View Full Version : Poll: Do you have a tattoo?
Just curious to see what the composition of folks on the site have some ink or not!
Of course, if you don't have any (like me), you could add to why and, if you do, please feel free to share the motivation.
I don't have any b/c I can't stand the thought of something permanent being on my skin. I do admire some of the art I've seen on others, though!
Vote and let's see--have more members been inked than not?
Just curious :)

I have 5 ( you can see them here: http://www.butchfemmeplanet.com/forum/showthread.php?t=701)
They all have specific meaning and I designed them all myself:
The ram and metal dog are my two zodiacs. (these were my first and I did them because I wanted to at least try once to see if I liked it or not..)
Linus, on my neck, kinda self-explanatory.
The crest with the sword represents my family crest with motto (translated, literally, means courage towards the summits). The sword's hilt is that of the Acadian Cross. (to honor my family and where I am from)
The flag with the shield represent my nationality (Canadian) and heritage (Acadian)
The Michelle, Ma Belle is a tribute to my mom. The white ribbon, with her year of birth and death, is a rememberence of violence against women (since my mom was a victim of this). The song is written by her favourite band/artist. The frog is a symbol of her french-ness and her collection of frogs while the quill highlights her creative side as well as her translation ability (she was a translator and ran her own successful business as such). This was done to remember my mom in a positive manner. It was freeing and the most painful tattoo I ever got (nearly passed out). Oddly enough, it reminded me of the relationship I had with my mom: meaningful but oh so frustrating. And a tribute to the person she was.

I read this and thought of my dad and how red his face turned when he noticed part of a tattoo sticking out from top of my tee shirt when I was just 21. The first thing he said was, I'll never be able to be buried in a Jewish cemetery. Stubborn me said good because I was going to be cremated.....yes, strike two with my dad. I now own 3 very old tattoos from my rebel days of defying dad.

My rabbi told me that there is actually no prohibition to being buried in a Jewish cemetary if you have tattoos. Cremation well yes that is a deal breaker. I do not have any tattoos though.

I have three. My first is a rose tattooed over my heart; as it was my great grandmother's favorite flower. My second is my boxer Chelsea's paw print with her name under it on my left thigh....getting ready to do my right thigh with Miranda's paw print; my boxer I lost last April. My third is a tattoo that says "Butch", on my right hip, just above the wasteline of my boxers. :winky:

I have many Jewish friends who have tattoos. I have several myself.
We are not prohibited from being buried in the Jewish cemetary.
The Torah states that it is prohibited and I think being a Jew with tattoos depends on your beliefs, i.e., are you Orthodox, Conservative, Reform, Reconstructionist?
My Turkish Jew grandmother totally did not approve of my cousin and his tattoos (she may have spoken sternly at him in some Ladino expletives :))
He is older than I and she never knew I had any...she has died...however she did not disown him or love him any less :D

Yep, I have tats. Love them! Mine are symbolic and represent an era , an event or are representations of my character and my interests.
I'll post my two faves in the gallery.
Love tats and am always thinking about adding. I've waited for years before committing to them. Not because I'm hesitant about the permanence of them, but because I tend to work either the design or the placement of the art I've chosen until I'm satisfied with the final decision (placement and art).
I cant say enough about consultations with the artist prior to sitting for your piece. Placement, size, color (or not) and an artists ability (is it suited for the piece you want?) all dictate a certain amount of time before the actual event !

I have 4. 3 of which are small, homemade tatts I gave myself in h.s. The only professional tattoo I have is around my right ankle. A vine with 4 lavendar roses. I got it in college after writing an article about our local tattoo shops for the student newspaper.

I have one tattoo that is very small and a bit too girly (even for me) and it was chosen from random art. It really doesn't hold much meaning for me either. For this reason, I'm in the midst of trying to decide if I'd like another. If so, it will most definitely be something that reflects who I am and what my soul is about. Oh yes, it will also be inked by an amazing femme artist that I know.

I talked indepth about my tats and my plans here (http://www.butchfemmeplanet.com/forum/showpost.php?p=49618&postcount=19):
I do admit to having mine in places that make me forget about them at times.
One additional tattoo I'd like to get is (and I know this sounds odd) but an ornate spoon in honor of my late grandmother. She collected them, and I would pick up these little spoons for her when I traveled. After she died, I took over her collection.

