Anyone ever had mornings, or whole weekends like this?

When I was a bitty boi, my mom put her hair in curlers, you remember these curlers, seemed like they were made of barbed wire. Sharp to the touch. Anyway, one morning I recall vividly she had forgotten she had put the curlers in the night before, passed the mirror and had a minor cardiac event. Laughed so hard, she was not amused.

This Glow-In-The-Dark Bike Path Is Powered By The Sun

On the right track to preventing nighttime accidents.

http://www.solaripedia.com/images/large/6567.jpg

Poland is kicking the concept of a traditional bike trail to the curb.

On Sept. 23, the rural town of Lidzbark Warminski opened a short biking path that glows blue in the dark. Charging by day via the sun, the special section of trail is a new addition to a larger recreation path that leads up to Wielochowskie Lake.

European engineering company TPA sp. z o.o designed the technology that lights this segment of the bike path. The asphalt contains synthetic particles called “luminophores,” which at night emit power captured from sunlight, creating the electric blue hue. TPA says the glow lasts up to 10 hours, according to Polish newspaper Gazeta Olsztyńska.

http://www.thisiscolossal.com/wp-con.../10/path-3.jpg

This segment of bike trail isn’t just pretty; it’s also supposed to be practical.

“We hope that the glowing bicycle path will help prevent bicycle and pedestrian accidents at night,” Igor Ruttmar, TPA president and CEO, told ABC News. “It’s a problem here in Poland, especially in the areas farther from the cities that are darker and more invisible in the night.”

Reconstructed 3D Home Reveals Ancient Pompeii

This is an Ace-inspired post. Thanks for telling me about this, Ace—very cool, indeed! Too bad the Internets ate the post you wrote.

=========================

This reconstructed 3D home reveals ancient Pompeii before Vesuvius struck

The calm before the storm.
PETER DOCKRILL 5 OCT 2016

Archaeologists have virtually reconstructed an ancient Pompeii house in 3D, revealing the beauty of a well-to-do Italian home almost 2,000 years ago.

The project, which recreates the dwelling of a wealthy Pompeii banker called Caecilius Iucundus, gives us our best look yet at what living conditions were like in the famous city before the devastating eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD.

The reconstruction builds upon the work of the Swedish Pompeii Project, which began in 2000 at the Swedish Institute in Rome and is now overseen by researchers at Sweden's Lund University.

Scientists led by archaeologist Anne-Marie Leander Touati conducted 3D scanning of a Pompeii city block during fieldwork expeditions between 2011 and 2012, and the plush home you can see in the video below is one of the first 3D models to be completed as part of the virtual restoration:

"By combining new technology with more traditional methods, we can describe Pompeii in greater detail and more accurately than was previously possible," says one of the researchers, digital archaeologist Nicoló Dell´Unto.

The city block the researchers scanned with hand-held laser scanners and a drone is called Insula V1, and was chosen because it was situated at the crossing of two of Pompeii's main thoroughfares.

Because of this centralised location, the researchers say it was a privileged position for both commercial activity and stately living.

This helps to explain some of the grandeur of Caecilius Iucundus's envisaged living space – at least, before the fiery destruction wreaked by Mount Vesuvius, that is, which is estimated to have claimed more than 2,000 lives.

The researchers acknowledge that details of the virtual home come from a variety of sources.

Some of these sources are objective – such as decorations that are still preserved on site – while others are more speculative, based on archaeologists' best interpretations of what the architecture and lifestyle in ancient Pompeii really looked like nearly 2 millennia ago.

In the interests of authenticity, the researchers haven't populated the reconstruction with virtual family members, visitors, and slaves, but they say the large dwelling would have been filled with people both day and night.

While Iucundus wasn't part of the ruling political elite in Pompeii, we know from his surviving correspondence that he was a very wealthy man.

His home was designed to let as much light in as possible to enable him to work, with the house's most decorated room being called the tabularium, where Iucundus would have seen to his affairs.

Insula V1 features two large wealthy estates in addition to the banker's home, plus a tavern, a laundry, a bakery, and several gardens – one of which had taps for a fountain left running at the time of the eruption, the researchers say.

While the primary purpose of the video is to provide the public with a glimpse into the conditions of ancient Pompeii life, the overall aim of the research is more scientific – the team will be sharing their entire 3D data set and workflow, "to make the reconstruction process completely transparent and available for researchers and students".

Awesome – and that means it's possible too that we could be seeing a lot more of ancient Pompeii soon.

You can watch the researchers explain more about the virtual reconstruction project in the video below:

The research is reported in Scires It.

A Texas judge has quit the Republican Party after officiating his first same-sex marriage, deciding he had had enough of its intolerance.

