We will be moving to the North Tampa area the first week of June! I look forward to meeting some great people down there and soaking up the sun!
I am from CT and my wife is from NJ... it amazes us that we have a grapefruit tree in our back yard! I mean, seriously, how cool is THAT?
Is anyone close to the Tampa area? We are off 275 near Busch Gardens.

Mrs. Strutt
06-21-2010, 07:41 AM
Sam - you will need to grow some gills, lol. At least here on the west-central coast, we get the sea breeze to help with the heavy humidity. The water in the air just lingers in land-bound cities like Orlando.
Cowboi - I'm glad you enjoyed your visit. Humidity notwithstanding, this is a beautiful state with many beautiful places to go. Boca Grande is only a couple of hours from us and I really should visit myself someday. But if I'm down that way, I am usually bypassing Boca Grande on my way to Sanibel or Captiva.

No damage thusfar on the central west coast that I know of, other than the fact that a lot of folks here depend on fishing and using the waterways for income. I do know the oil has hit Pensacola Beach and it isn't a pretty sight. :( The good people of Florida are fairly used to rebuilding after hurricanes and tornadoes...but how does one rebuild from this sort of disaster?

Nothing in the Pinellas county area (yet). Mr. Strutt and I live in Gulfport, which is on the intercoastal waterway right next door to St. Petersburg. Although we are told the threat of our coastline being directly affected is low, our tourism and fishing industries have still taken a big hit.
I keep thinking about that buffoon from Alaska who said this is "not an environmental disaster," just a "natural phenomenon." I'd like to hold the son-a-of-bitch by his ankles and dip his head and shoulders into this "natural phenomenon."

Hi Everyone,
Ben and I live in the Winter Haven area. We're right in the middle of FL about an hour from the outskirts of Tampa. The oil disaster is breaking my heart. Last night my daughter told me that soon we will be getting "oily rain". If the oil evaporates and comes down with the rain, the whole world could be affected. A disaster, but defintetly not a natural one.
Nice talking to you.

after i finished pet sitting today, i took a new route home and marvelled at the availability of edible landscapes- just go outside and find something good to eat. southen magnolias have always been an amazing sight, as are the azalea, and hibiscus. there's a hint of danger [in my mind] because one never knows when a snake might cross your path, or an alligator appears in the lake.

Well of course you can Ben, the more the merrier. Last year on caladesi island they had a big ole pride party and there is hotel there. I would have to look into it... I would assume rooms would have to be book soon. Maybe someone will offer to help me do some research n planning if there is gonna be a good crowd . I'm going either way ... so let's make a list who is interested. Or who is tentative but remember its a weekend event. And there's so much to do... so planning is a must.

We could always scout out Postcard Inn down on St Pete beach or one of the clearwater beach hotels cause jolly trolley runs to Dunedin on weekends.

Yes we certainly need to check all options , do you know when pride is this year? They had a big to do last oct on Caladesi for pride.. not sure where to search I was just checking it on web. Kellyschicaboom.com is what is in downtown dunedin, but I am not sure if pride will be downtown or the island..

It's downtown best source of info right now is the NorthPinellas Pride facebook. The website will be up and running very shortly. It is in downtown for the main event but I think there will be a beachday. The next comittee meeting is May 30th I believe at Besa Del Sol. It's expanding. Last year it was the weekend before St Pete Pride which is last saturday in June. This year they moved it to end of October to one not compete and two be more comfortable. I think they are thinking this way the GSAs can participate too and maybe no issues from the church group that tried to stone us out at Honeymoon.

With any luck yes I will be. I am even thinking of volunteering about it. Last year I was disappointed by the beachday but the parties at the hotel were cool and downtown was gayer then normal that Friday at Blur.:D

Hi Peeps! Wow! Look at y'all posting. We're alive! We're alive!
Welcome Mickman. This pride thing sounds good to me - October is a great time for it. I'm in Long Beach Cali right now for the Long Beach pride which is this week-end. My BFF's girlfriend is on the planning committee. She has been coming home exhausted every day with details of that is coming.
Kat, I laughed at your "plans must be made" line. I am more of the spontaneous, last minute kind of person, but to go to pride I will be willing to make some plans. Yah! SOUNDS GREAT!
Smooches,
Keri

Hi,
I just tried the link and it worked for me. The existing link has good info on it. I assume more is coming when they finish construction. Sounds like fun. Hope some of us will be able to get together there. I don't live there, but had a few of us spent an evening with Kat in Dunedin awhile ago, and I fell in love with the town. Not too many places in Florida have gay rights, but Dunedin is one of them. I'm glad they are having pride there to support the town that supports us!!!

