https://www.buffwear.co.uk/catalogue/index.php/cPath/52 ...help when it's cold and/or windy. |
I have flat feet...very flat feet....like Barney Rubble kind of flat....and I have been wearing Asics every day, but am finding that they feel very hard when I run in them; it's like they have no cushioning whatsoever or something; I can't put my finger on it.
I am going to head to Gary Gribble's and have them fit me for the best running show for my Rubble feet. I just hope they don't cost a gazillion dollars! |
great idea, G! the guys at my local running store will have you walk barefoot while they observe your stride and walking patterns, then they find the shoe that will work best for you. i am in desperate need of new sneakers but spent a small fortune on a pair of barefoot runners last year and need to save some cash for something different (they just aren't for me.)
i started running while going through my divorce as a way to cope with the incredible stress i was feeling. never thought i would fall in love with it the way i did. now i run occasionally but am dedicated to starting back on a regular basis here once the weather cools down a little bit. i am the opposite of JAGG. i love to run when it's COLD out! starting off in layers that i can shed as i warm up. by the time i'm done i've usually stripped down to a sports bra and my running shorts and the cold air feels sooooo good on my body. running in the heat just makes me grouchy. |

I've got 9 consecutive days under my belt (shootin' for 30) and 12 out of 13 total.
Today I did 33 minutes of jogging, but this time I did it in only two jog "sessions"......first one was 18 minutes and the second was 15 minutes (3-minute walk time in between). I think in another couple of weeks, I might be able to do 25 consecutive minutes. When I can do 30........ :| .......well, I just might cry. Here's to healthy hearts!! |
Yesterday I went on my route through the neighborhood, walking the dogs for the first time just around the block, then by the house to drop them in the yard, then I started in running one minute, walking one minute instead of doing the north/south and east/west rotation I was doing.
I found that I would be able to run longer than one minute, and would up it to 2 minutes, and even once at three minutes....trying to push myself a little bit harder than I have been doing. I was staying comfortable before. I saw a post on someone's page yesterday that said if you don't get out of your comfort zone once in a while, you will not be as successful when it comes to growing. I applied that to my running; as God knows I have pushed myself to well beyond anything comfortable in my every day life..lol So, it felt great to push my usual limits. I am setting my goal at October 1st to be able to run my whole route one time with no walking in between. I go around the route twice and that equals 2 miles, so if I run a mile by October 1st, I will be very happy and will strive for another goal at that time. |

One thing I am discovering is that the first 3-4 minutes SUCK for me. Once I get to about the 6-minute mark, it feels kind of easy. |
I've been working on finding my rhythm so my heart rate stays between 110-120 bpm. Based on what I'm reading, that is the target for me for fat burning/weight loss.
I've had to slow it WAY down....about 2 clicks shy of jogging in place. :| When it gets cold out, we'll be using the gym down the street; I imagine it will be *much* easier to maintain that on the treadmill (even though I have a mental block with machines for exercise). So that's where I am right now....still figuring this stuff out for myself. I started this on September 1; I have done 21 out of 22 days and 18 consecutive days of cardio. That's quite an accomplishment for me! :D |
I think I may have turned some sort of joggers' corner. :|
This morning I was waiting for my wife and her mother to arrive, so it changed up my whole routine. When they left the house, I was left thinking about getting my cardio in and wondering what amount of divine intervention it was going to take to get me going. My past would tell you that it doesn't take much of a change in my routine to get me to easily talk myself into skipping. Out of the blue......seriously.......I felt eager to get out the door and start jogging. It was like some Jack LaLanne spirit took over my whole body.....and out the door I went actually *loving* the idea of getting a jog in. That's so weird for me. I hope it sticks. |

We are going to have temps in the high 60's to low 70's the next few days, so I am anxious to hit the dirt! Wish me luck :)

I have stumbled upon a method to improve your speed and distance at the same time, with out any extra training. First you must begin your run in darkness am or pm as long as its dark. Then you should plan your route to include an unknown prime hiding spot for racoons. I tend to favor the ones with rabies or babies. When they come bounding out of nowhere and begin to chase you ,for what seems like 2 miles, (ok maybe it was 20 ft) not only will it cause you to sprint like Marion Jones, thus improving your run time, it will also motivate you to choose an alternate return route, lengthening your normal run distance. I look forward to sharing more tips in the future.