Jennings said when some mentioned that many Republican judges might not be willing to preside over a same-sex marriage, “that’s when I started thinking, Well maybe I’m not in the right party then.”

“Today’s Republican Party has chosen a dark path I cannot take,” Jennings said at a Democratic fundraising dinner over the weekend, where he officially made the announcement that he was switching parties.

Let me introduce you to my husband-wife.

A couple of months ago, I got married. It was, in many ways, traditional — I wore an elaborate white dress; my beloved, a tailored suit. I tossed my bouquet. In other ways, it was not — we walked each other down the aisle, hand in hand. After we exchanged our vows and made out before our community, the officiant (a friend who had become an ordained minister via the Internet) gazed down upon us. “I now pronounce you … married!”

We were never going to be pronounced ”man and wife,” my partner and I — firstly, because it’s gross and archaic, and secondly, because my brand-new spouse is not a man.

She looks like a man, though. Much more than she resembles a woman. She’s lanky and lean. Wears button-down shirts and dress pants she buys online from Topman , a U.K.-based retailer that sells menswear in XS. Her hair looks like a Pomade advertisement from the 1950s, so short the nape of her neck feels like velvet after a salon visit, the sharpest, straightest side part painstakingly combed into the shine of it.

http://67.media.tumblr.com/b91d467aa...gxyo1_1280.jpg

And speaking of advertisements, my former fiancée did a wee bit of modeling, for a website that focuses on the style and fashion of women like herself — masculine, to put it simply, or what was once called butch, a word that can feel a little 1990s, if not 1960s. To get radical academia about it, she’s genderqueer, or gender-variant, or gender-nonconforming, all of which fall into the roomy transgender basket. The photos were so hot that they wound up in the wedding section of the New York Times.

My partner is not a man — she doesn’t wonder whether she should begin a course of testosterone, as many of our friends have done. That’s not her path. She does go by a male name, preferring it to the female one she grew up with. She doesn’t ask people to call her ”he” — though if you do so by mistake, she doesn’t mind. In most all ways cultural and social, my partner is a boy. It’s just that she’s a girl.

So, I had tickets to the Poi Dog Pondering concert tonight at the historic Vic theater in Chicago. These tickets were purchased last month, BEFORE the Cubs started kicking ass in the playoffs. They are playing the Dodgers tonight at Wrigley Field. Decided to blow off the concert and try to get tickets to the game instead. Only tickets I could find were online auctions, so I bid and bid. I was outbid on 3 occasions, on the fourth attempt, BINGO!

So, I am spending what amounts to as a third world country's GDP, so what? How many times will I see the Cubs in this position, so close to the World Series? Tired of being baseballs laughing stock.

Indian police sting breaks up fraud ring that targeted Americans and Canadians through IRS and CRA scam

PATRICK WHITE
The Globe and Mail
Published Friday, Oct. 21, 2016 1:38PM EDT

On Oct. 5, Indian authorities rounded up 70 people in Thane, India, suspected of running an expansive call-centre racket that perpetrated a notorious scam involving fake Internal Revenue Agency calls to U.S. citizens.

The arrests have now proven to have a Canadian twist.

Since the bust, a Canadian version of the scam – this one using fake calls from the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) – has unexpectedly disappeared, the RCMP announced on Friday.

“After the police operation in Thane, the RCMP observed that the number of reports related to the CRA scam had significantly decreased to a small fraction of what was reported for the weeks and months leading up to these arrests,” the Mounties stated in a press release.

The imposters tell their victims they owe a large debt to the federal tax-collection agency and demand immediate payment by credit card, wire transfer or iTunes gift cards.

The callers threaten the victims, saying that any failure to pay the back taxes will result in jail time.

The Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre has received reports from victims of losses totalling $5.7-million. The organization has estimated that this represents just 5 per cent of the total losses in this country.

In all, nearly 40,000 people reported getting the calls.

Other versions of the scam involve imposters claiming to represent Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada as well as various police agencies.

According to police in Mumbai, at least 700 people worked in the call centres, which netted more than $150,000 (U.S.) a day.

Officers seized computers, servers and other equipment in raids. Police charged the alleged ringleaders with extortion, impersonation and violations of the country’s information-technology laws.

An FBI cybercrime expert is working on the ground in Thane to share evidence, according to the Indian broadcaster NDTV.

Indian police are scouring the country for 23-year-old Sagar Thakkar, also known as “Shaggy,” the alleged mastermind of the multimillion-dollar racket.

I hate that some of us feel we have to find bras to stop our nipples from showing. That ad, well, I remember those times...it brings to mind "Three's Company" and you could always see their nips through their t-shirts. I know that show was so very sexist and objectifying, but it does prove how society changes with its dictates on what is publicly 'presentable' for women's bodies. Why do I have to worry about taking measures to prevent people from seeing my nipples show through my clothing? I resent that!

