Poker - Fans & Players

Any other poker fans and/or players out there?

I started playing in February of this year. I'm a big fan of no-limit hold 'em tournaments. I've received some professional training on tournament strategies, so I'm much more comfortable there.

I'm sure I'll feel better about cash games if I can get to a camp, but for now it's too much of a gamble for me; and I'm just not willing to risk it anymore.

I've done pretty well in tournaments in the short time I've been playing and have more big ones lined up..........one this Saturday, as a matter of fact.

Anyone else?

Linus 11-12-2009 10:17 PM

I enjoy watching it or playing with friends (I prefer the camaraderie of friendly poker even if a few $$ are at stake). Interestingly, I'll be in Vegas in Feb so I may get to enjoy a few games of 21 and some of the penny slots and good stogies. :)

You are far better at it than me, from what I've seen you write about.

Do you know the dates of your trip?

If it works out, we can head down there for a weekend getaway.......maybe get a few others together, as well.

Linus 11-12-2009 11:46 PM

Right now Feb 1-6th but no students are registered yet for the class. I expect that to change. :)

Ebon 06-08-2010 08:49 PM

I play Hold Em but haven't played for money yet. I've been practicing on Pokerstars.com. It's free to sign up and the people that play on there are usually pretty good so it's cool to learn a bit. Wondering if there is a game going at the reunion.

Linus 06-08-2010 08:52 PM

I was talking about that with Medusa (I think). I think that perhaps we could do some simple poker games with small antes (5 cent, 10 cent and 25 cent). I'd love to introduce some to a variation that my friends made (Gould's Gold) that's an interesting pot builder. :)

Please let me know I am in if it happens.

I have always been interested in poker, but am afraid that I am not very good at it it seems, that or it is just a lack of knowledge on how to play the game properly.

Ebon 06-09-2010 12:54 AM

Maybe we can get a game together sometime on yahoo. I think they have poker on there.

Oh we could always do some practise rounds for no bets or penny bets. :)

Is it limited to Texas Hold 'em poker?

Folks; That's a great idea for fund raising for BFP.

I've been playing here and there online, and occasionally I win a hand, but I dont feel like I know how im winning, or why. I feel like there is a lot more strategy to it, then just trying to get a certain hand. That or perhaps im reading too much into things.

Hey Logicaly...

There is indeed more strategy to it!

It's certainly too much to go into here. Reading about it is challenging, in my opinion, because they try and cover everything before you even have the basics down.

What game are you playing?

QueenofSmirks 06-10-2010 07:05 PM

I'll be playing in the Grand Series at the Golden Nugget in Vegas on Saturday! yipppeee!

It looks like it. I'll look around for other places to play online. Maybe pogo has some poker games on there.

POGO has a ton of poker games, including different "stakes" levels of Texas Hold'Em. Enjoy! :)

Good poker strategy is mostly about betting strategy/bankroll management. Sign up with one of the major poker sites...they usually give you a free bankroll of 'play money', as well as having a wide variety of games available.

FullTilt and PokerStars are the perennial big guys, while Cake Poker is an attractive option for newer players.

Also, the 2+2 forums are probably the biggest poker community online: http://forumserver.twoplustwo.com/

Go get 'em, Steph!

Logicaly 06-10-2010 08:59 PM

I am signed up on FullTiltPoker, what I have been playing if I am not mistaking is Texas Hold'em.

Medusa 06-10-2010 09:01 PM

I LOVE me some poker and have gotten lucky a few times :)

I dont have a strategy and I suck at bluffing but the thrill of the game is enough to keep me coming back. I wont mention (oh yes I will!) the time I went to a biggo party in SoCal and there was a giant table of Butches all playing poker and I busted up in there and took ALL of their monies. :shocking:

Thanks!! :) Unfortunately I don't have any success stories to tell for myself, but my honey took 18th place (out of 304 players) at the Golden Nugget event we played in, and then 3rd place in a small daily tourny at Imperial Palace... so that was awesome!

I'm playing in the ladies event at the Borgata Summer Open in Atlantic City this Saturday. Hope my cards/luck are better there! :)

Linus 06-16-2010 08:02 AM

Congrats to your honey! That's awesome.

Good luck on Saturday!

QueenofSmirks 06-24-2010 05:04 PM

Thanks! Unfortunately, I only played about 3 hours. Besides having a table bully to my left, I had horrible, awful, crappy cards - and the very few times I had a good starting hand, someone had a better one. Oh well... that's poker, folks! :cigar2:

I'm going to try to redeem myself next week in another tournament in the same series.... hoping for better cards! :)

AZ Poker?

It's official - I am transferring to our Phoenix office in September! yippee!!

Anyone who knows me knows that I checked out the casinos in the area before anything else LOL. I am thrilled to have a few to choose from - pretty close by I might add! Don't get me wrong, I love playing poker in Atlantic City, but it's a 2-hour drive in good traffic... yuck.

