This is brilliant!
Women and Men, as Portrayed in Advertising They have taken and switched genders on a lot of the advertising we see every day. The results are hilarious! But it also makes you think... |

I think this is brilliant in showing how the patriarchy sends messages to both women and men as to what their respective roles and places are via advertising. I do not find anything about it to be hilarious. Even switching "roles" makes it look like a parody which further insults women. It is a sad commentary on the plight of women in the world. Im thinking women should be outraged not chuckling. I also think if women find this amusing, it is a testament to how we internalize the sexism that is thrown at us everyday. |

You missed the point. It is not ridiculous. It is not absurd. It is freakin reality. Advertising, especially in this video is showing very much how women are seen and used as objects to sell products. It also demonstrates how women are seen and used as sex objects. It gives a message to both women and to masculine people. This is sexism. There is nothing funny about it. This stuff reinforces the ideas that leads to behavior like rape, like sexually assaulting incapacitated teenage girls and taking pictures for facebook, and all the rest of the sexist crap women put up with including women thinking this sexism is amusing. You finding it amusing doesn't surprise me. We have tangled before on sexism and how butches can be as sexist as cis men. |

There's just something so intriguing about this picture (aside from my fetish for a femme wearing lipstick / lip gloss)....

I don't believe that Ascot missed the point at all. In fact, if you read back, she clearly states "I think the very fact that it is so absurd will help highlight the gross disparities between how men and women are portrayed." Please tell me how you believe she's missed the mark? And, I do agree with you that it is "freakin reality". But it is also ridiculous and absurd. And, let's look at the fact that TheDivaherrrself stated, and I quote "The results are hilarious." She, a woman, who identifies in a feminine way, found the end result of the switch to be somewhat amusing. Does this mean that she missed the point too? I think not. As for finding it amusing, it is. Not the blatant sexist advertising and misuse of women, instead, the use of men and their (the video makers) remaking of the scenes that originally held women. They are highlighting just how ludicrous such advertising truly is. And, doing it with a bit of humour, the kind that brings us all on to a level playing field. Where we, both male and female alike, are able to truly look at a situation and say, hey, that's wrong, stupid and demoralizing. And one last note, it is an individuals right to find something 'amusing', whether or not another person finds it to be so as well. But, may I suggest in the future that we all truly try to see another persons perspective before making snap judgements about others and their thoughts and beliefs? Just my opinion of course, to which I am most definitely entitled. I hope you'll take this in the vein that it is meant. Absolutely not as a criticism, but instead as a way of voicing my opinion in a respectful and open manner. Thanks so much for taking the time to listen. It's truly appreciated! : ) |

http://media-cache-ak1.pinimg.com/55...27b17cbd59.jpg Like racism, sexism and misogyny are insidious cancers in the world. They exist and are perpetuated, often times, inadvertently, because it has become a part of who we are as people whether we are of the female or male id's. If we don't own it, if we don't address it, if we don't point it out when it happens, if we don't call it what it is, how are we suppose to change it? If that video was about racism rather than sexism would there be a different reaction? Would POC think it was amusing, hilarious, and leveling the playing field? Or would they see it as belittling, derogatory, and degrading? The irony in all this? Take a look at the posts after that video.....the "hindsight" ones. Are those amusing? Hilarious? Objectification, regardless of how it is manifested, is a harmful psychological and societal phenomenon. Objectification isn't just something feminists came up with to confuse chauvinistic pigs, it's an actual psychological term. Researchers interested in the topic have shown that "objectification theory" is the process by which a societal focus on the female body as object impacts women’s understanding of their own bodies as defined through external characteristics rather than internal cues. Women come to understanding their bodies through the perspective of an outsider rather than through a process of introspective thought. Because of this mind-set, women tend to be more critical of themselves because they are taught to police their bodies. As a woman, I happen to think women are amazing. And, its not because women are the sum total of their body parts, or how their body parts can be used to increase a profit margin. It is because of what is between their ears, what is in their hearts, and who they are as people. Then again, I can be shallow like that ;). |
