I love Hys hands (Hys forearms and hands to be exact). Whether Hy's sawing, chopping, sewing or cooking (or - and I love You by the way for this one - painting my toenails in an effort to get me to relax), just the sight of Hys hands/forearms in motion has me transfixed. I think it's because of all Hys body parts, it's Hys hands and forearms that, to me, best represent what Hy is as a whole - a wonderful combination of masculine and feminine that doesn't need naming or analyzing but simply is.

I was thinking about why hands are so iconic or resonant an image, and it made me remember this poem by Carolyn Forche from the early eighties. I hope it's okay to post it here.

Why I love Butch hands
 

Okay so here's what I've been trying to say.

Hands speak for us. They announce our intentions. Try to lie—your hands will give you away; they'll flutter nervously or do the palms-up, "don't-kill-me" thing.

And when you love someone, and you're afraid for them to know, your hands will pave the way. They'll reach out, pat that person's arm, pick some lint off her shirt.

Tenderness is in the hands, and that's hot. For me, anyway.

so is strength, despair, supplication, power, authority, fear... a lifetime of carrying and reaching toward or protecting is all reflected in the hands. They are how we extend ourselves and how we receive others....
