The Amateur Hello Kitty Thread?

I had no idea that that little pink kitty stuff had such a following. Of course, I've seen it. But I thought it was for children.

Don't get me wrong--hey! It's very nice. Very cute. Very, um, pretty, yes.

I like cats.

Now, I'm thinking that since moving to Maine, I've lost track of more pop culture than I realize. Just a month ago, in another state, I found a very cool little wristwatch in a hospital gift shop and I was so pleased with it. When I showed to my teen cousins, they were like, "Duh (kids still literallly say 'duh'?), it's an Air Sport." Or whatever. I was surprised to find out that it comes in, oh, 60-odd(?) colors? Mine is black.

Please confess similar cluelessness about pop culture. Or... clue us in. Oh, hey, I had another one: Hula Hoops. Who knew? They're... weighted... and adult people do it in... groups.

The_Lady_Snow 06-10-2011 07:11 PM

Hmph

Um Hello Kitty is an Icon....

girl_dee 06-10-2011 07:17 PM

Yes... hmphhhhh

The other thread is *pro* as in *for*, not pro as in *professional* (opposite of amateur) since so many are anti- HK.

The_Lady_Snow 06-10-2011 07:21 PM

I find her to be an adorable Femme kitty hence my love for her, plus she is sassy, smart, loves her friends and dresses cute regardless if it's a bow or a cute fancy dress:)

She's been around since 1974 and BLOWS Barbie away as far as appeal for me!

MrSunshine 06-10-2011 07:23 PM

Can I get a WTF :/

So I gather the cat is off-limits....

Note to self: Don't be funny about the cat. Don't even be thinkin' 'bout bein' funny 'bout the cat.

Am I still ahead of the curve on the watch?

I already drink my morning coffee from this... http://www.infobarrel.com/media/image/36702.jpg

...and sleep in a nightshirt with a disheveled Tink that says "Who were you expecting? Sleeping Beauty?"

...what else could it be?

scootebaby 06-10-2011 09:55 PM

I just came from checking out the "other" HK thread...

i think an intervention may be needed!

have you all seen the things made to look like the cat? or has the cat on it?

altho the boxer brief thingies didnt look too bad.

got Jo a Tinkerbell motion thing to put in her car...she put it on dash--it melted in the hot Florida sun!

that is all!

tapu 06-11-2011 12:38 PM

Jo--

I'll get it together here soon with a pic, but it's a.... What is it.... It's, like, a painting, but the paint is, um, sort of printed on, but it's not, it's that Tink is maybe printed on and then painted on a little bit on top with, like, some kind of light paint that you can sort of see through. Kind of.

Yeah, we're going to need a pic.

It looks to be from the 40s, or 50s. Or 70s...? It's framed in a... frame thing.

I worked at a big women's bar, <cough>the Flame<cough>, in college and the manager there at the time was my roommate. She gave it to me. This thing has PROV-E-NANCE!!

I am not addicted. I could quit HK anytime I want to.

cinderella 06-11-2011 02:49 PM

I don't subscribe passionately, but...

I do like 'Hello Kitty'. It reminds me of a great love I had once. My lover's 11-month-old daughter loved 'Hello Kitty', so I bought her everyting I could put my hands on with the 'Hello Kitty' logo, from toothbrush to whatever...

Hello Kitty has a special place in my heart because of that, and anyway, she's just so darned right cute!! :)

tapu 06-11-2011 03:04 PM

Thread Clarification, ahem.

Alas, I have never been hip or cool or anything remotely equated with same...even when I was young enough that it would have mattered.

Did you think you were going to mention HK and that

Nobody was going to say anything about HK?

That merely reveals how little you know, grasshopper.

who knew Gumby was a freak! :|

I won the gorgeous 3D Swarovski Hello Kitty in the raffle. I've decided to sell it. I love her. She's truly adorable, BUT, I'll never wear her. I know...the horror!

So rather than leave this adorable pendant in a box all the time, I'm going to put her on the block...well Craigslist.

I'm happy to ship if you will help with shipping (particularly if you are outside of the U.S.)

Here's the link. PM me with any questions. I'll post this in the Pro thread as well.

I drink my tea from Winnie the Pooh and Mariee (from the Aristocats) mugs, lol!

I'm a fan of Hello Kitty! I have several Maneki Neko (Lucky Cats) around teh house from when I lived in Japan - it's truly dangerous, as they have nearly EVERYTHING in Hello Kitty, lol!

OK Tapu, so pop culture.

I was unaware of the sock monkey love fest. Slipped right past me.

and

Know nothing of the watches you posted about. No clue.

The word or expression PoPo slipped past me until I watched "Medea" a few nights ago.

There are kids around, so I hope I am not tooootally out of the pop culture realm...though with my lack of excitement abt Hello Kitty...I may well be.
