View Full Version : The Bathroom Door

You're home alone.
You have to use the bathroom.
Is the door open or closed?
Please select the choice that is most often applicable, I'm sure that every once in a while the most staunch door-closeder leaves it open, but I'm looking for the general response.
And yes, the poll is anonymous.

If home alone (ah, the luxury) I always leave it open.
But then, I suppose I'm not actually alone, because almost always three people join me:
* two mewing cats
* one sweet pup

FINALLY with an empty nest, the door stays open. Sometimes I even forget and leave it open when I have company. I guess just because I'm so use to living alone now.
I see your hinney, so bright and shiny, it makes me giggle to see it wiggle.:tease:

I can't do anything in private anymore. I have 3 cats and a dog that follow me from room to room. And that includes going to the bathroom. :daddy: = takes on a whole new meaning

Ah yes, we have 5 cats who seem to have near panic attacks if any door is closed to them, especially the bathroom.

Alone its open. Not alone its closed. If you don't close close the door here then a cat will push it open (usually wide open) and then well, its open. And what's more annoying is one of the cats will push it open, stare for five seconds then leave. And they never close the door behind them.

My cat often has a fit if I close the door. I think he sees it as uninterrupted petting time. :nerd:

Damn, you've got yourself some rude cats there!
Then again...it sucks even more if it is your dog that pushes open the door and then drops a ball at your feet....looking ever so hopeful...

Usually our bathroom door is closed when no one is in it because we have a cat that thinks the toilet paper is her personal play toy when it's hanging there (sometimes, someone forgets to close the door) and she's teaching the younger cats. So, when I go, I usually leave the door open and the cats run in and out of the bathtub as they chase each other. Play time can be fun for them and me when I supervise, lol.

Even if I'm home without other humans, the dogs are usually there and they like to help me go to the bathroom. I understand, as they are experts in this field, but I specialize in excreting in the toilet, which they are not entirely boned up on. So, to eliminate unnecessary advice and chastising, I close the door.

Door closes only when guests are present. Mare and I aren't shy that way.
Ember (prince kitty) likes to come in and guard me while I do my business. I'm buying him a little hoodie that reads " SECURITY " on the back. He does a great job. I haven't been assaulted on the toilet yet.

Since I live alone. I leave it open....
And sometimes if Simon has missed me he will come in there and sometimes he just sits in the door way waiting on me :)
If company was there well the door would be shut.

always open whether i want it that way or not.
Long time ago, I was in the washroom utilizing the facilities, and the doorbell rang, my kids went running answered the door, (i could hear they were just down the hall) It was the UPs man and he asked if the parent was there as an adult needed to sign..I heard the children say yes, cmon in (thinking how proud i was, they had learned to invite guests in and take them to the living room) until the door to the bathroom opened and there stood the UPS guy, kids told him i was in there and to go ahead in :rubberducky:
After that I never bothered to close the bathroom door again, why bother!

I semi close the door, but it never latches.. (I do make an effort if the kid has company) and then my molly has to come in for her.. *Alone* time with mom... I continue to explain that it's supposed to be MY alone time, but she ignores me...
The other cat's pretty well leave me alone.. except the brat cat.. She's almost always at least within 10 feet of me... or just out of petting range...

Our cats have this same weird bathroom fixation, too . The middle child pushed her way into the bathroom today (my fault for not fully closing the door), proceeded to meow loudly at me three times, then turned around and walked out. I guess she came in to yell at me about something. :simplelaugh:

Unless company is here, the door stays open. My dogs would have a complete fit if I closed the door - oh my goodness the HUMANITY!!!!! It must be like - the end of the world for them. We don't even want to go into what happens when I just go out for 2 minutes to get the mail!!!!!!!

It's to the point where I start to get nervous if Ember doesn't follow me in.... I worry someone is going to attack me without my bodyguard present.
Once in a while I get to go without him seeing me - but - if he's passing by and sees I'm in there, he'll come running. lol ... it's too cute. (And of course I'll say something like "hurry up, hurry up, I'm almost done....)
My Charlie (rest his soul) did not like closed doors. He would scratch, stick his paws underneath the door, yell, complain and then give me attitude if I didn't let him in. The look on his face when I would take a bath was priceless.
Animals certainly have a bathroom fascination.

