Groundless Edmond Jabès I No-man's-land, obsessed page A dwelling-place is a long insomnia in the hooded trails of a mine. My days are days of roots, love's yoke extolled. The sky is always to cross and foreground to be bed with new nights. I form, in my weeds, a wedge in the wall's opaque brightness. The earth is steeped in empty dreams of travel. VI Land beyond night, which the sun wrenches from meditation, from the thorns of doubt. Flowers parade their artful candor. The stems emulate grand adventures in space. Honey flows between stones which this cement will join. VII Around the branches, the world mimes its hunger. So many cries for a tree, fragrant god to plant, to bend by a magic round. My secrets are orchards. There is no trick to the mystery. |

The Earth is a very small stage in a vast cosmic arena. Think of the rivers of blood spilled by all those generals and emperors so that, in glory and triumph, they could become the momentary masters of a fraction of a dot. Think of the endless cruelties visited by the inhabitants of one corner of this pixel on the scarcely distinguishable inhabitants of some other corner, how frequent their misunderstandings, how eager they are to kill one another, how fervent their hatreds. -Carl Sagan, astronomer and writer (1934-1996)

Don't wait until everything is just right. It will never be perfect. There will always be challenges, obstacles and less than perfect conditions. So what. Get started now. With each step you take, you will grow stronger and stronger, more and more skilled, more and more self-confident and more and more successful.

February 16, 2011 The Friend We Want To Be Evaluating Our Relationships It is important to look at ourselves and notice what kind of friend we are to the people in our lives. There comes a time in all our lives when we may need to evaluate our relationships, making sure that they are having a positive effect on us, rather than dragging us down. Without realizing it, we may be spending precious time and energy engaging in friendships that let us down, rather than cultivating ones that support and nourish us along our path. Life, with its many twists, turns, and challenges, is difficult enough without us entertaining people in our inner circle who drain our energy. We can do so much more in this world when we are surrounded by people who understand what we’re trying to do and who positively support our efforts to walk our path. We can begin this evaluation process by simply noticing how we feel in the context of each one of our close relationships. We may begin to see that an old friend is still carrying negative attitudes or ideas that we ourselves need to let go of in order to move forward. Or we may find that we have a long-term relationship with someone who has a habit of letting us down, or not showing up for us when we need support. There are many ways to go about changing the status quo in situations like this, having a heart to heart with our friend showing through example. This process isn’t so much about abandoning old friends as it is about shifting our relationships so that they support us on our journey rather than holding us back. An important part of this process is looking at ourselves and noticing what kind of friend we are to the people in our lives. We might find that as we adjust our own approach to a relationship, challenging ourselves to be more supportive and positive, our friends make adjustments as well and the whole world benefits. |
There is no absurdity so palpable but that it may be firmly planted in the human head if you only begin to inculcate it before the age of five, by constantly repeating it with an air of great solemnity. -Arthur Schopenhauer, philosopher (1788-1860)

In the gloomy north, on a bleak crag,
a lone, white cedar stands in the snow and has fallen sweetly asleep in the frosty mist, and the blizzard lulls its sleep. .......... It dreams all the time of a young palm which, in the East distant regions, beneath a burning sky, on a scorched hill, stands and blossoms, alone. |