Good Evening everyone. I did not check out the link yet--half lazy half bc i saw it wasnt finished yet--so perhaps once its all up and posted we could start from there...find some hotels...maybe get an idea how many are really interested in going..maybe call around and see if theres a hotel willing to cut a deal for a block of rooms---not that Kats invite wasnting "inviting" but i need my damn space..:)
i think i speak for Jo as well in saying we would like to make a weekend of it(leisurely one) a lil planning a lil fly by our seats..not for sure about others with kids...not sure if we would bring ours....all things that should be considered since i know Ms Snow and Grant will have Worm by then..and altho its a few months away but my experience with queer folk is its never too early to start planning :)

speak for urself..most kids like me..im the one that will say "dont tell your parents" then when the parents find out i say...i tried to tell them but they wouldnt listen to me :)
i hope other weigh in on this..because we usually do take the boys with us whenever we go on little trips...however as far as i know we could leave them on their own for awhile and not worry that the hotel would burn down or the cops would be called....

Good Afternoon fellow Floridians...its a beautiful 80 degrees with a light breeze blowing down here on the Treasure Coast. I was wondering is anyone else following the trial of Casy Anthony that just started?.. I know it is a national broadcast, but i was wondering how people closer to home felt about it.
I am back at work-sorta-10-15 hrs a week at an hrly salary since the dr put me on a 10lb weight restriction, but luckily Workers Comp is still gonna pay me a % of my salary so im not as upset about it. Plus we get to go to the Bahamas after all. The kids are all excited about that.
hope everyones week is going good so far!

Hey Scoot:
I try to NOT watch things like this. It hits my heart.....that poor child is dead...SOMEONE somewhere knows what happened to little Caylee.. I am just sick to death of all the sensationalism and media attention she garners. Let Caylee R.I.P. is my sentiments.
I am glad your work is working out...not sure what happened to you...but good luck with it..and that is great WC is paying a % of wages to you!!! Times are tough all over for folks.
The Bahamas...wow I have never been there but would love to some day...with my special someone...<wink>...have a wonderful trip, too!!! Take lots of pics!!!
Have a great day yourself....Clay

Hello Floridians,
Can anyone please explain to me why there are fluorescent spray-painted and festively decorated bikes chained to telephone poles and fences beside roads all over central Florida?
They seem to be randomly scattered about and not denoting nearby bike trails or anything.
Just wondering if anyone else has seen this and has any idea why.
Thank you!

In Ontario those denote locations of fatal accidents involving victims on bikes. Hoping that's not the case in Florida on any large scale.

01-25-2014, 10:25 AM
Given their joyous presentations, I'd venture to say not. I had wondered that at first, too, though. As many as I've seen pop up recently, I imagine it would be all over the news that there was some sort of recent bike accident epidemic.
They are really fun looking, actually. I want to get on one and ride off into the sunset with it, lol.

OK, glad to hear it. Oddly enough, the commemorative bikes here are quite festive and colourful too...and far too numerous. I do hope you are right and this is just some group's way of reminding folks of the pleasures of biking. It's still early in the day and I'm sure some informed Floridian will be awake soon enough to give you an answer lol. Good luck
Jesse

The ones that are painted and decorated, (usually with flowers and such) are generally, as Collette said, locations of fatal bike accidents.
The ones that are painted solid orange, if there are any left, were used as a marketing ploy for a new fitness center called Orange Theory Fitness or something like that.
A couple of years before the orange ones, there were some blue ones making the rounds that were basically just put there by a couple of guys to give people something else to look at other than everyday stuff and to give them a reason to smile. They would move these bikes to new locations every few days. They were down in south Florida.
Then there are the eight multicolored mystery bikes. No one but the artist knows the reason for these supposedly.
This colored bike phenomena has been going on since early 2000 as far as I know. I think it's a great marketing strategy personally, and quite inexpensive to boot. :)

Thank you, Jesse! I appreciate you taking the time to answer my question.
I had no idea about any of this. How interesting! Now I'm going to have to look more closely at them in my travels to see exactly how many of each type there are around, but I have seen quite a few on my commute to work and around my apartment complex.
One of them is multi-colored with Hawaiian-style garlands all over it. I'm not sure how to categorize that one, but I will observe it more carefully next time.
