Hey, guys. I really enjoy watching the original series on these sites. However, it is good to know if something is worth it before I pick it.
This is the place to ask others if certain series are good and to share the ones you love!

I am ready to start a new original series on either Amazon or Netflix. I seem to prefer the Amazon series to the Netflix ones.
Has anyone seen Hand of God (on Amazon)? What did you think of it?
Other series you recommend?
I just saw the two seasons of Fortitude. I would rate it as a B. Worth watching.

Have you seen Goliath with Billy Bob Thornton? It's really good.
Bosch, based on Harry Bosch book series-I have liked all 3 seasons.
The series based on the Phillip K. Dick story, Man in the High Castle. Very well-done.
If you want comedy, Catastrophe is truly funny. I binged 3 seasons in a weekend. Of course, the seasons were only 6 episodes each. :)
I am sure you probably have already watched Transparent, the Golden Globe winner.
I tried Sneaky Pete with Giovanni Ribisi but I could not get into it. It had good reviews.
Those come to mind.

Have you seen Sense8?
I have plowed on through most of it.
I love how beautifully it is filmed. I love the diversity of the cast and I love all of the filming locales around the world.
All of that being said: half the time, I don't understand or get what the hell is going on.
I understand that they share a consciousness (or something) but I really just lose the train of thought or process way too frequently. It ceases to be enjoyable for me each time I say WTF is happening now?
It was cancelled but I read that pornhub or xhamster offered to do another season but there is no word on Netflix responding in any way...

They're doing a 2-hour special to wrap things up. There are also a lot of people trying to fight for a 3rd season, but the shooting was just so expensive.
I also loved how beautiful it was!

Not easy to watch, if listening to Ed Kemper or Richard Speck would be difficult for you, it might be tough to watch.
That said, it is really, really, well done.
It is the story of the beginning of the Behavioral Science unit at the FBI.
10 episodes.

This is timely Anya because i am going to house sit the first week.of November, and I am adding this to my list of shows to watch!
I also looked into the back story on the series and discovered that's it's based loosely off the book of the same name, written by John Douglas, whose career was as an behaviour analyst (profiler) with the FBI.
Here's an interesting article as well, which talks a bit about the show, too. The article actually covers how behavior analysts arrive at identifying psycho/sociopaths. Very interesting reading.

I kept seeing reviews for Dark but did not really read what it was about. I am glad that I didn't because it was so absorbing to watch it unfold. It is German but a Netflix original. I just looked at a trailer on YouTube that was subtitled but I am watching an English version that came up automatically. It must be dubbed but if it is, very quickly, I stopped even thinking about it. It has been compared to Stranger Things but for me, that comparison did not last long.
It is really, really good. I was going to watch one episode this morning and now I am on number 8  . I read season 2 was just given the green light by Netflix and I am really glad! I am only including the teaser trailer here in case you want to find out for yourselves...

I watched The Keepers....and original Netflix docu-series about the late Sister Catherine Cesnik who was murdered back in the late 1960s. Two of Cesnik's students, trying to figure out how many others were sexually molested by the horrible Baltimore parish priest, created an social media page, where 'Jane Doe' (an victim) revealed herself to thousands of others, and has been an critical in the lay-person investigation of this crime. Very good docu-series.
Last night I found an interesting original HBO series called Crashing.....season 1 has seven episodes and season 2 premiers on the 21st of January (this month)! OMG, I really enjoyed this program. It's about an man who not only fails in his marriage but fails as an stand up comic, but it's incredibly hilarious, LOL :jester:
Eta: Sarah Silverman has an cameo role on this series, and for those of you who enjoy the cooking shoe by Rachel Ray, she's in it too.

The first episode is currently streaming on Hulu. Hulu doesn't make all episodes available of their series at once. Each episode is available on Wednesdays.
If the rest of the episodes are as good as the first one is, it will be very worth a watch.
Portion of a review in The Atlantic:
The Gripping History of The Looming Tower
The new Hulu series is a suspenseful, star-studded excavation of the failure to prevent 9/11.
SOPHIE GILBERT MAR 1, 2018
..........
Produced for television by Lawrence Wright with the Oscar-winning documentarian Alex Gibney and the veteran showrunner Dan Futterman, The Looming Tower is a taut, tense restaging of the internecine squabbles between the FBI and the CIA in the lead-up to 9/11.
Like Wright’s (Pulitzer Prize-winning) book, it makes the case that the failure of U.S. intelligence agencies to share information thwarted any chance they might have had of stopping the attacks. But where the book focused primarily on the people who conspired to orchestrate the worst terrorist attack on American soil, the series reorients itself around the people who failed to stop them.
On one side is John O’Neill (Jeff Daniels), a larger-than-life FBI counterterrorism chief grappling with the increasing threat of al-Qaeda. On the other is Martin Schmidt (Peter Sarsgaard), O’Neill’s CIA counterpart. O’Neill was a real person; Schmidt is reportedly an amalgam, although there are reasons beyond his initials to deduce whom he’s based on.
From the very first episode, O’Neill and Schmidt are at each other’s throats for reasons that are hard to ascertain. Schmidt guards CIA intelligence with fanaticism, while O’Neill resorts to spewing profanities and epithets when he can’t get what he wants.