Mmmhmmm... I would have to leave all of the doors slightly cracked so he could have access. If I closed it all the way, he'd sit there and cry (very loudly mind you), until you opened it. Then, he'd peek in and walk away.
Creep.
Somehow he knew the front door needed to remain closed. But he would occasionally try and test me to see if I would open it for him. (He hated to be outside).
What is it with the four-footed furry ones and the bathroom? Sometimes a person can hardly move in there for all the bodies... yes, the door has to be open, and yes the cats will open it if it's closed, unless we manage to latch it.
The dogs don't get to come in because the litterboxes are in there, but if they could, they would.
At least I don't feel so bewildered now, knowing that our cats are not the only ones who have to supervise! Sheesh, if we tried to pet them while they were in the litterbox they'd be HIGHLY offended, but it never seems to sink in when I say "this is my litterbox; I don't WANT to pet you right now!"
They just sit there and stare at me until I give up and pet them, lol....

The door is open and the fur kids think that it is a perfect time for love.
This also applies if a bath is involved, especially a bubble bath.

If he isn't home, I tend to leave the door ajar, because if not.. my cats have conniptions ... :)

all this talk about cats and bathrooms...
edgrr... my SOB cat... can open the bathroom door... even when latched...
then his favorite thing...
i dont know how to describe it... but...picture if you will... your trows hanging about mid calf... he likes to get in that little pocket and lay down...
he stays there til he hears the paper... then he peaks out to make sure it is time for me to stand...
hops out... looks back and waits on my to finish... he likes to watch also while the water swirls around and down when ya flush...
edgrr is a strange animal...
i had a house guest... he tried this on her as soon as she arrived at my house... when i remembered to warn her she assured me that they had already figured it all out...

I prefer the bathroom door closed and locked no matter what. Comes from growing up in the "no modesty/no privacy" house...lol My parents would probably be nudists if they could. My house was nicknamed "Nekkid Land" by my high school friends. It's nothing unusual to see my mom cooking Christmas dinner in nothing but her "I Cook Better Naked" apron, or them nude sunbathing on the deck. I still have to call ahead to make sure they put on clothes when I'm bringing folks with me...lol! So due to that, they never really saw an issue with barging in during bathroom time (whether you were using the bathroom or bathing). For example, if you were on the toilet they would come right in and sit on the edge of the tub to discuss your day. Or if you were bathing, my mother would just come in and use the restroom and "chat". Really frustrating, because we had MORE than one bathroom. I had my own, but it didn't seem to matter to them...lol And it's still the same today. sheesh... Thanks to them, I prefer complete privacy (other than pets...lol).

When I am living alone, I leave the door open. When I have guests or partner living with me, I close it for privacy. When I had a dog and cat, I had to allow them to go with me into the bathroom and shut the door for my privacy when someone elses was there. The animals hated me being in there if they couldn't come in. I don't know what it is about the bathrooom and animals, but they seem to want to be in there when you're in there. LOL

I cannot stand to be in the bathroom with the door closed...it's just too small of a space. So mine is open whether showering or otherwise even if/when I have a partner. When a guest is here, well that's a different matter and I close it then.
My dog, Bear is trained to stay out of the bathroom, so he kinda does the hallway hover waiting for me to finish so I can throw whatever toy he has brought to me.
If I take a tub bath, he wants to give me all sorts of emotional support because he understands that this is not a fun activity. It's sweet. Lol!

At first glance of this topic it did not sound that interesting. I admit I was very wrong!!! I gave up shutting the door a long time ago unless company is here;human company. I have five cats as well and they love to hold me captive when in the bathroom. Talk about multi-tasking; petting the furr babies while doing the business. I have laughed so hard reading this thread about what pets do while they are in the bathroom with their human parents. Sometimes when taking a bubble bath I will mess with their heads by tossing bubbles on their backs when they are not looking. They swiftly look around as if to say "wtf"! Love all you animal lovers and your stories!

Imo, the porcelain throne is a place for quiet reflection...
Hence the statue:

Very easy to reflect quietly when no one is there, so door stays open :p If people are there, then obviously it's more difficult, lol Seriously though, doors are to keep people out when you don't want them there, so if there's no people there's no reason to close the door, so I keep it open.
Like others with pets, my cat always likes to follow me to the washroom for some inexplicable reason...particularly awkward when she comes and sits right by my feet, at which point I give her the "are you serious?" look and she continues to purr contentedly:blink: She could be off sleeping in my closet having nothing to do with me, but the minute I go to the washroom she comes running as though it's the event of the day lol

I keep it open unless we have company. We have 5 cats very adept at opening doors (two are polydactl) and a kitten that is sure to learn from them. Plus if we don't keep it open or they can't get it open, they get all pouty and meowy and probably plot our demise...lol
