MOJO please
hey folks
i interviewed today for a position as in-house photographer for an antiques auction house here. i would very much appreciate it if y'all would send some big ass mojo vibes to the woman i interviewed with...so's she'll hire me. it's decent enough money to start and fully paid health insurance (something i haven't had in years) after 90 days. oh, and i get to see/shoot/touch fabulous antiquities. thanks! |
another competition
ok, folks...the entry fee is just right on this one. yup, it's FREE and, you can submit up to 3 images. oh, did i mention there's still a couple of months before it closes? uh huh...that means you have time to go shoot some stuff.
now, how 'bout it fancy? sassy? dixielady? hmmm? i will if you will. :) |
Wil I must be missing the link for that one... where is it?
Good luck on this one!! |

just finished up day two of production photos for an indy zombie short being shot here in austin. i discovered that i'm on a learning curve with this sort of photography...i have to remember that i'm shooting production photos, not the movie. i have also discovered i need to add a couple of faster lenses to my armory.
tomorrow and tuesday, i'll be doing production photos for a dyke movie being shot here. it's a film adaptation of "Valencia" by michelle tea. each chapter of the book will be shot by a different director and cast. sounds like an interesting project. for now, i'll leave you with my final heroes vs zombies shot for today. |

Btw - thank you for always encouraging me. :) |
Do you have an idea yet of what faster lens you're looking for?

the canon came w/ an 18-55 f3.5-5.6 that's very serviceable. i wouldn't mind having a 50mm 1.4 or 1.8 for low light, indoor shooting. it's fast enough to accomodate the low light and will lessen any hand shake from handheld shots. i'd also like to have one for the nikon as well. i'm not very happy with the autofocus lenses i got with the nikon. the focus is just a little too soft. i'd like to have a 70-200 zoom. that covers a lot of range...couple that with a 1.4x teleconverter and it's close to a 90-280 zoom. i like the teleconverter i have for the nikon and would invest in another for the canon. it's small and gives me an "extra" lens. problem with that is that you lose an f stop or two when you use it. longer lenses with 1.4 or 1.8 f stop are hideously expensive, though. that's as far as i've gotten on considering lenses right now. i'll keep an eye on craigslist and the pawn shops, though...you can sometimes get a great deal. i'm finding the wider angle lenses are working nicely for interior shots with marginal lighting. i'm having to learn to shoot action sequences. fortunately, it seems the director will run the actors through the scene a time or two before they actually shoot. i've been reading a little about sound blimps...they deaden the shutter noise in the camera, which allows for shooting while filming is going on...without the sound being picked up by the sound boom. since those are insanely high, i may look into making a couple for my cameras. i swear my project list is getting unreasonably long. :) the film i'm starting on today seems to be more character/plot driven than action. i'm hoping that will make it easier to shoot. we'll see about that, though. hope this answered at least part of your question...i'm just now on my first cuppa coffee and don't make sense to myself either. |
Perfect sense! Have you found a good local camera supply, or are you surfing the web for gear?
Got my fingers crossed for Tuesday, even though I know you don't need extra luck. You got this in the bag. :) Quote:

honestly, i'm looking on the web for stuff. the stores are just so damn high. i realize they need to make a profit, but damn. i was looking into softboxes for lights. insane prices. so, i made my own. they don't look all fancy, but they do a great job and give a nice light for portraits or for product stuff in a light tent. i was able to make them for much less than what they sell for through camera stores. i haven't made a light tent yet, but i don't think it'd be all that difficult... i'd think that you're in a pretty good area to find gear reasonably priced. there are universities near to you and i'll bet you can find gear that students are looking to part with. i've found some really great deals in pawn shops, too. just take your camera body with you and try the stuff out. if they don't want to let you do that, chances are they're trying to hide something. or maybe i'm overly suspicious. |

Regarding the teleconverter. I have one for my Canon and I don't like it. Can't get a clear shot. I went cheap and bought a kenko one. Not worth it, I wonder if the Canon one would have been a better buy. B&H often sells used pieces, may be worth a shot. I got my 40D from them for 500.00 and it works great. |
a different density

obviously, my density (yes, gratuitous back to the future reference) lies elsewhere. thanks, everyone, for the well wishes. off to bake pies and edit photos from recent shoots. |

as a side note...i found it interesting that when i called this morning, the woman i interviewed with felt compelled to explain to me why i wasn't hired. then told me that you never know how things will work out and for me to keep an eye out for another ad from them. go figure. |

I actually decided to try to enter this one, but I was too late. THe one that did win was very nice! They have contests every Friday I think. It appears that you win based on the amount of votes you get, she got 6 votes = 30.00. Not bad for a little fun. Thanks Wil, good luck on your next adventure! |
Here are a few favorites I shot on a recent outing...

