RIP 2012 Red Sox. Record 69-93. Good for 5th place (aka last place). Nowhere to go but up guys!

I'm hoping the A's go all the way. It's time for Billy Beane to have his day with the lowest payroll in baseball and a starting rotation of all rookie pitchers.

A's-Giants World Series would be sweet. A's-Nationals would be sweet too.

I've limited interest in modern day baseball but, as an onlooker, it appeared to be a fascinating season with many great stories including 3 perfect games, 7 no-hitters, Hamilton's 4 home run game, Rodriguez tying with Gehrig for most career Grand Slams, Moyer becoming oldest pitcher to win a game, Fister striking out 9 consecutive batters and many more incidents and stories that have slipped my mind.

It would be rather ironic were the A's to win the World Series given the recent Moneyball film. Some have made reference to a movie about the Red Sox being released shortly before they won the World Series in 2004.

Personally, although they haven't been very impressive recently, I hope that the Yankees can do it, especially as this year is the 80th anniversary of Babe Ruth's "called shot" in the 1932 Series rout of the Chicago Cubs.

More so, following on the back of Moneyball, I'm very much looking forward to the release of "42", the movie about Jackie Robinson who, of course, was the first black player to play in the major leagues:

Also, whilst on the subject of movies, as some of you likely know, I am a strong collector of original vintage baseball photography. This is one of the photos I picked up when in the United States over recent weeks. It's an original photo during the filming of one of the greatest ever baseball films of all time, Slide Kelly Slide (1927).

It shows Hollywood actor William Haines as a baseball player, pictured with a number of real life baseball legends of the era, Tony Lazzeri, my favourite player of all-time, Bob Meusel and, his brother, Irish Meusel. For the purpose of the film, all these players are pictured here in NY Yankees uniforms, even though Irish was actually a NY Giants player !!

Well, Oaklands miracle season came to an end. I am bummed but it is nice to see the Tigers humming along.

Giants ousted the Reds. Wow. They have been battling all year. Nice comeback.

Nationals-Cards, Yanks-Orioles do or die time.

macele 10-12-2012 08:03 AM

i hated to see the reds go. i've always loved cal ripken jr. i'm hollerin' real loud for the orioles lol. not a yankee fan, so that gives me extra hollers.

Great to see the Yankees make it through - the way it should be every year.

Now for revenge against Detroit after last year's defeat.

Kobi 10-13-2012 04:24 AM

Sabathia pitched a gem of a game! Not sure if they can beat a hyped up Tiger team tho.

I still cannot believe the Nationals. Two outs in the 9th, up by 2 runs, and they blow it giving up 4 runs. Have to wonder what the manager was thinking by leaving that pitcher in there.

ruffryder 10-13-2012 10:15 AM

Let's go Orioles over the Yankees. Yeahhhh Boiiiissss!

macele 10-13-2012 10:36 AM

yeah those yankees won. puh! and they will not get these tigers by the tail! :)

i didn't get to watch the nationals/cardinals. i like both of those teams. so i'm going with the cardinals/tigers ... tigers to win it!

Kobi 10-13-2012 10:58 AM

So, it is the Cards vs the Giants, and the Yanks vs the Tigers.

Hm, have no faves here. Might have to go with the Tigers only cuz they havent won in ages.

ruffryder 10-13-2012 11:04 AM

guess I'm out of the loop. Thought the Orioles were still in it and hoping they would kick the Yankees out. :|

I'll go for the Cardinals or Giants for the win!

The way it should be every year is the Indians in the postseason, but was not to be.:eyebat:

Seriously, I have no favorites, but since the Yankees, Giants and Cards have all won in the last three years, I say it's the Tigers' turn.

Hack 10-13-2012 05:25 PM

This lifelong, die-hard Tigers fan cannot wait to see a lot of this in the ALCS:

That would be A-Rod striking out. And this was shot at Yankees Stadium, so those are Yankees fans booing him.

Tigers have superior starting pitching, but a weaker bullpen. It's going to come down to who brings the bats. And we already know that won't be A-Rod.

Leigh 10-13-2012 06:15 PM

I have to say the Giants and the Yankees :)

The good thing is that baseball doesn't work in that egalitarian way .... if it did, the Red Sox wouldn't have had to wait 86 years to win the series :D

Yankees will win it this year.

Kobi 10-13-2012 09:45 PM

Just checked on the Tigers-Yanks game. Bottom of the 9th, 2 out, Tigers up 4-0.

Tiger closer gives up not one but two 2 run home runs. Score now tied.

:seeingstars:

Think I will head to bed and check on this in the am. LOL.

macele 10-13-2012 09:52 PM

what the hell kobi! detroit had it won LOL. good freakin' grief charlie brown lol.

what a trade raul ibanez has been from the phillies. was it last year or this year he was traded to the yankees?

macele 10-13-2012 09:53 PM

goodnight. i'm not going yet lol.

anotherbutch 10-13-2012 10:25 PM

Cardinals all the way! We won it all last year.... and looking for a repeat in '12!

Kobi 10-14-2012 06:24 AM

Glad to see the Tigers pulled it out in the 12th. Was afraid they would pull a Nationals and leave an ineffectual closer in. The bullpen did well.