Here's the Beauty Pageant Contestant Who's "Too Fat" to Win

http://cdn.mbl.is/frimg/9/17/917560.jpg

Today in idiotic nonsense, some dummies are telling a beauty pageant contestant that she’s too fat. Here we go again!

The Iceland Monitor reports that Arna Ýr Jónsdóttir, Miss Iceland 2015, was told by the owner of the Miss Grand International beauty contest that she needs to lose weight by Tuesday’s finale.

Arna Ýr says she was told to, “Stop eating breakfast, eat just salad for lunch and drink water every evening until the contest,” by spokespeople for the founder and owner of the Miss Grand International beauty contest, Thai TV presenter Nawat Itsaragrisil.

The pageant, which I’ve never heard of but is apparently legit and happens in Las Vegas in a few days, told her that Itsaragrisil wanted to give her the "advice" to lose the non-existent chub because he likes her and wants her to do well. So sweet!

And she told them to go fuck themselves.

“I intend to stand up for myself, women everywhere and the Icelandic people. I will not let them tell me I am too fat to look good on stage. I have quit. I will not be taking part in Miss Grand International.”

Dog Waits On Curb For Over A Month After His Family Moves Away

When a family moved out of their Detroit home, they left a lot of junk on the curb: a mattress, a couple of dressers. Pillows.

And a dog named Boo.

Of course, Boo didn't know they weren't coming back. There was the old bed he knew so well, with the old familiar scents. Why not crawl onto it and wait?

http://conservativespirit.com/wp-con...7088440770.jpg

A month passed while Boo maintained his solitary vigil. A neighbor left food and water for this curbside refugee. But he refused to budge.

Finally, Mike Diesel, founder of Detroit Youth and Dog Rescue, got the call — and raced to the scene.

"He was just laying there, being his loyal self," Diesel tells The Dodo. "Pillows were still on the mattress. Being the loyal dog he was supposed to be, he waited for his master to come back."

And then Diesel set out to mend the dog's broken heart.

Man Dressed As Tree Arrested

It is an indisputable fact that trees don't belong in the street. Luckily, we have law enforcement to deal with such situations. Yesterday in Portland, Maine, police successfully arrested a stubborn human tree, who was blocking traffic at a busy intersection.

The piney perp "went to Congress Square wearing what appeared to be branches from an evergreen tree," the Portland Press-Herald reports. Police approached him, lifted the needly branches from his face, and told him to stay out of traffic. When he walked into the road, they arrested him for obstructing a public way. Video shows the tree slowly shuffling down the crosswalk, flanked by officers.

The offending tree man, Asher A. Woodworth, is a local artist. His previous work includes various professional dance performances, as well as stealing the pepper from a local Chili's sign. He describes himself as an "impulsive" person who "believes in physical labor and the unity of opposites." Photo and video evidence suggest he made a really convincing tree.

Bachelor Party groomsmen cooking bacon in cabin... dog shows up at the door

'We were cooking bacon with the door open. The next thing you know, there’s this dog sitting right at the front door.

'She wouldn’t come inside but she sat right there.

'After we gave her a bunch of food and water she started producing milk again. So we figured if she’s making milk, her pups can’t be that old,' he said.

The group of eight men followed her into the woodland to a patch in the ground she was closely guarding, he said.
There, they found her seven puppies in a hole.

The group washed the dogs of fleas and dirt and took them back to the cabin to look after them.

Their beer fund was put towards dog food by the end of the trip, Craddock added.

Now all of the dogs live with the men in a five-mile radius.

My Halloween

Luckily, the weather turned out an A-ok for the little ghouls and boys who came out to relieve me of pant-loads of candy. My neighbor and her husband came over for the few hours to dole out the goods. She had a Sarah Palin mask and he had a Salvador Dali. They are both eclectic artsy fartsy types, so I wasn't surprised at the Dali.

Neighbor on the other side who has a stressful life caring for his wife of 50 years with alzheimer decided to also join the festivities. He brought his Burmese Mountain dog to add to the fun! (When the kids asked what kind of dog she was, I said she is a Chihuahua dressed up as a Burmese Mountain dog for Halloween. Heehee)

So many kids had good to great costumes and were courteous and friendly (with the exception of the few whom I made cry due to the horrifying nature of my costume.) My favorite trick or treat costumes were the two girls who had characters from "The Purge" movie. Creepy cool!

There is no better way to get closer to your neighbors than celebrating a holiday or festival in such a public fashion. Now, I know my cool neighbors have a hot tub on their back deck. "HELLO, I'm coming over with champagne and water ready clothing!"

Too many parents brought their infants by, now who gives candy to an infant? They just wanted free candy......pfffft

Hoping everyone here who celebrated Hallow day had a great one!
