In what context my friend?

I speak Spanish and dabble in other languages as well as English, so I am pretty sure you don't mean languages other than English in general?

Do you mean maybe when people speak in another language on purpose so you won't understand them?

I believe it is funny when people try to do that to me, and I know what they are saying and respond accordingly! Grin!

i believe..

i understand spanish, better than trying to speak it.
*dating venezuela* learning experience back in the day lol

anyway, i believe that people in general need to be REAL and own up to things in the real world.

that this planet is growing

that i look better without a beard, but like what i got anyway

and life is FINALLY looking up

Jet, it would probably be helpful to explain the context of your statement. Otherwise, it could be perceived as being racist. At the very least, it could be hurtful to those who speak languages other than English.

Both Gemme and apocalipstic make very good points with their replies.

Care to elaborate so others might better understand?

i believe that when i hear people say things like, "speaking a foreign language in public is rude", i automatically assume (yes, i assume, and yes i know what that spells out) that racism plays a part in why they feel that way.

Here's the odd kinda message the Universe is sending me and making me feel like i need to say this publicly: Though i've heard that belief more & more frequently around here (SC) over the past few years, i heard it directly from my house mate last week. It took me aback, i have to admit.

i asked her why she felt that way, and she said because they might be talking about her, or plotting some kind of terrorist thing.

Both of the reasons make me laugh in disbelief. i am sure the look on my face as she was saying all this was not a pretty look. my mind was racing between, "no effin way you can really think that!" to, "girl, you are not the center of the universe", to, "omFg how...how....just plain ignorant".

i told her that though i found her to be worthy of gossip and talking about her behind her back, i doubted very seriously many other people did, *especially* strangers in public. And that though she may think it's all about her, not many others agreed, especially people who don't know her. And that i was pretty confident 2 people having a conversation that was going on before she was sharing the same public space with them (she says it happened in the grocery store that particular day), were not discussing her....they were maybe trying to decide what was for dinner, or if generic was indeed as good as name brand or maybe gossiping about a co-worker or neighbor, but i was pretty dang certain she was not the topic of their conversation.

So then, she of course said what i knew was coming next: "well, it's just rude! They are in America, they should speak english!" (i praised her for at least not saying "they should speak American", because i've heard that more than once, seriously).

OK....why? Why should everyone in one particular country only ever speak one particular language?? So we all know it's not about us?? So we can all rest easy knowing no one is plotting how to blow us up?? Give me a break.

i believe that knowing how to communicate is a good thing and might help in certain situations like if one is lost or injured and needs help, but i do not believe anyone should be forced to learn and speak any language (if their job requires it, my thought is surely they knew that before agreeing to accept the job, so they are deciding to do it).

And so what if they are talking about you?! So what??? Does it really matter what language people use when they talk about you?? Heck, i personally would rather they did use a language i don't understand while discussing how i look or what i'm wearing or why they think i'm wearing different socks. Saves me the trouble of deciding whether it's worth confronting them or just letting it slide with a smile. Because really, at the end of my day, what other people think/say about me is none of my business.

i don't believe i'm making a whole lotta sense right now, or getting my points out clearly. Maybe i need to learn how to communicate better....regardless....i just had to speak my mind. And i considered putting this elsewhere, but because of an earlier post, i decided this was where it belonged.

Now, feel free to tell me what you think, but please try to do it without being mean to me, k?

I believe you know My thoughts on the matter already babygirl, but I'll say it in here too, I totally agree with you! I mean, english speaking people speaking the native language? For starters english is a bastardised conglomeration of all the multiple nations who've either invaded or been invaded by english speaking people ...

I believe being "REAL" and being able to grasp common sense and decency are two entirely different things. I believe it is obnoxious and agitating when someone hides behind the term "I am just real" to disguise their lack of common sense and pure ignorance. Funny thing is the only person you are lying to is yourself but that really isn't working either.:rubberducky:

I believe stating *any* language as a 'bastardized' version of any other language to be rude and repulsive.

bas·tard·ize (bstr-dz)
tr.v. bas·tard·ized, bas·tard·iz·ing, bas·tard·iz·es
1. To lower in quality or character; debase.
2. To declare or prove (someone) to be a bastard.
bastard·i·zation (-tr-d-zshn) n.

------------------------------------------------

Nations and cultures have invaded other nations and cultures for eons, and it's not just the english language that is a "conglomerate" of other languages.

Here's why I'm a little 'picky' on the word 'bastardization' when used to describe languages. I had someone of British/Anglo Saxon heritage tell me once that Portuguese was 'just a bastardized version of Spanish'. What ticked me off even more from that experience? She was a graduate student in linguistics. I felt because of her educational prowess I didn't have much to debate her on the issue.

Instead I walked away in disgust, felt like my culture was shat on by someone who wasn't even in a position to 'joke', 'comment', 'tease' in the same manner if say... an Spanish speaking person had said that to me (as least there would be a shared experience and history of the multitude of cultures/race that have attacked/settled in the Iberian Peninsula for well over a thousand years.)

I believe I'm not 'attacking' you personally Massive, and I hope this doesn't sound overly harsh. I'm presenting some historical context as to why.

I believe we should all take care about using a word like 'bastardization' when describing *any* language that is so heavily related to ones culture or race.

Thanks for understanding.

I believe that revenge isn’t right
I believe that first impressions last
And there is nothing better then a good laugh

I believe that dreams do come true
I believe there's destiny for me and you,
I believe something good comes from something bad
I believe everyone has one true love

I believe there's destiny for me and you
I believe that good things come to those who wait
I believe love never arrives too late

I believe something good comes from something bad
I believe that for tears of happiness there are tears of sad
I believe everyone has a guardian angel
And the good you do will be rewarded well

I believe money can't buy people's affection
I believe you don't know what you've got until it's gone
I believe a new day arrives with every dawn

I believe a smile can be contagious

I believe we should all live in harmony
I believe in making the most of a beautiful day
And it's not the end until everything's okay

I believe absence makes the heart grow fonder
I believe you will lose if you sit and wonder
I believe every experience teaches you a lesson
And nothing cures better then a drinking session

I believe everyone has one true love
I believe sometimes we need a little shove
I believe the whole world is a stage
I believe we only get better with age

I believe that to learn you have to live
I believe that to love someone you have to give
I believe one moment can change your life
And there's still help when you’re in strife

I believe everyone has one true friend
I believe love helps a broken heart mend
I believe in the power of a song
And things will change before too long

I believe living is the best experience
I believe in not laughing at other people’s expense
I believe it’s hard to watch a lover leave
And when they’re gone all you can do is breath

I believe to always look on the bright side
I believe that life is just one big ride
I believe when I die people will grieve
But it’s ok because I believe - Egyptian heart