Those are really cute Merlin! What did you shoot 'em with, or did I miss that in a previous post?
I'm very curious to chat with you all about post processing photos. I'm a whore for photoshop, love to play with overlays, textures and actions. Piscean is much more organic in her photography usually likes it SOOC... but I'm a sucker for taking my shots and creating more with them, most of the times. What are your thoughts? Here are a few of my newest shots. . . (Fancy I copied your format for posting - hope you don't mind!) Gathering Eggs (This was taken at Polyface Farms (mentioned in Food Inc.) in rural Virginia last month) All for Believing The Sacred is in the Ordinary and this one was a tribute to our late kitty, Petunia. Shooting a family tomorrow morning (in like 5 hours, ack!) But really looking forward to doing some personal soul searching this summer through the view finder. What have you all been shooting? Share! fondly, Amanda |
Hi Amanda!
I have always been a fan of your work. I love the photos, especially Tuna Pie :) I don't have PS, but I am tempted. I guess for ME, When I shot on film, it was such an adrenaline rush. Getting JUST the right shot, then waiting to see if it was any good. I remember each time I clicked thinking .27 cents, .27 cents, that is what I calculated the cost of each shot. Now I kinda shoot, shoot, ahhhh I can delete it later, I can darken/lighten it later, I don't take nearly the time I used to in any of it. I use Picasa for processing only. I have Aperture but I hate it. I am interested in working in layers and would love to learn how to do that. I guess I have to buy PS to even think about it, I love that I don't have PS, I am afraid I will become even more lazy. :seeingstars: |
I use the Picassa also. I think I may break down and buy PS today. I haz a coupon for 30% off PS Elements. I think that will be a good starting point into it. (I have PS Lightroom but haven't delved too deeply into it, just some basic contrasting.)

What is the diff between PS and Elements? |
I used a sony cybershot, great for up close nature pictures. Rubbish for landscapes.

I was laid next to them for two hrs and had my camera on burst.

You folks have some awesome stuff. Thanks for the inspiration to keep shooting. I just did my virgin download; 900 images from my cell phone to the MAC....whooosh Still struggling with the MacBook photo program, and anything Adobe just keeps locking up. Some interesting news about a new kind of camera: http://www.nytimes.com/2011/06/22/te...2&pagewanted=1
Basically, it allows you to change the focus of a shot after you've taken it. Very cool! |
aha! here is where i was looking for. [subscribing]
really beautiful stuff ya'll are sharing! inviting anyone interested to click my signature below which is where i'm shoeboxing my photos, or the ones i'm not embarrassed to show that is. i shoot primarily w/ my minolta srt202 [mhmm ... film] and when i can afford it, my holga 120 or kodak brownie. 120 film is expensive! but y'know, i've never been an advocate of 'what camera do you shoot with?' i'm much more interested in what you shot. i don't really care to see your camera but i would love to see your photos! |
VINTAGE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
SO happy to see you here! I miss you and your work!!!! |

p.s. i love that photo of you in your signature w/ the fish! |
I enjoy taking some scenery shots. . I will be making a cross country road trip real soon on my move to FL from CO and I would like to get a good digital camera to use on my way. This is something I will use again as I do like to take photos with my cell phone. I know a camera would take a greater picture and it is something to invest in. So what do you all recommend for a starter? Great thread and ideas here and for sure great photos!
Thanks! |

anything that will be a good long term investment that I can possibly hook up to a printer to print photos and onto my computer to upload images..
maybe something also with a timer and a tri pod. . First something just to catch some great scenery photos with what I mentioned up above and then second to consider the timer and tri pod. . I want options but not have to spend too much to get started. Thanks! |
