Yeah, my guys do good pushing people around early. It's the later innings we seem to lose focus, drop fly balls, forgot how many outs there are, and other mental errors.

Cleveland will push us around some more - getting back at us for stealing Victor Martinez.

Well looks we both have reason to be happy this evening. Good job on the win. It's always better when it isn't a sweep. Detroit and Cleveland lost while the WS picked up a 1/2 game. Good deal

That was cool. It was our second win at home since mid-April. Kind of sad to think home cooking has motivated only 4 wins this seasons. But a win is a win at this point of the game.

Glad you gained some ground. Still sweeping the cellar here LOL.

doing the right thing in sports such as attitude, playing the game fair, giving all players a chance, etc. ... may not lead to a championship. but it leads to winning in the heart.

i don't see this as one of those things. maybe i'm wrong to a certain degree. the lady of sorrows are standing up for what they believe in.

but they are also missing out. they need to do some re scheduling. this isn't mesa's rule. i'm glad mesa is standing up for what they believe in too.

overall, it's very sad.

have you seen the *Z* yet???

We (the Pirates) have been far from perfect thus far, HOWEVER I love the excitement they bring each night. Here's a little bit of what I'm talking about.

I am shamed to admit that I have not seen Dude, Where’s My Car?
You would think that like all educated Americans who have taken the time to see the great American classics, I would have seen this masterpiece by now. But I haven’t. I also haven’t seen Glitter. I cannot hang my head any lower.
When Rod Barajas hit a walk-off home run (!!!!!) last night in the bottom of the ninth with the Pirates down two runs with two outs, to send the Pirates over the Nationals, I didn’t get why the Buccos crowded around home plate to welcome him home while making some weird sign with their hands:
http://thatschurch.com/wp-content/up...eo-600x290.png
http://thatschurch.com/wp-content/up...o2-600x299.png
But now I know thanks to the Post-Gazette, the origin of sign:
As Barajas rounded third, he found the rest of the team standing with interlocked fingers forming the letter ‘Z,’ a trend that Neil Walker helped start in Atlanta. The sign references Zoltan, a character from the movie “Dude, Where’s My Car?” and a sign now given after a hit.
“We just started doing it, we’ve been raking ever since,” said starter A.J. Burnett, who got Barajas with a shaving-cream pie in the face after his winning homer. “That was my favorite part of the night, seeing 20 guys behind home plate doing that. It shows you what a group we have.”
Here’s the clip!

I’m not gonna lie. I lost my shit a little when he popped a bubble on the one dude’s space suit.
Anyway, if you haven’t seen the home run and the ensuing celebration, watch it here. Watch it all and never let it be said that the Pirates don’t care about winning. These guys care about winning.
When are the Buccos going to break out Blue Steel, is my question. .…

A.J. Burnett continues tradition of shaving cream pie

Thank you Yankees for letting us have Burnett. He's fitting right in.

Pretty insightful of you to recognize that they are simply standing up for what they believe in disregarding that the rest of us find it rather senseless. I had to look up this society and it looks like they went way rouge on the Catholic Church although they clain to obey the pope (they've managed to piss off 2 popes now and gotten themselves excommunicated by the vatican.)

The Brooklyn Dodgers should still be in Brooklyn and you are right. This team was a perfect example of the difference between trying and not trying. They had won several pennants previous to 1953 and never made it all the way. How much more sweet their victory was over the Yankees.

Yes, they had lost to the Yankees in the 1941, 1947, 1949 and 1953 World Series before finally winning in 1955. They'd also lost two World Series in their earlier years, 1916 against the Red Sox (with Babe Ruth in the team) and Cleveland Indians in 1920.

Sad state of affairs that both the Dodgers and Giants moved to the west coast in the late 1950s.

Well, I believe that the local team is also closely associated with the city/town/neighborhood/fan's identity. If it were not so thousands of joyus fans would not be jumping up and down screaming We Won We Won after clinching a championship. I believe that it takes something away, you lose a little, when a team leaves for another location.

The Mets moved in but it just isn't the same. Just like when a favorite neighbor moves out and another moves into his house. You might like the new guy, but you'll never forget the time that.......with the original neighbor. The new guy will never be the old guy even if you grow to love him.

