Suspect older movie with Cher which turned out to be very good:popcorn:

A judge commits suicide, and his secretary is found murdered. A homeless deaf-mute man is arrested for her murder. Public defender Kathleen is assigned by the court as his lawyer. She sets to find the real killer, and gets help from the a congressional advisor, together they discover a dangerous circle of corruption in high places.

Saw "The Imitation Game". Liked it very much though I wish they'd spent more time on the "innards" of how they cracked the code and, also, more about how he was hounded into suicide by homophobia.

Roger Ebert

Life Itself....via CNN.

A very personal and heartwarming documentary.

I went to see Wild after work today. It was good. The book, of course, is better.

QueenofSmirks 01-06-2015 08:14 PM

Chef -- and I thoroughly enjoyed it :)

JDeere 01-07-2015 12:05 AM

Not really a movie but it's called The BULLY Project from 2012. It follows 5 families as they go through a school year while being bullied. Heart breaking and a tear jerker.

Daktari 01-07-2015 05:20 AM

Captain America...what a pile of crap. It lived down to expectations.

Kelt 01-07-2015 09:53 AM

A Prophet 2009

From Netflix "After refusing to snitch, 18-year-old Arab Malik (Tahar Rahim) is thrown into a French prison, where the Corsican mafia rules with a firm fist. The obedient newcomer slowly rises through the organization's ranks but soon begins to double-cross his superiors."

At 2.5 hrs I thought it could have done well in 2.0, but given the number of awards it got I seem to be in the minority. I enjoyed it and would watch it again. Apparently there is a remake afoot, I'll bet it's american and I'll bet they screw it up, watch this french version.

Young Adults

Unless you're a huge fan of Patton Oswalt and want to see one of his finest roles ever, I'd skip this one!

imperfect_cupcake 01-09-2015 01:16 PM

I'm hoping to see more "hard" science fiction.

Interstellar is being attempted to be sold as such but it's not. It's full of pseudoscience - I can enjoy things for being fun, but very irritated when it's being hoisted as something it's not.

Daktari 01-09-2015 03:26 PM

Trashy goodness...

Burlesque [2010]

Fabulous for watching scantily clad girls dancing.

I think Cher's lips get a credit for having a life of their own.

Even the Aguilera girl isn't too bad until she tries to be sexy...or sing! :|

Kätzchen 01-09-2015 05:00 PM

Over the holidays, I watched a couple of films:

North by Northwest (1959) and Donnie Darko (2001).

cinnamongrrl 01-09-2015 09:08 PM

Tonight I watched Bobby, Emilio Esrevez' film about Bobby Kennedy....fictitious film that is...

Kelt 01-10-2015 12:59 AM

I just re-watched 'Soldiers girl' I hadn't seen it since it came out a dozen years ago in 2003.
So glad that our military can serve openly now.

The Hobbit: Battle of Five Armies.

Orema 01-10-2015 07:05 AM

I wanted a laugh and streamed The Odd Couple last night. Finniky Felix and grumpy Oscar didn't let me down.

deathbypoem 01-11-2015 12:09 PM

this was such an excellent movie.

I have also been digging around in

Mysteries of the Museum. So good!

Logicaly 01-11-2015 12:42 PM

Went and saw The Hobbit: The Battle of Five Armies

*Anya* 01-11-2015 12:57 PM

We saw Predestination last night.

Complex, confusing, mind-bending/twisting and interesting science fiction.

We liked it but had to talk about it afterwards to try to figure it out.

Star-turn by Sarah Snook.

The premise sounds like Majority Report but it is different.

From imdb:

PREDESTINATION chronicles the life of a Temporal Agent (Ethan Hawke) sent on an intricate series of time-travel journeys designed to prevent future killers from committing their crimes.

Now, on his final assignment, the Agent must stop the one criminal that has eluded him throughout time and prevent a devastating attack in which thousands of lives will be lost.

Pride (2014)

It was good. Interesting story and insight into a little known history and how you can find political/social support in the least expected places. The acting was a little weak despite a good cast, some of the jokes fall flat. The studio and distributor of the DVD release here in the states has received a lot of flack for removing gay reference from the DVD, which I find almost impossible to follow considering the entire movie contains gay themes. Anyway, good gay flick for 2014.

Gemme 01-11-2015 04:59 PM

I saw this yesterday. OMG, so good.

So. So. Good.

I absolutely LOVED this movie!!!!