I have one tat. I was 18 years old, in Job Corp, and drinking with other butches. I knew I did not want to get it but I was young, stupid and wanted the acceptance of my peers. Of course the tat was the name of a femme in my life at the time. I always keep it covered. It was a home job and really has no special meaning. I looked into getting it removed but the cost is prohibitive.

Duh! Yes, I have one more. I got this not too many years ago. Long story that goes back about 25 years. The jest of it is that I was at a family reunion and I took three of my nieces with me. We all got a very small five point star on our backs near our shoulders. This one I never see because of where it is and I do not regret it. It has very much sentiment and meaning attached to it.

Yep, I have 3 tatts and no desire for any more. I got all 3 done many, many years ago when I was serving in the Marine Corps in the late 70's - early 80's. Back then, the Marine Corps' regulation for tattoos (for Women Marines) was that you could have tatts, but they couldn't be visible while you were in uniform. So, mine don't show unless I want them to. Of course, now I can go shirtless, like any other guy, so 2 of mine show when I don't have a shirt on. The other one....well, not so much. :winky:
I'm not sorry I got/have the ones I have.....I just don't think I want any more.

This doesn't surprise me and I've noticed it myself. I think, for many in our community, they have had to hide who are they are...who they love...for so long that the need to show the people in their world or even THE world who and what they are....whatever that may be...just bursts out from inside them in the form of ink. The need to be seen....be heard...is too much to hold inside.
Just my pennies for this thought. :)

I have six tattoos.
I got my first tattoo down in NC in 1997.
I got my last tattoo during our first visit to Iceland in 2008.
Inner forearm ~ a black panther (I love animals esp. cats)
Back of neck ~ the Japanese Kanji symbol that means Rebellion
(this is an accurate description of how I live my life)
Shoulder blade ~ the Phoenix bird (based on the myth)
(2) Right bicep ~ one is a tribal design focusing on the ying/yang and the other
is the Icelandic country code (IS) and our age (30) when we visited.
Iceland was my first international trip and Laerkin and a friend went to celebrate the three of us turning 30. (IS30)
Left bicep ~ a custom drawn design by a friend. It is a labrys with a snake wrapped around the handle. It has a lot of details relating to the LGBT community.

Actually, being a Gen-Xer myself, almost everyone I have dated (femmes) have been Gen-X, and NONE of them had tattoos! And it doesn't matter to me whether or not the person I am dating has tattoos, so it really is a "by chance", thing...

I have two.
One on my left shoulder. It's the moon phases in a circle with a triple moon symbol in the middle. The full moon of the triple moon has a star in it - making a pentacle. It's in the shape of a stone disk - a symbol of my unwavering faith in the Goddess and Her mysteries. I plan to get some flowers around it - possibly roses, mint, or lavender - they are some of my favorites.
The second is a large back tattoo. It's in my mid-back and in a cameo-style. It's the Phantom of the Opera, inspired by the book - so he looks more like a skeleton. One side of his body has a wing, since he's called "The Angel of Music" and in his other hand, making the rest of the oval - is a noose or the punjab lasso - another one of his symbols. Below him is Christine in silloette. She has the appearance of ectasy, with her head back and flowing hair. She also has her hands bound behind her - a symbol that she is bound to the music and the Phantom. Below her is a large rose and a chain of roses radiate outward, framing the bottom half of the cameo. The top half is not framed yet. I haven't decided between more roses, "The Phantom of the Opera", or "Music of the Night".

Yes, I have 10 tatts, but three roll into one making my right shoulder cap and two go together to make one around my left ankle. The rest are single tatts. I love getting tattoos, I love the way the tattoo gun sounds, the way it feels while I'm getting work done...guess you could say I"m a pain junkie.
All of my artwork has special meaning to me and I can tell you exactly what was going through my mind and what was going on in my life when I got each and every tatt.

I love my tattoos... love them. I have three that spread across my shoulders and into my ribs. They are three of my most trusted and amazing power animals. I have words written down my spine, which will eventually become the "magic" writing in the tree I am getting. I have found an artist to outline my tree while working in my tats on my shoulders/back. I have the top of my right arm done with Ganesha which will be the topper for "the arm of graffiti". And then I want.... see it will never end. I only want my arms and my entire back covered. Only that much...