We could have lost the White Sox to Florida in 1989. Thankfully we did not. The neighborhood that the team is located in, Bridgeport (and the south side of Chicago) would have suffered greatly for it. It's as much a part of us as the churches, the schools, and the locally owned businesses. Even if you weren't AT the game, the sound of fireworks booming in the night meant that someone knocked it out of the park or that our White Sox won.

Pittsburgh is a prime example of a city identifying with their teams. Every one of their sporting teams have the same colors, Black and Yellow. From the Pirates to the Penguins to the Steelers alike........Black and Yellow......the color of the city......the Iron City.

Now I've never been to LA, but I can say I've never met anyone who said they were a die hard Dodgers fan. The city currently is the largest market without a professional football team. They do follow the Lakers but I can't tell if that is fandom or fashion. They just don't seem to have the heart.

My folks loved it that the "Bums" and the NY Giants moved to CA. They courted & sparked back in the 30's with these teams but moved to CA in 1948.

I've been to Southern California often, although until now I've never been to the Dodgers. Ironically, however, I'm actually going to one of their games later this month.

I'll always remember when the Raiders played in Los Angeles. I was a Washington Redskins fan as a young child and cried tremendously when the Raiders won the 1984 Super Bowl.

Oh great. Let us know what kind of experiance it is. I'd love to take a summer and do the one game at every ball park thing. I know that won't heppen so I'm going to tailor it to a select few musts like Yankee Stadium and Fenway Park.

I definitely will post here what the experience was like.

I love the Yankees history and love going to Yankee games. I used to travel to New York often but, for some reason, I haven't been back since 2007 so I haven't been to the new Yankee Stadium yet.

I loved going to the old Yankee Stadium - the history and the ghosts were immense - so will be interesting to see what the atmosphere is like in the new stadium. I hope to get there in the summer.

I confess to complete and total jealousy right now. I would have loved to see a game in the old stadium. In an earlier post I mentioned that Roger Maris is my all time favorite player, but there are many others that also happen to have been Yankees.

This weekend is going to kind of suck. I had tickets to the White Sox-Cubs game @ Wrigley Field and decided to sell them because all of the out-of-town goons protesting the NATO summit are all over the place. One of them pushed an 80 yr old man down the day before yesterday. I'm not taking my wife down there.

I actually have an original architect drawing of part of the original Yankee Stadium. It was produced in 1921 by the Osborn Engineering Company of Cleveland who designed the stadium. It ultimately opened in 1923.

My favourite player of all-time is Tony Lazzeri although I also love the story of Lou Gehrig.

Lazzeri was a Cub around 38-39ish. (Poor guy, they were 30 years into their slump by then). He did actually play with the Cubs in the World Series....against the Yankees in '38. They lost. An old, classic Yankee, played with both Ruth and Gehrig. Tony once said them;

"They didn't get along. Gehrig thought Ruth was a big-mouth and Ruth thought Gehrig was cheap. They were both right." - Tony Lazzeri

He was a good ballplayer. What made him your favorite all time?

Yes, Lazzeri went to the Cubs in 1938 - it was his only season there. He then went to the Dodgers, New York Giants and ended up in Toronto.

Why is Lazzeri my favourite plaver? It's strange but I'm not really a baseball fan in that it's not my sport. However, I love imagery of the Yankees of the 1920s and 1930s. I collect original Yankees photos from this period and have one of the best collections that exists.

Why do I like Lazzeri? Well, he wasn't as popular as Ruth or Gehrig but a damn good player. Also, I like his being Italian at a time when it wasn't always easy to be high profile and successful as a non-WASP.

However, above all, Lazzeri is my favourite player because he was so photogenic. I have photos of Lazzeri from his first days at the Yankees in 1926 and chart his career through the Yankees. What I find most interesting is that he had such a warm, alluring smile but that seemed to go after he left the Yankees. I've five or six photos of Lazzeri at the Cubs in 1938 but he's not smiling in any of these, same with photos of him at the Dodgers and Giants.

I recently purchased the original negative of a Lazzeri photo taken in the summer of 1946. In this, he was wearing a Yankees shirt as he was at a baseball summer school in San Francisco. He was found dead weeks later. I'm not certain but think that this is probably the last ever photo of him pictured in a Yankees jersey.

Dominique 05-20-2012 05:34 PM

The Pirates have struck out 43 times in three games. The Detroit Tigers, NEVER, in their 100 year history have stuck out so many batters in a three day series.

