Today I took myself to a movie I really wanted to see and wasn't disappointed.

I saw The Imitation Game. I think Benedict Cumberback was amazing. Interesting, tense story that I won't totally go into but highly recommend.

Gemme 12-26-2014 08:15 PM

I saw Into the Woods tonight. I forgot it was Friday and opted for a 4 o'clock showing. For someone that prefers empty to near empty theatres, it was fairly crowded. I did enjoy being one of the many who chuckled or guffawed at certain points, though. There were some unexpected funny bits that I liked as well.

I never saw the stage version so I don't know how closely they stuck to the original but I did like it. I think they could have kept it under 2 hours but it was good.

One of the previews was for this movie, which I think I will see.

Christmas Cinema

Big Eyes.

Fascinating and somewhat sad story, overall. Time period induced. Amy Adams is a reliably good actress and I dig her. Tim Burton moments, for sure. It was okay. This song was quite compelling from the film.

Tried to watch "The one I love" on Netflix and couldn't get into it.
I love indie movies, but this one meh.

So, I watched In your eyes (Netflix) def recommend. Trailer below

Also watched "Big Sur" Movie about the
awesome Beat Poet Jack Kerouac.
Damn good movie.

ahk 12-27-2014 08:14 PM

I saw unbroken.
Intense but powerful with good motivation.

C0LLETTE 12-28-2014 12:28 AM

Mystery Road on Netflicks ( Is that how it's spelled?)... About an Aboriginal policeman, racism, in Australia.

deathbypoem 12-28-2014 02:51 PM

Checked out Refuge on Netflix. I enjoyed it.
It's a tad bittersweet and melancholy.

Did I mention the soundtrack is amazing? :tea:

gotoseagrl 12-28-2014 03:23 PM

Cool, glad to know it's worth checking out as i have had this in my list, right after In Your Eyes lol.

SUCKAGE

imperfect_cupcake 12-28-2014 07:40 PM

Cloudburst, because my mom wanted to see it. Half way through I turned to my mom and said "omg this is fucking awful."
Mom: yes. It is kind of, isn't it.
Me: you mind if we don't bother finishing it?
Mom: no, it's a waste of time. Let's play some cards then.

There you go. I thought it was awful and even my mom couldn't be arsed to finish watching it either.

So far the only dyke love story I've watched that wasn't hideous was Fire (Indio-canadian), Amie & Jaguar (Germany) and Bound (though bound wasn't hideous, it wasn't exactly fabulous either. I know lots of people love it because it has a butch and a femme in it, but I actually care about dialogue, plot, editing, character development... You know stuff that makes a good film, not just a kind of entertaining one that doesn't ask anything of you. Yes, I can be a snob).

imperfect_cupcake 12-28-2014 07:50 PM

However, the one I watched just before was "the way I live now"
British film about an American girls that chooses to stay in England as WWIII breaks out. It's not loud music, plot shoved in your face crap, it's actually jarring.

Well, it was for me, being a gen X. There is a scene where a nuclear bomb is dropped before war is declared. You don't see the bomb. But the distant effects that are eerie, subtle and very, very frightening, I used to have nightmares about as a teen and in my 20s. They captured my Cold War Bomb nightmares incredibly well. It actually gave me goose bumps.

The ending was a tiny bit of a let down as it seemed to get wrapped up very quickly and suddenly. Bit of a disappointment, the end, but the movie was very well done.
Two fucked up teen agers, both very believable characters, especially the anxious, anorexic, angry, american girl.

I do love a film that has a strong, believable, female hero.

MrSunshine 12-28-2014 07:51 PM

Hey crooked cupcake :)

You might like Tru Love. Nexflix if you have it. It's not tacky or horrible. Little humor and a little drama. I only hit pause once to roll my eyes. That really says something!

cinnamongrrl 12-30-2014 05:46 AM

Last night I watched The Counselor....

I almost wish I could clean my eyes and unsee some of the stuff I saw.....

I love Cameron Diaz...but I wanted to see her blown up by the end of the movie....

I really think I was waiting for a big ending where the Counselor uses his sharp legal skills to exact revenge and bring about a happy ending. Then I realized, this movie isn't that old. That just doesn't happen these days....

Gemme 12-30-2014 06:11 AM

I wanted something I didn't have to think about while I watched it.

I wound up with this:

It was not as horrible as I imagined and I actually laughed a couple of times.

Fancy 12-30-2014 08:55 AM

Finally.

Finally, finally, finally watched The Hours. Must reread some Woolf now and watch it again to get all the references I missed the first time.

homoe 12-30-2014 03:49 PM

Conflict 1945

We watched this old Humphrey Bogart movie last night. Moved a bit slow, but all in all it was a pretty good psychological thriller!:movieguy:

imperfect_cupcake 12-30-2014 06:18 PM

Europa Report- "hard" science fiction (accurate, scientifically sound, well researched) which is so rare these days... It's a thriller and *incredibly* well written and well done. I bloody loved it.

homoe 01-01-2015 07:18 PM

The movie marathon continues...

We watched the Equalizer with Denzel, Mr. Morgan's Last Love with Michael Caine, and Last Train to Lisbon with Jeremy Irons. All were rather good

MrSunshine 01-01-2015 07:22 PM

Meh

I waffled on this one.

Glad I opted not to pay to see it.

I saw this NYE.

Excellent!

I loved the dragon classification breakdown in the special features.

deathbypoem 01-02-2015 10:22 AM

"The Captive"

It was OK. Nothing I would write about.
Something a bit disturbing though.
However, I have seen much better acting.

snowbrdr303 01-02-2015 10:30 AM

Fury

I saw this in the theater too but just got it on Amazon.com early release the other night.