I have one and it is on my right ankle. It is my children's initials, intertwined to look like symbols. To some people, it looks Asian, to other it looks Tibetan. Very few people have ever figured out what it is. Once I tell them, they see the letters-almost immediately.
The significance behind it speaks for itself.
There is a pic of it in the Femme Feet thread in the Femme Zone area.

No tats but only because I can never decide on what I would have done.
They are rather costly, and a permanent thing it's no easy choice for me.
Not to forget my gemini traits mean even when I have settled on one my mind changes so fast that it no longer is settled.

It took me years to decide on the one tattoo I have. It's on the base of my neck and it's Kanji for something the English language doesn't have an expression for. In general, it means a protected innocence or, if one wishes to simplify it further, it's about as close as one can come to "little girl" in Kanji. I had it verified by two Japanese speaking people (I was really nervous to end up with "Eat At Joe's" in Kanji permanently on my body).
I have two more things I would love to have put on my skin, but I cannot decide where. The one I have is so perfectly 'me' and looks so elegant in it's placement, I just feel like I would somehow ruin it by putting another tattoo elsewhere (OCD is special). I will probably always have just this one... but I love it so.
i have one on my right gastronemius semitendinosis... LOL! my right calf.
the frame is a butterfly with the face of a lion.
my metaphorical theme is 'fragile, yet fierce.'

Tattoos can become shriveled and unrecognizable, but they tell a story. Mine tell many stories. How they came to be on my body, and sometimes stories of the artists themselves. I have several done by some of the biggest names in tattoo artistry of their eras. It wasn't their best work, by any stretch of the imagination. Yes, they are faded. Most of them were done when I was 17, illegally, but that's a whole 'nother story.
Sun worship has faded most of the color and what remains are the outlines. And the memories of a bygone era.

I have two. The first one is a heart with initials. I got it to show my love for a wonderful woman that I spent 8 years with. I was in my twenties, The second one is a cute lil devil and I got it for my 60th birthday to remind me to enjoy life and be playful. My daughter went with me and got the same tatoo-- hers is on the top of her foot (ouch) and mine is on my arm.

In clouds beneath her the word "familia"....my highest feeling. On my back is Mary her hand over her heart. On my right side is Bear....My earth medecine. A sweetgrass blade band around with two feathers.....lots and lots of bamboo. On my back is a coconut tree with the sea and a breaching small whale. All black ink.

I do like artistic tats on others. I admire the intricacy of the work and still find tribals on well-toned biceps rather hot.
That said, I never had any interest in getting one for myself and as already mentioned, I have seen them become almost as though they were faded parchment paper on elderly folk.
I guess by the time one is 80 or so, it does mark the history of ones life, regardless.

Right ankle ~ Heart with rainbow colors
Left ankle ~ Fleur DiLis for New Orleans, got it after Katrina
Left wrist ~ Infinity knot in color
earlobes are tatted too
Oh yeah Syr's pawprint is tatted on my backside, She signed the word MINE under it. Syr's boi is a tattoo artist and did that one, so it's extra meaningful!
I'm looking to finally get the one for my right wrist, I know what I want I just have to design it.

For those that are mentioning the fading and reshaping of tats as we age, you are absolutely right. What looks and feels good on 20 year old skin is not going to look and feel exactly the same at 40 or 60 or beyond.
In this day and age of uncertainty, one very old, very wise and very tattooed woman once mentioned to me that, no matter what happens to her in her life and who she meets, they will always remember her.
Tats help us express ourselves and make us memorable. We wear them like jewelry adorning our bodies and how we 'wear' them often determines how they are perceived. They mark events in our lives and the additions and loss of people and give others fodder for conversation, be it positive or negative.
And, Heaven forbid, help to identify us in a life/death situation.
I may or may not love them just a little.

I love tattoos, having them and looking at others to admire. I have three:
1. on my left forearm a stone sun with an angel inside holding the earth.
2. on my right bicep a large lattice work of stone with two faces (comedy and tragedy) and fall leaves in the background
3. a copy of a Michael Parkes print is on my left bicep. I call it Beauty, Chaos and Play. It shows a ballerina, Beauty, dancing on a ribbon being controlled by a figure I call "Chaos" and play represented by a kitten with a ball on the ribbon. Chaos holds one end and the other end is on fire.

