The Help
Almost as good as the book and I don't find that often. |
"The Killing"
OK, so not a movie, but an AMC series. They've, yet again, outdone themselves with seriously good drama. If you're into crime shows, mysteries, whodunits or just great drama, watch "The Killing".

Based on a true story~
Pretty eye opening story about two young lawyers suing a huge corporation that is thwarting efforts to get safety syringes(One time use only) into hospitals and other places to prevent medical staff from getting needle sticks. To prevent possibilities of getting HIV and Hepatitis. They also discuss syringes and needles being used multiple times in Africa being the root cause for the spread of AIDS, not sexual contact like the world has been made to believe.

Based (loosely IMO) on a true story about the beginning of legalized prostitution in Nevada.

Meet Monica Velour
Stars Kim Cattrall in a very different part. I really enjoyed it. A coming of age tale. Melissa |
I agree, I thought this movie was very sweet and so loved the ending too!
We tend to have similar tastes in movies I see. You also enjoyed Kill the Irishman if I remember correctly. |
repo men
alice in wonderland (2010) excellent films... |
I watched 50/50 last nite with ONLY. It was so poignant and funny and real. I loved it. Shed a tear or two.. (Ok maybe a bunch, blasted estrogen, but it was also very uplifting too.) It was great.

Freedom Riders - wow, I was very impressed with this documentary and the amount of photos an footage they used.
Fargo - can't believe I hadn't seen this before! |
An eye opener about how unimportant the killing of thousands of women, the gross injustice regarding them at the hands of the officials in Ciudad Mexico in the 90's. The misogynistic attitude of the Police Officials made me so mad!
"The true story of the border town of Juarez, Mexico where since the mid-90's thousands of women have gone missing or turned up as sun-burnt corpses in the desert." http://ia.media-imdb.com/images/M/MV...0,214,317_.jpg |

This movie was called *BACKYARD* |
I just watched "Winter's Bone" it was fantastic and tragically it reminded me of people I am related to. It could have easily sneered at the people it portrayed but instead it depicted them with depth and was open to their complexities. I really enjoyed it.

Immortals- This one was far better than "300", mostly because there was an interesting series of Subjects {for me} that didn't feel mind numbingly boring...
The Muppets- I'm aware that to watch a Muppet movie, u should expect some amount of corny feel-good song & dance..umm...this latest one? they'd break out singing for every little damn thing, 3 words out and a fuckin' song..i felt after the first hop & skip in a baby powder blue suit from an Adult guy that slept in a twin bed with his puppet brother {umm....????} that if the person next to him Copped a very long loud Fart with a giggle, they'd sing about its interesting aroma & probably what they ate prior while dancing with Miss Piggy...... Nobody told me anything about this being a Musical, and I enjoy musicals.. ugh..I switched it off after the poor bugger got Zapped to hell trying to jump over Kermits secured bel air fence..... |

Hunger Games - although it was good I was left feeling "meh". I am grateful I had listened to the book before I saw the movie.
Book 2 is coming on audio very soon... Now I just need to find a Sunday to lay on the couch and listen to someone tell me a story. (Contented sigh) |
"the girl who kicked the hornet's nest" thumbs up
"pirates of the caribbean: on stranger tides" meh "dilemma" fun |

Just watched "Vera Drake" (good) and "The Skin I Live In"...(whoa).. |
I finally broke down and watched the Fincher version of "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo". I was dreading it, and simultaneously morbidly curious. I LOVED the Swedish versions as well, they were spot on.
The Fincher film was not as bad as I anticipated. It looks great. It is slick and atmospheric. But it felt empty. The characters were not developed, the key relationships were not developed, if you had not read the books I think you'd be perplexed by some of the twists and turns of the story. They made some odd choices and changed the story in small ways that allowed them to cut what they felt were extraneous parts of the story. Regarding the casting....Daniel Craig is a little bit rough and a little bit craggy, but I think he's got too much of that James Bond-action hero quality about his physicality to make a good Bloomkvist, I didn't find him cheeky or charming or sharp. And Rooney Mara. Ugh, I've hated this casting decision from the beginning (Noomi Rapace knocked it out of the park as Lisbeth - who can compete with her?). After watching the film I must concede that Rooney Mara is a very good actress. I enjoyed her performance BUT I really hated the way they styled her Lisbeth, I found it distracting and just wrong. All in all, its not a bad film - its aesthetically beautiful, fast paced and well made - very high gloss. But it can't compete with the Swedish versions, and it doesn't do the book justice. I have not watched the 10-hour extended version of the trilogy yet, but I intend to. I also saw "Sarah's Key" with Kristin Scott Thomas. It was a good film, very evocative, terribly sad - about the persecution of the Jews (by the French) in France during WWII. Definitely worth a watch. And I watched "Melancholia" the other night. I wanted to like it. It has an interesting premise...but my god it was reaaaaalllllyyyy loooooong. It was pretty self-indulgent, arty for the sake of being arty. And yet I was compelled to sit through all 2hours and 15minutes of it. I was kind of sorry I did. |
ONLY and I had some time together this weekend so we watched The Descendants and District 9. Whew. Both were intense in different ways.
|
liked "district 9". yup.
enjoyed "the book of eli". a lot. "racing stripes". what a great, fun & fantastic film! (a total feel good movie!) |