We never know in what manner lessons will be learned!! |
I've just started week 7 of 9 (C25k program).
I'm up to running 22minutes, with no walking intervals. I "should" be at 25minutes (all 3 of my runs this week are 25min, no walk) but I'm not quite there yet. 22minutes is a challenge for me. But I'm just going to keep running and if I only increase to 23minutes this week I'll will be patient with myself. I started on the treadmill last week; I was able to set and keep my pace, my breathing was easier and more consistent and I had less joint/muscle pain as I ran... but I can see how it could get boring. We've had a beautiful weekend so I took my runs outside this weekend. |

I ran 25minutes yesterday!
I was so proud - I nearly cheered myself on the treadmill. I've been trying for over a week to break 20-22minutes (I know it seems such a small increment, but my god its been a challenge). I'm definitely finding it easier to extend my endurance on the treadmill. My breathing is consistent and not as hard and I'm able to maintain my pace; both things I struggle with when I'm running on the bike path. After finishing yesterday I thought "I can run" - for the first time since I started this program in August. |
On the road to recovery............
I'm a runner here, just recovering from a broken ankle.
I was able to start running again after nearly 5 months of healing & rehabing. I'm working back up to 5 miles a day..................I am currently, barely loggin 2 miles a day. I just signed up to run Disney in January, I figured that would be a good goal to get me back on track. Keep on runnin & walkin! |

I set myself back on cardio when we went on vacation and then came back sick. :( I'm still on the mend from whatever-the-hell that bug was/is, but I am completely committed to gettin' back after it once the congestion clears! Today I'm going to start up again with mild stretching and low numbers of pushups and situps.......just to get my body used to the activity again. I don't want to do too much for fear of some sort of relapse. But, like I said, I still feel good and focused. *two thumbs up* |
running
Thanks Thinker for the welcome. Congrats to everyone here for getting out and doing it. When I first began on the treadmill I could only walk at 3.5 level 1 for 10 mins. The green smoothies, and juicing has certainly been a HUGE part of my improvement and progress.
Doing something everyday is what I keep my mind, and body on. Greco |
Running for life
Saturday afternoon I ran, not to exercise my body, but to run within
my love, and living memories of one of my Beloved sisters running I have found to be a place, a quiet, and at times bittersweet place to live my memories while I'm not given to speaking about my personal life on these so public forums tonight I have had to share my sadness, my fear of loss and while running I also celebrated my sister's life up to today She is challenged by illness, but continues resilient as she has been a power of example for us, her family. So, I ran to stand tall, to stand by her, to stand in love for her and all she is to us. Running then this afternoon for me has been to expend my fear, to find my courage to stand with my Beloved Sister who has stood in strength through many challenges. I don't know how far I ran this afternoon, it was more then an hour a slow pace a pace of grace of feeling love full on of running because I could for her for me for us. Running can at times like these be a solace a motion for finding courage when faced with fear the motion of life of love and I am grateful for running. Greco |

I find it truly euphoric, setting me in a state of eternal optimism that can last hours after a run. I'm not a person of many words, but I am of feeling. I'm often amazed how these things come into your life, when you need them most. ---- I'm listening to the string music you posted. Great choices. Peace be with you and your family. |
Running and Thriving through all feelings
Quote:
You said it well here. Running, no matter how slowly, has helped me survive, then thrive through my most difficult of feelings. And is my ride through my most joyful times, of creativity, accomplishment, and most importantly, Love. I stayed up late last evening, and was out later then usual for my run this morning...it was cold, the Sun bright, and I breathed slowly, as I ran just as slowly through the cobwebs of my mind, and finally came to that quiet, warm place in the run. A place where everything, including myself, is in harmony, when the only thing that matters is what really matters, Love. To you YB my friend, and new friends, have a great peace filled Sunday, Greco |
2 weeks away......

Run
Running this morning (6.5 mi) cold out, but the Sun was delicious the air clear the runners, power walkers, line skaters all out in droves...tired of being inside most of the week for too many hours...enjoy your Sunday, Greco

5K accountability club
Hey All
I am running a 10k in January (the tinkerbell at Disneyland) and starting training now. I am like 20 lbs over weight and have not ran in months, ugh. Thought it would be fun to motivate eachother here! Anyone else interested in motivating eachother?? I am going to do the ease into 5k and work into the ease into 10k. I will check in on this thread. Hope to see others do the same. Hugs! |
Why haven't i seen this thread until now!? Sweet! Just started training to run myself.. Ran my first 5 k a few weeks ago, and so ready for an event now i think.. (the 5k i ran was with the Running Room, in practice) took me 46 mins.. my breathing is improving, my form as well. For now, just working on distance, not hills or speed.. LOVE the runners high! thanks for bumping this thread starryeyes! |

