Grant Master Flash and the Furious Five - "White Lines"
 |
I'm all nostalgic today from listening to people's eighties and nineties tunes. So here's one of my old loves, Wayne Shorter, who is in his eighties now. He was born in Newark, New Jersey, co-founded Weather Report, and I bet he still performs.

Sometimes Mariah Carey is compared to Flora Purim—they both have that amazing six-octave range. But personally I way prefer Flora. She's married (still?) to Airto (he's on drums in this), who I love, too, and they played with Chick Corea and still do, I think. When I discovered Brazilian jazz it wasn't new, but it was new to me, and it changed my phrasing, I think, language-wise. I mean, I stopped assuming where things would end.

My serious jazz friends think Chuck Mangione is kind of cheesy, and I realize that now that I'm older—but I still like him. And I always loved this track with Esther Satterfield singing.

Just wanted to say special thanks for all the early/mid eighties tunes. They remind me of the best times of my life. I'm not sure if it was because of those days or the lovin' madness for my boi back then...lol

I listen to this Miles Davis cover of "It Never Entered My Mind" over and over. He recorded it in the fifties and lots of other people have covered that song but I love this lush, tender version the best (I also like it better than the version he did with Bill Evans on piano). It's so different from his later stuff, like the Bitches Brew album, where there's a lot going on under the surface and it leads to a kind of perfect storm at the end. This early performance is so much simpler than that. It seems to come from such a yearning place, and it shows such a pure, sad, beautiful lust for melody.
