General Butch Appreciation Thread

What this is for: images, videos, and text about and for butches, miscellany about butches that doesn't really fit anywhere else (appreciative, not critical), general love found around the web for the butches in our lives
What this is not for: images of butches, personal one or two liners to the effect of "i love butches! so hot" [yes, but that's not the point :p], things unrelated to butches or the butch experience

Back in the day I incorporated the *Butch Sightings * migration chart. What was done was a femme would tag a butch on the ear with a tracking device so we could study their migration patterns. It basically lit up with these sightings, mostly at Trader Joes, the Subaru dealership or in a campground. A femme could nonchalantly *run* into a butch by predicting their whereabouts.

After much study and research, it was determined that butch is completely unpredictable, so we have been reduced to just using the 2x4 method.

That’s some serious appreciation.

i appreciate the journey of every butch. i love hearing how they came into their own, and want them to know i appreciate the struggle.

While us femmes have our own battles, butches have different ones, and it can’t have been an easy path.

This is the `General Butch Appreciation` thread so yes I do believe posts can be taken and are indeed meant to be taken as a compliment to all Butches, so long as the Butch reading it feels it fits comfortably with their own particular brand/fit of being on the Butch spectrum.

I give due respect to people until they prove they are not worthy of it. Given your comment I would say on this topic you would fall into that category.

I fall to see why you take issue with someone who is gracious enough to thank some of the posts on here.

Please fell free to DM if you wish to discuss this further as I do not want to derail this thread.

I'm not sure where the whole "earning respect" comment came from, but I think such sentiments are unnecessary and do not add to the overall aim of the thread.

For clarification purposes, I started this thread as a way to show a general appreciation for all butches (yes, all) and to have a place to inject a bit of butch/femme specificity and also positivity into this space. If someone sees themselves or a loved one in one of the posts, that's great! That's what it's here for. If not, no problem, but if that's the case, then there are other threads to choose from. I do not appreciate the snark directed at other thread participants.

If we could keep things on topic and not make it personal, that would be lovely.

You haven't actually posted anything yourself, nor (from what I can see) have you even so much as thanked any of the other contributing posters in this conversation for what they've brought to the table. So far, all I've seen you do is criticize.

But... not all criticism is without merit.

So I went back and counted all of the posts so far in this thread that were of butch-appreciating content to actually check your claim, as I like to think of myself as a fair minded person and wanted to see how the numbers shook out.

Literally half of the posts don't even mention a gender. Half. A whole 11 out of the 22 posts so far do not mention feminine pronouns or refer to a butch as specifically a woman.

Furthermore, several of the quotes here are by rather well known trans and non-binary butches. Ivan Coyote identifies as trans and non-binary. S. Bear Bergman is an out and proud trans man married to another out and proud trans man. And Leslie Feinberg... well, there shouldn't even be a need for an introduction.

If you cannot see that this thread is on the whole inclusive of butches of all stripes, then I don't know what to tell you.

So, if you still cannot see your particular flavour of butch represented here, that's not my or anyone else's problem. You either need to post something productive in keeping with the original guidelines of the thread which does represent what you want to see, or you need to stop derailing it.

If you are so aggrieved to see people expressing appreciation for butches which aren't 100% exactly like yourself and if you're not going to further this thread, then, frankly, I would respectfully ask you to bow out.

I'm not going to discuss this again.

I just re-read Stone Butch Blues last week. What a poignant, heart-wrenching novel. I believe it has every feeling a butch has ever had in that book, and a lot of ones that femmes have too. Between that, and Medusa's new site banner (which pulls at my heart every time I come to the site), and this wonderful thread started by Femmadian (thank you!), I am not only basking in the glow of butch appreciation, but also feeling so grateful for the butches who came before me (and also the amazing femmes and trans people). Over coffee today, I asked my (femme) wife to tell me why she is attracted to me as a butch woman and here’s what she said.

Me- What’s the general attraction to a butch woman?

Her- there’s a way in which certain Butches carry themselves that I relate to. A strength, a confidence , an attitude. By & large a butch rejects the rigidity of the role of the “ideal woma” and how she should be in the world.



Me- Can you say more?
Her- Their external appearance
I like their gestures and mannerisms. Not fem, not Girly , it’s in the butch attitude.You just know it when you see it.
They walk in the world unafraid in the same ways that men do.
There’s a “manliness” (for lack of a better word) about them in the sense that they say what they think, they own the ability to outwardly flex what they feel inside.
Me- anything else you’d like to add?
Her- I have a powerful attraction to that type of woman.
She doesn’t wear make up, she’s not prim and proper, she just is.
I like how they dress, the way they style their hair and even how they walk.
I don’t want the penis yet I’m attracted to the “mannish” qualities along with an ability to listen and to be sensitive.
Me- She then preceded to explain herself further by reminding me of a real life example in our own lives to expand on why she loves me as a butch woman.
She said ” As a femme, I might be walking downtown somewhere and want to go down a street but change my mind if it looks shady and ultimately decide to take an alternative route. When I’m with you, we head straight down that street and in fact, you walk on the outside and scan for possible threats the entire way.You look strong, you’re walking with purpose and I feel secure and protected”.
