So last night I was restless and thought I'd buy myself a trashy book for my Kindle and pass out softly after reading a few chapters.
Now, let me preface this by saying that some folks think "trashy" equals "romance". I don't read romance. As a matter of fact, I have never read a romance book. Nope, for me, "trashy" is a work of fiction that I can dive into decadently (or sometimes not if it sucks) and forget the world. I had read "The Passage" last month on June and Irishgrrl's recommendation (read it if you havent!) and thought it was pretty delicious so I wanted to find something similar. Went to Amazon and saw this on the "people who bought this also bought": [ame="http://www.amazon.com/Reapers-Are-Angels-Novel-ebook/dp/B003P8Q5JO/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1299298388&sr=8-4"]Amazon.com: The Reapers Are the Angels: A Novel eBook: Alden Bell: Kindle Store[/ame] I must confess, I started reading at 9 last night and finished it this afternoon. It's a short book, about 300 pages but is a beautifully written post-apocalypse zombie fiction that reads much more like good literature than zombie trash. If you liked "The Road", "The Passage" or most Southern Gothics, I highly recommend this one. The imagery is stark and often hard to read (triggery) but is well worth it if you have a few hours to spare. I give it 4/5 stars only because I wished it was longer :) And don't get me wrong, this isn't "War and Peace" or "Anna Karenina", but it's good fiction. I think you'll appreciate it. |
In the past 30 days I've read
Next up? Hmm... |
Last night I started A Widow's Story by Joyce Carol Oates.

If you enjoy mysteries, you might want to check out Jon Loomis' series, which is set in Provincetown. I just finished High Season, and have started on Mating Season. Detective Coffin is trying to quit smoking and his lesbian partner, Lola Winters is a Butch who saved his life, in High Season. Most of the characters are quirky, and Provincetown is portrayed as a diverse, funky, and interesting place. Loomis scored extra points with me, because of his awareness of transgender issues. I'm looking forward to reading all of his books.

Almost done with Rainbow's End by Martha Grimes. A very slow mystery that I picked up once before, put down, then finally went back to and finished. Last month I finished a book called Into the Blue by Robert Goddard that I could not put down. I zoomed through it. I love books like that and hate it when I get to the end.

Also, don't forget that if you purchase books (or anything else) from Amazon that you can purchase them through our bookstore here at The Planet and we get a few nickles from the sale of each item. Great way to help us out. All proceeds go to the scholarship fund!
http://www.butchfemmeplanet.com/inde...geid=Bookstore I just started "Swan Song" by Robert McCammon and so far it's wonderful! I had to get it on the Kindle because it's something like 900 pages but I kinda love being immersed in a good book for a week or two. I am a fast reader and was reading a book every day or two if they arent over 300 pages so this one feels truly decadent. It's a modern post-apocalyptic but the reviews say it is reminiscent of Steven King's "The Stand". |
I read a book, about which I was really excited, only to be w-a-y disappointed and even disturbed by it. It is "Hereville How Mirka Got Her Sword" by Barry Deutsch.
It was, is, about an orthodox girl who wants to have a sword, have adventures etc. I found it to be filled with painful stereotypes and, (dare I say?) anti-Semitism. I realize that is a subjective comment, and is true for me, is my true experience reading the book, is my authentic experience reading the book. I hope I have covered whatever I need to cover by my statement. It is my own, very special person, response to the book. Has anyone read it? If so any thoughts? I look forward to a new book by Daniel Silva. Don't know when it's on it's way, but I have faith! So, I guess my 'what am I reading' is more of a 'what I just read' :) |
Kurt Vonnegut Slaughterhouse Five
So it goes I find this book strangely like my grandfather and his war buddies talking about the burning of the forest after the bombing of Dresden. I fear I am half in love with this book. |
Ive been trying to spend less time online, and more time reading.

I could NOT get into "Girl who kicked the hornet's nest" - Is it just me? Does it pick up after the second chapter?
I might pick it up again but the writing feels tedious to me!! |
After much debate (with myself), I ended up purchasing a Kindle because I was going on a long trip (and couldn't justify paying for a heavier luggage bag, which was already crammed). So far, so good...after I've played with it some more, I'll post in the Kindle thread :)
I'm about half-way through reading Wench by Perkins-Valdez and am really enjoy it it--thanks, Christie, for the recommendation! :rrose: |
Just finished A Casebook of Murder by Colin Wilson and just started reading another of his titled A Criminal History of Mankind and am working on getting more of his work.
No, I'm not morbid or planning on killing people, I just find the psychology of criminals and the various study of criminology fascinating, and I've always foudn Colin Wilson doesn't bullshit his research. |
I am reading through the banned book list. I spent a satisfying 15 minutes looking at And Tango Makes Three. Now I believe Farenheit 451 again because first they burn books then they burn people.

I dont like the writing style of the author, it was tedious. I had to try 2 diff times to read the 1st book. OMG it was horrible. But I loved the story, and I could ID with Salander, so just had to know how it all ended. Have you seen the movies? They are out in a US version and Swedish version. DO watch the Swedish version. You can turn on the English dub which isnt bad. The main character was cast perfectly. She is interviewed in the extras section of the 1st DVD I believe. Most books are better than the movie, but in this case its def the reverse. It leaves out all that tedious back chatter. |
I think with most of Steig Larsson's books the issue is the language barrier. Overall they are awesome books though but I have to agree the movies flow better.