I have one I designed, and got at the age of 50. Upper left shoulder, it is a heart shaped design with 1/2 gay pride colors, and 1/2 leather pride colors.
I have designed my next tatt, and hope to get it within the next couple of months. It will be on my right shoulder, a pink triangle rimmed in black, with the oriental symbol of women in the middle in deep black. Simple, but I hope beautiful. Very meaningful to me, though.
(Since I will be turning 60 in Feb, I want to get it done before then)

This is the closest thing I have seen to what I want, placement and size. I love the way this tattoo fits the curves of her body. The one I am designing would be sensuous, and playful, rather than fierce. Almost a pin-up puma. With peonies instead of roses. This is by Chris Sawyer of 808 Tattoos on the Big Island. Where else to go but to visit Pele, for a tattoo? Below is the Peony style I want.

I have 4.
My first was a goddess which was supposed to go above my breast, basically it would have been under my bra strap, but it is practically under my chin after a lost argument with my tattoo artist who I would never recommend as he has to much ego for his own good. Bastard
I was a little gun shy after that so it took me a long time to get my next one, my family was in town; my girls, my brother and my dad and they called me from the tattoo parlour. They were getting tattoos so I went and joined them and I have my family twig on my outside right ankle which I will be adding two more leaves to very shortly. Two grandbabies being born in the next couple of weeks.
When my partner died my girlfriend and I had high heels with the Finnish word for 'Bad Girl' tattooed on our asses as he always called us that.
When I was in Hawaii last year I had a Sea Turtle tattooed on my inside right ankle to remind me to slow down.
I will be getting my back done soon, with a group of naked women dancing under the full moon.

Fresh ink this week. Ink for me is personal -an expression of who you are and what you love....they are a "part" of you - so should represent ALL of you...for me it is (more than) just (having ink)...and there are times when you are blessed with great inspiration - so, if you have meaningful work done then they become a road map of your life....your story ... not (just) another tattoo for its own sake....for me it is a creative expression....your inner self being worn on the canvas of your skin.

I remember that episode. I think a tattooist is an artist like any other and it doesn't mean they have to be inked themselves as long as they are passionate about what they put on others.
I have a shooting start on my hip
a butterfly on my back

The one I am watching now is called Needles and Pins. Tattoo artist Grace Neutral, travels the world, going to different tattoo shops, talking to owners and clients.
She is in Las Vegas in this episode and I learned that Vegas has gone from 20 to 200 tattoo shops in 10 years.
There is even a 24-hour one called Precious Slut.
Great show, some beautiful tattoos.
Grace is heavily tatted herself, with some interesting and artistic ones. She is from the U.K.

I think I posted in this thread years ago but I have new additions!
I have several tattoos and all of them are easily covered by everyday clothing. I work in a white collar environment and don't see that changing any time soon so it's important to me that I can wear regular dresses and skirts and tops without too much fuss.
I DID get two large feathers (one on each upper arm) 2 years ago and those were a big deal for me because they are the first tattoos I've gotten that I can look down and see. Still, I can wear tops with a half sleeve and they are covered.
My work is actually quite liberal when it comes to tattoos, piercings, hair color, etc. but only for the programmers or engineers who never see clients. I regularly meet with clients and attorneys so I definitely have to cover up my arms on those days.
If you count the cover ups I have, I have a total of 8 tattoos:
1 on each upper arm
1 tiny tat on my right shoulder
1 large back piece that covers 2 old tattoos
1 lower back piece (not quite a tramp stamp because it's a little higher)
and 1 in a private place that only my lover needs to know about
All of my ink means something to me. Even the pieces I got when I was very young. Luckily, I was smart enough not to get anything I regret like a Wylie Coyote holding a liquor bottle or a Confederate flag or something that would make me want to gouge my eyes out.
By far, my feathers on my arms are my most spiritual pieces. I got them at a time in my life when I had lost an enormous amount of weight, my beloved Gracie had died, and there were some serious shifts in significant relationships going on. I was re-evaluating everything. Putting a tourniquet on my bleeding wounds and slicing off the barnacles of old tumors dragging me down.
I guess it's not a huge deal to some but i knew that ink on my arms would change me in significant ways. It was like my way of saying to myself "I give you permission to be visible. All of your struggles. All of your hope. And yes, even all of your desires."
I have one more tattoo in mind but the time is not right. It will cover up the very first tattoo I ever got, both as a symbol of a new chapter in my life and as my final piece of ink and final resting place with myself. That one will also forever bind me to the most significant person in my life so I guess you could say I want it to be absolutely perfect.
Loving all the ink talk!

