Lesbian DELETED from High School Yearbook
http://blogout.justout.com/?p=17123
Read this article and be outraged. Not just her PICTURE was deleted, but any MENTION of this student. And AGAIN, from Mississippi. :crap: |
that is just fucked up
|
How does a group of adults get together and erase a childs 12 participation in something required by our society??
This to me seems like child abuse by an institutional entity!!! |
How incredibly heartbreaking for that student.
and how incredibly heartless of those who did this. |
Im pretty much AGOG lately at the hateful shit that ADULTS are doing to Gay CHILDREN. First the thing with Constance McMillan and now this?
This is just HATEFUL. Just flat-out ignorant hatefulness. |
How sad that a group of adults find they must fear a child because of who she is and what kind of clothing she chooses to wear.
I'm thinking many parts of Mississippi need protesters to shout loud and proud.......we're here to stay and never going away. We are everywhere you want to be. You don't have to love it, but you do have to live with it. We've come a long way babies. |
I am incredibly saddened over this..... How can anyone do this to a *CHILD* sick sick sick.
|
|
Sometimes I think that these people are doing this because they are so mad at the Queer/trans community for fighting for all of the rights that we deserve. "Let's just take it out on the children...that will show them!!"
This young person has been an outstanding student, yet she has been deleted from the year book. It really is sad, and you have to wonder where such hatred comes from. What are they teaching their children? It is THEIR children that will get the real wake up call when they go off to college and realize that a mindset like theirs might just be the minority way of thinking at some colleges. He/she might just get a taste of his/her own medicine, ya know?! |
People can be so hateful and mean. It just floors me every time I see something like this!!! |
This is so sad, it makes me sick to my stomach!
Is this the time when I take my signs and go stand in front of the school? |
I think this gave me a huge violent shove in my decision whether to study for LSAT.....
|
She's really cute—great hair. Jus' sayin' because its waaaay too bad that this is happening to someone who is probably nice, loving etc.
She's needs to get out of hick Miss. and come to a place like Atlanta and start breathing. |
I'm sick and furious!

Me too, HowSoonisNow.
I've been contacted various LGBTQ groups all over Mississippi this morning, inviting them all to the Reunion and trying to find out what they need to feel more supported in fighting this bullshit in their school systems. One person I spoke with said that calling the school district and sending letters is a great idea and also said that donating to orangizations like UnityMississippi( http://unityms.org/ ) helps them with their anti-oppression work. I'm just sickened by the hate and homophobia from these school districts toward CHILDREN. It's one thing for adults to attack other adults (and certainly no less hurtful), but to do this to a child? To do this to someone who is still in their formative years? What kind of fucked up adult helps make a child feel like an outcast? Im just SEETHING over this. |
You've got to wonder who stormed up this brainchild of an idea.
"Ummmm, yeah....we really don't approve of her and her lifestyle, so we're going to erase her from the yearbook. That way, no one will remember the lesbian girl with the good grades. Yeah, yeah...and since she's erased, no one will find out. Yeah, yeah...and since no one will find out, we'll get away with it scot free. Yeah! Do it! Do it!" I used to be upset with how my father deals with my identity, but now I realize...considering he grew up in MS and that mentality....of course, so did I, but I digress....he's a pretty decent guy. He disapproves, but he keeps it to himself. My dad is my very own DADT. |
yep...trudat Gemme..I got issues with my father too {not so much the MS thing}
and no offense to mississippi residents but.. i think i understand now why my mother refuses to step foot in that State [in her case it's racial issue] |

Yeah they aren't "discussing this incident" at the moment.. At least that is what I got today... Everyday they will be getting a call from yours truly... I hope the secretary had plenty of gum to chew cause she is gonna be one busy lady if people call... |
Dear Gay..............
I just called the school district: ME: I just read that there was a senior whose picture was deleted from the HS yearbook because she's a lesbian. Is this true? HER: Ma'am I don't know. ME: You don't KNOW? Seriously? HER: No ma'am, I don't know. I don't have children in school, but I can connect you to someone who may know. ME: Thank you! <on hold for about 30 seconds> HER #2: Copiah Country Schools? ME: I just read that there was a senior whose picture was deleted from the HS yearbook because she's a lesbian. Is this true? HER #2: Ma'am, I'm not gonna make any comment about that. You'll have to call Ms. Sturgis. (NOTE: I did not mention her name before.) ME: Seriously? You can't answer that question for me? I'm not a reporter. I just wanted to verify that what I had read was accurate. HER #2: You'll have to talk to Ms. Sturgis. Good bye. <click> ME: :| <making signs> |
i honestly think legally pursuing this is the better way ...
calling with intent to Protest might not help much.. they can say you're harrassing... mind u, protesting is an eye-opener for many, but...it's as effective as those people who called anonymously to medgar evans, Malcolm x, and a few suffragists {no, i'm not equating since i know most calls are not anonymous or insulting, im saying it's as effective..which means, i doubt it'll be beneficial to the cause.} |
oh, also...
maybe ellen can discuss this on her show -efg- |
Quote:
Um no one is harassing anyone.. I asked a question, I have that right no? I mean if I have kids in school (mind you in another state) I have the right to know that my school district is being abusive with their power.. Yes? No? till then I am calling:bicycle: |
I am just wayyy beyond pissed off now. |
Quote:
Rather Suave, nice photo... As for the second part...Nahhhh, unless her Life is threatened, stay...make a difference, do what she's doing now {with her mothers aid} |
Yes, you would have a right to know, Snow.
But, if they do ask which School your kid is in, and you tell them.. Things change from there. I'm aware you're not harassing, but, whatever number you're intent on calling every day for answers..They might say it. Especially if every day they give you the same answers they just gave diva... just saying. |