Nasty injury to Jeter tho. That was one video I didnt need to see. To lose such a tough and experienced competitor is heartbreaking. Then again, it might provide the Yanks with the spark they need to win one for the captain.

ruffryder 10-14-2012 07:44 AM

damnnn Jeter broke his ankle. ouch!

Kobi 10-17-2012 05:06 AM

Tiger are up 3-0. Verlander pitched another gem last night. I expected the Yankees to put up more of a fight. Tigers can win it tonight. Tho if they do, they have a while to wait for the NL winner to be determined. The time off makes me worry about losing momentum.

Giants and Cards tied 1-1. This might end up being a hard fought series.

Gráinne 10-17-2012 03:46 PM

The Yankees' batters are performing poorly but Sabathia (sp?) is fully rested and probably their best pitcher. It really depends how the Tigers match with him.

Only one other MLB team has ever come back 0-3 and won. Three guesses who the losers were; the winners shall not be mentioned on my keyboard ;).

macele 10-17-2012 04:34 PM

if the yankees don't win with sabathia, especially going up against max scherzer ... well that would say a lot. not good, of course.

i don't agree with benching a rod. i don't like him, ... way too much ego for me. but he is a go to player, and coach played him all year and won with him in slumps. i say always go with what got you here. a rod has had way worse years and still played.

go tigers!

i don't know guihong. i will look it up lol.

If memory serves, the only team who has come back from 0-3 was the Red Sox against the Yankees in 2004. The Sox then went on to sweep the Cardinals in the World Series for their first title in a gazillion years. Half my grey hair is from that series.

Kobi got it :)

In the meantime, it's still raining in St.Louis :(. I suppose it might be called soon.

Kobi 10-18-2012 05:43 PM

Congrats to the Tigers for sweeping the Yanks and making it to the world series. Sabathia sucked the big one today and Scherzer was awesome. Tigers pitching gave up only 2 hits today.

Now, it's waiting time while the Cards and Giants battle it out.

Gráinne 10-18-2012 05:45 PM

A great sweep by the Tigers, but I hope they don't lose momentum while they wait into next week. OTOH, they'll be rested and whoever they face will not.

Kobi 10-19-2012 05:24 AM

Cardinals made it look easy last night. Giants bullpen made it look hard.

If the Cards can wrap it up tonight, both they and the Tigers can keep their momentum going.

ruffryder 10-19-2012 10:13 AM

A Rod too busy adding to his binders of women from the stands..

Yankees lose ! and Congrats to the Tigers and good luck to all the teams standing still!

Kobi 10-21-2012 09:04 PM

Wow. Giants staged an excellent comeback in this series. Now tied 3-3. Game 7 tomorrow.

Vogelsong was magnificent tonight. Hoping Cain throws another gem tomorrow.

Kobi 10-22-2012 08:01 PM

Wow. Giants are up 7-0 in the 4th inning. These guys look awesome tonight. Nice to see folks other than Scutaro and Sandoval getting the hits.

Amazing comeback. Wonder if AtLast is at this game?

macele 10-22-2012 08:21 PM

where is atlast?

i've been giving my rah rah's to the cardinals. but it's looking rough. gambaru!

i'll turn it all over to the tigers later tonight lol.

Kobi 10-22-2012 09:47 PM

Giants vs Tigers! World Series starts Wednesday

Freakin awesome! Even the 9th inning monsoon was a nice touch.

Giants not only won 3 straight with their backs against the wall but they held the Cards to 1 total run in those games. Hoping Scutaro ends up being the MVP.

Congrats Giants fans!

Giants and Tigers are evenly matched in pitching and hitting. Should be an awesome series.

-Red-Flag- 10-22-2012 09:49 PM

Its going to be a great world series !

Kobi 10-24-2012 02:04 PM

World Series starts tonight, 8pm est on FOX.

I would like both the Tigers and Giants to win.

Tigers cuz they pulled it together this season, invested in their team, and this team believes they can win. I like that in a competitor.

Giants cuz the are the comeback kids this year. Never say die seems to be their philosophy and ya gotta love that. Plus, I want Marco Scutaro to win one as payback to the Red Sox for trading him last off season. He already won the NLCS MVP. Go Marco!

macele 10-24-2012 02:23 PM

there may be more, i can't think of, ... but hunter pence was traded this season from the phillies to the giants. omar infante and anibal sanchez, this season to detroit from miami. good moves. i like all of these players and marco scutaro.

looking forward to tonight.

macele 10-24-2012 08:07 PM

well that just tic'd my pic! what the shoot fire!

lol there's tomorrow.

Kobi 10-24-2012 08:56 PM

Giants are continuing to steamroll ahead. Sandoval with 3 homers. Scutaro just doing his thing. Even Zito was impressive tonight.

Tigers are looking too well rested. And the Giants had Verlanders number tonight which is not a good sign.

Greyson 10-24-2012 09:08 PM

This Dodger die hard fan says "Go Tigers!" Besides be at odds with the SF Giants for a lifetime because of my allegience to my home team the Dodgers; The Detroit Tigers deserve the World Series. If they don't win it this year, I am happy they made it this far.
