the most ideal place i've ever lived was Alaska, in between Wasilla & Palmer..the soil there was magical and you could grow almost anything.. i grew everything in my garden there but my favorites were carrots and peas that were so sweet i've never had anything like them since, potatoes, cabbage, spinach, and golden beets..and flowers of course..a summer feast for the eyes...perched on a hill it felt like a paradise..i was 19

Sounds idyllic......

power went out this morning..everything was so quiet..it reminded me of my time in Alaska when every morning was like this...growing your own herbs have an almost magical ability to heal your body..lavender, lemon verbena, thyme, dandelion root...the possibilities are endless..

off-grid camomile hair rinse

in a jar you're repurposing-
2 teaspoons camomile flowers picked from your garden or
in a pinch
-
1 camomile tea bag

1 c boiling water

1 tsp raw honey

2 tablespoons lemon juice or
in a pinch-

2 tablespoons white vinegar

Put your tea kettle on. Put in your glass jar your raw honey & lemon juice/white vinegar. Put in a teacup camomile flowers or tea bag and pour in boiling water. Let it steep for at least 5 minutes . Pour into your jar, stirring gently. Put on the lid and store in the refrigerator. This was enough to rinse my hair 2 times but i had extremely long hair at the time. Use as much as you need and leave on hair 10 minutes and rinse with rainwater or spring
water .....

i love all the rain..i can never have too much..i've made body butter many times, my base is usually coconut butter & wild cocoa butter, vitamin e, lavender and rose...

you will feel the silence when you live in the bush..but you don't have much time to dwell on it because you're so busy during the day, chopping wood, wrapping pipe, tending the fire(incredibly important when the temperature drops below 0°)

Log cabin build, nice to have heavy equip help but you can manage w/o it if you have a partner and you don't mind the process being a great deal slower..during one of my summers helped a friend w building a small log cabin ....peeling logs, pier block foundation, anchoring logs, chinking..etc etc..

kittygrrl 05-17-2020 12:27 PM

not a fan of notched style joinery especially with logs, i prefer the butt method and using rebar to secure the logs together..you're just asking for trouble if you notch a log on both sides..logs get wet and once you cut into the soft core of a log rot can set in quick and your join may not last 20 years....i'm not a carpenter but i come from a long line of carpenters in my family tree, boat, finish, cabinetmakers..so i have sawdust in my bones and a love for trees...maybe someday, i will build my log cabin..

kittygrrl 03-23-2021 04:19 PM

experimenting with making my own wood butter..it's so expensive so i've made my first batch and the consistency is like a paste..not exactly what i was going for but it's more protective and should last longer then what i am currently using..used it on a few things and i think i like it..we'll see

going to try to find a little cabin somewhere for a weekend

nhplowboi 09-22-2024 08:01 AM

When I started to watch the video I found it very familiar for some reason. The first reference to the area was Fogbuster Coffee which is maybe 20 miles from my house. Now in country speak, 20 miles is next door and not considered a day trip by city life.
I do live in the middle of the woods also but I am not off grid. I have a couple wood stoves in the house and run one of them often in the winter for supplemental heat. I will also do some butch cookery on them when inclined. That video is how I grew up and after traveling the country for work, how I retired. Thank you kg for showing some fall in New England and YES it is here right now.