Dapper, I have not found a source other than Variety and The New York Times. Every month they post the best new show or series.
I just try to remember to check each month.
A very good documentary series that I have been watching on Netflix is called Flint Town.
A partial review:
Flint Town Is an Alarming Portrait of Cops, Politics, and a Reeling City
By Matt Zoller Seitz
Not many TV shows can be as transporting as a well-made, long-form documentary series about a specific time and place. Flint Town is that kind of series. It takes you to a place that you probably wouldn’t visit unless someone you knew already lived there, a place that Hollywood’s fiction makers would likely never go, either, because so much of the dramatic landscape consists of deprivation, disappointment, and constant challenges, none of which will be solved by the arrival of a clever hero who doesn’t play by the rules.
In their Netflix docuseries, director-cinematographers Zackary Canepari, Jessica Dimmock, and Drea Cooper spend a year embedded with the police department of Flint, Michigan, a city reeling from a series of vicious blows to its body politic, sustained over a period of decades.
First, General Motors, the city’s biggest employer, closed plants, laid off workers, and ultimately relocated to the suburbs (a move subsidized by the city of Flint itself). Then came the water crisis, which started when the city changed the source of its drinking water to the Flint River to save money but failed to treat the water properly, exposing more than 100,000 residents to lead contaminants.
The city depicted in Flint Town is a husk of its former self, and so is the police force that provides its focus. Despite its simple yet sweeping title, the series focuses on the day-to-day challenges of the city’s police department. It’s ultimately less of a “portrait of a city” documentary than a Cops-style look at the particulars of police work that just happens to be set in Flint, with artier, more atmospheric filmmaking (lot of tight, abstracted close-ups of objects illuminated by flashing red-and-blue lights), a much more frank assessment of how race and class issues affect community relations, and the kinds of glimpses of the officers’ home lives that the Fox series abandoned early in its run.
The overall erosion of Flint and the cratering of its police department are intertwined, of course: In 2016, one of the African-American officers featured in the series, Brian Willingham, wrote a New York Times editorial that asked, “How can citizens in Flint trust the police to protect them when they can’t even trust their government to provide them with clean water?” But for the most part, Flint Town considers these issues in a universalizing way that could apply to any police department in any city with a diverse population.
As the series tells us, this is an underfunded and understaffed department scrambling just to get by. When the story starts in November 2015, the Flint P.D. has just 98 officers, down from 300 a few years earlier, and daily police work looks and sounds a lot like triage. An early call by Officer Bridgette Balasko sees her responding to a robbery 27 hours after the initial phone call.
The rest of the story sees a change in management at both city hall (the election of Mayor Karen Weaver) and the police department (Tim “Two Guns” Johnson). The latter responds to an unconscionably high crime rate by promising to implement a more aggressive, “broken windows” style of policing that puts the citizenry on edge. The newest batch of 18 recruits includes a pair of officers who’d be criticized as too contrived if they appeared in a fiction series: Dion Reed and his mother Maria.
As intelligent and considerate as it is, the series has a somewhat repetitious feel until the third episode, which jumps ahead to July 2016, six months into the Chief Johnson’s tenure. From here through the end of the story, Flint Town shows how the mentality of American police is shaped by their personal politics, which in turn are shaped by their consistently unpleasant and sometimes fearful experiences on the job, as well as reactionary and sometimes racist attitudes handed down throughout the inception of modern policing.
The series eventually starts weaving community reaction to the police into the story more insistently, in a way that creates dialogue between the officers and the public they’re supposed to protect and serve. Rather than just show how civilians react during traffic stops or at town meetings, the filmmakers have them sit for interviews (framed head-on, in the manner of a mid-period Errol Morris documentary) and go into nonpolice locales, such as Melly’s barbershop, where the predominantly African-American clientele speak freely.

Yeah. After years of fighting it. I have slowly, but steadily, made my way through all five seasons effective this morning. I liked it, but dang that was painful. My mind is ready for something else.
Altered Carbon.....................
I'm tentatively enjoying this one. However, it is not a show you can have running in the background. You (or I and my gf) have to actively watch and listen to get it. But so far it seems pretty cool.
Thanks for the suggestions and thread!