First, I didn't type it, but I did ID myself, including my name and the fact that I was in Austin, TX to the first HER. My tone was very cordial. And I wasn't harrassing in any way, shape or form. If she found it harrassing, that's her problem. Maybe a few more calls of concern will open her eyes. Or not. Her choice. **** I went to the Copiah County Courier ~ the local newspaper. There are no articles in their most recent edition concerning this. But there WAS a listing of churches. And in Hazlehurst (the county seat, I believe), a town of 4387 population, there are 16 Baptist churches alone......and at least 2 dozen other churches.... I should have asked for Ms. Sturgis' number....do You think they would have given it to me? <smirk> Light a fire. And hold their feet to it, I say. |

who is queer I would hope had this happened to her in highschool, that each of you would call not because it's me, not because I asked, I would hope you all called because this is a QUEER issue... Our kids are going to these schools who obviously are using their power against our youth.. Our future... |
i just called
After asking for them to verify if the deletion of her senior picture, I was told they will not be commenting on this issue...and hung up on while I was asking when they were planning on addressing the issue. I called back because I wanted an answer to my question...the lady said... "It is all water under the bridge" and she hung up on me again. :( |

I agree. It's a form of silencing her and others in our community. Perhaps it's a misguided effort to "help" her see the "error" of her ways or maybe it's just plain bullying or both but it's not going to work. I wonder when folks are going to actually realize that there are human beings involved and it's not just whether their beliefs are right or wrong but something that will affect her and our youth for the rest of their lives. |
This shit...
just pisses me off....
People can be so damned closed minded. I feel bad for this kid.. Shes entitled to her pic in that yearbook regardless of what she decided to wear or not wear! |
I just called and they hung up on me! I could barely get a word out of my mouth, and boom. |
I just called back. I love having the repeat dial thingy on my phone. :drummer: Well, I got the same conversation that Diva had. Word for word. :deepthoughts: |
We have the Tea Party.....
Could we start a Martini Party? A new kind of vocal majority....... I'm not sure where that came from.......sorry for the derail..... |
Quote:
Something like "Queers for a Better Planet - The QBP" :happyjump: Or a "Cosmo Party" ?! Or a "QUEERtini Party"?! |

I love it! Can there be tiaras involved? QBP Crowns..... <sigh> In other news, here is the Mission Statement for the Copiah County School District: Mission Statement The Copiah County School District has as its mission the providing of learning opportunities that will enable students to become productive and well-adjusted citizens in an ever-changing society. And here is their address: Copiah County School District 254 West Gallatin Street Hazlehurst, MS 39083 ATTN: Ricky Clopton, Superintendent Just in case You wanted to put it in writing..... <smile>:gimmehug: |
We should start our own Political Action Committee :|
Seriously. "QueerPAC". edited to add: just found this one http://www.victoryfund.org/about_us/history |
Fuck you Mississhitty!
It's so saddening that there are some parts of the western world that are still openly homophobic. If this happened in England or one of the northern states, this would be considered a hate crime. People have to learn to CHANGE with the times. Seriously. This is like black people up until the 60s- while they're widely accepted in the north, they meet with a mixed to negative reaction in the south. |
When I read this I was as angry as others here but then I thought about Ceara and her fight and how sometimes we can feel alone in these things. Now I realize that being in Canada there is little I can do (outside of write or call as others have done) so I decided to offer my support to Ceara directly.
With a little internet search I found Cearas' facebook page where thousands of people are posting their support for her. I sent a wee message to her with our link to this thread so that she can know how many people support her. Here is the link to her page if you would like to send her a message too :D http://www.facebook.com/pages/Ceara-...2354..1&v=wall |

It should be called The M.E.D.U.S.A. Group: Mixing Energy & Diversity while Undertaking Serious Adversity..... Jus' sayin'....... |