Orema 01-11-2015 06:30 PM

Whiplash

Teacher uses brutal methods to bring out the best in his students.

I enjoyed it even though it had a typical hollywood ending. It will probably earn an oscar or two.

homoe 01-13-2015 03:52 PM

Remember Me...

I found this listing in a Leonard Maltin movie book so thought I'd check it out.
Moved sorta slow, hard to figure out what was what, but boy the end sure threw you a curve ball! Check it out and see what you think:popcorn:

A romantic drama centered on two new lovers: Tyler, whose parents have split in the wake of his brother's suicide, and Ally, who lives each day to the fullest since witnessing her mother's murder:movieguy:

Wolf of Wall Street

For some reason I was looking forward to this. This was one of those I put on and it flunked the 30 minute test. I couldn't figure what was wrong so I looked at the reviews online to see if I was thinking of something else. Nope, great reviews all lined up. Cast, check, potentially interesting story, check, directed by Martin Scorsese, yep.

So, back I went since obviously I was just off to a bumpy start. Rich frat boy party scenes one after the other. 3 hours of it, it took two evenings for me to get through it. I wish they would have taken the story line (all 90 minutes of it), sprinkled in several shorter hooker fests (say, 30 minutes) and come out with a more interesting 2 hour film that would have been a decent portrait of the times and this man. It's the other full hour of what seemed to be purely gratuitous party/drug footage that irritated me.

I want my money back, and it was free. :movieguy:

Obviously my opinion is in the minority, so enjoy.

Daktari 01-13-2015 10:09 PM

Unpopular opinion or not, I'm with you Kelt, I didn't like it. I think I lasted 15mins and knew it wasn't for me. Lots of the right ingredients but not to my taste.

I watched Whiplash t'other night. It was really enjoyable as Orema said. Not earth shattering but a decent movie. Another recommend for it from me.

I had missed this preview earlier, it looks like something I will like. Sadly, I can't get it on Netflix yet so it's in the 'saved' queue. Hmm.

Garavito: The World’s Worst Serial Killer

20th centuries most prolific serial killer is largely unknown throughout the world, though he brutally murdered at least 140 children, posing as a priest or teacher he lured poor young boys away from their families, raped them and murdered them. Committing his crimes in various regions of Columbia South America in the 1990's he managed to elude authorities for nine long years.

VERY SAD and sickening

Ditto here. I gave it 15 to 20 minutes and jumped ship. I'd rather watch a good movie 10 times than a bad one once. Obviously, we're in the minority. (shrug)

This made me think of the movie Perfume (though Perfume is not based on a true story and neither is it documentary). I started watching Perfume but had to stop. I've watched some films on serial killers (Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Silence of the Lambs, some mess on Jeffrey Dahmer, and of course Psycho), but I just can't do it anymore. Especially when the victims are children. Thank goodness they caught his ass.

I should have followed my gut. My normal line is 20 minutes and I had already gone over. It was like a bad investment you just watch keep sinking.

Maybe I just needed a reminder.

I've got to learn how to sling things around to different devices, especially since I'm considering the projector option. Thanks for the resource!

Boyhood....

I know there has been lots of buzz about this flick, but IMHO huge waste of time!

First, the movie never ends up anywhere. Second, maybe I should of taken a cue by the title Boyhood! There is also a daughter in the movie, but not as much focus is shown on her life as the sons. Third, outside of showing how these young kids age, I'm not sure what Linklater was trying to do!

Fancy 01-15-2015 07:46 AM

Took the family to see The Imitation Game and 3 outa 4 of us cried before the end. What a powerful and well produced story. I know my daughter just wanted to see her crush Benedict, and I was skeptical, but he knocked it outa the park. Great performances all round.

pamela 01-15-2015 09:38 AM

i just saw the recent Hunger Games film. it was good. part 2 should be fine

Appropriate Behavior

Hirin is struggling to become an ideal Persian daughter, politically correct bisexual and hip young Brooklynite but fails miserably in her attempt at all identities. Being without a cliché to hold onto can be a lonely experience.

Read a good review about the movie, previews looked good too, but well just didn't do much for me at least. Check it out and see what you think:popcorn:

"Into the Woods"
I love Sondheim and fairy tales so what's not to love right?
Wrong
I felt like I was being beat about the head and shoulders with the same song over and over and over AND it just carried on FOREVER.
I left before it was over, so disappointing. A big fat thumbs down
(I did adore Johnny Depp as the big bad wolf though, rrrrraawwrrr)