I took a chance on this new Netflix series. The acting is excellent and the story is absorbing and well-written. This is season 1.
From IMDb:
When 15-year-old black cyclist Brenton Butler dies in a hit-and-run accident -- with a white police officer behind the wheel of the vehicle -- Jersey City explodes with racial tension. This crime drama explores the aftermath of the accident, which includes an attempted cover-up by the police department and a volatile trial. Assistant prosecutor KJ wants to prosecute the hit-and-run as a hate crime, in addition to a negligent homicide. The longer the case drags on without a resolution, the more tense the situation becomes.
Regina King stars.

This looks excellent. I planned to watch it after only reading the first sentence of the description. I stopped watching the trailer part way through because trailers always spoil it for me.

Watched all 6 episodes of Wild Wild Country, most excellent and informative documentary series.
Had no prior knowledge of Osho (aka Bhagwan/Rajneesh) prior to watching series... as have never been involved in "cults" (christian or otherwise - grinz).
Reflections afterwards: glad that I'm a Canadian! Between the fear of those Oregonians involved in this story and Sheela's fear of losing power, was amazed that the so-called guru (Osho) who preached awareness was so unaware of what was going on under his very nose (ditto for all of Osho's followers).

Season 4 of Bosch on Amazon Prime streaming now.
I think it is the best season yet. I've been binging it the last couple of days and unfortunately am on episode #10, the last one.
I checked online and it was renewed for season 5.
If you get Hulu, season 2 of the Handmaid's Tale will begin streaming April 25th. Fantastic series.
The only negative with Hulu is that they only stream one episode per week so no binging is possible!
Putting in another plug for The Looming Tower, also on Hulu. I finished it this week. If you have Hulu, it is truly a series worth watching. All 10 episodes are now available.

I watched this for the first time last night and was intrigued by it. Not sure if I”ll continue to watch it (there may be too many triggers for me and I’m not a big fan of Thandie Newton), but it is thought provoking with some of my favorite actors (Jeffrey Wright and Ed Harris). Looks like another good series from HBO.

I posted this TV series in this thread, as I did a search for "HBO" and "HBO series" and "HBO television" and came up blank, and didn't know where else to put it - still a newbie in a sense.
I'm sorry Orema that Westworld was a trigger for you. Meditation is a way of life for me and I have used triggers to follow my reactions and dissolve them (at least, if one goes to the very end of the reaction - everything being connected inside).

The series finale of Sense 8 will be on Netflix on June 8th.
I had commented in another thread (can't remember which one) about the series.
I loved the diversity of the cast, the truly beautiful locales and I also found the series utterly confusing.
I will watch the last one anyway as it may tie it all together for me.
QYU8w4ONQVo
PS: A side note of trivia that is interesting, back in 2016, flilm director Lilly Wachowski came out as a transgender woman. She was the creator of the Matrix series of movies. Lilly and her sister Lana, created Sense 8.
Sense 8 has as its leads, a gay male couple, a lesbian couple and a straight couple. One half of the lesbian couple is a transwoman. (Not my assumption, I looked it up online).
It is this diversity of cast that feels really good to watch. "Our family" represented front and center, if you will.

Amazon Greenlights Barry Jenkins & Plan B’s ‘Underground Railroad’ Limited Series With Jenkins Directing All 11 Episodes
(https://deadline.com/2018/06/amazon-barry-jenkins-plan-b-the-underground-railroad-limited-series-jenkins-directing-all-11-episodes-1202404221/)
Amazon Studios landed the new take on the story of the underground railroad from Jenkins’ PASTEL and Brad Pitt’s Plan B, in March 2017 with a script-to-series commitment.
The project is based on Colson Whitehead’s bestselling novel The Underground Railroad, which won a Pulitzer Prize a month after Amazon bought the adaptation. The book, which drew critical praise for its imaginative blend of history and magical fable – moving beyond the boundaries of realism in its depiction of a mythical underground train that transports slaves across an alternate America — also was a 2016 National Book Award winner and Oprah Book Club pick.
The Underground Railroad, which will be released on Amazon Prime Video, centers on young Cora, a slave on a cotton plantation in Georgia. Life is hell for all the slaves, but especially bad for Cora; an outcast even among her fellow Africans, she is coming into womanhood—where even greater pain awaits. When Caesar, a recent arrival from Virginia, tells her about the Underground Railroad, they decide to take a terrifying risk and escape.
The underground railroad is no mere metaphor — engineers and conductors operate a network of tracks and tunnels constructed in secret beneath the very Southern soil upon which they’ve been enslaved. Cora and Caesar’s first stop is South Carolina, in a city that initially seems like a haven. But its placid surface masks an insidious scheme designed for its black denizens. And even worse: Ridgeway, a relentless slave catcher of mythic origin, is close on their heels. Forced to flee again, Cora embarks on a harrowing flight, state-by-state, seeking true freedom in a heroine’s journey carved through the soil and soul of America.
“It’s an absolute gift to have Barry Jenkins commit to directing all the episodes for our upcoming limited series The Underground Railroad,” said Jennifer Salke, Head of Amazon Studios. “Barry’s eye for character and sustained exhilarating, emotional storytelling style ensures that this project is in the right hands. We can’t wait to get started and bring this significant story to our Prime Video audience.”
Amazon has found success with another alternate-history drama series, The Man In The High Castle, set to return for Season 3 later this year.
Pastel, founded by Jenkins, Adele Romanski and Sara Murphy as a home for artists to create provocative, boundary-pushing work in film, television and beyond, is executive producing The Underground Railroad with Brad Pitt’s Plan B.