Have any of you played poker in any of the AZ casinos???

Congrats! And welcome to this side of the country!! I've never played in AZ casinos; hopefully, you'll be able to find some good poker games.

I'm stepping up my tournament play and have plans to hit some of the bigger tournaments in the WSOP circuit events. We plan on hitting Harvey's Lake Tahoe, Harrah's Tunica, and Harrah's Rincon (San Diego).

http://www.wsop.com/schedule/wsopcircuit.asp

I'm hoping to get a couple of cashes so I can play in THE big ones!

That is AWESOME!

I have checked out the Harrah's schedules also. I'm sure I'll be making my way to Rincon at some point. It's about a 5-hour drive, but I'll likely hop a plan instead. Have to get settled here in AZ first. I did play at Harrah's AK-Chin on Saturday - nothing to speak of. VERY small, and a lot of grumpy, anti-social players.

I am going to play next Saturday at Casino Arizona, they have a ladies tournament, so I hope that's a better experience :)

I'm already looking forward to making a trip to Vegas by year-end! :)

Good luck/cards Thinker! Let me know how it goes :)

We'll be playing a little in Vegas the first weekend in November......mostly on Saturday.

In case you're interested...

I'll definitely put it on the calendar as a possibility! After driving for 4 days to get here (to Phoenix), a 5 hour trip to Vegas would be like nothing! LOL

5-hour road trips are perfect! You know what I just found out??? The final table starts that weekend. !!!

I didn't even know it when we planned the trip. It starts that Saturday and goes for 4 days. ...ought to be plenty of poker action everywhere that weekend!

On a separate note... We have learned that when we leave out all the bs gambling we tend to do, we have been in the black with poker. We're about to start a couple of months of tournaments here in Reno. My fingers are crossed for some big paydays!!!

Yeah, those other games (or as some of my poker degen buddies like to call them "the dark side") can really screw up your bankroll!

I started 2010 with a bang... cashed 4 tournaments in a row... then went on a downhill slide from hell for a couple of months. Stopped playing for a couple of months to get my head back on straight, cashed in a WSOP satellite series in May, then everything with my relocation started and I've only played maybe 3 times since then! :: gasp:: So I am THRILLED to be in a state that has poker (and near where I live! yay!) and to be so close to Vegas and Los Angeles... I just can't wait to get back into it!

I really am going to try to make that trip first week in November; let's touch base offline about where you''all are staying, playing, etc. I won't be able to go for 4 days, but maybe 2.

Thinker 10-17-2010 09:21 PM

I spent a little time at a tournament table with pro Mike Matusow. I was not the least bit impressed with how he behaved or with his play. He was drunk, knocked his full stack of chips across the table, and called someone a "f*cking idiot" (in a "joking way", of course).

Disgusting.

On a happier note, my wife and I took first and second in a tournament!! First time we managed that one!

Wow! Congrats!!!!!!

I haven't been able to cash in any tourny's I've played in lately. Won a $50 bounty in a tourny last week, bubbled in 11th place in another tourny (I did get a free entry into another tourny, so at least that's something), and my partner and I finished 15th today in the Jack and Jill tournament, out of 105 couples - but they only paid 10 spots. UGH.

RE: Mike Matusow.... sadly, I liked him better when he was on drugs; however, that said, I never really respected him as a person or a poker player. Too bad you didn't have someone better at your table. Maybe next time! :)

QueenofSmirks 10-28-2010 07:54 AM

I haven't played in a couple of weeks :( I'm driving to Los Angeles this week to visit my Aunt though, so I am going to play at the Bicycle Casino at some point during my visit *grin*

Then next weekend is the local ladies tournament (it's every other month).

Hopefully next time I post I'll have good news! :)

Vegas - Memorial Weekend!

Hi All! A few of us are making our way to Vegas May 28 - 31! It would be awesome to meet a few BFPers there! Let me know if you can make it... we can discuss details :)

QueenofSmirks 02-28-2011 07:42 AM

I finally cracked the code to winning in Arizona! Actually, I don't have a real strategy except to slow down my game and adjust, adjust, adjust! But, FINALLY, I cashed in 2 tournaments - 1 yesterday (we agreed to a 2-tier chop) and last weekend we chopped 10 places.

The craziest hand yesterday - I pushed all in with pocket 7's. I flopped quad 7's, and the guy who called me rivered a full house, but it was no good, I doubled up!

I'm realllly looking forward to Vegas in May!

Anyone else have any good stories???

Thinker 02-28-2011 08:27 AM

Hey Steph...

Good for you for being patient and working to figure out what it takes to cash there!!

We've slowed down quite a bit the past few months. Things get busy on the weekends....or just really stressed......and we don't have it in us to sit for that long.

I miss Vegas so much! I will see what I can do to get us there in May.

QueenofSmirks 03-31-2011 08:01 AM

I really hope you make it! Would be wonderful to see you both again :)

QueenofSmirks 05-01-2011 10:49 AM
