]Carol.
Ok... Firstly I want to say that if you haven't read the book yet, then go see the film first. Because to fit all that the book entails into a few hours is a challenge. I will also say you must go and see it, purely to make up your own mind. This film is still with me now, and I am marinading it over. I think possibly its because I had read the book first, and was so consumed by its plot and more so the two women, their emotions & undeniable connection, that this film just fell a tad short for me. (I may say this in haste though after a breather away from it) But again this is only a personal view. I don't dislike this film by any means and I know of other people who simply adore this film. For some reason I didn't really feel consumed by it. But don't let my review stop you going to see it. I will say that the sets are beautiful, and the acting is exceptional. And unlike the book the very long intro between the two women isn't as long in coming. Perhaps after waiting a whole year for this movie, reading and watching teasers I had this so built up in my head that nothing could compete. Please go and make the effort to see it, then at least you can judge for yourself. I will take a break from Carol, then come back to it when its out on dvd and hopefully my view will have changed. I hope you all love it. yes its me again. so i went to see Carol for a second time this week. i have had a slight change of heart, in that i think its growing on me. if you are able to block out how much more detail the book goes into then its a good film. the problem is with trying to get it to film from the book story is that Therese's thoughts are all in the book, and this is much harder to convey on screen. so you have to just take this film as a different entity entirely. so give it a go. |
Terrific but very sad movie about the loss of an immense talent, Amy:
A second, very funny movie: American Mistress. Both On Demand. |
Southpaw
Return to Sender Inside Out I give them all 4 out of 5 stars |
I saw Bad Santa last night. I'm not a fan.

Far From Heaven. The script is rather over the top in 1950isms, but the movie addresses some important social issues - "homosexuality", racism, segregation, patriarchy, domestic abuse, conformity, etc. It's rather well acted for the most part, but I didn't think Dennis Quaid was very believable, or perhaps that's what most wealthy men in Connecticut in the 50's were like (reserved, and somewhat mechanical). Some scenes really brought out a lot of emotions. I think it's definitely worth seeing. Actors: Julianne Moore, Dennis Quaid, Dennis Haysbert, Patricia Clarkson, Viola Davis, etc.

Hitchcock's Vertigo- Restored version...Again!
|
Simply...BRILLIANT!
My partner and I both agree this is must see this festive season. It was also great to see so many people watching this movie cuddling with their LGBTQ significant other. :love1: Happy holidays! :smileyXmasTree: |
I've watched a few movies in the past week or so.
This one was really good. This was tolerable because of the season. This was well done. This was fantastic. This was interesting. This was freakin' adorable. |
Not the last movie I saw, but the kids and I are gearing up for a 6 movie Star Wars marathon before making our way to the theater for the new movie...
Anyone else doing this insane binge watch? :| |
Once Upon a Time in Queens Stars: Paul Sorvino, Michael Rapaport Chazz Palminteri
Recently released from prison, an ex-mafia boss tries not to fall into his old habits, but surviving outside of the mafia is harder than it seems. First be forewarned this movie moves S L O W but with that being said, I rather enjoyed it! It's more about relationships, past mistakes, and someone dealing with who they USED to be, than about mafia life:movieguy: |
sisters
This film was out last week in the uk.
It stars tina fay and her buddy amy Poehler. Yes its mad cap, and silly, but its just great entertainment. You'll laugh at a lot of it, just because its that's stupid. If your wanting just a good old giggle, and a film that doesn't demand too much of you then go see it, you'll have fun. |
I caught The Sorcerer's Apprentice today. I've seen it before and I like this movie, so I enjoyed seeing it again.
For those that haven't seen it, here you go: |
90 Minutes in Heaven
5 out of 5 stars If you aren't religious of any type don't watch but this movie teared me up, it's based on a true story. |
Spotlight
Spotlight (warning: triggers)
I really enjoyed it. It was well written and the story was easy to follow. Investigative journalism is the real star of this movie. All the actors were good, but I especially liked Stanley Tucci. He had a small but important role. I expect this move to garner some Oscar nominations and I look forward to seeing it again when it comes out on dvd. |
I watched a cotton candy (aka brain fluff) movie tonight.
It's not old but it has a 'pre good CG' feel to it. |
White Christmas
I think I have a new disciple to Edith Head's costume and design magnificence. My daughter now also loves her work, and we both swooned over the dresses. Of particular adoration: Rosemary's black velvet cocktail dress, the black gown with the cutout neckline, and of course the final scene red satin gowns with white fur trim. :) Interestingly, we also had a poignant side conversation about anorexia thanks to Vera-Ellen. |
I finally saw "The Martian" starring Matt Damon. I really enjoyed it.
|
3 A.M. (2001)
I streamed 3 A.M. and liked it.
Starring Danny Glover, Pam Greer, Michele Rodriquez, Sarita Choudhury. Got to see life from the POV of some cab drivers. Music was good with some interesting story lines. Nothing to write home about, but it wasn't a waste of time. Also saw Die Hard and that was good. Think I'm gonna see The Big Short tomorrow or Thursday... |
I have to check that 3:00 a.m out. I like a lot of the actors in it.
|
Saw Sisters with two of my besties.... kept thinking we shoulda smuggled in margaritas. It had funny moments, but would have been better if we'd been home watching it with a bunch of muchies and drinks. We were the loudest laughers in the theater...LOL
|
I saw two movies tonight and both were visually spectacular.
