"I shot an arrow into the air,
It fell to earth, I knew not where;
For so swiftly it flew, the sight
Could not follow it in its flight.

I breathed a song into the air,
It fell to earth, I knew not where;
For, who has sight so keen and strong
That it can follow the flight of song?

Long, long afterward, in an oak
I found the arrow, still unbroke;
And the song, from beginning to end,
I found again in the heart of a friend."

The great advantage of being a writer is that you can spy on people. You're there, listening to every word, but part of you is observing. Everything is useful to a writer, you see - every scrap, even the longest and most boring of luncheon parties.

Not Here

There's courage involved if you want
to become truth. There is a broken-

open place in a lover. Where are
those qualities of bravery and sharp

compassion in this group? What's the
use of old and frozen thought? I want

a howling hurt. This is not a treasury
where gold is stored; this is for copper.

We alchemists look for talent that
can heat up and change. Lukewarm

won't do. Halfhearted holding back,
well-enough getting by? Not here.

Charles Baudelaire | Three poems for Wednesday

Sad Madrigal

i

What do you care if you are wise?
Be beautiful and Sad! For tears
Add an enchantment to the eyes
Just as a river mirrors the skies;
A storm revives the flowers.

I love you most when happiness
Deserts your countenance O’er cast;
When terrors do your heart oppress;
When, overheard, and ominous,
There spreads the dark cloud of the past.

I love you when your eyes let fall
A rain of tears as warm as blood;
When, though my hands caress and lull’;
Your pain is irresistible,
Like moaning at infinitude.

I love, divine felicity!
Anthem profound and exquisite!
Your sobs, your heartfelt misery,
And think your heart shines brilliantly
With pearls shed by your eyes so bright!

ii

I know that now your heart still seems
With old uprooted passions;
Still, like a forge, it flares and flames,
And in your heart burns still, it seems,
The faint pride of damnation.

But till your dreams, beloved one,
Have been reflections of Hell,
Till in a nightmare never done,
Thinking of poison, falchion,
In love with powder, shot and steel,

And opening to all with fear,
Seeking misfortune everywhere,
And stricken when the hour draws near,
You’ve been the helpless prisoner
Of irresistible despair:

You won’t be able helot queen
Who loves me only quivering,
In the long horrid night obscene
To tell me, overcome with pain:
‘I am your equal, o my King!’

The Spiritual Dawn

When the white and rosy dawn rakes appears
With the Ideal that ever gnaws away
By some strange and avenging agency
Within the sleeping brute an angel stirs.

The man afflicted who dreams on in pain
See the remote and spiritual skies
Open alluring, deep as the abyss.
So, lovely goddess, bright and heaven born,
Upon the smoky debris of excess
Your memory more charming, roseate, bright,
Hovers without end in my eager sight.

The sunlight does the candlelight surpass;
So, ever conquering, your benison,
Resplendent soul, is like the deathless sun!

The Cat

Come, Lovely cat, my heart is amorous;
Draw in your claws for me.
And let me gaze into your splendid eyes,
Flecked with Chalcedony.

When, gently, leisurely, my hands caress
Your head, your tensile back,
And grow intoxicated with the bliss,
The Aphrodisiac,

I see my mistress in my mind. Her glance,
Like yours, endearing beast,
Cold, searching, cuts and shivers like a lance,

Aromas sweet invest –
A subtle air, a perilous perfume –
Her body cinnamon.

- Life is too short to spend time with people who suck the happiness out of you. If someone wants you in their life, they’ll make room for you. You shouldn’t have to fight for a spot. Never, ever insist yourself to someone who continuously overlooks your worth. And remember, it’s not the people that stand by your side when you’re at your best, but the ones who stand beside you when you’re at your worst that are your true friends. -

Poema 13

~ Pablo Neruda

Tus Manos

Cuando tus manos salen,
amor, hacia las mías,
¿qué me traen volando?
¿Por qué se detuvieron
en mi boca, de pronto,
por qué las reconozco
como si entonces, antes,
las hubiera tocado,
como si antes de ser
hubieran recorrido
mi frente, mi cintura?
Su suavidad venía
volando sobre el tiempo,
sobre el mar, sobre el humo,
sobre la primavera,
y cuando tú pusiste
tus manos en mi pecho,
reconocí esas alas
de paloma dorada,
reconocí esa greda
y ese color de trigo.
Los años de mi vida
yo caminé buscándolas.
Subí las escaleras,
crucé los arrecifes,
me llevaron los trenes
las aguas me trajeron,
y en la piel de las uvas
me pareció tocarte.

La madera de pronto
me trajo tu contacto,
la almendra me anunciaba
tu suavidad secreta,
hasta que se cerraron
tus manos en mi pecho
y allí como dos alas
terminaron su viaje

~Pablo Neruda

“I believe that everything happens for a reason. People change so that you can learn to let go, things go wrong so that you appreciate them when they're right, you believe lies so you eventually learn to trust no one but yourself, and sometimes good things fall apart so better things can fall together.”~ Marilyn Monroe
