I realized that tomorrow is Friday, therefore it's jean day at work tomorrow! :D

We're over the huge hurdle at work that was stressing me out and it'll just level off from here. :D

This week is Pride in Saskatoon. Karaoke on Wednesday? Absolutely. :D

Best for last: I drive along the river on my way home, and I stopped at the farmer's market site to empty the garbage out of my console (I am one of THOSE.) A little girl who had been hanging off a lamppost while her mother was relaxing nearby came running up and said, "May I have a ride in your car? I'll give you a chalk." She had sidewalk chalk in her hand and it was purple. I was sorely tempted but for the optics of the situation, because hey... free chalk.

Why my car? It's not a snazzy one, but she must have sensed Marthe's innate worth somehow. :D

Dog rescues abandoned newborn

A farm dog in Ghana has attained hero status after spending a night protecting an abandoned newborn human. Authorities say the dog, along with its two-week-old charge, was found under a bridge in Winkongo (which is near Bolgatanga, the Upper East Regional Capital of Ghana), near the farm where he lives – with the tiny baby snuggled against him.

A search party had been convened to look for the dog, not the baby, when the pooch's worried owner got concerned that her pet hadn't returned home in the evening. Searchers spent most of the night tracking the hound through nearby fields and woods, and came upon the unlikely pair quite some time later; finally locating him under the bridge near the farm he calls home, they were surprised to find the dog curled around a human infant.

I got to see my favorite girl last night. Brought her a tomato plant after the last one we bought died while we were away for a long weekend. The smile on her face made me smile.

Mass. teacher to grads: 'none of you is special'

WELLESLEY - A Massachusetts high school teacher told graduating students "none of you is special" in a lively, if unusual, speech.

David McCullough Jr., who teaches English at Wellesley High School near Boston, made the point repeatedly in a blunt address last Friday in which he highlighted the "pampered, cosseted, doted upon, helmeted, bubble-wrapped" graduates' existence.

"You've been nudged, cajoled, wheedled and implored," McCullough said. "You've been feted and fawned over and called sweetie pie. Yes, you have."

But he warned them, "Do not get the idea that you're anything special. Because you're not."

McCullough pointed out that "across the country, no fewer than 3.2 million seniors are graduating about now from more than 37,000 high schools."

"That's 37,000 valedictorians ... 37,000 class presidents ... 92,000 harmonizing altos ... 340,000 swaggering jocks ... 2,185,967 pairs of Uggs," he added.

"You see, if everyone is special, then no one is. If everyone gets a trophy, trophies become meaningless," he said, before musing, "We have of late, we Americans, to our detriment, come to love accolades more than genuine achievement."

McCullough ended his address on an optimistic note, though.

"Resist the easy comforts of complacency, the specious glitter of materialism, the narcotic paralysis of self-satisfaction," he urged his audience. "Dream big. Work hard. Think for yourself. Love everything you love, everyone you love, with all your might. And do so, please, with a sense of urgency."

----------------

In this day and age, that speech took guts. Have to smile at a man who speaks his truth so eloquently.

Also, in this day and age, part of me wonders where he will be teaching next year. ;)

My boy Fruitcake and I are house sitting this weekend. Fruitcake loves the big hill behind this house. He was up there rolling in the grass on his back while simultaneously sliding down the hill. Then, he would run back up and do it again. Pure doggie joy. :)
