Found a 1945 wheatie today as I ate my lunch and browsed through my massive penny pile...

I am going to have to expand into other kinds...

Ya know, when I was in college I spent a summer in a small town in Italy on an archaeological site. It was an Etruscan site and I was the only one who found a coin. It had Pegasus on one side and perhaps Helen on the other. It would have been stealing but there was always a part of me that wished I had just dropped it into my pocket...

It looked something like this:

*sigh*.... There will come a time I start an ancient coin collection... I just know it!

i think i have some...they are circulated, but i can check the condition bc i got them in several rolls i bought...i can always take a pic first and send....but before i commit let me look thru them.

CityButch....i woulda struggled with dropping it in my pocket aqs well...but like u i bc my damn conscience tends to get in the way....i try to pick up foreign coins whenever i can...and ancient coins look interesting as well

i picked up a 1998 silver eagle and 4 ozs of copper rounds for $50. i know copper isnt a great buy,but they looked so nice and they were different than my collection i just had to have it!

i went thrui my 800 wheaties the other night..got a couple teens and a few 20's and 30's...most of them for 40s & 50s...but still they are worth 2-4 times face value so definitely worth it!

Question for coinees:

My son and I saw some--I think they were Liberty?--dollar coins at a shop the other day, in plastic cases, and they were selling for, like, 79 or 89 cents.

You can imagine how exciting that can seem to a 12yo. I admitted to him that I hadn't the slightest idea what was up with that.

scootebaby 08-15-2011 11:16 AM

if im understanding correctly...liberty dollar coins for less than a dollar--im guessing they arent real....liberty half dollars or whole dollars usually run upwards of $35+....IFthey happened to be real snatch them up!

just my .02

tapu 08-15-2011 12:40 PM

well that's bizarre. i can't imagine this place would have fake ones. it's not like fake ones are desirable for some reason and so could be on the market legit?

this is a gold/jewelry/coin place (oh, and beanie babies, don't forget beanie babies) that's a large established business. i sold them a bunch of jewelry that day and the price seemed fair to me. (well, not fair, maybe, but standard or above)

it's out of town but i'll check. i'm going to check what asa has, too. his grandpa sends him dozens of cased coiins.

just checking in to see how everyone is doing....find anything good? yanno all that stuff.....i came across a 1882CC morgan dollar that was part of the GSA...government hoarded a bunch of them then released them for $30 back in the Nixon era....i got it for $75 and found out then sell for around $200 so i got a hella good deal!

Elijah 08-25-2011 07:54 PM

Thank you for looking. It's the hardest year to find because they are 90% silver, the four years after 1964 are 40% silver and beyond that they were made with unremarkable metals.

Where did you "find" it?

Craigslist actually...under antiques..gotta be careful when buying from there, but several of my morgans have come off of CL,and at a fairly good price.

It's payday so I am on the hunt again. Can't decide between investing in a Buffalo Nickel, Mercury Dime/s or perhaps a Walking Liberty Quarter. Once I start looking, I get concerned I haven't done enough research, etc. etc...

How is everyone else doing? Any new acquisitions?

scootebaby 09-10-2011 08:51 PM

Hey Elijah....I spent 7 weeks fighting with Workers Comp to get paid so unfortunately i have not purchased anything new. As far as MY suggestion on what coin to purchase i would go for anything silver before non silver.I like buffalo nickels, but there arent a lot out there worth much money. With the dimes and quarters you get the melt value as well as the age value. Of course thats just how i look at it!

Also morgan dollars are always a good buy as well!

happy hunting!

I actually ended up getting 20 Buffalo Nickels...I had really wanted some and the price was better than the alternatives. Thanks scoote, you are always helpful.

Hey Elijah,

Congrats on the new acquisiton. Nothing wrong with Buffalo nickels. I actually came across one at work-1938-thats worth about $40. It was a lucky find. If i havent said it before i am trying to collect coins that have dual value...history/age and metal value. I used to collect bills as well, but have backed off on those in the last 8 months or so.

Happy Hunting!!

I'm not a coin collector (I buy original vintage photographs and rare paper items) but this auction is well worth taking an interest in:

http://coins.ha.com/common/auction/c...1161-tem091511

Heritage Auctions are getting fantastic prices for the top tier coins just now - on the back of high commodity prices, their September auction in Long Beach, CA raised €34m in sales with some of the rarer coins going for high six figure sums.

Their forthcoming auction, detailed above, has some great items too and presents a good opportunity to view some high-end coins / high-end investment part of the market.

Thanks Ciaran...I wish the website was less confusing. Appreciate you thinking of us. *s

BUMP!!

Hey everyone...thought i'd give this thread a bump to see if anyone has made any good acquisitions of late..Couple months ago ,at a yard sale,i stumbled upon 2 1965 Vienna University Anniversary proof sets..got them both for $45--was kinda like getting a BOGO,as each set usually go for at least that much.

Hopefully i'll get back to work fulltime after 1st of yr so i can start looking/buying some more!

Happy New Year and Happy hunting! :)

Yes, the website can be somewhat confusing. However, it can be worth persevering with. Also, there are benefits to registering (which is free of charge) as that gives you access to their inventory of prices realised from all of their auctions over the years.

I buy occasionally from Heritage Auctions but vintage photography rather than coins.

Eastern Shore of Virginia:

to heck with today's hike, i have a thrift shop to raid!

just got 2 vf flying eagle pennies....and they still had 4 good, and very good.

going to have to go back, some of the other coins were in my ranges....pennies, nickles, dimes. got an 1864 shilling, nice markings also, but with well worn edges, legible tho, so probably at least a vg, going to have to look it up.

oh, great prices, too!

merry christmas to me
merry christmas to me!
(dancing, with huge smile)