I saw this movie and liked it. It's an interesting twist on an old story. And I saw this one in the theatre with a ton of people, including at least one baby under the age of 1, who should not have been there but I guess they didn't have a babysitter. There were a ton of excellent things to extol about this movie, including just how funny it was, but there are a couple of things that bugged me. I won't go all spoiler alert central station but I will say that Mark Hamill clearly has a kickass agent for second billing and having an assistant. |
star wars - the force awakens
Saw this yesterday.
I liked it a lot, though I thought it was hyped up to much. Its trying to appeal to the first fans as well as a new generation. Its basically the same story as we have seen before, but with a new ppl as well as some of the original cast. There are a few twists that are different. The air battles are great. Worth going to see,but I was left feeling a bit deflated. Judge for yourselves. |
The Big Short.
It was good, but I really didn't care for it. The focus of the film is on the crooks, not the investigation. All The Presidents Men, Zodiac, and Spotlight are films that focus on finding the truth, opposed to making the crooks (or bad guys) look good. A bunch of realtors were watching the movie, too, and those loud asses were cheering on the crooks. As we all know, the little guy or the everyday guy was the big loser in the housing bust of 2008, not the crooks (banks and Wall Street). One good thing ... A lot of people blamed immigrants and poor people for the housing bust (snort), when the real problem was the bankking deregulation in the 1980s that allowed lenders to offer sub-prime mortgages that were then re-packaged into bundles and sold to investors. They did show that. Still, I left with the feeling that the crooks were glorified. Maybe it's because of the crowd I watched it with. So all that put together left me not really enjoying the good performances. I'll watch it again when it comes out on DVD to see if I feel the same. I'll be interested to hear what others think about this. |
i saw victor frainkenstine it was a awesome movie lol
|
Interstellar!!
Phenomenal! |
Phoenix : 2014 Ronald Zehrfeld Nina Hoss)
A disfigured concentration-camp survivor , unrecognizable after facial reconstruction surgery, searches ravaged postwar Berlin for the husband who might have betrayed her to the Nazis. This does move a bit slow, and it's subtitled for you's who don't care for them BUT what a movie! I can't recommend it enough:popcorn: |
I saw this today. I thought it was apropos.
It was a little different but good. I like Joy's sass. |
I caught The Force Awakens, today. I enjoyed it. It was the perfect way for me, to celebrate Christmas.
|
A good friend of mine, who lives in Kauai, saw a closed private screening of The Revenant (Leonardo DiCaprio, 2015) yesterday. Robert said that the 2.5 hour suspense thriller movie will probably earn DiCaprio another award for best actor.
It opens nation wide on January 8th, so I'm definitely going to see this movie, after the new year gets underway. |
I watched Howards End this morning....
I could've sworn that I had seen it before...but it wasn't the movie I thought it was at all. I have to Google the movie where Anthony Hopkins and Emma Thompson play butler and housekeeper in a very large house. That's the movie I thought I was seeing. Either way, I was in the mood for a historical drama and it suited me...right up until the end. It seemed rather abrupt. |
Wish You Well (2013) Ellen Burstyn Josh Lucas
A young girl and her brother come of age at their great grandmother's house in Virginia during the 1940s. It moved a bit slow but over all I enjoyed it! Check it out and see what you think! |
It is the end of the semester. Why didn't I assign a choice of 1 or 2 films for students to choose to do for their final paper. I am loco
Yesterday I watched 1)Still Alice 2) The Other Sister Today I watched 1) A Beautiful Mind 2) the Soloist 3) Temple Grandin 4) Mary and Max (which was dark, good but a little strange) I am done with watching at home for a bit :) |
Joy
I really liked this movie, but I'm a sap for David O. Russell movies. I "get" his dysfunctional people. I know them. I have relatives, friends, coworkers, and hairdressers like them. Hell, I am one of them; working class blokes trying to live the American dream. Joy is based on a true story about single mom who's good at inventing things. There are improbable moments, but I was able to accept them. I thought everyone was good, especially De Niro, Lawrence, and Rossellini. This is another one I'll watch when it comes out on DVD. And the music was good too, not as good as the soundtrack on American Hustle (another one of Russell's films), but it was good. |
Carol
So many thoughts going through my mind about this movie, but nothing so well formulated to write. I'm headed off to download the book. |
Pawn Sacrifice 2014 Stars: Tobey Maguire, Liev Schreiber, Peter Sarsgaard
Set during the Cold War, American chess prodigy Bobby Fischer finds himself caught between two superpowers and his own struggles as he challenges the Soviet Empire. Good cast, good acting, it was OK, nothing special tho IMHO  |
I streamed Heartburn, 1986.
Starring Meryl Streep, Jack Nicholson, Stockard Channing, Jeff Daniels. It's about the love affair and marriage of Nora Ephon and Carl Bernstein. I enjoyed it, as I did the first time I saw it. Thought there were sweet, funny, and sad moments. This movie got a some bad press when it came out. I found Ebert's review online and he came down hard on Ephron. Called her mean and said she wrote a bitter movie. He even said she should have written about someone else's marriage. Har! Bitter? (a word never used to describe a man, mind you) The only thing bitter was Ebert's review. Ephron just didn't sugar coat the bad parts of their relationship. Glad I watched it again. Also, it has "Coming Around Again" and "Itsy Bitsy Spider" sung by Carly Simon: |
This movie has me so messed up lol Interesting little Sci-Fi film |
I watched No Country for Old Men last night....
I was at Walmart and it was in the bin of $4 movies. Apparently it won an Oscar? I don't know what year.. it was wicked good. Its one you have to watch over again. Tommy Lee Jones and Josh Brolin star and I enjoy them both. The plot is kinda all over the place. But truly it was a great flick. The Coen brothers directed it and I've like their stuff previously. They tend to make loopy kind of movies...in a good way lol |
