What can I say? I've even forgotten how to busy my hands with scraps of needle- work, dumb hands unwilling to commit to what the heart won't. Instead, I sit idle staring out windows. Nothing fits the contours of the landscape I was born to—absence of mountains, dense green, and salt air that smothers like family, like the waters I breathed penned in my mother's womb. Hard to say when I chose this: nothing the hand does can stitch time back to that place where mind and eye might mend the world to wholeness. Always two worlds. What pattern governs this surface inscrutable as the ocean, my mother's face? ~Debra Kang Dean, "Stitches"~ |

Just when you thought it more or less clear from all the times you've sent money to public radio and boycotted Wal-Mart that you were the incarnation of Albert Schweitzer, or Gandhi, or both, you find out you're really just a slightly bitchier version of Martha Stewart. Your well of compassion and patience, which was never very deep to begin with, is now just an empty cistern.
- Jan Shoemaker From "Where The Water Is" |
"Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine as children do. It's not just in some of us; it is in everyone. And as we let our own lights shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others." ~ Nelson Mandela

How true
“Have you ever been in love? Horrible isn't it? It makes you so vulnerable. It opens your chest and it opens up your heart and it means that someone can get inside you and mess you up. You build up all these defenses, you build up a whole suit of armor, so that nothing can hurt you, then one stupid person, no different from any other stupid person, wanders into your stupid life...You give them a piece of you. They didn't ask for it. They did something dumb one day, like kiss you or smile at you, and then your life isn't your own anymore. Love takes hostages. It gets inside you. It eats you out and leaves you crying in the darkness, so simple a phrase like 'maybe we should be just friends' turns into a glass splinter working its way into your heart. It hurts. Not just in the imagination. Not just in the mind. It's a soul-hurt, a real gets-inside-you-and-rips-you-apart pain. I hate love.”~
Neil Gaiman |
Another Neil Gaiman quote
“I've been making a list of the things they don't teach you at school. They don't teach you how to love somebody. They don't teach you how to be famous. They don't teach you how to be rich or how to be poor. They don't teach you how to walk away from someone you don't love any longer. They don't teach you how to know what's going on in someone else's mind. They don't teach you what to say to someone who's dying. They don't teach you anything worth knowing.”
Neil Gaiman |
"After a while you learn the subtle
difference between holding a hand and chaining a soul, And you learn that love doesnt mean leaving and company doesnt mean security, And you begin to learn that kisses arent contracts and presents arent promises, And you begin to accept your defeats with your head up and your eyes open, with the grace of an adult, not the grief of a child And you learn to build all your roads on today because tomorrows ground is too uncertain for plans. After a while you learn that even sunshine burns if you get too much. So plant your garden and decorate your own soul, instead of waiting for someone to bring you flowers. And you learn that you really are strong, And you really do have worth" ~Anonymous :sparklyheart: |

The Most Beautiful Flower
The park bench was deserted as I sat down to read Beneath the long, straggly branches of an old willow tree. Disillusioned by life, with good reason to frown, For the world was intent on dragging me down. And, if that weren't enough to ruin my day, A young boy approached me, all tired from play. He stood right before me with his head tilted down, And said with excitement, "Look what I found!" In his hand was a flower, and a pitiful sight, With its petals all worn ... from too little rain or light. Wanting him to take his dead flower and go play, I faked a small smile and then shifted away. But instead of retreating, he sat next to me, Placed the flower to his nose and declared cheerfully, "It sure smells pretty and it's beautiful, too. That's why I picked it. Here, it's for you." The weed before me was dying or dead, Not vibrant of colors, orange, yellow or red. But I knew I must take it, or he might never leave. So, I reached for the flower and said, "Just what I need." But, instead of him placing the flower in my hand, He held it mid-air without reason or plan. It was then that I noticed for the very first time, That weed-toting boy could not see; he was blind. I heard my voice quiver ... tears shown in the sun, As I thanked him for picking the very best one. "You're welcome," he smiled, and then ran off to play, Unaware of the impact he'd had on my day. I sat there and wondered how he managed to see A self-pitying woman beneath an old willow tree. How did he know of my self-indulged plight? Perhaps from his heart, he'd been blessed with true sight. Through the eyes of a blind child, at last I could see. The problem was not with the world ... it was me. And, for all those times I myself had been blind, I vowed to see beauty in life and appreciate each second that's mine. Then, I held that wilted flower up to my nose, And breathed in the fragrance of a beautiful rose. And I smiled as I watched that young boy, another weed in his hand, About to change the life of an unsuspecting old man. (Author Unknown) |

"All who affirm the use of violence admit it is only a means to achieve justice and peace. But peace and justice are nonviolence...the final end of history. Those who abandon nonviolence have no sense of history. Rather they are bypassing history, freezing history, betraying history." - Andre Trocme |
