love isnt a rose garden. it isnt a ring. it isnt a fiftieth first date or an album full of photos or a box of cards and letters and trinkets you kept because you needed something to take up physical space as a symbol of something you cant put into words.

love is crazy making. love is annoying habits and taking the last of the milk for the coffee and phone conversations that go on too long when you really just want to sleep a few hours. love is discussions about things that make no sense to one of you and move the other to tears. it's decisions about things that will change your way of moving through the world forever. love is wrenching when you want to be left still; it's noise in a quiet world. love is putting away several things you truly like for the one thing you truly want while maintaining that you'd be just fine if that desire went unfulfilled and secretly admitting that life would suck if you missed out on your moment. love is wrenching when you need stability and slow when you are hungry for fast and filled with more light than your Raybans can filter and habitual to the point of boring when you need a little insanity and brilliantsexy when you just reached out for a hug.

love isnt a glittering red heart or anniversary dates that come with sparkling champagne and gifts in colored paper. love is an ugly grey cementrocksolid anchor that doesnt let you down and never lets you go and wont let you f*ck yourself over.

love is repetition. it's years of talking and arguing and talking and apologizing and talking and laughing at yourselves and talking and exploring new options when the old options dont work anymore and talking and getting help with the obstacles that are frightening because facing them isnt scarier than letting it all go out of ego or pride.

love is dirty. it's mud encrusted devotion. it's loyalty that comes with welts and bruises and scrapes. love does permanent damage, leaves scars, carves its name into you for everyone to see and wont fade away when you do. love is dirty. it's dirty. if it werent, it wouldnt be love. it would be a valentine.
