First Flower Grown in Space!

US astronaut Scott Kelly announced the historic news from the International Space Station

http://d.ibtimes.co.uk/en/full/14822...ower.jpg?w=736

A flower has bloomed in the zero gravity of space for the first time ever.

US astronaut Scott Kelly announced the historic news that a zinnia plant had flowered on the International Space Station (ISS) on his Twitter account, along with a photograph of an orange, 13-petalled flower.

“First ever flower grown in space makes its debut! #SpaceFlower #zinnia #YearInSpace,” he wrote, adding: “Yes, there are other life forms in space!”

A Nasa blog about the flowers, written before one had bloomed, said zinnias were chosen not for their beauty but to “help scientists understand how plants flower and grow in microgravity”.

Traveling through the upper midwest these last couple of days and man oh man, it is bitter bitter !@#% cold! It was -08 the other day in Minnesota. (THAT was the high) Read in the news that a young woman returning from a night of partying was found frozen on a sidewalk, only a couple of blocks from her house in Madison Wi.

It can not be emphasized enough to bring your fur friends inside, do not drink alcohol to excess, dress in layers and make lots of love in front of a fireplace on a (fake) bear rug. If one is in the financial position to purchase bird, squirrel, or deer food, please do. Many areas in this neck of the woods have 3-4 inches of ice on the ground for several weeks, our animal friends noticeably are having difficulty getting to their food.

Check on your elderly neighbors, hydrate, keep your vehicle's gas tank full.

If I sound like your dad or mom, well....so be it.

xo

This Dazzling Indoor Rainbow is Made From 60 Miles of Embroidery Thread.

http://www.slate.com/content/dam/sla...l-original.jpg

A spellbinding winter blues–busting indoor rainbow has appeared on the first floor of the Smithsonian’s Renwick Gallery in Washington. And while to the naked eye it might look like a grace note after a rainstorm or a multicolored beam of sunlight, this dazzling man-made sleight of hand is actually composed of 60 miles of embroidery thread strung up by hand according to a carefully plotted matrix to create the trompe l’oeil effect.*

http://www.slate.com/content/dam/sla...l-original.jpg

Part of the “Wonder” exhibition currently running until July 10, Gabriel Dawe’s “Plexus A1” was created especially for the Renwick Gallery, but it’s part of a numbered series called “Plexus,” variations of which are currently on view in Utah, Arkansas, and Denmark.

And I believed to be the cat's pajamas when I turned this into teacher. *shrug