The season is one third over, and it's time for me to start calling this out (again) The Pirate organization did not fire that batting coach (Ritchie) last year when we were pitiful with offense and strike outs, and somehow it managed to get worse.:seeingstars:

17 batters struck out today.

Pedro Alveres hits an occasional home run, and plays nearly every day. He's batted 123 times, and struck out 53 times. Thats 42% of no contact with the ball......why is he still in there?

Then there is Rod Barajas (the over weight catcher) he's thrown out 2 runners on 36 attempts. He had another passed ball today, and one yesterday...because he is as over weight as Prince Fielder and is more like a back stop than a catcher. His batting average is .217.....why is he still playing? The Pirates released Doumit because they said he couldn't catch (at least he could hit:sunglass:)

OK, rant over.

Wolfsong 05-20-2012 05:58 PM

Hang in there Pittsburg it isn't over yet

I on the other hand am completely overjoyed that my Chicago White Sox rose to the occasion on the world stage (Games were broadcast on AFN & members of NATO attended) this week by sweeping the Cubs today 6-0.

We went from 4.5 out of 1st and in 3rd to 2nd at 2.5 and passed up Detroit. Bring on the Twinkies!!

Dominique 05-23-2012 05:01 PM

I'm not the only one

Keith Hernandez was on the air during this afternoon game (Mets vs. Pirates) totally dissing on Barajas for his lack of discipline and seemingly what Hernandez called an innability to just play the game............

I'd say Keith Hernandez knows a bit more about baseball (and catchers) than I do.

beyond embarrassment

Now see, I'd like to bury Verlander in the litter box!! For the last few years the Detroit have given us a lot of trouble.

The Giants had bagged one of my favorite players, Aaron Rowand. My wife was able to score front row seats at a Reds game when they were playing the Giants. As Rowand was running back to the dugout she stood up and yelled "Aaron, Chicago misses you!!" He trotted over to her, gave her a big hug over the wall, and told her that he missed home too. After accomodating her for couple of pictures he went into the dugout. He was a fan favorite here. Although he was not the best player on the field he was definitely the locker room team glue guy. Unfortunately I see he is sitting the year out as a free agent this year.

Kobi 05-25-2012 09:34 AM

The Red Sox took 2 of 3 from the division leading Orioles. Finally, they are at .500.

Even tho we are anchoring the bottom of the division, the Yanks are sitting right atop us at 1 game over .500.

Weird how 2 teams with gigantic payrolls are languishing in the cellar, fighting for last place at the moment.

It's being denied by the Yankees but I'd be very surprised if Hal Steinbrenner won't sell if he gets an offer he cannot refuse. He's said to approach things in a business manner rather than romantically so, in basic terms, money talks.

A sale would probably be no bad thing for the Yankees given that they need to invest in the team and that's something the current ownership is reluctant to do.

Not surprisingly the Yankees have the largest payroll in baseball.....followed by (surprise!) the Phillies. My personal opinion is that athletes in all sports should be salary capped to at least something in this stratosphere. It's ludicrous to me that a clown like Alex Rodriguez can make $179M over 10 years and firefighters, soldiers, and teachers barely make enough money to put food on their table. I suppose that could be a whole 'nother thread and it can be argued that nobody is paying $120 to wear a paramedic jersey.

A.J. Burnett did not disappoint last night. :vigil: We scraped a victory out thanks to the Cubs two errors. (1-0) The Cubs have lost 10 in a row, this is a LOW for them. Also, this is a 4 game series and we are currently 3 games out of first place with a team batting average of 211. The worst in the majors, It's speaking volumes for our pitching.

Outrageous salaries and payrolls for that matter, in addition to the things in their contracts, like teams they absolutely can not be traded to, 10 year
deals...it's all out of hand and I am sure it's a reason many people do not care about baseball anymore. Now that I am thinking about this, I wonder why the Wall Street protestors never took their rallies outside of ball parks.

I can't say anything about baseball being too expensive here in Pittsburgh.
Our Bleacher seats sell for $10.00 AND they are not bad seats! Standing room only seats (spots) are $8.00. PNC park (home of the Pirates) allows you to bring in a small soft sided cooler and unlimited unopened water.
It's nice to see families at our home games.

AtLast 05-26-2012 11:32 AM

ARGH.... Lincicum threw another horrible game last night! How can a 2-time, back to back, Cy Young winner be in this kind of mess? It is obviously shaking his confifence and also that of Bruce Bocce. Wouldn't be surprised if he is taken out of the starter rotation.

