It is not time or opportunity that is to determine intimacy;-- it is disposition alone. Seven years would be insufficient to make some people acquainted with each other, and seven days are more than enough for others.

~Jane Austen

We must be the change we want to see.
Mahatma Gandhi

Love is everything it's cracked up to be. That's why people are so cynical about it. . . . It really is worth fighting for, being brave for, risking everything for. And the trouble is, if you don't risk everything, you risk even more.
~Erica Jong~

“To love at all is to be vulnerable. Love anything, and your heart will certainly be wrung and possibly broken. If you want to make sure of keeping it intact, you must give your heart to no one, not even to an animal. Wrap it carefully round with hobbies and little luxuries; avoid all entanglements; lock it up safe in the casket or coffin of your selfishness. But in that casket- safe, dark, motionless, airless--it will change. It will not be broken; it will become unbreakable, impenetrable, irredeemable.” - C.S. Lewis

“Loving is a feeling that brings both joy and pain to my heart. Joy from being with you, being filled with an emotion so deep and tender that no other feeling can compare. Pain from knowing that I'm so in love, that I'm more vulnerable than I've ever” - Author Unknown

“Who is the happiest of men? He who values the merits of others, and in their pleasure takes joy, even as though t'were his own.” - Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

Make conscientiousness and sincerity Your grand object. Have no friends not equal to Yourself. If You have done wrong, be not ashamed to make amends.

I had no idea that J. Austen was the author - I've heard this quote from time to time, over the years, and I appreciate the way she is able to convey this timeless principle.

A beautiful woman is like a wild rose....
Lovely and calm... but willing to draw blood in her defense.

Your worst enemy cannot harm you as much
as your own unguarded thoughts.
The Buddha

The greatest achievement is selflessness.
The greatest worth is self-mastery.
The greatest quality is seeking to serve others.
The greatest precept is continual awareness.
The greatest medicine is the emptiness of everything.
The greatest action is not conforming with the worlds ways.
The greatest magic is transmuting the passions.
The greatest generosity is non-attachment.
The greatest goodness is a peaceful mind.
The greatest patience is humility.
The greatest effort is not concerned with results.
The greatest meditation is a mind that lets go.
The greatest wisdom is seeing through appearances.
Atisha

Do not speak- unless it improves on silence.
Buddhist Saying

In what is seen, there should be just the seen;
In what is heard, there should be just the heard;
In what is sensed, there should be just the sensed;
In what is thought, there should be just the thought.
He should not kill a living being, nor cause it to be killed, nor should he incite another to kill.
Do not injure any being, either strong or weak in the world.
Sutta Nipata II,14

These teachings are like a raft, to be abandoned once you have crossed the flood.
Since you should abandon even good states of mind generated by these teachings,
How much more so should you abandon bad states of mind!

Conquer the angry man by love.
Conquer the ill-natured man by goodness.
Conquer the miser with generosity.
Conquer the liar with truth.
The Dhammapada

Thousands of candles can be lit from a single candle,
and the life of the candle will not be shortened.
Happiness never decreases by being shared.

Love and compassion are necessities, not luxuries.
Without them, humanity cannot survive.
H.H. The 14th Dalai Lama

Through violence, you may 'solve' one problem, but you sow the seeds for another.
H.H. The 14th Dalai Lama

If the love within your mind is lost and you see other beings as enemies, then no matter how much knowledge or education or material comfort you have, only suffering and confusion will ensue.
H.H. The 14th Dalai Lama

It is under the greatest adversity that there exists the greatest potential for doing good, both for oneself and others.
H.H. The 14th Dalai Lama

Know Now Then ~ ani

it's not so much that we got closer
it's that her face just got bigger
and by the time it was filling up my whole view
i figured my face had got bigger too
so i used it to try and sway her
say something to her
make my case
but my face
never had a chance
all along it was the wrong song and dance
i just stood there
without even a stance
helpless to her advance
and her retreat
backspace, delete

it wasn't so much that we fell in love as
my life just seemed to come down
to a slow walk on a straight line
between her smile and her frown
and maybe we never were as close
as we should have been
but i didn't know
what i know now then
yeah i didn't know what i
know now then

"How happy is the blameless Vestal's lot! The world forgetting, by the world forgot. Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind! Each pray'r accepted, and each wish resign'd"...

"Evey day you may make progress. Every step may be fruitful. Yet there will stretch out before you an ever-lengthing, ever-ascending, ever-improving path. You know you will never get to the end of the journey. But this, so far from discouraging, only adds to the joy and glory of the climb."
~Sir Winston Churchill

"Honor does not have to be defended."
~Robert J. Sawyer

A book is the only place in which you can examine a fragile thought without breaking it, or explore an explosive idea without fear it will go off in your face. It is one of the few havens remaining where one's mind can get both provocation and privacy.

~Edward P. Morgan

Books are the quietest and most constant of friends; they are the most accessible and wisest of counselors, and the most patient of teachers.

There is pleasure in new friendships, comfort in old ones, and sweet memories in those we’ve lost.

Gardening is an ancient and universal passion that enables you to remain rooted in the present but provides glimpses of the future as wisdom grows, wit blossoms, and ideas bear fruit.

Though no one can go back and make a brand new start, anyone can start from now and make a brand new ending.

The question isn't who is going to let me; it's who is going to stop me.

Rush Hour ~ Chrystos

waiting in the bus stop with a seat at least
when across the street a #7 Rainier jerked
to a belching screech so
my eyes rested on an extraordinarily
beautiful Black woman about our age
Her sloping cheekbones caught the light
in an amazing deep mulberry glow
I wanted to run through traffic
bang on the door as the bus groaned away
to tell her
You're the loveliest sight of my whole day
Thank you!

Staring down at my purple knees
I knew with such a hard ache
in my sore feet
that she'd just think
I was plum crazy

Hope Haiku ~ Chrystos

A young Black man
arguing passionately
with 3 white ones who are
not in favor of women's rights
