One Day

Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess

Sweet but also sad love story chronicling the lives of a working class woman and a wealthy man from when they met in college to when they reunite later on. Spewed my coffee when, at one point, Hathaway called her new look "butch". Love watching Hathaway movies.

It was a lot of fun. Plenty of chances for me to grab her hand, her leg, her arm. (I tend to get "involved" in a movie... I am right THERE in the action!) I also got teased a lot for all of that, but all in a good way.

Moneyball. Loved it. But I am a major baseball geek, so how could I not? :)

I know you asked Kobi this question but for me, ever since a class I took in graduate studies pertaining to Films, Culture & Society, my experience with watching films has sort of been ... tampered with. *lol*

ps/ last night I watched "Titanic" on DVD (on my notebook). Love that movie and other James Cameron movies! :) Gotta love the story about Jack & Rose...

ButchEire 01-18-2012 12:56 PM

Retro-ing again, since the new movies are nonexistent or crap.

Kate and Leopold: Don't hate, it's a fun movie!
Field of Dreams: Still a classic
P.S. I Love You: Love this movie!
Easy A: Very surprisingly well done.

Kobi 01-18-2012 01:04 PM

I loved Moneyball.

Friends with Benefits - what a sweet story. Justin Timberlake and Mila Kunis had perfect chemistry. Kunis without Timberlake would have been good too. :) Woody Harrelson as the gay guy was very cute in a weird sort of way.

4th and Goal - documentary following 6 college football players quests to make the NFL. Did you know every year there are 60,000 junior college/college football players? Of those, less than 1,700 have a chance to make the pros. Of those, only a handful will succeed.

SoNotHer 01-18-2012 08:27 PM

Excellent documentary that examines how much of a role nutrition and diet play in illness and disease.

ButchKnight 01-18-2012 11:07 PM

Spetters~1980 film by Paul Verhoeven

http://cdn-3.nflximg.com/en_us/boxsh...d/60030313.jpg

Rien, Eef and Hans, three young, working-class guys stuck in an industrial town on the outskirts of Rotterdam, have little in common save for one thing: their shared passion for motorcycle racing. But a deeper passion will soon rule their lives. The boys are completely blindsided when the sexy, ambitious Fientje comes between them and turns their world upside down. Paul Verhoeven directs this Dutch coming-of-age drama.

Colombiana:

After a Hit on her Parents leaves a girl orphan, she follows her Fathers strict instruction and makes her way to the U.S. with her Uncle, who in turn educates her and trains her as an incredibly Skilled Hitwoman.
However, her uncle continuously attempts to quash her thirst for revenge, warning her that her actions affect more than herself, but rather everyone near her.
I liked it, a decent amount of Action, with some Plot that made sense...Not just "U killed my papa, prepare to meet your Doom!!! -boom boom, crash, KABOOOM-"
That, and the eyecandy was pleasant....

SugarFemme 01-20-2012 04:31 PM

Moneyball~Please don't shoot me for not liking this movie LOL. I had a really hard time getting into it. Please keep in mind that I enjoy foreign films and art house films the most, so this really was not my genre.

Light of My Eyes or Luce Dei Miei Occhi

What an incredible film. It is so complex in its' simplicity. It was a very "quiet" film. Even when there was confrontation, it felt safe for some reason. It is not the the kind of film that most will relate to or possibly enjoy as there is no action, no big love scenes or a lot of excitement. It was really a man giving everything he had to a woman who had nothing to give in return and how this was finally reconciled.

Conan the Barbarian. I watched it all. Not my favorite movie by any means, or even something I would generally be interested in, but I gave it a chance because I love Jason Momoa from watching SG Atlantis. I almost didn't recognize him in this movie because he looked like this:

http://cdn.buzznet.com/media-cdn/jj1...less-conan.jpg

And I'm used to him looking like this:

I won't say the movie sucked, but it was at best, mediocre.

Tonight I will be watching

Aftershock

Wow...this movie made me all weepy about 20 different times. It is a Chinese film made in 2010. It tells the story of how a family was torn apart and rebuilt after death, loss, decision, and fate, in the aftermath of the 1976 Tangshan earthquake in which 240,000 lost their lives.

