I TONYA

Went to see this film last night.
I had have never really had any interest in figure skating, hence I didn't know about this or any of the other bits of the story.
The film was really good, and the acting was superb.
The dark humour in this film is what breaks it up to stop it being too heavy, and you get a sense that this must be what Tonya's humour must be like.
The final penalty I thought was very harsh for Tonya.
I liked this film a lot, and it looked like most of the cinema audience did too.

i just watched *The Shape of Water*

i am not sure why, but i liked it.

It’s kind of a cross between

Splash
The creature from the black lagoon
Beauty and the Beast

thanks Jools, i watched it.

it was bizarre. Some of the scenes, especially the childhood scenes were hard to stomach, but yes I think this is Tonya’s style.

I’m not sure I’m believing all of it but I believe its her truth, for whatever reason.

I’m glad I watched it, thanks!

I saw The Phantom Thread last week, a very, errr, *interesting* film experience. Definitely the most “I didn’t see THAT coming” moment I’ve had in a film in awhile. I would advise waiting to see this until it’s streaming and free.

girl_dee 02-28-2018 03:17 PM

i loved this one!

We are going to see one of the special screenings of The Dark Crystal tonight :)

cinnamongrrl 03-01-2018 05:04 AM

We went to see 12 Strong before it leaves the theater. It was very good, but then I've always enjoyed war movies.

girl_dee 03-01-2018 05:18 AM

i watched “The Post”

Directed by Steven Spielberg

Starring Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep.

It was very good! i may have to watch it again.

Biography · A cover-up that spanned four U.S. Presidents pushed the country's first female newspaper publisher and a hard-driving editor to join an unprecedented battle between the press and the government.

Gemme 03-01-2018 01:15 PM

I saw Wonder earlier today and it was fantastic! I bawled like a baby.

It was very, very good.

akiza 03-01-2018 01:29 PM

Rec 4:Apocalypse ^^ it's a good horror movie

girl_dee 03-01-2018 07:21 PM

I’m watching The Hostiles- Its pretty good!

https://resizing.flixster.com/PZmjru...A7NDg1ODs3MTk3

In 1892, legendary Army Capt. Joseph Blocker reluctantly agrees to escort a dying Cheyenne war chief and his family back to their tribal land. Embarking on a harrowing and perilous journey from Fort Berringer, N.M., to the grasslands of Montana, they soon encounter a young widow whose family was killed on the plains. The travelers must now band together to survive a punishing landscape that's crawling with hostile Comanches and vicious outliers.

girl_dee 03-03-2018 07:42 PM

i watched The Buguiled with Nicole Kidman and Kiersten Dunst.

http://t3.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:A...APIJovzKeWyBOd
it was just okay. i knew it was a remake so i decided to watch the 1971 version with Clint Eastwood.

OMG it was so much better than the remake. In the remake they cut out so much, it lost guts!

A Man Called Ove.......subtitled

While it was nowhere near as detailed as the book, it was still good and we enjoyed it very much.

homoe 03-09-2018 08:07 AM

Lady Bird........

Finally got around to watching this last night and while it was enjoyable, Oscar worthy I'm not so sure about!

jools66 03-11-2018 02:23 AM

Red Sparrow & Ferdinand

Critics have not been kind to Red Sparrow, but I liked it a lot. It's not trying to be a Bond movie. And that is refreshing in some ways.
Jen plays the role very well, though I am not convinced about her dancing scene.
The film actually went rather fast time wise, which is always a good sign.
Give it a try, even if it's just when it comes out on dvd etc.

Ferdinand - loved this movie, more so than Coco, but that film was entirely different.
Ferdinand does have deep seeded meaning to it about animal welfare. And the conflict between that and tradition.
I have always thought bull fighting was a barbaric event, as I have fox hunting etc.
This film is funny, and it's cute, but it is also constructive in it theme.
Kids and adults will like it.

The Darkest Hour

I think that Garry Oldman deserved the Oscar for his performance as Winston Churchill.