There is an event here in San Diego called Color me Rad that is an 5K on August 11. It is an awesome event an all of the proceeds benefit Deaf Community Services of San Diego. I am going to try to get my self ready in less that 2 weeks, but if I have to walk some, who cares. I am going regardless! :-) |
10k
starryeyes,
Enjoy your training...the 20lbs will come off easily, you'll see. And your 10k will be exciting and fun. Glad you'll be posting your progress here with us so we can encourage and celebrate with you. Greco Quote:

A friend of mine & i have set a goal for Florida 2015 for the Goofy Challenge in Orlando..the 5k, half & full marathon.. And then September 2015 , California to get our Coast to Coast.. So lots of training, 5k's, 10 k's etc until then. But i really can't wait, it'll be so exciting and i'm sure i'll wanna stop and hug characters along the way and snap pix LOL.. It'll be about the experience more than the time, i'm sure.. Really cant wait to hear about your 5k in August starryeyes.. i'll be in Oregon then cheering you! When i ran 5k the other night i had to walk 10 of the 46 mins... It's going to be such an accomplishment, you'll do great! i can't wait for my first 5k! |

So glad to see this thread. I'd love to connect with other walkers, runners, and racers, from 5K to ultras.
I had a 24 hr race this weekend, and it was so crappy I dropped down to just the marathon division. Hated it- it was a boring loop course. I think I only have 5 half marathons, 4 full and 1 ultra left this year. |
What's a 24 hour race? Was it a loop on a track?
Nice to meet you :-)) Quote:

[QUOTE] Do you mean a run all night race? Where your team is a car/ mini van what ever and you take turns running- sleeping- driving as long as someone is running the entire time? I did one of these once (with total strangers) 48 hours of running between 6 people and the car was a ford torino station wagon. Did I spell torino correctly? It was weird at first, but the longer we got into the race, we *bonded* and running through the night was the best part. I think it was a two hundred mile race. For those that do not have any idea what I am talking about, you do not actually sleep...you catch a nap here and there.....here is a link http://breakingmuscle.com/sports/run...r-relay-series |
Hi Runners, On Wednesday, i accomplished another 5k practice run, SO proud of myself. No stops, which i am so happy for, and we did it in 46 mins, along with 2 Bentley's (hills....BIG hills...) Normally the ones who are trained on hills do 10 Bentley's, however, i'm only training distance at this point and time and knowing i could successfully run 2 Bentley's made me a very, very happy girl. It was a great run, and the best part was that the girl who manages the Running Room here, ran with me and gave me so many pointers and helped me with my form.. When i woke the next morning, i felt that *feel good* soreness, but nothing felt pulled or too sore.. In fact, i felt wonderful! While i know i still have a long ways to go in training, i love feeling the accomplishment and progress.. Runner's high! AND, this week is the first time i could say with pride that i am a runner, finally feeling that confidence! How are you all doing? |

I've been off the running wagon for a few months....tried to do too much for my last 5k.... ran one of my better times..... but I burned myself out in the process........ Right now, I'm working on the nutrition part of things so I'll have "fuel in my tank" for my next 5k and mud run...... I'm set to do a half marathon in October so this will be interesting... Anyone out there who might have something to say about the nutrition part of running..... feel free to share..... I'd welcome any suggestions.... |
Every sence I had my back worked on I have been doing more and more of the things I use to do and do them well. With the exception of jogging or running, this evening it was fairly cool hear because of the very cloudy day,so I was out in the front yard and out of the blue I desided to give it a go.I am impressed I managed to go as far as I did, about a block and a half, the jogged up and down my drive way that has a good slant to it so it will work your leggs. Now I can add some jogging and build up to runing,I am glad I shure missed doing that.

I actually prefer 12 hr timed races if I'm going to do a timed one, because I can still bang out a marathon distance and stop and rest if I need to if I am having a bad day. My favorite 12 hr race is the Mind the Ducks 12 hr in Rochester, NY in May. The RD is awesome. Been kinda draggy for me lately with all this humidity... next race is Rock N Roll Providence 1/2 Marathon next Sunday... then I am off until September. |

I will never do an overnight race that starts at night and goes into the next night again. I consider one that starts in the morning and ends the next morning. I was totally zonked. |
