Okay, So here is my idea for my first wrangle.. Besame has volunteered to be my mailing person as to save the majority of participants $$ for shipping and avoid the international rates.

CD/ DVD Recycle Project.
Materials used is up to the artist but must contain some portion of a cd or dvd in part or whole. Some possible ideas could be from decorating one, smashing and making in to a mosaic, melting, cutting, carving the options are endless, and the choice is that of the artist! Also because they are extremely light, it should keep shipping costs low.
Here are some ideas from pinterest:

The theme is essentially to recycle, how ever that is covered in creating art out of the cd.

What do you think?

What do you think?

I think the idea is really creative. Would you just want one disc decorated from each person to each person or a set or collection?

I think it is best to leave it up to each participant to do what they would like using the some portion or the cd as a whole as they wish. If we were to say that each participant was to use one full cd for each person on the list, we are essentially assigning them to a certain way to do it, just decoration and that is exactly what I dont want to do, I am quite interested to see all the different ways that each of us might take this.
***Side note, doing it this way also allows each person to control how much they spend on this project, and I don't want it to be about money.

When you look through the ideas, and ideas you find of your own.. that one that jumps out to you that is really neat?!? Do that one! :)

Breathless 05-22-2016 01:47 AM

Okay so based on all the messages in private user CP, looks like this is a go..

Project: Recycle CD/DVD Project

1. Open signups 22/05/2016 -- full 10 days to sign up

2. Close signups 01/06/2016 -- by 8 pm MST

3. Project deadline for mailing out to Besame will be July 6, 2016. This will allow for a full 10 days of sign up, and 5 weeks of project time, as well as clearance of the holidays in both countries to get in to the mail. If more time is required, let me know and we can amend this.

4. The medium being used must contain either a cd or dvd as a whole, or a fragment of some sort with in the project, other materials used are at the artists chosing. I am totally open and leave each with free reign for their choice & creativity in fact I encourage it. The cd or dvd can be decorated, smashed to bits and used in a mosaic, or as part of a picture, or melted into something else? The options are limitless.

5. Each participant is to make at least one piece for each person on the final sign up list.. ie.. 6 people sign up, make 5 pieces.. one for each excluding self.

6. The theme of the project piece is at the choosing of the artist, as the recycling is expressed in turning the CD into something else.

7. I'm thinking that because this project is relatively inexpensive to make, I dont want to limit the number of participants. Average is usually 7 or 8 on previous projects up to 10, which is completely reasonable.

All typical rules are in play:

"For 2016, the rule is if one of our projects is received by the wrangler more than seven days after the due date, or one of us drops out of a project for whatever reason, that person is welcome to continue posting but is not allowed to sign up for a group project again until January 1st, 2017. No exceptions. This rule applies to participants and to wranglers. This rule must be posted at the bottom of all new projects that are being wrangled so that members can thoughtfully consider whether we wish to commit to a new project. And for the purposes of clarification, if someone drops out before the deadline to sign up has been closed then they are not excluded from future projects because they are still following the rules."

Please add $5 for repackaging and postage.Besame will send her address in time for shipping once signups are complete.

Here we go.. :)

Clay, thank you for an awesome job wrangling. I am in awe of what came in the mail and will be writing some personalized thank you's this weekend. Right now I am still so dead tired to the world from my new job. Oh, and the best was Clay writing on the outside of the package: "Please do not bend, fold, spindle, or mutilate!" I particularly loved the use of "spindle." Clay, you are the Boss. Thanks, everyone. I received some spectacular pieces, truly.

I say DO IT!

Here are some inspiration tid bits:
  • Break up a cd/dvd (smashing it could be fun by itself) and use the bits as mini mosaics (because who doesn't love mini art?)
  • Use full dvd/cds, paint them with a thick coat of white or black paint or gesso and scribble to your heart's content
  • I intend on checking out Saver's to see if I can score some uber cheap discs, if cost is a concern
  • Orrrrrrr if you have access to something that can shave the discs, you can shape them into vague images and then paint it on the disc (flowers, faces, animals, etc)
  • If you get your hands on discs that don't have any labels or anything, you can just color or paint straight on it and have a cool, shiny background for the negative

I think you'll do great!!!

Thanks. Gemme. Thanks for for the ideas. I think I might have some percolatig. Or of my concerns is that cds are a little cost prohibitive for me so I want a solid idea before I commit. I wont be able to do much experimenting.

Here CCB are some additional ideas, hope you can find some inspiration :) You can do it!! I thought this project would be a nice little change and allow us to play with different mediums.. I have seen your etsy store, and there is nothing you can't do :)

CCB....you can used "old CD's"...I "recycled" 20 from my huge collection I didn't care to keep any longer, and I had some "blank" ones as well. You can get some used ones at a pawn shop, etc. Or ask friends if they have any to give you......

As far as "expenses", this is the least expensive project I have participated in. For once, I happened to have all the things I will need for my ideas! Hence, the name "recycle".

I am sure you will do something awesome. You can do it girl!!!!

Don't forget that you don't have to use one whole disc for each project. You can do all the projects with pieces from just one or two discs if you want.

candy_coated_bitch 05-29-2016 08:59 AM

Thanks everyone for the ideas and encouragement! Ok feeling like i can do this now. I'm still not sure what I'll do but I will find my way. You guys are the best!