Very good movie.

*Anya* 03-15-2018 08:53 PM

Call me by your name

Absolutely beautiful movie. It makes me want to pack up and move to northern Italy.

I don't know how to describe it other than it made me feel to a degree during a movie that I can't remember experiencing before.

Signmypapyrus 03-15-2018 09:10 PM

Watched The Invitation. It was ok, although as a film about cults I think The Master is a better crafted film. Definitely not a horror film. Psychological thriller sure. Interesting take on trauma.
Wouldn’t watch again.

Also saw The Force Awakens for the second time. I actually didn’t like it (I don’t like hand holding and the overwrought explanation of the Force was unnecessary and boring) except for the really wonderfully random references to Spaceballs! I thought I imagined those.
I think I’m gonna go as Dark Helmet for Halloween

girl_dee 03-19-2018 06:02 AM

A Wrinkle in time

Loved the message
Loved the graphics
Loved Oprah

It wasn’t terrible but it wasn’t great. My movie date was pretty awesome though.

Bèsame* 03-22-2018 08:54 PM

Red Sparrow...very graphic, sexy, and I liked it!

Furlough .. Melissa Leo Whoopi Goldberg

When an inmate is granted one weekend out of prison to see her dying mother, a rookie correction officer struggles to keep her under control.

We liked it but this movie switched from a very funny comedy to a drama near the end.

Love After Love

staring: Andie MacDowell, Chris O'Dowd

Following the death of their father, two sons deal with the trials of their own lives while watching their mother explore new beginnings of her own.

IMHO it was an odd little movie and certainly NOT an uplifting one. :movieguy:

READY PLAYER ONE

hi film buffs,
So went to see this film yesterday in imax.
I liked it.
For Stephen I think it was a nod to nostalgia and quite a lot of self indulgence.
The film plot is pretty much as he title suggests, based around video gaming.
But there are more things in the film he wants you to think about too.
E.g like spending more time in reality and how technology is ruling us and not the other way round.
The film did convey these thoughts well, but I feel it could have been cut by a few minutes.
It was very spectacular in imax, and the 3D was done very well too.
Check out a trailer, see what you think and if you are a old school video gamer I would say go and see it.

From the Land of the Moon (Mal de pierres)

This films a real gem, and I can't praise it enough. If you like foreign films then your in for a real treat. It's a French subtitled film.
The context is quite heavy, and you will have to be in the mood for this film as it's in no way comedic. Watch the trailer and see what you think.
But this film Is one that you foreign film buffs will want to see for sure.
Mario Cotillard plays this with so much conviction, it's pure pleasure to see an actress do this level of work.
Please, please make the effort to Watch it.
You won't regret it.

Wonder Woman - I not only loved the early parts on the hidden isle of Amazons (who here wouldn't?!) but also the comments made on the world we live in as seen by an innocent (Wonder Woman) when she entered our world. Yes!

I also loved the bit about how "it was determined that for procreation, men are essential, but for pleasure, unecessary" - had me in giggles, did that!

Light entertainment that makes one think - and great to look at too? Gets my vote!

very nice, I'm glad you enjoyed the article! You asked when the film was released, and I read that it was released in the US the last week of March. Just about a week ago or so. Since it's an independent film, I imagine it will be shown in independently owned theaters (?)..... :rrose:

Molly's Game.......

The true story of Molly Bloom, an Olympic-class skier who ran the world's most exclusive high-stakes poker game and became an FBI target.

Finally got around to watching this last night! It was WAY better than I thought it would be :hangloose:

It just goes to show you if the FBI wants ya or wants you to turn on others, they'll stop at nothing to do it!

Avengers: Infinity War.

Loved it. My son warned me to dehydrate myself before we went so I didn't need to use the bathroom during the movie. (It is 2.5 hours long + previews) Good advice. There is so much going on you can't miss any of it. Looking forward to the next one!

If you decide to go, make sure you wait until the end of the credits. The extra scene is worth it!
