Ahmed Ibn Fahdlan: Ow!
Olga: That's a woman's sound.
Ahmed Ibn Fahdlan: Do that again and you'll make it.

"To be nobody but yourself in a world which is doing its best, night and day, to make you everybody else means to fight the hardest battle which any human being can fight; and never stop fighting." ~e.e. cummings

"All my life I had been looking for something, and everywhere I turned someone tried to tell me what it was. I accepted their answers too, though they were often in contradiction and even self-contradictory. I was naďve. I was looking for myself and asking everyone except myself questions which I, and only I, could answer. It took me a long time and much painful boomeranging of my expectations to achieve a realization everyone else appears to have been born with: that I am nobody but myself." ~Ralph Ellison

Are you interested in knowing another person's point of view?

The feeling part - feeling other people's feelings or having a resonance in your body with what's going on with them - maybe there's not we can do about that. It either happens or it doesn't happen if we're open for it.

But to use our imagination and our thinking, that's something we have some choice over. So if you find yourself in a difficult situation with other people, a difficult interpersonal situation, from what perspective do you look at the difficulty?

One of the perspectives to bring into this situation is, "What is it like for that person? How is it for them to be in this conflict? How is it for them to be struggling? What's going on for them in their life that they are so angry? Let me take a moment here to try to understand the background of their situation - they are afraid. What happened in their life that they are so afraid?
That's a choice - to take time to think and reflect what perspective - what's the bigger picture - that this person is operating under, as opposed to retaining only the perspective of "This person's had an impact on ME, and this is the impact it's had on ME, and this person better understand MY perspective and ME history and what happened to ME in my life - and I'm going to tell them."

- Gil Fronsdal

....funny..how a little fence, becomes a wall...before we even know it happened. how we post guards, always at the ready, to defend a broken heart and we entrust the key to a jaded past...and then it never ceases to amaze me...the power of a sweet babygrrl...to loose those stones...one by one...until all she has to do...to be home...is step over a little fence....

Nothing is easier than solving a problem on the backs of people who are poor or people who are are powerless or who don't have a lobbyist or don't have clout. I don't think that's particularly courageous.

"The very notion of out butching one another and competing for masculine validation intersects with complicated relationships, sex roles, friendships, and internalized sexism in a way that must be addressed directly. Lets put our fists down, and look eye to eye to those we are separating ourselves from so that we can collaborate in our fight for justice."

Catch-and-release, that's like running down pedestrians in your car and then, when they get up and limp away, saying -- Off you go! That's fine. I just wanted to see if I could hit you. -Ellen DeGeneres, comedian, television host, and actress (b. 1958)

"Happiness is always a by-product. It is probably a matter of temperament, and for anything I know it may be glandular. But it is not something that can be demanded from life, and if you are not happy you had better stop worrying about it and see what treasures you can pluck from your own brand of unhappiness." ~Robertson Davies
