40's

This is way before my time. But this music will always have a very special and personal meaning to me.

There are several channels on youtube where vintage record collectors record/play their vinyl. I've discovered so much that new-old music that way!

I really enjoyed this piece, too. It has charm. :)

I have more good old fashioned jazz on my ipod than any other type of music. Ella is my favorite singer of all time. Lady Day, Duke, Count Basie, Cole Porter, Pops, give me those any day over the stuff that's on the radio today. I like contemporary jazz artists too, such as Jane Monheit, John Pizzarelli, Michael Buble, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy and Harry Connick Jr. This music is pure magic!

love this thread!!!

My fave is Benny Goodman's "Puttin on the Ritz", which, unfortunately, I can only find as part of a tap solo video (coincidentally, she's quite good, but i really just wanted the song).

Other favorites I've been known to sing along with in the car are:

Janis Segal: Bei Mir Bist Du Schoen

Etta James: At Last (is this too recent?)

Billie Holiday: The Very Thought of You

I'm going to have to go home and check my ipod for more, this thread is great, thank you!!!

Newer group, but a pleasant blast from the past:

I am also guilty of loving early 60's rat pack

Cry Me a River is a great song. It has been done in several versions, most notably, Ella Fitzgerald, Julie London and Joe Cocker. I love them all but think Julie London's is probably the best.
I love big band and am fond of Glen Miller, Benny Goodman and the Andrews Sisters in particular. I recall being in high school and buying The Boogie Woogie Bugle boy by Bette Midler and while playing it one night my dad stuck his head in the door because all he had ever heard from my room was stuff like Alice Cooper and Led Zeppelin. He asked what it was because he thought it was the Andrews sisters and that was HIS music. We bonded there for just a sec I think.

For fans of music from the 1920-1950's this is a great radio program airing live on Saturday nights from 7 pm to 12 midnight. You can also listen to it during the week thru the archived files. Big band, swing and more. I love it.

Jane Monheit is pure magic!!

Now if I could just get her to leave her husband and marry me.. hehe. But seriously, she is one of the best contemporary jazz singers today.

Thought I'd revive this thread...

Hopefully some folks out there will appreciate this immortal music. It doesn't matter how much time has gone by, this music stands on it's own because it is beautiful and enduring. I hope some of you will agree, and post some of your favorites.

I just discovered this artist today, and I am madly in love with her singing & style. Her phrasing is incredible, and her clear and crystal voice is just wonderful. I hope you like her as well. Here she is world - Maxine Sullivan. African American b. 1911, d. 1987, but her music endures!

This recording made in the 1950's is not quite...

at the 'Big Band' era, but it was a song written by the great Hoagy Carmichael, back in the 30's I believe. So many have recorded this song, but I love Doris Day's rendition - I guess because I just love Doris Day. :)
