping me put out the word for Jack..he sends kisses!

Wow this story is so sweet and wonderful. The world needs more people like everyone here that cares so much! Irish, thank you and your sweetheart for being such amazing, unselfish, caring souls! .... I would take him in a heart beat but just committed to rescuing another Lhasa. (Landlady said only 2 dogs allowed)... but I just wanted to add, when I first saw his picture, he reminds me very strongly of an African or Rhodesian Ridgeback (especially in the face...I've pasted a picture of a puppy African Ridgeback) In his pictures, he doesn't seem to have the barrel chest or bowed legs of a pit. And if he is part pit, the sweetest dog (besides my little side-kick) I've ever known was "Luna", pit/black lab mix and as gentle as a newborn kitten. Very loving and very smart like you describe Jack. After meeting Luna, I am certain that the pit isn't inherently bad and aren't all monsters...it's the horrible, mean owners that want to turn their dogs into monsters. Owners like that are the monsters, not the pit.
Who knows...he may be a Heinz 57...all kinds mixed into one sweet doggy... but I'd bet Lab/Boxer and Ridgeback are the primary ones.
BEST OF LUCK!! http://www.tarasplace.net/images/baby.jpg

He is very cute and looks to have a lot of Boxer in him (I've had 3 Boxers- very sweet dogs).
There are a lot of misconceptions about Pit Bulls (Stafforshire Terriers). Yes, they are very strong and quick, but actually even tempered. I have seen just about any breed have some bad dogs (aggressive). And yes, those that fight them are monsters. I respect any kind of dog in terms of the fact that they are dogs and the best prevention against any dog problems behaviorally, is training, love, consistency and being responsible for your dog. They need exercise and attention in order to be good pooches! Its up to us to give them good care and work with them
I sure hope Jack gets a good home, he looks very intelligent (his eyes) and I bet he would make someone a great pet! I see Lab, too .. maybe some Pit, but I think that may well be the Boxer in him. His color is a perfect Boxer fawn and his black muzzle is Boxer (also a bit boxy).

Thank you SO much for this!!!
I've only witnessed Jack with one other dog so far. My son has a mini daush. that lives with his father, and stays with us on the occasional weekend. Jack was VERY excited for a friend to play with. The only issue was that the mini only weighs 4 lbs, and Jack was a little overwhelming for him. Jack was all over him, playing, pouncing, trying to get him to play, even bringing him toys, and a friendly bark as if to say "comon! let's play". The mini isnt used to other dogs at all, and would nip and bark at Jack..to which Jack responded with a friendly bark back and a pounce. So mostly we kept a good eye on them, and wouldnt be alone...I wouldnt want Jack to pounce and hurt him, as the mini is older and has back problems. I have seen Jack get a bit freightened when he's heard other dogs bark from afar...but when he sees other dogs walking on our walks, he is very alert, and curious. We have a huge dogpark here in the Houston area..maybe I should take him to see how he does..I know socializing is very important for pups.
Also, if I find Jack a home, and for some reason it doesnt work out, I will pay to fly him back here to us.

After doing research on the DNA testing for dogs, here's what they say regaurding the "pit bull" aspect.
The term “Pit-bull” does not refer to a single or recognized breed of dog, but rather to a genetically diverse group of breeds. Pit-bull type dogs have historically been bred by combining guarding type breeds with terriers for certain desired characteristics – and as such they may retain many genetic similarities to the likely progenitor breeds and other closely related breeds.
Due to the genetic diversity of this group, we cannot build a DNA profile for the Pit-bull. If a Pit-bull type dog was tested, we might anticipate that Wisdom Panel Insights test detect and report moderate to Minor amounts of one or more distantly related breeds to those used to breed the dog, it is possible that one or more of the following breeds might be detected at moderate to Minor amounts: the American Staffordshire terrier, Boston terrier, Bull terrier, Staffordshire Bull terrier, Mastiff, Bullmastiff Boxer, Bulldog and various small terriers like the Parson Russell. These breeds would be detected because some markers in these breeds have genetic identity at a minority of the markers Wisdom Panel Insights test uses to the breeds in our database.
I guess maybe this wont really tell me if Jack has pitt or not.
The test is almost a hundred dollars, and it's probly not going to tell me either way...

I couldn't stop thinking about Jack and your situation with needing to find out if he has any pit in him...
I wonder if there's any Breed Experts (other than SPCA staff) that could examine him and make an educated written statement/guess? Maybe the American Kennel Club could recommend someone that specializes in Boxers, Pits, Ridgebacks...and similar breeds?
Dunno...just trying to help, hon. Anyway...if my 2 cents are worth anything... Jack strikes me even more as Ridgeback after finding a few more pics on google...

Well, so far, I havent seen much shedding like when we pet him, or have him in our bed, or on the couch, or in the car. I washed his comforter today that I keep in his kennel, and there was some hair on it..but not tons. Maybe dogs dont shed in winter?? I"m not sure.

As Christie already mentioned we have way too many dominance issues to bring in another boy, sorry Jack and other Jack..lol..
He is such a gorgeous boy, I'm sure he will find a loving home fairly easily! Sounds like he has a great disposition too!

Dogs do shed less in winter, much like we also shed less (hair on the head) and our nails grow slower too. The cold puts the follicles in a semi-dormant stage, someone once told me.

Just got off the phone with Ash. If all goes well, Jack will be on his way to being an Austinite soon!! whoot! I'm so happy Jack is going to someone I adore!!!
In other Jack news....
He's now tall enough to reach the counters. He has snatched some tasty treats, along with a 3 roll of paper towels, empty cookie package, my kids play sword, foil (which was UNDER the pizza, and wala! no pizza for jack, but plenty of foil to chew on!) Thankfully, Jack hasnt swallowed any of this stuff..he just loves to chew, chew , chew. Tons of bones and clean rags are mandatory for jack to keep busy. Also he has adopted my slippers for his own, and takes one everywhere. Including outside to pee and poop. Seriously..so funny.
More later!!

Wheeeeeeeeeeee!!
This is wonderful news and, Ashton, I TOLD YOU!

This is great news! I agree with Lips that Ash would be a great Daddy for Jack (the puppy, not the hammer) ;)

OHHHH!!! This is absolutely FANTASTIC, VERY HAPPY NEWS!!! I wish everyone the BEST!! Jack sounds like a real Love Hound!! LOL At least my doggies aren't tall enough to reek havoc in my kitchen, but I'd love Jack just the same. He's just a sneaky little fart that has everyone wrapped around his paw.
BEST OF LUCK!!
(Please send pictures of Jack and his new Daddy asap?)

Aww...I know the feeling hon. Sorry. It's such a wonderful thing though, that you found someone you know and like to turn him over to. That is SO much better than giving him up to a stranger that you have no idea about his future with. You've got a HUGE heart and have done a really good thing!! I admire each of you!!
This is a very happy story!! I wish the daily news was filled with more happy stories like Jack's!!
