November 17, 200811:26AMA Marriage Manifesto... Of Sorts Post by Tom Ackerman --- I no longer recognize marriage. It’s a new thing I’m trying. Turns out it’s fun. Yesterday I called a woman’s spouse her boyfriend. She says, correcting me, “He’s my husband,” “Oh,” I say, “I no longer recognize marriage.” The impact is obvious. I tried it on a man who has been in a relationship for years, “How’s your longtime companion, Jill?” “She’s my wife!” “Yeah, well, my beliefs don’t recognize marriage.” Fun. And instant, eyebrow-raising recognition. Suddenly the majority gets to feel what the minority feels. In a moment they feel what it’s like to have their relationship downgraded, and to have a much taken-for-granted right called into question because of another’s beliefs. Just replace the words husband, wife, spouse, or fiancé with boyfriend, girlfriend, special friend, or longtime companion. There is a reason we needed stronger words for more serious relationships. We know it; now they can see it. A marriage is a lot of things. Culturally, it’s a declaration to the community that two people are now a unit, and that unity should be respected. Legally, it’s a set of rights and responsibilities. And spiritually, it’s whatever your beliefs think it is. That’s what’s so great about America. As a Constitutionally secular nation, or at least in reality a vaguely pluralistic nation, we can all have our own spiritual take on what marriage is. What’s troublesome is when one group’s spiritual beliefs deny the cultural and legal rights of another. But, back to the point. They say their beliefs don’t recognize my marriage, I say my beliefs don’t recognize theirs. Simple. It may seem petty, and obviously the legal part of the cultural/legal/spiritual trilogy is flip-floppy, but it may be the cultural part that really matters. People get married to be recognized as a permanent couple. To be acknowledged by friends, family, and strangers as being off the market, in a relationship, totally hooked up, yikes… it’s impossible to say without saying ‘married.’ We wear rings to declare this! So, we can take this away. We can refuse to recognize marriage in the cultural sense. It is totally within our rights, as Americans, to follow our beliefs and recognize or not recognize what we like. I guess this is a call out to all Americans with beliefs similar to mine. If you believe that all people should have equal rights, and if you believe that marriage is one of the greatest destinations of a relationship, then perhaps you believe that nobody should have marriage until everybody does. That’s what I believe. |

Just so you are aware...on Wednesday, November 9, 2011, FEMA, DHS and FCC will conduct the first national test of the Nationwide Emergency Alert System (EAS) test. This nationwide test will kick off at 2:00 p.m (EST) and run concurrently across all time zones. This system test is the first of its kind designed to broadcast a nationwide message to the American public. In the history of the country, nothing like it has been conducted on such a level. As you may be aware, there have been tests in the past, but not of this magnitude encompassing all regions of the nation simultaneously. The three (3) minute test will run concurrently on all radio and TV band stations exceeding the previous messages broadcast which were anywhere from a 30 second to 1 minute message. There is great concern in local police and emergency management circles about undue public anxiety over this test. The test message on TV might not indicate that it is just a test. The concern is that the lack of an explanation regarding the message might create panic. Please share this information with your family and friends so they are aware of the test. I am sooo awake and sooo have a craving for more coffee but that will not facilitate the sleeping process. I wanna dance but I want my ankle to heal because I NEED NEED NEED to run! Its been ages, my muscles ache to ache! I have decided I am totally in love with a singer named Lenka...kinda push over music but its just how I feel. How did I find her, she was on this here Winnie The Poo movie I watched with my son. *knocks head on desk* soo much energy....someone just shoot me! Oh but not with like a gun or anything cause i totally gotta alive till next Saturday for my new tattoo!

I'm slightly livid...
Ok, more than slightly... My trainer told me(as I was getting off work) TONIGHT at nine thirty pm that I was starting my shift tomorrow night... nine pm to 7 am I thought he was joking, but nope he was serious. He put in for my computer clearance FRIDAY NIGHT and it came through today... He's had three months to get my clearance, but like everything else he waited until the last moment. I found out last week that he could have been signing me off to perform tasks as soon as I was finished with the test all along, but he didn't want to have to keep updating my progress and adding permissions as my clearance went up. He couldn't be bothered to actually plan ahead so I might transition to full nights a little easier... If he had put in for my complete clearance on Weds of last week, he could have had me start my nights tonight... I would have had the weeked to flip my nights... Instead I have to flip my schedule overnight. Without having ever worked this shift...He was supposed to work my shift with me for at least two nights because what happens at night is NOTHING like the day shift... He's not working my shift with me... I have no idea what exactly I'm supposed to be doing... I mean, I know the procedures .... But I don't know the work flow... I know days.. I know when contracts go out, when fed ex comes, when to do the route... I don't know any of these things for nights... Sigh... I've been asking to work at least one overnight for a month... So I might learn the correct way to work the shift... but it didn't happen.... now I'm going in cold... I'll adjust and make it through... BUT It makes me think less of my department. It makes me think less of the company... It makes me start to rethink the thought that this is the company I want to retire from... Employers need to remember something... Employees may be on a probationary period, but so are employers.. |