Very intense, very psychological war film (graphic but with good reason). Definitely one of my top picks for 2014.

Kelt 01-02-2015 10:35 AM

I watched Life of Brian last night. It had been forever since I'd seen it.
Howled. :cheesy:

Logicaly 01-02-2015 02:14 PM

I watched quite a few movies yesterday.

The Wolf of Wall Street - Most excellent, I feel like Leo was perfect the role. He usually casts well when he does a movie.

No Pain No Gain - totally stupid, would not watch again. I feel like the acting was terrible, the plot was completely stupid and the way it was all setup made the movie hard to follow.

Don Jon - Another great movie, I feel like one of the characters could have used a little more character development, but otherwise it was good.

Mean Girls 2 - It was nice to see it done differently from the first one, obviously low budget film, but it is not a bad movie.

Forest Gump - A classic, can't go wrong with this one.

homoe 01-02-2015 06:04 PM

Not so good........

:movieguy:

Always Woodstock (2014)

Don't waste your time, another one of those where the previews are the best parts IMHO at least

Blade 01-02-2015 11:02 PM

Madea Christmas

homoe 01-03-2015 04:16 PM

Lucky Them........

Toni Collette, Thomas Haden Church Oliver Platt

A rock journalist is assigned to track down her ex-boyfriend by her boss.

I normally enjoy these actors and actresses but even they couldn't breathe life into this thing! We don't know much about the past, I mean why this guy left and made it look like perhaps he had committed suicide and SPOILER ALERT even when she finds him, we never find out why!

Some parts of the movie were shot in Seattle so we focused on picking out streets and landmarks we knew:popcorn:

I say lucky them who avoided this movie and watched something else:hangloose:

Ginger 01-03-2015 05:23 PM

Last night I saw Mr. Turner.

Timothy Spall is hard to look at for three hours. Maybe if he weren't constantly emitting a thick, phlegmy grunt, I'd feel differently.

That said, the landscapes are breathtaking.

And I've always loved his work. J.M.W. Turner, I mean. The painter.

ksrainbow 01-03-2015 05:52 PM

Nemo!

Finding Nemo!

Can not wait for "Finding Dory" :fishswim: !

Gemme 01-03-2015 08:46 PM

I just finished The Big Year. I'm not a birder and didn't know that that was what the movie was about but I was intrigued at the line up of Steve Martin, Jack Black and Owen Wilson.

I actually enjoyed the movie. Sure, it wasn't the best one I ever saw, but it was well done and had a message about the cost of our passions.

Blade 01-04-2015 01:17 PM

Heaven is for real. Good movie based on a true story. It moves a little slow, but its based on a true story, real life moves slow

homoe 01-04-2015 07:16 PM

The movie binge continues...

A documentary called Standing in the Shadow of Motown. Excellent and the music is fantastic!!!

The Fox. This is a bit dated now but still worth a look at. This is from 1967 BEFORE lesbian movies could have a happy ending..lol

Wrestling Ernest Hemingway (Shirley MacLaine)We enjoyed it very much, check it out and see what you think

JDeere 01-04-2015 07:18 PM

Evil Dead 2 from 1987

Laughable now but was scary as hell back then!

Yet Bruce Campbell makes the movie.

Orema 01-05-2015 08:44 AM

Barfly (1987)
____________

Barfly has held up over time and it's as good as I remember. Written by Charles Bukowski and somewhat autobiographical (I think), it's about people who unapologetically live on the edges of society. Loved the chemistry and honesty between Henry (Mickey Rourke) and Wanda (Faye Dunnaway)—job well done by both.

It's vulgar, violent, insightful, funny, sad, and good.

Bukowski makes an appearance in one of the bar scenes.

Weird, I *just* rewatched that yesterday. I saw it when it came out. There was an evening of charles bukowski at the Rio (the sort of funk repetory theater here that does readings, bands, cult films, animation fests, B-fests etc) and I couldn't go as i didnt have the dosh, so decided to watch it on my own.

It was good. I love mickey rourke and fay dunnaway... both incredibly good actors. bit short for me. I forgot it was more a 3-4 days in the life of.

imperfect_cupcake 01-06-2015 02:35 AM

Starred Up.

Incredible. Really intense, gripping, real to life. Starred up is the term used in the UK for young offenders that get moved up to adult prison early.

It's a UK prison drama and very well done. well acted and very real plot. the violence is not gratuitous and it's not a moral fairy tale like so many hollywood flicks are. That gets on my nerves sometimes. It's just a raw and honest story written by a man who worked in the UK prisons as a volunteer therapist.

http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/star...h=starred%20up

you can find the trailer there as well.

I love rottentomatoes as a review site, btw, my personal tastes usually run along par with the group reviews done. Sometimes there is a huge discrepancy between reviewers and audience grading - which is interesting...

I tend to follow that rather than netflix (some incredibly good movies on netflix that won tons of international film festival accolades get 2/3 stars and some of the SHITTEST things I've seen gets 4.5 stars) or imbd. Better descriptions, better reviews.

imperfect_cupcake 01-06-2015 02:47 AM

I really do want to see Mr Turner and The Imitation game.

I love biopics.

I loved Wilde with steven fry and jude law.

Id like to see a decent one about Tesla and one about Dirac

Cailin 01-06-2015 07:51 AM

Hunger games, Mockingjay

I'm a huge fan of the books. Even tho i like the first 2 better, i did still enjoy part 1. I cannot wait for part 2. Thats when s**t gets real in pan am.

I use Netflix also and have added an extention to Chrome called Flix Plus that adds the ratings for Rotten Tomatoes as well as IMBD to the Netflix rating and they are live links for a straight click over to which ever you want to read in-depth. I like getting to see all three lined up together for an over-all rating.