It more or less begins when a mother, who has already lost her husband to the earthquake, must decide which of her children is to live. The two children are trapped under a concrete slab at opposite ends. Moving the slab to save one, will crush the other. Both children are alive and can hear the rescuers pressuring the mother to make the decision. She must make the decision quickly or lose them both. The mother is anguished as she whispers, save my son. The daughter hears the mother make this decision and her silent tears were to cause the first of my many crying jags throughout this movie.

The daughter is taken from the rubble and laid beside her dead father. The mother and the son head off to rescue camps. It begins to rain heavily and the rain awakens the daughter, who obviously was not as dead as they thought.

I will not tell you more as I hope some of you will actually give this movie a look.

I loved loved loved this movie!!!

I saw "Hugo" this evening at the cinema.

Its a lovely film with a stellar cast, great writing, stunning cinematography and production design.

I would have preferred it not be in 3D (why gild the lily?)

Volver

I'd call it a Dramedy

Penélope Cruz plays a very independent and hard working woman dealing with a neurotic sister, a daughter smack in the middle of puberty among other issues.
After the much understood Murder of her srsly creepy asshole of a Husband, she tries to find a way to conceal any trace of evidence leading to the truth or the fact alone of his death, while her own aunts death puts a dent in a few plans already forged..
Her closest friend & neighbor, a medical marijuana user (diagnosed with Terminal Cancer) tries uncovering a personal mystery that bind them all together from events that happened long ago involving Raimunda's mother, (which is where everything leads to in the Film) she returns from the Dead in the process, for reasons u'd have to figure for yourself while watching....
It's got a serious plot revolving around Death with humor to soften the edges..

Caveat - If you don't foreign films with Subs, skip this.
It's better in original language, Spanish {Spain}.

Bonus: Cruz lip-syncs' a Flamenco rather well....The only part that's "musical" thankfully.

Pedro Almodóvar and Penélope Cruz have made quite a few films together as Producer/Actor combo that are amazing...
Those 2 would be, for me , like... Tim Burton & Johnny Depp.
w/o the "Camp"....

SugarFemme 01-22-2012 10:54 PM

Hey Rookie:) I have seen ALL of Almodovars films and I have loved each and every one of them. The two that have special places in my heart as they were the first two that I had seen are, "Tie me up! Tie me down!" and, "Matador". I just LOVED the metaphorical bullfight between the leads in, "Matador".

Yeah... I cried.... a lot. This one really got to me.

Sparkle 01-23-2012 09:06 AM

Oooooo two of my favorite films right in a row!

I LOVE Almodovar! 'Volver' is one of my favorite's of his.
An older Almodovar that I really loved is 'Dark Habits', very twisted dark humour (and as a former Catholic I liked it especially a lot, nothing like a naughty nun story) :)

'Farewell My Concubine' is visually stunning, if you loved that ScandalAndy try 'Raise the Red Lantern' another knock your socks off visually lush film.

About a weekend or two ago I saw the movie Jack and Jill, starring Adam Sandler. OMG thats a hilarious movie, but heartwarming and cute at the same time :)

lettertodaddy 01-23-2012 11:39 AM

I saw Haywire over the weekend. It wasn't that great. I had trouble with the fight scenes. Yes, I know Gina Carano is an MMA fighter/Muy Thai boxer, and I know she can hold her own against any man, but I'm still not used to seeing men beat up women in movies. Yes she bested all of her opponents, but it still made me a little uneasy.

It did make me want to go to the gym in a big bad way, though. Her body and the things she can do with it is astounding.

I would also recommend Ju Dou, by the same director. Gong Li is one of the most beautiful women in the world, I think.

Another great Chinese film I always recommend is Not One Less. A beautiful little film.

Isn't he the same guy that played the Khan in "Game of Thrones"? He sure looks like him. And the muscles in the movie picture are in line with what he looked like in the TV series. He has awfully nice tri-ceps.

foxyshaman 01-24-2012 12:20 PM

I saw "Underworld - The Awakening" in 3D. It was "meh". But they have certainly left it as a sequal producing movie. At the end I was like "that's it. I finally figured out the plot and you end it?" If this one flops chances are we will never see the next one. But Kate... she can still kick ass. Contented sigh.

we've been watching a lot of movies lately....i def recommend water for elephants
