This satirical hyperbole mocked heartless attitudes towards the poor, as well as British policy toward the Irish in general."

Makes for great reading both in the satire itself ( he even offered recipes ) and in the response to it.

The fact that the essay has lasted for three hundred years and is still taught in college says something about the quality of the satire.
