I hear ya about the decisions vs $$$. Keep your eyes peeled; sometimes deals pop up when you least expect them. I wonder if there's a craigslist or swap meet style site specifically for used photo equipment....

When are we going to shoot again? That was fun!!

there's a craigslist category for cameras and equipment. i've gotten a decent deal there on some manual focus lenses.

freyja 05-03-2010 11:09 PM

If i was more savvy about camera equipment, i might trust myself to buy used. When a photo friend commented that mold is an issue in used lenses, i thought, okay, i'll stick to new (on sale) equipment.

The series of butterfly photos are great. What a treat to go shoot them.

Fancy 05-04-2010 05:18 AM

I hadn't heard about that before. How would you know if you had a lens with mold? (seems like a silly question - would it just inhibit the view or mess with the AF feature)

freyja 05-05-2010 07:47 AM

Freckle, i have no idea about the mold situation.

But i do know many of my local photog group have purchased lenses on Ebay, Kijijii, etc and been happy with their items.

i'm off to do some more food porn today - gotta love strawberry season. And well, chocolate, that's my year round food group.

Your food photography is amazing. Every photo I've seen has made my mouth water! Lol the detail and lighting is spot on.

freyja 05-05-2010 12:19 PM

Thank you Freckle!

And just so you know, that when i can get my plans sorted out for a weekend down there cruising cemeteries and such, i WILL bring you some treats.

i mean, you are showing such patience, how could i not reward you for that?

femmedyke 05-07-2010 07:57 AM

I am a picture taker... with a passion for shooting any and everything. Because of that I'm trying to figure just exactly what I shoot best. . .

I have two flickr accounts.... professional stuff here and personal stuff here. I also created and designed my own website and you can find that here.

I'm new to the thread so I just thought I would introduce myself. I haven't read all the way through yet, but I will when I have some time. It's lovely to be in such creative company.

I currently shoot with a Nikon D90 : two lenses (though I'm salivating over a third right now)

I recently just had my first piece accepted to the Commonwealths Equality Dinner -- it was bid on and auctioned... It was just such a validating feeling! You can see it here.

Sorry for the excessive linkage... just thought I'd get it all out there!

ps... did I see something about strawberries and chocolate? I'll be craving that all day now!!

have a lovely weekend!

I am photographing my mama in her garden for Mother's Day on Sunday. I'm looking forward to it.

freyja 05-09-2010 07:04 AM

Hi Femmedyke,

i checked out your links, each and every one of them :)

Great to see another talented artist amongst us here.

Please let us know when your Mother's Day photo is up (Flickr?). i will definitely be wanting to see what you have created.

freyja 05-09-2010 06:29 PM

Tonight at 9 pm, PBS has the one hour documentary on Annie Liebovitz; Life Through a Lens.

freyja 05-15-2010 06:27 AM

Food porn pic is up in my gallery.
i must say, it tasted mighty fine first thing this morning *grin*

A couple weeks ago I shot the local Lilac Festival, and I'm still wading through about 500 images!!

:)

femmedyke 05-24-2010 10:08 AM

Off to shoot a recent HS grad. . . so excited, haven't posted my mums pictures to flickr yet, but I did post some photos I took at a Pet Expo last weekend.

Okay.. .so edit question... what is your edit style? Do you group photographs and then go through them? How do you stay focused when "wading through 500 images"? What programs do you use/like?

femmedyke 05-27-2010 12:24 PM

Posted a couple of shots of my mama on flickr as well as a few from my recent session. If you're interested, of course :)

I'm a Photoshop nerd and will pull out the images I like and ensure that color balance is optimal and that an image is cropped the way I like. I do tend to over-crop because I like a tight frame (that just sounds wrong). I'm not a purist when it comes to my images, and if an image has potential I will tweak it (burn, dodge, soften/sharpen focus, etc) until it matches my vision. I would do the same when I was working on photos in the darkroom, so why not digital.

When a batch of photos is huge (like the 500), I won't work through the entire set. I will pull out groupings for specific purposes. For example, I shot many of local marching bands because several of my friends have kids in the band and I was shooting for them to have keepsakes.

Also, I'm incredibly picky. Out of that large set, I may keep or publish a dozen.

How about you?

femmedyke 05-27-2010 04:29 PM

I have a copy of Elements8 which came with my printer, but I'm still learning all of it's functions. A copy of Lightroom is on my (sadly ever growing) wish list. I currently edit my photos with GIMP and Picnik.

I absolutely love playing and editing a photographs; adding texture, layer masks, words, playing with curves (oooh la la), sharpening and softening. It all gets me downright giddy.

In order for me to process pictures for clients in a reasonable time frame I tend to do a quick run through and delete all those I am immediately unsatisfied with and then group the remaining images into locations or scenes. From there I'll time through each group and pick my favourites. I am also very picky but for me this means I will work and re-work a photo for hours upon hours. I am still learning when it's time to walk away from a photograph that can't be 'fixed'.

