“Each moment of a happy lover's hour is worth an age of dull and common life” - Aphra Behn

JakeTulane 06-14-2011 09:53 AM

“The reason people find it so hard to be happy is that they always see the past better than it was, the present worse than it is, and the future less resolved than it will be” - Marcel Pagnol

JakeTulane 06-14-2011 09:54 AM

“Don't rely on someone else for your happiness and self worth. Only you can be responsible for that. If you can't love and respect yourself - no one else will be able to make that happen. Accept who you are - completely; the good and the bad - and make changes as YOU see fit - not because you think someone else wants you to be different.” - Stacey Charter

Bigotry tries to keep truth safe in its hand with a grip that kills it. -Rabindranath Tagore, philosopher, author, songwriter, painter, educator, composer, Nobel Prize in literature (1861-1941)

Buddha said on his deathbed:

Do not accept what you hear by report, do not accept tradition, do not accept a statement because it is found in your books, nor [simply] because it is in accord with your belief, nor because it is the saying of your teacher...Be lamps unto yourselves.

The part of this most useful to me is not accepting something just because it supports what I already believe. I notice that when I hear something in the news about a person, an issue, a crime, it is so easy both to believe and remember that particular piece of info as true, rather than anything that does not support my current position. So I try not to.

nothing

I copied this from a book I just read. I thought it was pretty awesome.

" Death is nothing at all.
I have only slipped away to the next room.
I am I, and you are you.
Whatever we were to each other,
That, we still are.

Call me by my old familiar name.
Speak to me in the easy way
which you always used.
Put no difference into your tone.
Wear no forced air of solemnity or sorrow.

Laugh as we always laughed
at the little jokes we enjoyed together.
Play, smile, think of me. Pray for me.
Let my name be ever the household word
that it always was.
Let it be spoken without effect.
Without the trace of a shadow on it.

Life means all that it ever meant.
It is the same that it ever was.
There is absolute unbroken continuity.
Why should I be out of mind
because I am out of sight?

I am but waiting for you.
For an interval.
Somewhere. Very Near.
Just around the corner.

All is well. "

"Can't even shout, can't even cry, The Gentleman are coming by. Looking in windows, knocking on doors, they need to take seven and they might take yours. Can't call mom, can't say the word, you're gonna die screaming but you won't be heard."

I know that you believe you understand what you think I said, but I'm not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant.

~Robert McCloskey

I am Me. In all the world, there is no one else exactly like me. Everything that comes out of me is authentically mine, because I alone chose it -- I own everything about me: my body, my feelings, my mouth, my voice, all my actions, whether they be to others or myself. I own my fantasies, my dreams, my hopes, my fears. I own my triumphs and successes, all my failures and mistakes. Because I own all of me, I can become intimately acquainted with me. By so doing, I can love me and be friendly with all my parts. I know there are aspects about myself that puzzle me, and other aspects that I do not know -- but as long as I am friendly and loving to myself, I can courageously and hopefully look for solutions to the puzzles and ways to find out more about me. However I look and sound, whatever I say and do, and whatever I think and feel at a given moment in time is authentically me. If later some parts of how I looked, sounded, thought, and felt turn out to be unfitting, I can discard that which is unfitting, keep the rest, and invent something new for that which I discarded. I can see, hear, feel, think, say, and do. I have the tools to survive, to be close to others, to be productive, and to make sense and order out of the world of people and things outside of me. I own me, and therefore, I can engineer me. I am me, and I am Okay.

~Virginia Satir

You do not have to find what is true, when the false is discarded truth is there. It always was. Just keep observing the fact and the change will come automatically and will be lasting.