But SF's offense has come along! Swinging great and getting those RBI's! Posey is slugging and Crawford is too (which I hope some of the pundits eat crow for- yeah, he has made some defensive errors this season, but the kid is young!)- Huff is back playing and seems to be OK.

But, Timmmy.... Oh, Timmy!

GO GIANTS! Take miami tonight and cinch this series 2-1!

Dominique 05-27-2012 03:28 PM

We have NOT had a sweep of any series since Sept. 2010. At the expense of the Cubs, who have now lost 12 in a row. The pirates had a little spark to their offense today, with 12 hits, 4 of them home runs.

It's painful watching two offensively struggeling teams play against each other. We left 10 runners on base last night (twice with bases loaded) and didn't score a run either time. The winning run occurred after the Cubs loaded the bases (again) in the bottom of the 9th, score tied 2-2 and then the pitcher hit our batter and walked in the winning run.

Few fans were laughing. We've been on the other side of this for far to long and could feel the Cubs pain.

But a win is a win and a sweep is a sweep. We play the red hot Red's tomorrow. (I errored, I thought this was a 4 game series with the Cub's)

Few fans were laughing. We've been on the other side of this for far to long and could feel the Cubs pain.

Don't feel sorry for them. We were laughing here too. How the hell do you load up the bases and then WALK the winning run in?

Not good when even the WSJ gets on the Pirates

I like the Pirates and have high hopes they will turn out to be one of those miracle teams soon.

The WSJ article was pointing out they have the worst offense in baseball, scoring just 2.86 runs per game. But they are not hitting just worse than any team in 2012, they're hitting worse than any team in baseball history - after adjusting for league norms.

Well, hell, then there is nowhere to go but up! Keep plugging away Pirates. Got a couple of your pitchers on my fantasy team and I have faith they will do well.

I made my first ever visit to Dodger Stadium yesterday for the Dodgers' game versus the Astros.

Overall, a very enjoyable afternoon -fairly low key and family-friendly atmosphere in a crowd of just over 33,000. Atmosphere was much more laid-back than I imagined it would be - probably, in part, because it was a sunny Sunday afternoon but maybe also a west coast thing?

I much prefer stadia that are in the heart of a city, such as the Padres' Petco Park, but the setting of Dodgers' Stadium is beautiful with the mountain range backdrop and it's one of the best stadia I've watched baseball in too.

Some remnants of the Brooklyn Dodgers remain - references to the 1955 World Series, some imagery of Brooklyn Dodgers stars of the past including, unsurprisingly, Jackie Robinson and longer-back, Casey Stengel who was famous for playing for or managing all the New York teams (Dodgers, Giants, Yankees and Mets).

However, this Dodgers "franchise" (I hate that word) is very much Los Angeles and the vintage heros of the crowd yesterday were not of those great, and sometimes heroically comical "wait til next year" Brooklyn sides of the 1910s, 1940s and early 1950s but, rather, the great Dodger teams of the 1960s and 1980s ..... at least, that's what the retro shirts many in the crowd were wearing implied.

All-in-all, a good day out and, notwithstanding over $11 for a beer, I'd happily return.

I wouldn't say I was feeling sorry for them....I just couldn't laugh at a blunder costing them a game. The Pirates have been the basement Buc's for 20 years. Last year we had a 2 month period where we were actually contenders instead of pretenders and this city was on fire with baseball fever. This year, we've S O M E H O W been hovering at .500  and the goal is to at least win the division.

The Cubs are not awful. They field an awesome defensive. When you struggle offensively (and we certainly have) and repeatedly we were robbed of hits by your position players Campena, DeJesus, Soriano, Barney and Starlin Castro.

We also understand your problems with catchers. We used 8 last season. I wonder if thats any kind of record(?) We play the Cubs more than any team this season....(that could be good for us) but I fully expect Dale Sveum will get things worked out.

Anyhow, The Reds come to town today, and this will be an opportunity for us to see how we really compete.

Yes they are

Other observations about this game.......the seats are still full at the end of the game. I cannot stand it when people leave a game early. I LOVE the lone fan yelling "Let's Go Bucs!!" and trying to get others to chant with him. I love the response and enthusiam of the Pirates after winning as if that game. Nice team, nice fans.

This is silly......it's only June 1st...... There is a lot of baseball left to play......why is my heart already so hopeful?