:)

Well, now... I never knew. ;) You are excellent!!

freyja 05-27-2010 05:05 PM

Very happy to see fellow shutterbugs in here.

Let's keep it active folks!!!

FemmeDyke - did you know you can get a 10 day free trial online, or have you already played thru a trial already?

I am a fan of many post processing programs. Adobe, Microsoft and Canon's own system. Depending on what my needs are, I like having many tools at my disposal.

Freckle - Did I miss the link to your lilac shots? ooooooh purple!

Ah, um...I didn't post any yet.

freyja 05-28-2010 04:58 AM

Freckle K, i think you shouldn't be allowed to take photos this weekend since you haven't shared your lilac ones yet *pout*

Not that i have anything from way back (hmmm Earth Day?) that needs to be shared still *i am soooooo bad*

Have a good weekend everyone....photos, i wanna see photos after the weekend!!!

I think I shall have many, many kitten shots for you; as we're fostering a teeny tiny 3 week old kitty. She's awfully sick right now and weighs only 9.2 oz . . . but still cute as a bugs ear.

I'm also partial to taking my camera with me to the farmers markets on the weekend. Always such cool shots. . . and this weekend I'm picking up rhubarb, for my first ever Strawberry Rhubarb pie. I'll most certainly take photos of that process.

Hope everyone has a great weekend... It's so nice having a place to share, collaborate, be inspired and get critique!

fondly, Amanda

still haven't really been shooting. but, i did run across a new (to you) shot that i like. i actually have a half dozen with this look to them. i like it quite a bit. no editing done beyond resizing and sticking my name on it. quite the surprise coming out of the camera. i like pleasant surprises.

freyja 05-29-2010 02:55 PM

Wow Wil, I really like the most recent upload (top of the page)....for SOOC , that is just wild. Good job!

femmedyke - we are both shooting new creatures....you wee kittens, and myself, new baby swans (cygnets).

Check out the one pic in my gallery of a one day old cygnet......he is discovering the world around him. Very funny!

Mums the word.

By the way, here are a few of my favorites I captured this weekend.

femmedyke 06-01-2010 09:34 AM

We lost our little foster on Sunday. . . and while I did get a photo of her, I am really not ready to share yet.

Also, the market had no rhubarb, so I have yet to bake.

I did play around with an idea I've had for forever last night. .. you can see it here. It wasn't my original vision but I still like it. Grief brings about creativity like nothing else... well, that and a desire to bake.

Great work Fancy, thanks so much for sharing.

Fancy 06-01-2010 09:53 AM

Love those shoes, the coloring of the image and the textures!

Sorry to hear about the loss. Please take care ~

freyja 06-04-2010 04:16 AM

Morning shutterbugs,

Am dashing thru, and see yay, there will be some photos to check out from Freckle and Little Man. Right on!

Sorry to hear you lost the wee foster FemmeDyke. 3 weeks is awfully wee.

Meanwhile, i am off to a Busker festival tonight, if the rain holds off.
I haven't been in a couple of years and I am pumped!

What's a Busker festival? Do I need to come across the border to see this? :)

Don't make me pester you about a passport, either... My weekend is booked with festivals and an aids walk (I may be in the band). I'll carry my camera the entire time!

Photo junkie

I'm an avid scrapbooker, so I am a photography junkie. :) I have boxes and boxes of pictures just waiting to go into albums...

Right now I have a Canon not sure what model it is but it has a zoom, auto focus and lots of settings I can change on it (it has a screen on the back but it's not digital). Unlike many of my fellow digital scrapbookers I prefer film photography because I enjoy working with the camera to get just the right shot and, well, I'm a shutterbug when I'm on vacation! Plus to me the quality of printed glossy or matte photos is just so much better than digital...
I just love the feel of them in my hands!

I learned photography from my grandfather in high school using an old Pentax K-1000 and took several courses in landscape photography when I was on vacation in England back in the '80's. I was also the corporate photographer at my old job that I held for 9 years so learned a lot about event photography and portraits plus digital editing while on the job.

Now I get to enjoy photography for the sheer enjoyment of it!

Nice thread....

Freckle,
Busk is the verb;
Brit. to perform for money as a singer or strolling entertainer in public places
Busker is the noun, the person who is busking,

There are jugglers, and clowns, balloon twisters, and fire eaters, and unicyclists and magicians, and.....

All the little street corners filled with groups of people watching the acts
A truly family event.

Rain threatens to drown out the weekend, and i passed on the 80% POP tonight. Will try and sneak in some dry time for me and my Rebel tomorrow.

Have a great weekend Freckle.

Have a great weekend all the rest of the shutterbugs :D

freyja 06-06-2010 06:39 PM

Well I didn't make it to the Buskerfest. The weather was absolutely miserable all weekend.
I hear a tornado touched down in PA....probably same stream that had one touch down in tomato farmland up here in Ontario too.

But.....I did have a window of fabulous sunshine for a shoot with two dreadheads. Yup, a wonderful couple both with dreads.

What did everyone else manage to shoot this weekend?
Indoors or outdoors?