Every once in awhile I do think about it though...

I have one "right of passage" tattoo I got when I was 18. Black rose with thorns - 1980s tribute to Motley Crue. Lol Reminds me of my metal chick days.
No plans to get anymore.

Not really... To me it feels like a pin prick. But that's my opinion.

I don't have a tattoo yet but I am always pondering the thought of if I did what would I get and where....that always is the struggle.
Do tons of research on what you want and the tat artist as well. Look at portfolios and their years of experience if you want a big piece.

I was just gathering the courage to find out what it's like to have a tattoo ('cause the notion of needles in my skin lots doesn't appeal, but something pretty on the skin does) when I got put on blood thinners, and that''s game over for getting tatooed. I had in mind cherry blossom up my right arm, and a cute dragon on my left shoulder. Might see if one of those places that does transfers that stick to your skin can make something for me, one day.

Do people with those back pieces stand with their backs to a mirror holding a hand mirror so they can admire the piece or even be reassured that it's still there?
I'm seeing masses and masses of what I call "wallpaper" tattoos on kids these days and endless cultural appropriations almost always meaningless to the bearer.
I've taken to giving extreme advice: if you want a prison tat, go to prison first.

How can I explain to you the unexplainable? I knew a girl of 17 who for her own reasons..designed an elf girl in chains ..it took her a year to finish..tattoos are imprints..meaningful to the bearer and unexplainable to those who may catch a glimpse of them and wonder...it is not meant for you to see and yet if you do, consider yourself privileged..wonder about it's mystical connection to the bearer..do not allow yourself to dwell on mean themes but instead at least celebrate that in this day and age..the young have the freedom to express themselves and their magic however they choosehttps://vignette.wikia.nocookie.net/lotr/images/d/dd/100_beautiful_arwen.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20110313201140it's beautiful

I always wondered if there would be regret for those who got ink in noticeable places. What are they going to think when they're 50? Well, I just turned 50 and got one on my forearm. Noticeable. I'm not worried about what I'm going to think when I'm 80.
I got a tiny Snoopy on my ankle when I was 18. At this pace, my third will be in a nursing home.

At this rate no-one need worry about what their tats will look like (etc) when they are 80....almost every other 80-year-old will have them too.
Adding " lol": in case anyone again mistakes me for a deep and serious thinker on this topic.
Which, btw, is becoming a serious set of topics...the ownership of one's own skin; the diff between tats and ripped jeans; indelibility; etc

The newer tattoos are something to behold. The artists are really taking it to another level these days. That being said, I enjoy looking at them but would never have one myself. Maybe I'm just too fickle. I know that for some, tattoos help them tell their story. That's one reason I would be reluctant to get inked. I don't necessarily want my narrative spelled out to me or for me. I like a life that's a blank page; dynamic, ever-changing. Just one long shaggy dog story unencumbered by arc or resolution.

I have no regrets at all.
Yup.... each forearm, chest, collarbone, legs
I like them spread out. Do not want sleeves or to have them bunched together.

I do: just one - she's a mermaid - she lives on my right shoulder, under my bra strap and she replaces the 40s pin-up girl that used to be there.
I'm actually going to have some work done on my tattoo; hopefully before my birthday next year. I'm going to have something entirely different. It's going to be a heart with barbed wire around it, and maybe a special shade of ruby red for the heart and the blackest ink one can get for the barbed wire.

I've a hard time deciding on what will be the first piece and/or deciding on an artist. There's like infinate number of possibilities for both.

One on each upper arm, both are women with Maori inspired designs. Each have significant life meaning, as they should be.
Thinking seriously about the 'scarring' designs. Anybody here have any?