We binged watched 8 Seconds........
Very interesting to say the least, and I hope it's picked-up for another year!
Is this on Netflix? We watched Fearless (I believe that is what it is called) It is about the Brazilian bull riders in the PBR. Great show. It was sad to see and hear that most of the riders felt they were treated differently than the American, Canadian and Australian riders. Since we do follow the PBR I can see how and why they felt the way they do. The language barrier seems to be the biggest obstacle that the Brazillian riders and their families face. I also learned (must live under a rock) most people who are from Brazil speak Portuguese, who knew? We also found out that the Brazillian people have a similar event in Brazil like the World PBR finals that take place in Vegas. Except it is bigger and every seat in the arena is filled, unlike some previous PBR events my wife and I have attended. Anyway, sorry to ramble. Happy binge watching!

Amazon Original Series Forever, casts Fred Armisen and Maya Rudolph as a suburban married couple who decide to get out of the daily routine they’ve followed for the past 12 years. Their decision ends up being a bigger one than either of them intended.
King Lear is modern retelling of the famous Shakespeare tragedy. The series’ star-studded ensemble cast is led by Sir Anthony Hopkins as the titular king, whose efforts to divide his kingdom among his daughters meet with tragic results as he descends into madness. Joining Hopkins in the cast are Emma Thompson, Emily Watson, Jim Broadbent, Andrew Scott, Jim Carter, and Christopher Eccleston, among others familiar faces.
I'm sorry I don't have the exact dates these premier.

After he identifies Megan, tearing up over all the memories they had, and then gets the gruesome details of her death at the police station, he sees a man being questioned while holding her picture. Jonah follows the man out and when they confront each other, he finds out the horrible truth: The man is David Cheng, and he’s been married to Megan for twenty years. Jonah is flabbergasted, not able to comprehend that this woman he loves so much has been lying to him this whole time. Sure, she spent most of her time in HK, and wanted him to visit. But he has no idea why she’d keep her life there such a secret.

I just finished watching season 2 of Mindhunter (Netflix release), the main theme of all season 2 episodes was about catching the guy who had committed the "Atlanta child murders".
Very interesting... about the FBI, and how they coined the phrases "serial killer" and developed what they also coined as "profiling".
It appeared quite realistic and showed just how catching these monsters is affected by politics, racism, beliefs and just about everything else: including bureaucracy, sloppy police work - you name it!
The writer(s)? took quite a few liberties. Of the three main characters portrayed in the series, one was written in as single lesbian psychology professor and working in the basement HQ of their unit at Quantico (and she also has an affair with a woman). In reality, the woman who worked with the real Douglas was straight, a forensic nurse specializing in victimology, and never actually set foot in Quantico and was married and had kid(s).
Having never read Douglas's book, I don't know about the rest of Douglas's real partner, and/or the veracity of his partner's story line in the series - his troubled kid and wife...
One is given glimpses of quite a few of the serial killers they interviewed, as they worked out how to get profiles of these people (Manson, Kemper, Wayne Williams, etc.)
What I liked about the series is that they didn't show any of the ugly assaults that they monsters actually committed... so far... Actually, I don't like films like that, and don't watch them and have been known to usually fast forward if those scenes appear; I prefer seeing how they catch the bad guys and the interaction between the cops/detectives.

The Witcher just got released (Netflix), and I finished watching the first of the episodes (first season has 8 episodes)...
Well, it's a high fantasy series - full of magic, mystery, witches, wizards and mages (and our hero, Geralt the Witcher). It's really very well done, and an adaptation of a series of books (The Witcher saga) by a guy called Sapkowski. The setting is medieval, with great cinematography, the music is good, and so is the writing, and there are monsters and such like. Lots of action, battles, even romance...
"The Witcher Geralt, a mutated monster hunter, struggles to find his place in a world where people often prove more wicked than beasts."
